15. Kill or be killed.
You know that aggressively annoying feeling when you turn around in your sheets about 10 times per minute? When it feels like you are fighting with your pillow, and even though the bed is the same you sleep every night, it feels hard and uncomfortable like sleeping on rocks?
Then you feel too hot and kick the covers from your bed; you decide to get up to drink some water, you go to the bathroom after, since you got up anyway, then decide to smoke one more cigarette to take the tension away?
Well, that's precisely how Rain's night went. On repeat. Her thoughts were tangling and untangling in her mind until the headache of the century came to claim her.
Then she realized it was dawn already.
It's been hours since the other two left her to go to bed after Suga announcing that he will spend tomorrow with her.
That is today now.
The weird thing is that she wasn't feeling excited. She mostly thought that she would not know how to act or react around this person. What should they talk about? Should they go out? Where? to do what?
It was more comfortable with the others because she didn't care how to act in front of them. Why did she care now?
Also, there was the matter about that guy, who Suga called Sakai, but he had introduced himself to her as Simon.
Was it true what they said? Was he planning all this time to kidnap her first? Before they even knew about her existence? Did her mother tell him about her or how to find her? That is the only possibility.
Why did he say, "Give my congratulations to Suga?"
Are the two of them some kind of rivals?
And then it hit her.
Sakai will tell her. If RM and Suga won't talk, she will find Sakai and ask him. After all, she missed clearing a detail to RM.
She was telling the truth about what happened with him. Only it happened after she did his tattoo.
"Well, it seems like sleep is not gonna happen,"
She murmured to herself, frustrated as she got up to make herself some coffee.
As she opened the door, Suga was standing there, looking like he was ready to knock or open the door, holding a huge black leather travel bag, like the ones robbers use to put the millions they stole from a bank.
"Do you live outside my door?" She attacked him verbally, clearly annoyed, like it was his fault she didn't get to sleep.
After all, she is the kind of person that no one should talk to before having at least one coffee.
"Here." He responded, annoyed as he threw the bag into her room without entering it.
She passed around him, towards the kitchen, not bothering to share a glimpse or a word.
Thank god I got rid of him.
She thought as the coffee droplets were gathering into the mug.
Who am I kidding?
She thought with wide-open eyes. She took a quick sip from her mug like it was an antidote to the poison growing inside her.
Why do I care?"
Her thoughts were interrupted by footsteps coming closer.
It was him. He was coming into the kitchen.
Why does my heart beat so fast?
, as he entered.
"Wake me up if it's something important, "he said and left her there, wondering if she was glad that he left or annoyed.
She took the coffee to the balcony to have a cigarette. It was a good time for her since she was alone to watch the sunrise and reflect on her thoughts a little bit. It's funny, though; she was so tired that she totally forgot about the bag that Suga brought her.
Not so tired, though to not notice a presence in the kitchen.
"Hey V." She startled him.
"Shit!" he cursed as he spilled some hot coffee on his shirt. "Well, at least if you are going to wake up that early, make some breakfast." He murmured.
"Waking up requires sleeping." She answered him, and it took him a minute to process what she meant. "How is Jungkook?"
"Wait. You know? How?" V looked at her, confused, and scratched his head.
"I know everything." She said in a calm tone. "So if you want to talk to me, you can." She took a sip from her almost empty mug and moved towards the counter for a refill.
"Well, he is ...ok, I guess. Nothing serious. The usual stuff." He said like Jungkook wasn't in a gunfight, but a doctor's appointment instead. "Jimin took care of him," he continued. "But it looks like he will stay out of the field for a while..." He yawned and took a seat at the table. Rain sat next to him.
"So, how was last night?" He rested his head on his fist and looked at Rain with interest.
"Fun" she gave him a morning smirk -at least at first. "That place was nice."
"That place?" he mocked her. "The most exclusive, Vip club in South Korea, only for the rich and famous, that everyone wants to get in but can't, was just... nice?" He lowered his eyebrows. "Pray tell, Rain, did RM tell you that place is yours?"
She choked with her beloved coffee.
"What?" her eyes were wider than she thought they could open.
"Uhmm yeah. And not only that. A few other places too." Rains mouth was open in shock.
"A few other clubs?" While her brain was playing tricks on her, she managed to ask, making her imagining herself behind the bar, making cocktails, and drinking shots with the customers.
"Yes, a few other clubs, some bars in the upper east area, one casino, hotels, and several game rooms and karaoke." He said, looking up, trying to recall the places from memory.
Rain was looking at him like he had grown not only a second but a third head as well. Just staring and trying to understand what the charming, smiling blonde guy in front of her is saying.
"You are rich." He stated the obvious. "And because of that, we are too," then smiled, showing his perfect teeth.
"Let's go," she stood up from her seat to make her way to her room.
"Where?" He grabbed her hand to stop her cause she obviously had a devious shift on her mind.
"To see them!" she shouted excitedly. "I want to see all the places."
"Oh my god, sit down. He sighed and closed his eyes. "First of all, most of them are closed at this time. Secondly, we cant go out now. We have to check on Jungkook. And Suga will be mad if anything wakes him up. He didn't sleep last night."
Rain noticed a sudden heartbeat increase at the mention of a particular name. But hid that, of course.
"Why?" she played with her hair uninterested.
"I thought you knew..." V moved his head back, surprised.
Did she?
Well, the last thing she remembered was him saying that he will stay with her today. Which hasn't happened yet... Then she couldn't sleep... Then he was at her door.
"Right, the bag!" she said to herself and fast-paced towards her room. She was too concerned about playing cool and ignoring him actually to ask what was in it.
She opened it quickly and turned it upside down over her bed to empty it.
"Seriously, this guy..."
She smiled while looking at the contents of the bag on the bed.
It was almost all of her clothes. Well, not the heavy winter ones, but most of the rest of them. All her favorite t-shirts, high wasted jeans, skirts, jumpers, crop tops, and most importantly, underwear. All of them. Every bra and thong she owned was there. Even one with a K-pop group printed on the front -she never wore that one, one of her friends gave it to her as a joke.
She took one black laced thong on her hands and looked at it. Trying to remember the last time she saw it like it could spark some kind of premonition of the past from when she was unconscious.
She had left it on her bed, to wear it when she would have gotten out from the shower. How didn't she notice that someone was there? How couldn't she notice him? When now is so easy for her to feel his presence without even looking.
But most importantly, why did she keep thinking about it?
"Rain?" V looked at her from the door with a "what the fuck are you doing" look. Then she smirked in the realization of what she was holding.
"Just unpacking. Wanna help?" she teased V, thinking that now she needs to find a new way to torture everyone. Especially Suga.
Did he have this planned all along? He obviously didn't go back and pack the rest of her stuff, so or he had it here all the time, either he had someone to send it.
"Thanks, but no thanks. I'll go out for a bit, to run some, ehm, errands. Do you need anything?" He avoided looking at what she was holding and swallowed.
"Yes," she spoke with excitement like a devious image had come to her mind. Then took a piece of paper and a pen to write down a few things.
"Here." She passed him the paper gladly and continued with categorizing her clothes.
"Huh? what's this?" He looked at the paper confused, then back at Rain, who was giving him a "don't question me" look.
"But, here says two..." he was still looking at the paper, confused furrowing his eyebrows.
"I need exactly everything I wrote." She cut him off and crossed her arms.
"Whatever." He sighed and turned to leave. Before closing his door, he slid his head into the room to say something last. " If you can... please check upon Jungkook... He will wake up soon." And he left.
"Yeah, whatever," she murmured and continued placing her stuff in the drawers, second-guessing herself about why is she doing this cause she hadn't decided on staying. Why then settling herself like it's... home? She was behaving like she was actually living there.
Her mindless realizations were cut when she saw a slightly different color at the bottom of the middle drawer.
Curiosity took her over, and she knocked on it, to hear a sound that revealed a small void under it. She used a small knife -that was in the pocket of a jacket in the bag Suga brought, probably not noticing it when he packed her staff- to crack open the wooden bottom from the corners.
When she finally pulled it over, the result was slightly disappointing but still mysterious.
A key.
Not a diary, or photos or some dirt revealing nature documents, just a small silver key. She took hold of the small object to observe it carefully. It looked relatively new, and a small word was engraved on one side.
"玲. "
Rain knew what that was. She remembered seeing this before. She knew Japanese enough to read, understand, and communicate a little since she was a natural-born linguist. For her, learning a new language was easy and fun, without even trying.
But her eyes had met that word somewhere unexpected before.
On her file. It was her name. Rei.
What does it open, though? Should she ask if the guys knew?
Well, she was thinking all this time to ask about her mother.
How was she? What did she look like? How did she die?
But the barrier to feeling towards her, that she made a long time ago was stopping her.
Pretending not to care was the answer to everything.
So she left that key exactly where she found it and decided to take her mind away from that by checking up on Jungkook.
She lingered a little bit outside of his door to hear if he was asleep but knocked and opened the door anyway.
And he was asleep.
Laying there, half covered and shirtless, hugging the pillow with his face buried in it, deep in dreamland, probably from the heavy painkillers.
What drew her curiosity was the bloody seven waves tattoo on the nape of his neck. It was the first time she could see it from close and observe it.
It looked like a traditional Japanese waves tattoo but with a slightly modern twist, and of course, the intense red color that made it look that they were waves of blood.
The other thing that stood out on Jungkooks body was the bandage wrapped around his upper abdominal area, with a bloodstain showing through it, on his left rib.
How far exactly were these guys gonna go, trying to keep her there?
On his nightstand next to his bed were his gun and a glass with some water that had turned dark red and a bullet in it.
She sighed and took a bandage, and some disinfectant left on the table and sat next to him on the bed.
The movement woke him up, and before he turned to see who it was, he reached up and grabbed his gun instantly, while taking a painful face from the sudden stretch of his body.
His eyes froze in surprise when he turned to see Rain, sitting on his bed, and his body was frozen as well, while he was still pointing his gun at her unamused face.
"Sit up," she said and rolled her eyes without even paying attention to his gun.
He lowered it, embarrassed, when he realized what he did, and moved back to the headboard, away from Rain.
"I'm sorry," he spoke with a raspy sleepy voice, patting his messy hair and bitting his inner cheek as he lowered his eyebrows like he was disappointed at himself.
"I didn't know it was you." He pinned his eyes on the floor.
"I'll change your bandages, so help me out here and sit straight."
She looked him right into the eyes with a serious gaze, which made him slightly blush and look away again, embarrassed.
"It's ok; you don't have to," he answered thoughtfully as well, trying to avoid her stare.
"Jimin will do it... or I'll do it my self..." he refused, slightly moving back further like he was trying to hide something.
"Don't be stupid. It's gonna get infected." She crossed her arms in front of her, taking a scolding stance. "So, get your ass over here."
"Seriously, it's fine..." he gave her a fake smile.
That was it.
She closed her eyes and massaged her temples with her fingers in annoyance.
She opened her eyes as she lowered her hands to place them firmly beside her on each side of the bed and locked her russet eyes with his.
"It's an order."
She outspoke firmly and made him freeze again, only to look down a moment after and slowly scootch towards her until he was sitting right beside her.
He didn't talk while removing the old bandage, neither when she lowered her head close to the wound to examine it.
"It's gonna make a mean scar,"
She slightly curved the corners of her lips upwards while applying some disinfectant.
Jungkook looked like he was going to hiss in pain, but instead, he bit his lips to fight it.
He also tried to ignore the fact that a long shiver lingered where her hands touched his skin. Like his skin was longing for more.
"Or a mean tattoo, if you want."
She finished her sentence with a smile and unfolded the new bandage to wrap it around.
He furrowed his brows in curiosity of what she meant, and she answered in response to his expression.
"I can do it for you. Well, when it heals."
She smiled again, revealing two small dimples under her cheeks.
Then she stood up and walked towards the door.
Jungkook was still sitting there, puzzled by what she said.
"Well, aren't you gonna get dressed? Let's go do something, I'm bored." She moved forward.
"Oh, and Jungkook?" she turned to give him the evilest smirk of all,
"better hide your gun."
She said, smiling sadistically while looking at the bulge that was clearly showing through his black boxers.
Then left.
"Fuck." He murmured while slamming his hand on his forehead in despair.
"She killed me too..."
He smiled to himself while biting his lip before slowly getting up to dress.
"Shit..." he cursed again, thinking that if someone else is around, they will notice that he is acting weird.
How was he supposed to know better and don't let her affect him with her mysterious ways?
Her presence is almost ethereal, and her responses achieve the level of making a person feel like she was made for them.
"She is just bored," he responded to himself to reassure that the tricks she plays in his mind are only that. In his mind.
And he left for the living room.
Rain was sitting on the kitchen table, typing on what seemed to be J-hopes laptop. Her fingers flying over the keyboard, making the keys click as she was looking at the screen focused.
"Isn't that J-hopes laptop?" He asked, intrigued while sitting on the chair next to her.
"Yes." She replied, still focused on the screen, as the fast clicking continued. "I found it on the couch."
"Wasn't it password protected?" He furrowed his brows confused.
Rain scoffed, amused by his question, without stopping what she was doing.
"It was." She continued typing, and her face was back to emotionless.
"But Rain..." Jungkook's eyes were fixed on the laptop. "... the keyboard is in Korean."
She scoffed again with a smirk, to show that it didn't make it harder for her either way, as her long fingers resumed clicking the keyboard.
"First of all, I don't need to look at the keys to know what each one is. I know a keyboard." She answered ironically. "And second, I also know the Korean alphabet."
Jungkook didn't know how to respond to that, so he just looked at the screen to see what she was doing. But he couldn't understand that either.
"Should I be scared of what you might be doing?" Trying to hide how fiercely attractive and badass, he found her right now. In his defense, Jungkook still belonged to the twitch generation, so gamer girls were like a wet dream for him.
"Nah. I just turned off the camera in my room. It was fun watching RM beating the shit out of someone at the basement, though." She smiled at herself while the rapid typing continued.
"I also did a small research on the other gang." She furrowed her brows, looking at the screen while unconsciously biting her lip.
"Why? All you had to do is ask." Jungkook replied, troubled by the idea that she was interested in finding out things about the others. Was she considering to go with them?
"Why? Being in their database is more fun." She smiled proudly to herself.
"Rain, no. What are you trying to do?" Jungkook stood up and looked at her.
"I'll smash this laptop to pieces right now if you don't tell me!"
He yelled and pulled his phone out of his pocket, probably to call someone.
Rain stopped and turned to look at him.
She stood and moved fast towards him to instantly grab his phone and put it in her pants.
Way to utilize underwear, now that she had some.
Then she sat at the laptop again, and before continuing whatever she was doing, she looked at Jungkook with a worried face.
"Please, just trust me." She looked back at him again and waited for his approval.
"I wanted to find out stuff to help you." She said, and Jungkook sighed, almost relieved.
But she wasn't.
The truth was, she just said it cause she was afraid that Suga would hear Jungkook and wake up. And then maybe, unfortunately, fulfill his promise, and spend the rest of the day with her.
It is so weird that the thing she was longing for the most, she was now trying to avoid.
She couldn't face him, not until she found out what Sakai meant at the club. And she couldn't wait anymore.
So she found Sakai's laptop in their network database and left him a message.
To meet.
She stood and closed the laptop, then grabbed Jungkooks hand to drag him to the balcony.
He protested but didn't really resist.
"You said all I have to do is ask..." She looked at him while lighting a cigarette and leaning on the balcony wall. "So, I will ask."
"What was your relationship with my mother?" She scanned him thoroughly from top to bottom, making him even more uncomfortable.
He sighed and took a seat on the couch on the coffee table because his wound hurt a little when he stood. He still felt weak.
"She was my Oyabun, of course. What do you mean?" He looked elsewhere to avoid her gaze.
He knew well what she meant, but the story was too painful.
"I mean how she became your Oyabun, as you say—the whole story. I know you and the others were not in this gang from your families. You were not born into this. So how you became this."
She sat next to him to listen carefully. He sighed and leaned back in the chair before hesitantly starting to tell his story.
"Not too many years ago, I was still in middle school. Well, my story is kinda short... compared to Jin's or J-Hope's, but here it goes."
He took a long breath to prepare himself mentally.
It was the first time for him to talk about it.
"To be honest, my life sucked. In every aspect. My family was horrible to me, pressuring me to study day and night. They wanted me to be the best student in the school... I wasn't."
Rain rested her face on her palm and narrowed her eyes from interest to his story.
"Their strictness led to no friends, girlfriends, or anything like that. My whole day would be waking up, going to school, and studying. Nothing more." He smirked ironically with bitterness to himself.
"When I got a B on a subject or disobeyed them in any matter, they would not let me eat, or give me money to eat at school. And that was only the best-case scenario." He was still smirking ironically, but beneath that, the pain was hidden. Deep, mental distress, the kind of that could change your life.
"What was the worst-case scenario then?" Rain raised her eyebrows and felt something weird inside her, like she was angry with how his parents treated him.
"Ending up in the hospital from the beating..." He said as he was tapping his fingers on his knee nervously.
"Or not ending up at all, just laying on the floor in my room unconscious for a day or two..."
They looked at each other silently for a moment.
Junkook sighed and continued.
"One day..."
He paused to take a long breath, inhaling with closed eyes, gathering all the courage to continue.
"I was returning home from school, and I was passing through a park. I wanted to stall my return, so I decided to take a stroll. I saw a beautiful woman with two younger men. All were dressed in black, talking under a big blossomed tree. I had many things on my mind, so I ignored them. My right hand was broken at the time, so I was wearing a plaster cast. I continued walking through the park, away from them, where I saw two younger kids from my school, eating some snacks... And I don't know why, probably because I was starving for days, I bullied them into giving me their food. When they refused, I beat them and took it anyway. I saw behind me the two guys from before that were ready to come and stop me, but the woman told them one word that I couldn't hear from the distance, and they stopped. Then I started running towards the park's end, where a bridge with a big river under it was. I ate the stuff I stole from the kids while crying silently for the way my parents made me act. This wasn't me. They managed through their actions to make me lose myself. When I finished, I stood at the end and crossed over the railing of the bridge, standing there with my eyes closed, tears still falling from my eyes."
Jungkooks eyes were also closed shut as he told the story, his face probably mimicking the way it was back then. Even a small tear was escaping from the corner of his eye.
"And then I heard the voice that changed my life."
His face was lit all of a sudden, even a smile escaping his lips.
"She said to me,
"You won't die from this height anyway."
And she raised one eyebrow in an arrogant way that kinda... pissed me off at the moment. She was that woman that was under that tree with the other two guys. And she was even more beautiful in a dominant, empowering way from close. Then she pulled me over the ledge like I was lighter than air and sat me on the ground. She scanned my whole body with an expression that I still cannot decode and asked me in a way that was more like an order than a question."
"Who did this to you?"
"But I was too stunned to answer. I just kept looking at her. Then she leaned closer towards me and looked me in the eyes. She put her hand inside her jacket, and when I saw that she pulled out a gun, I almost pissed my pants."
Junkook chuckled with mixed feelings about this bittersweet memory.
"She pointed the gun to me for a second, and then I screamed with all the air that was in my lungs. "I want to live. I want to live free." And then her intriguing expression changed to a smile of satisfaction. Then she lowered the gun and... placed it in my left hand."
"Then kill or be killed."
She was still smirking with satisfaction as she turned and left me there...."
He took a long sigh before proceeding to the next part of the story, which was the most important.
"Rain, before I tell you this, you have to understand... She was right. I wouldn't be here right now. And I don't regret any of my choices. It was still my choice. I could have thrown the gun in the river if I wanted to. I could have killed myself and end it there. But I knew what I had to do."
He locked his dark, mysteriously beautiful eyes with hers, unblinking.
"So I went home and killed my parents."
Jungkook was looking at the floor and biting his lip nervously, waiting for Rain's response, hoping that her attitude won't change negatively towards him, now that she knew.
But Rain kept staring at him with a bittersweet smile on her face.
She didn't judge.
"And then?" She asked for him to continue.
"In case you didn't get that, the woman I am talking about was your mother." He smirked playfully to lighten the mood.
"Yes, I got that." She rolled her eyes ironically. "I'm asking what happened after. How you ended up here."
"Well, after the... shootings, I got out of the house feeling lost in every aspect, and she was there, leaning on an expensive black car with crossed arms, like she was waiting for me, to finish my...job. I approached her, and she immediately ordered me to get in the car, as I noticed the two other guys from before, who were RM and J-Hope by the way, getting in my old house... probably to clean the mess... And then she brought me here."
He said with a grin that lit his beautiful features.
"The gun I have till this day is still that one..."
He finished the story and smiled like longing for a long lost memory of her.
