23. Icarus's death wish
"Don't play with matches Suga, you will get burned."
He recalled Nanami's ironic voice that was a warning whenever his thoughts or actions were getting out of track.
Matches? He internally scoffed with his own thoughts.
She is the fucking sun. Nothing intimidates her. She will burn me alive to crisp... And she will stand there watching me burn. And the worse part is that I will actually like the pain she will give me.
He sat there in the utterly dark apartment, watching across the window of the opposite building.
Rei was back from the tattoo shop, getting undressed to have a shower.
His heart accelerated, as he knew time was very limited and precious. He had to move fast and make sure she will not notice; otherwise, he will most probably end up dead.
Or worse, the others will find her first.
He had to let her get in the shower first so that the water echo will cover any movement noise.
Thankfully she likes to listen to loud music when in the shower, so more points in his favor.
RM texted him that they are only minutes away, so he was obligated to wait.
"Fuck." He murmured, gritting his teeth when he saw a black car with tinted windows, slowly parking a few meters from the building's entrance.
Someone from the others was coming.
He opened the window and jumped to the fire escape, then to the fire escape of the opposite building, parkouring his way up to Rain's apartment.
He opened the window, biting his lips hard, afraid that a sound might escape.
The carpet was absorbing the sound of his boots as he moved towards the half-open bathroom door.
There were steams coming through the opening, and he slowly pushed the half-open door, trying to see if she was facing his direction.
"The fucking sun."
He mouthed the words inaudibly and bit hard his inner cheek as his eyes were magnetized to her bare, gleaming from the water that fell like rain on her back, her dark hair that continued with rivers on her body, which peaked through the clouds of steam that formed around her.
Tear You Apart by She Wants Revenge was loudly playing from her phone, and somehow he felt like the lyrics were matching the situation. She was softly singing the lyrics along, lost in her thoughts.
In a few seconds, he will be here.
He realized, and pulled his gun out from his black jeans, as he slowly approached her, then when the distance was enough, he did a small threw, to drift it backward and hold it from the caliber part, and raised his arm to lower it the lower back of her head with strength.
Until her body started falling towards the floor, his heart had stopped beating, and he had stopped breathing, thinking that maybe he hit her too hard, or worse, not hard enough to make her fall unconscious.
He jumped in the shower to grab her from falling and pulled her out, his clothes and boots soaked wet from the running water.
Trying to focus on the seconds left, he counted backward for the arrival of the others.
60 seconds.
He pulled a towel with fast movements to wrap around her, then carried her to her bedroom, which he instantly locked and broke the key inside the lock to prevent anyone from opening it from the other side.
Then he opened her closet while starting to panic and throw clothes out of it without an actual plan.
No one told him it was going to be this hard.
20 seconds.
Trying to calm down, he pulled some black isothermal clothes, thinking that outside was snowing and forced himself to dress her as fast as his brain will allow him.
He heard footsteps as he tried to put some boots on her and grabbed a black bag to throw inside the last clothes that were in the closet.
He zipped it,, and now the footsteps stopped out of the door.
Zero seconds.
The man on the other side tried to turn the doorknob, but the lock stopped him.
Suga grabbed Rain, and pulled her on his shoulder to make her upper half body fall behind his back, and held her tight from her thighs towards his chest. He tried to contain a smirk remembering the tattoos she has there, each on every thigh.
Not the right time, he thought, as he grabbed the bag with the clothes on the other hand, and rushed towards the window.
Don't die cause you will never see her with or without underwear ever again.
He thought to himself.
Then froze.
"Fuck! Underwear!"
He turned and dropped her and the bag on the bed and violently opened the wooden closet, pulling the first drawer to its end.
"Open up Suga!"
Words were coming behind the door, in an ironic singing way, from a hateful voice he knew too well.
"Your wet footsteps of desperation on the carpet betrayed you."
Even though he couldn't see him, he knew the man behind the door was vigorously smirking.
He grabbed a fist of underwear from the drawer, accidentally grabbing and dropping a small bottle of pills in their hidden, making it crash and spread the content throughout the floor.
Then just stuffed the few underwear he caught into a pocket of the black bag while the door crashed open.
He knew who it was.
What was different from the last time he saw him was that the upper part of a tattoo he recognized was half showing through the man's shirt's collar.
He laughed. Hard.
How ironic? Suga thought.
"You won't be laughing in a minute little brother."
Sakai smirked and raised his right arm, which he was holding his gun with, in Suga's face direction, instantly pulling the trigger.
Suga's body slammed on the wooden floor in front of the bed; his eyes closed shut.
He wasn't breathing.
Then Sakai walked towards the bed and stood above the lifeless body of Suga. He leaned over Rain's face and removed a strain of her wet, ebony hair that was falling into her face.
"Nothing is ever gonna hurt you, baby," He said and brushed a knuckle along her cheekbone.
"Right!"
He looked down between his legs were Suga's previously lifeless looking body was, to see him smirking in the most arrogant way possible, with his gun pointing towards Sakai's body.
"Cause she's mine now."
The bullet that penetrated Sakai's leg made him fall down, and screech in pain, curving his body to embrace the ripped from pain leg.
"You seriously believe everything so easily."
Suga smirked as he stood up over him, giving him a final kick on the leg, on the spot the bullet was, to make sure that he won't be able to chase him.
Sakai painfully looked up to see Suga giving him a devilish grin while gently grabbing Rain and the bag, and run out of the door, to continue his way through the slippery from the snow cold dark alleys of Stockholm, until safety was guaranteed.
"Is that so, little brother?"
He clenched his jaw from the agonizing pain that was beating in his leg.
"For how long?..."
Mission accomplished.
Suga fulfilled his promise.
With a high price, though, that he will have to pay every day from now on.
"You are too fucking late! I had to go in by myself!"
He shouted on the phone, while instantly regretting it, thinking that she might wake up.
How long would she stay unconscious with just a hit?
He chose to wait for the others to come to get them in the dead-end of a dark narrow alley.
Looking at her angelic face that was hiding a devil for a character, resting on his lap, he tried to imagine how she will react when she wakes.
Smiling, he placed a bet with himself that she will eat them all alive.
He brushed his knuckles softly under her nose and over her slightly parted lips to make sure she was breathing. He knew that, in reality, she was fine. She was too hardcore actually to be injured from just a hit. He just stood lucky.
For how long, though?
You play with matches Suga, you get burned.
This voice echoing in his head every time he had a sinister thought.
"Fuck it. I'm burned anyway."
He said before leaning down to softly brush his warm lips against hers.
~~~~~~~
Back to the present.
"You are not planning to tell me, am I right?"
They had stopped at the edge of a smaller road on a mountain inside a huge park. It was probably illegal to ride a motorbike inside a park, but these are the perks of living an illegal life. They don't care. And if someone tries to catch them, they just hop on their fast vehicle, and they never see them again.
Not that anyone was around anyway. And if anyone crossed paths with them, they would most probably turn around, pretending they never saw them. Cause when you are around gangsters, you feel a weird fear for your life, from the way they look back at you.
"Not really," Suga replied, making a tight lip smile after, and sinking his hands into his pockets, while leaning back on the banister. Rain, next to him, was leaning towards it, on her elbows, looking at the city lights, down of the mountain.
She heard a sigh coming from his side before he spoke again.
"Don't make me. I hate that."
Her eyes narrowed from surprise as she turned to look at him before speaking with an arrogant tone.
"I'm not sure how these things work... But aren't you supposed to do whatever your Oyabun orders you, no questions asked?" She raised her eyebrows.
"Too bad then, that you are not my Oyabun." He gave her his best smirk, trying to make her angry. He knew that it infuriated her. He had noticed long ago.
"Yes, I am. Get used to it."
She said as she took a small carton paper box out of her pocket and picked a match out of it to light her cigarette. He turned away his stare, back to the mountain.
"Almost for three weeks now." She continued after blowing away the smoke that a current of air grasped and made it change its direction.
"Whatever... If you are not going to talk to me, why are we out then?" She said with her firmly indifferent expression, masking that she was planning her words to guide the conversation towards making him tell her. And the result was slow but effective.
"Because I wanted to go out."
He spoke like stating the obvious.
"And you have to go wherever I go because you obviously, cannot be left alone."
He turned to look at her with a judgemental face, pushing his tongue through his cheek, when finishing the sentence.
She knew well that he was referring to V.
"You are wrong." Rain stated with confidence but kept the tone low. "Nothing happened with V."
"Wow, one managed to get away." He looked at her with full-on irony imprinted on his eyes.
"No! Nothing has ever happened with Jimin either!" Her eyebrows raised suddenly to follow her voice.
"Wow!"
He said again with ironic amusement.
"That's only two out of seven!"
He faced her, mouthing clearly every word that came out.
Brainfreeze.
Rain slowly rose from her elbows to stand closer to him, and after a long-lasting blink, she locked her eyes with his, while a smirk formed in the corners of her mouth, getting bigger and bigger as the distance was getting smaller.
She stopped a centimeter in front of his face to whisper every word clearly enough to make his heart feel like a hammer hit it.
"Either you are really bad at math, or I have a reeeally bad memory."
And then she turned away, to lean back on the banister after the satisfaction of a victory embraced her.
He had admitted it. He included himself in the count. Since nothing has happened between them, his words must mean that he had a crush on her.
"We are leaving." He said, picking up the helmets and throwing one of them at Rain, which she instantly caught with a grin on her face.
"Can I drive at least?" She said while wearing the helmet.
"No."
~~~~~~~
Thankfully her old friend the balcony, was there when she needed it.
"I will smile at the stars forever."
She grinned while talking out loud to herself with satisfaction, looking at the sparkling dots all over the night veil.
"Why?" V closed the door behind him and walked towards her, eating a sandwich.
"Because I won." She continued grinning. "V, what can an Oyabun do if an order is not followed?"
She turned to look at him narrowing her big eyes to give his answer her full interest.
But instead, he choked with the last bite he took from his sandwich and swallowed hard after coughing multiple times, punching his chest.
"Why? What did I do?" His worried deep voice barely came out from his closed throat.
"Nothing. I was just asking." She turned back to an apathetic phase.
"Seriously, you can't just say stuff like that! It's a vital matter!" He tried to shout, but his throat was still closed.
"I'm asking because I want to know. No one is telling me shit. What should I do? Google it?" She said with irony, but then reached for her phone to actually do it, finding her sudden idea amusing.
"Wikipedia says that I should cut the end of the little finger of the left hand." She said as she pulled the small knife out of her pocket that she still kept from this morning.
"You are crazy. I'm out." V turned to go back inside, but she called him back.
"Calm down. I was just messing with you." She grinned before taking a serious face. "I hope I will not regret this..." She sighed and looked back on the sky, momentarily struggling with the decision of telling V or not.
"Suga has a message from my mother, and he won't tell me what it is, no matter what."
V chuckled.
He wanted to say something, but his lips remained sealed. Just kept looking at her with an enigmatic smile as he sat with poise beside her on the couch.
"Speak," She said impatiently.
"I can't." He grinned at her, oddly enjoying it. "I can't even mention it or imply it to you, or anyone else..." His grin was taking over all of his face.
"Fuck off." She said, smirking, moving her eyes towards the stars again.
He wanted to speak about Suga. Was it that obvious?
"Anyway, he will tell you. He can't disobey an order. You said your mother gave him a message, so sooner rather than later, he will speak. He can't defy your order and your mother's as well."
"I guess you are right." Rain sighed, wondering how soon is now.
~~~~~~~
Untangling between the sheets, Rain stretched her arms over her head, for her fully arched body to embrace the sunlight hitting it through the stripped blinds. She reached for her phone, only to throw it on the bed apathetically a second after because she saw no messages.
Then dragged herself to the stereo, which she turned on with the first smirk of the day, to the song she always takes a shower with.
The weird thing is that she can remember the last lyric she was singing before everything went black.
Lie still and close your eyes, girl.
The song she used to get under Suga's skin by making all the loft windows tremble from the bass and abrupt his sleep.
The song that was playing on her phone when he was completing his mission. And she remembers it.
"Who pissed her off this time?"
Rm slammed his palms on the kitchen table, making the other six look at him with an angry, self-defensive glare of denial.
They were having breakfast when the song interrupted their morning arrangements for the day. They all looked at each other, implicating that they don't know a thing, but unintentionally, V kept his stare for a second at Suga. And he noticed, making him wonder what had Rain told V. He saw them talking outside yesterday night.
"Good morning."
J-hope smiled at the presence of Rain coming through the corridor towards them. But they had all stopped smiling when she came close.
She was typically wearing an oversized black T-shirt, like a short dress, and moved towards the coffee machine with quick inaudible steps because she was barefoot on the cold white tiles.
"Shhh... Don't talk to her until she drinks coffee." V grinned to J-hope sarcastically, making Rain throw a death stare at him, only to make him avert his eyes towards the table.
She stretched her arms upwards to reach for a mug, making the lower end of her infamous thigh tattoos to appear.
Jungkook narrowed his eyes towards the two words with curiosity, trying to figure out what it says, letting his stare linger for a moment, even though she continued her morning ritual and was now drinking the first sip.
Suga's eyes caught Junkgooks stare, and along with the opportunity for a debate, his devilish grin appeared,
"Do you have a... death wish, Jungkook?"
Suga smirked at him with pure sadism, while Rain choked on her beloved coffee hard, coughing for a long time, before managing to breathe.
The sound of her choking made him worry for a second but immediately came back to his apathetic yet playful state.
Jungkook was looking confused once at Suga, once at Rain, unable to understand Suga's imply, and the rest of the gang also mimicked him puzzled.
Rain closed her eyes and took a sip from her coffee, which she actually managed to swallow, and once she got a hold of herself, she licked her lips and opened her eyes to glare at Suga's with her signature confident smirk.
"Do you know why it's there, Suga?" Her smirk was turning into a sinister grin. "Cause if you have stared at it from close enough to actually figure out what it says, you must reeeally have a death wish."
"Then I'm sure Sakai has one..."
He smirked to dumbfound her for once more, but Rain instantly opened the drawer that she was standing next to, pulled a knife, and threw it to him, which he avoided by ducking under the table, forcing the sharp metallic object to stick onto the wall behind him.
Fucking Sakai. The name that demeanors her, the final nail on her coffin, and also the profound answer for Suga, every time he wants to put her in a tight spot. Even though he says it in a spiteful way, and his face hides disgust behind that arrogant smirk.
How was she supposed to know? It was a dark period of her life that she would prefer to die than reveal every irresponsible decision she made, including Sakai.
In fact, it was a period of her life that not dying was a daily achievement.
Or waking up without the constant wonder of what would be different if she never existed. Or what would be different if she stopped existing. Just disappear. Would anyone notice?
It's not a good excuse, but people do all sorts of things to feel alive or find meaning in their existence. And to find this special thing that will spark your heart, you have to try all sorts of things. Especially when you suddenly have to stop going out with friends to avoid drinking or taking drugs because your mentality depends on another drug, which gives you temporary fake happiness. An antidepressant.
"You are so gonna pay for this."
She looked at Suga with eyes that everyone recognized from someone else, and all seven froze. The last time this kind of stare was in this house, someone died. Not one of them, though, but this time no one was sure about what was going to follow.
Suga stood from his stool, ready to defend himself as Rain was right next to him with her firm and fast movements.
"You do have a death wish, don't you?"
She grabbed the front of his shirt, and he tried to hold her arm and pull away, but before even moving it, he was already laying on the floor, face down, with Rain's bare foot stepping on his neck.
They were all looking at them, too stunned to take part or try to stop Rain because that would be disrespectful.
Jin, however, knowing the feeling of getting your ass kicked by her, continued eating his breakfast entertained, like it was popcorn and Suga and Rain were the movie.
"O-Ren Ishii" V covered his mouth and whispered with a grin towards Jimin, who was holding his breath.
Then she pulled him up to his feet with force, pulled the knife from the wall, and grabbed his arm with her free hand, shouting,
"Everyone else, go do whatever the fuck you are supposed to."
While dragging Suga towards her bedroom.
She knew what she had to do.
"Now that no one is watching, will you start acting like a normal person?"
He crossed his arms in front of him the moment the door closed shut. Rain didn't respond; she just went towards her desk and carried the chair to set it right next to her bed.
"Sit, you fucking idiot!"
She pointed with the knife towards the bed. Not a smirk, no emotion, nothing in the corners of her lips. Only pure, fiery anger in her russet eyes.
He did as she said, pushing his cheek with his tongue, thinking that just yesterday, he specifically told her how much he hates orders.
"Take off your shirt."
She continued with the same fire coming through her eyes while she slammed the knife on her desk and opened the second drawer to take out a cardboard box.
Suga's eyes widened, and he couldn't contain his smirk or the urge to talk back.
"Wow, you actually order your way around guys." But of course, behind his twisted smirk was irony, like always.
"I said, take it off."
She spoke with a focus on taking out of the box some small bottles with various colors and some needles. And he did while looking at her with mixed feelings of confusion and amusement.
She moved most of the things on the nightstand and took a cotton pad with disinfectant to rub it with force on Suga's chest.
"What do you want?"
She threw fires from her eyes, and he looked back, still confused and amused without a word leaving his mouth.
"Since this..." She pointed at her nape, "...clearly means nothing to you, you get to have a new one."
She said as she stuck a needle in the back of a pencil after she cut out the rubber. Then took a fine silky thread and unwrapped it until cutting it with the knife.
"That's a punishment?" He scoffed amused, looking at her precise movements, as she wrapped the thread around the needle, leaving only the pointy silver tip stripped.
"Yes, but mostly a reminder." She said with her eyes focusing on the tools that she neatly was laying out on the nightstand.
"A reminder of what am I to you. So every fucking time that you will even think to talk back to me, or ever defy an order, you will have to think of that, and what it means to you."
She said with the most serious tone he had ever heard her speak. "So what do you want?" Her fiery eyes were burning his.
"A sun."
He smirked playfully, making her raise an eyebrow.
"Why do you even want a fucking sun? Do you even know what that means?"
She mocked him, and finally, the ends of her lips were taking an upturn.
"Just do a fucking sun." He sighed as he lay back on the bed, with his arms crossing behind his head, making his abs pop.
"A fucking sun it is, then."
She said ironically as she tied her hair up on a ponytail, to prevent them from falling in the way, then put on some single-use gloves.
You think that Rain finally is taking charge, right?
Wrong. She always has a plan.
Too many mentions of Sakai, and a memory was sparked. That he almost slipped the reason he was there when Rain was doing his tattoo.
Give pain to a man for several hours, and he will talk. Talking is the way people find to forget current or ongoing pain by focusing on something else.
But Suga, instead, was lying there charmed, focusing on the small hits that were carving his existence.
His eyes were wandering from the ceiling to Rain's facial expressions. She was leaning over him close, stretching his skin every now and then, cleaning any blood that would obstruct her from continuing the design. Then she would repeat that and narrow her eyes over her stings, mildly biting her lower lip when trying to focus more.
"So you know what the fucking sun means?" Rain said, trying to start her plan without taking her eyes from her work.
Suga wasn't talking. Just bitting hard his inner cheek while having his own personal battle.
"The traditional Japanese sun means the beginning of a new life." She said with her eyes still focused on Suga's chest, but the upturn at the ends of her lips was getting more prominent as the time was passing.
"Good."
It was the first word that came out of his mouth after a while.
"Do I get not to be ordered around in this one?" He looked at the ceiling with indifference.
"I don't get how you got into this in the first place if you don't like the deal..."
She was doing it again.
Narrowing her big cat-like eyes over him, and bitting her full lip, in that annoying way, reminding him how close he is to the sun.
He didn't know what to answer, but mostly, he didn't want to answer.
She was confusing him.
She is doing it again. She is trying to find out.
"Does it hurt?" She noticed that he was biting himself and clawing the bed sheets with all his strength.
"Yes..." He murmured without releasing his cheeks from his teeth.
And the worse part is that I will actually like the pain she will give me.
"Why are you smiling then?" She stopped poking to raise an eyebrow at him.
"I remembered something." He smirked at her. "You wanna know?" He took a devilish grin.
"Sure." She said in a neutral tone, but Suga noticed her dilated pupils that betrayed her.
"Too bad. I will never tell you."
He said mockingly with a glowing smile.
Rain sighed and leaned above him again; only this time, she was consciously hitting a little harder.
"Too bad, you are not getting the traditional Japanese sun." She answered with a smirk.
"What?" Suga panicked and jumped from the bed to check himself on the bathroom mirror, while Rain's chuckles echoed from her room.
The outline was completed.
It was indeed a sun, either rising or setting, because half of it was visible. Under the sun on the left part, swirling lines indicated the waves of a sea, while slowly on the right shifting, to indicate a cloud.
It was a masterpiece. Even though uncompleted.
Suga leaned towards the mirror, stunned with the artwork that he will bear in front of him for the rest of his life, and raised his fingers to gently stroke the swollen skin.
"Don't touch it!"
Rain grabbed his hand and pulled it away, but held it to lead him back to the room, where he followed without a word, just his lips parted, unable to speak from awe.
He lay back again, exactly as before, but his stare was utterly lost on the ceiling this time.
Because he suddenly felt the need to tell her.
Everything.
But how? He couldn't.
He opened his mouth to speak, but a sigh came out.
The pain was forgotten.
He was so numb, he couldn't feel a thing.
"So, will you tell me what this kind of sun means?" He was smiling on the ceiling with the mental image of his new tattoo.
"It means that you can do whatever the fuck you want, but you will still die from your arrogance." She smirked, and it wasn't in a playful way.
"What the fuck?" He looked at her, frustrated. Seriously this beautiful thing meant something so pessimistic, or she just made it up? "Are you serious?"
"You asked for the fucking sun."
She smirked again. Then blinked and looked at his frozen face for a few seconds, left the tools on the nightstand, removed the single-use latex gloves, and went to the desk to grab her cigarettes.
"Let's take a break." She said as she lit one with a match.
You are fucking kidding me. Suga sighed exasperatedly with closed eyes.
"This fucking sun..." she grinned proudly, "means that if you are overconfident and arrogant, like you are, you will fly too close to the sun and burn, but if you try to avoid it and fly too low, you will drown to the sea."
She spoke as she moved towards the window to open it and exhale the smoke.
"The cloud doesn't mean anything, I just felt like giving an artistic signature. But you can think of it as an unfortunate storm that you might trap yourself into."
She turned and sat back on the chair, leaving an ashtray next to her on the floor.
"-You are fucking kidding me!" He said it loud this time.
"I told you that this tattoo is a warning."
She said apathetically before taking another drag from her cigarette.
"Don't fly too close to the sun Suga, you will get burned."
Her words echoed in his head, in the same exact way Nanami's voice did, reminding him the last time he thought of the undeniably similar sentence.
So he laid back relaxed, inhaled deeply, and looked at her with the sweetest smile, that had not the slightest sign of irony in it, before saying with his deep voice,
"Fuck it. I'm burned anyway."
