Chapter One
Fallenkit prodded her brother, Hollowkit with a red-and-white dappled paw. He groaned, his dark green eyes still clouded with sleep. She stifled a laugh at his amusing expression, her blue eyes glinting in the dawn sunlight.
"Few more minutes..." Hollowkit grumbled, turning over so his face sank into their mother, Vixentail's soft belly. Fallenkit narrowed her eyes playfully, and she grabbed Hollowkit's scruff in her teeth, dragging him across the nursery floor. She stopped about two feet away from the nest, panting. Her fluffy tail swished gently. Hollowkit looked up. "Fine, Fallenkit. You win." He growled gently, pushing up on to all four paws. Fallenkit smiled triumphantly.
"We're gonna be apprentices in two sunrises! I can hardly wait!" She mewed, her high-pitched voice bouncing across the StoneForest camp. A ginger and white tabby queen gazed at her own kits with her one eye. "Memorysight, is something wrong?" She asked innocently, though she knew that the queen was fussing about her three kits, Lostkit, Twistedkit, and Brokenkit. Each had been born with a slight deficiency. Lostkit was blind, Twistedkit's front right paw was backwards, and Brokenkit only had three legs. Fallenkit could already guess their warrior names; Lostsight, Twistedfoot, and Brokenleg. She thought they were cruel names, and had suggested Dawnkit, Briarkit, and Hollykit instead, but was turned down. Memorysight simply shook her head, her bald patch shocking Fallenkit every time she saw it. Though every cat in the alliance knew about Memorysight, once Marigoldpaw, and the dog attack, it was still a sore spot among the Clans. Lost in thought, Fallenkit wasn't alert when Hollowkit tackled her to the ground. She squirmed onto her back and pummeled his belly with her hindpaws.
"Got you!" He yowled, his tabby pelt fluffing up until he resembled a grey pinecone. Fallenkit stifled laughter, her reddish-brown, black, and white patched coat always smooth and sleek. Her mother Vixentail said she looked like the sky during fall. There was a rustling, and Boulderstar, Stone-leader and the kits' father poked his head in. His dark grey almost jet black pelt rippled and his shoulders twitched when he got caught in the brambled of the nursery entrance.
"Hello, Hollowkit, Fallenkit." Boomed their father. He towered over the two kits like a skyscraper. As his head tilted downwards, the two kits got a glimpse of his face. It was overcast, and his eyes were stormy. They knew when he was like this it was best to leave him alone, and not do anything stupid.
Memorysight's head immediately shot up. When she saw it was just Boulderstar, she relaxed. Ever since the dog attack, she was very reserved, but also incredibly jumpy. She tended to jerk her body parts, and force them to move rather than flow with the grace that she used to possess.
Hollowkit nipped at Fallenkit's ear and they resumed their little game. Boulderstar saw all of this and called out "Both of you stop this immediately. You both will be apprentices in two sunrises time. You need to act like apprentices not empty headed kits." Fallenkit's sunny personality immediately disappeared behind a wall she used to guard it with; as it usually did when her father spoke to her. Her fur which was the gleaming red and orange it was now seemed to have lost its sheen. Her face fell.
Boulderstar made his way to a now-waking Vixentail, and she quickly covered herself with her tail. Usually tomcats were not allowed in the nursery as frequent as Boulderstar, but beeing clan leader did have its perks. His gaze, which were previously stormy gave way, and were replaced by this- this- this emotion that Fallenkit could only describe as love. Boulderstar's eyes looked all clear and he seemed to flirt with Vixentail; his mate. There was now, a serene look on his face as he went in to nibble on her ear as a greeting. But when he saw Vixentail shudder with pain it was replaced again by the stormy look in his eyes that he came in with. "What's wrong, Vixen?" he asked.
"Nothing. How was work?" She asked, evading the subject of the ongoing pain in her tail. He doesn't have to worry about me when the cats from the Dark Forest are attacking our kin by night...... Great StarClan this pain...! She writhed as another wave of pain overtook her body.
Boulderstar's face fell, and he tried again to cheer her up. "How does a walk along the river sound, Vixen? I'll come by the nursery at sunhigh to take you if you want?" Yes! I've wanted to go on one of our walks for a while, but what about the kits? She thought. As if he could read her thoughts, he mewed gently, "I'm sure Memorysight can watch them for a bit."
"Well.... Okay. Thank you so much for this" Vixentail murmured in Boulderstar's ear. After a quick nuzzle Boulderstar left the nursery, and went back to the base of the highrock. Darkfur, Foxstep, and Oakstar looked up from their huddle as he passed the other authorities.
Their conversation slowly ceased, and Darkfur asked "How is Vixentail doing?" There was something not right about the air as Boulderstar replied that she was fine, as were the kits. This should be enough information to make them shut up. I hope they don't remind me of her pain again. He wondered what caused her pain, and soon enough, he started getting a throbbing pain in his head. He padded to the medicine den to see what the medicine cats had for him.
