Chapter 31.2
[UNEDITED]
I had to convince the guards that I was needed at the Central Labs, but they would not let us get the car out.
"Ma'am, there's a riot going out, we cannot let you out!" he took a look at Dylan sitting in the driver's seat, "And who are you?"
"He's with me," I told him "Please, you have to let us through."
"I am sorry, ma'am," the guard was not convinced at all, "I would request you to get the car back into the garage and stay inside the house please. Thank you."
I sat there with a grim face, while Dylan slowly took the car backwards.
"Are you sure you want to go?" he asked again.
"I do," I said, "But they won't let me go, so it seems!"
"Sit tight!" he winked at me.
I watched as he accelerated the car, and drove right over the rubbles. The outer boundary had a big hole near the stairwell, and he made his way there. I clutched the seat with all my might, and he sped towards the hole.
The guards tried to move us away by standing on our path, but when they understood that we would not stop, they jumped away.
We were soon out of the boundary of the house, and were speeding away from the house on the road.
"Thank you," I told Dylan.
"Don't thank me yet," he said, "We have a long way to go!"
The road to our house was empty, but as soon as we hit the town, we saw what that guard had meant when he said 'riot'.
There was fire everywhere. I saw a bunch of regulators taking aim and firing at god knew what. People were being shoved out of the way, and a bunch of dead bodies were lying on the road.
"Oh God!" I covered my mouth with my hands, "What a mess!"
"Why are they doing this?" Dylan asked as he tried to squeeze our car through a bunch of abandoned vehicles.
"Depends on which group attacked us," I told him, "If it's the rebels we have known so far, then they want to live here with us with all equal rights. If it's the other group..." I could not speak anymore, "then they want me."
The last few words made me guiltier than ever. I looked at the bodies on the road. There was a woman there, with a baby lying right next to her. Both of them appeared dead.
So many deaths, because of equal rights or for me? If they were dying because of me, then I needed to know how I fit into all these, and why there was a mass destruction because of me.
Dylan had to take plenty of cuts and sharp turns, and we were almost hit by a running truck with logs. They hit the electric pole on the sidewalk, and rolled over on the road, releasing the logs in the process. I had only seen this scene in movies only, but in reality it was crazy and scary as hell.
After almost killing two people running to and fro, we finally reached the Central Labs. I got out of the car and just as I was about to run, the bullet wound in my legs started to hurt.
You can do this! I ran to the glass doors, but was interrupted by the guard.
"Miss Wilkins!" he said, "Come inside and hide! The world had gone crazy!"
"Where's Uncle Benjamin?" I asked, "Is he inside? I need to talk to him. It's urgent."
"I am afraid he left for Northbridge Avenue about an hour ago!" the man said, "But you can stay here. There is so much danger outside –"
"Thank you!" I turned and ran out of the place.
Dylan was waiting for me in the car, "What happened?"
"He's there, in that building," I locked in the seatbelt.
"Northbridge?" he asked as he turned the engine on.
"Yeah!" I said, feeling dead inside, "He must be getting his weapons out."
"This is not good!" Dylan said, "We should get there as soon as possible."
We tore through the vehicles and riots on the street, keeping our eyes peeled for any attacks or accident that might be caused by us.
We were just about to enter Northbridge Avenue, when someone shot at our car, causing the windshield to break into a million pieces. Then there was another shot, and it hit Dylan's left shoulder.
He yelped in pain, and I saw a spot of crimson stain his shirt.
"Dylan!" I shouted.
The car went off the road and hit a pole on the sidewalk. I was jerked forward, and I hurt my arms pretty badly.
I turned and grabbed Dylan's bleeding shoulder, "What do we do now?" I panicked.
"It's okay!" he said, "I am not going to bleed to death!"
"But you're hurt," I pointed out, "We cannot go on like that!"
"We have to!" Dylan argued, "I need to cut the muscle here to get this thing out, we cannot afford to do it here."
"Can't you melt it?" I asked helplessly.
"I have used up most of my strength," he gritted his teeth, "I would like to save up now. We might need it once in that house."
"Dylan..." I begged. His wound was still bleeding, but it had subsided somewhat.
"Come on," he turned the engine on once again. The hit was not so bad, and the engine roared to life right after two turns.
We drove into the perimeters of the house that had been our target. The area was as eerie as ever. It was hard to believe that no one had evaded this place while the other parts of the city was going crazy fighting.
We parked the car some good fifty feet away from the house, and then got out of the car. Dylan was suffering, but he did not let it come to his face.
"Come on," he picked up the bag and shoved me as I tried to complain, "We have to go."
