Chapter 13.2
[UNEDITED]
"Hey!" I smiled and then looked around, "What are you doing here?"
He shrugged, "One of my daily routines."
I patted the bench and then scooted, making way for him. I was happy all of a sudden.
"You come here?" I asked him. He nodded.
"I have always dreamt of going to school, meeting new kids, making new friends... someone I could hang out with. But given my conditions, I could never do so. So, I just come here and look at all these people. It makes me happy."
I looked away.
We sat there quietly, and then Dylan elbowed me.
"What are you doing here?" he asked.
"I am bored," I told him, "People keep whispering behind me, it's really annoying."
"I should leave," Dylan stood up, "The golden rule of visiting this school is, never stall at one place."
"Hey, I had to talk to you about something," I stood up with him, "It's important."
"Meet me at the southern beach maybe?" he said, "After school? I will be there."
"What's there?" I asked him.
"You never asked what we did for living," he smiled as he pressed a finger on his lips.
I mused, "Yeah, I guess it never came up! So, what do you do?"
He shrugged, "I cut woods and supply them to a company that makes pencils and other wooden stuff. That was I do not have a business or work that needs to be registered, and the government cannot track us."
I stared at his face, "Oh. That's brilliant!"
"It's not much, but we try," Dylan shrugged, "Okay, so, I will see you later then?"
I nodded, and then watched him walk away. I felt wistful, but then you didn't always get what you wanted.
After lunch, I talked to Amaya, and made up a story of how I needed to go see the boy I had mentioned earlier.
"Okay," she smiled, "Stay away from any trouble."
After school was over, when dad came to pick me up, I told him that I wanted to leave with Amaya to their house, and I slipped out of the campus at the right time. I took a cab to the Rank Three colonies, and then got down and started walking.
It was broad daylight, but the weather was not the greatest. Other people were walking on the street with me too. Most of them were just going to places.
When I finally reached the cabin, it was pretty empty. A few homeless people were loitering about in the property, just chilling and talking to each other. They did not even look at me, which was a relief.
"Boo!"
I screamed and turned, my backpack falling off my shoulder and on to the ground. It was Dylan.
"Seriously?" I punched his chest. Laughter shook his body.
"You fight rebels and scared by this," he said in between laughs, "You are something, aren't you."
I stared at him. I could look at him forever.
"Sorry, but seems like the mistake of your life is back again!" I gave him a dry smile.
He pursed his lips, and then I saw disappointment shine in his eyes.
"You know I never meant those words like that!" he exclaimed.
I shrugged.
We were drawing too much attention.
"Come on, let's go from here," I pulled him as I looked around.
Dylan came round, and too, was looking around him.
"You wanna come home?" he asked, "Nicole made turkey today."
"Sure," I said brightly. I wasn't sure if I would enjoy Nicole's cooking, but I was ready to do anything that had to do with Dylan.
The two of us walked through the maze of trees inside the woods, and this time I took careful notes as we took turns. Soon it started to rain, and I was soaked in no time. I was surprised to find Dylan totally dried. For a second I wished I had the power to raise the temperature of my body. I was freezing because of the cold water all over my body.
Finally, my heart thumped as I saw the clearing of the establishment. I heard someone gasp, and the shrill voice of Nicole came to my ears.
"You gotta be kidding me!" she shouted from afar.
I sighed.
"What's the excuse this time?" Nicole asked as she looked from my face to Dylan's.
"I came to eat the turkey," I told her brightly.
Nicole fumed as she looked from my face to Dylan's again. He just shrugged.
"She had something to talk about," he argued.
"So you brought her here? Why? Did the world drown or something?" Nicole wouldn't give it a rest.
"Knock it off!" Dylan shook his head.
Before Nicole even turned, Mel came out of one of the cottages, followed by her husband Sam. She had a mixed expression on her face, and I couldn't really understand if she was happy or annoyed at seeing me.
"Hey there!" she approached us, "What on the earth are you doing here?" she asked, surprised.
"I needed to talk to you all," I said without further preamble.
"Sure!" Mel motioned me towards the cottage she had come from, and Nicole started to protest.
"It's okay!" she assured her, "I got this!"
I felt her give me more death stares as I walked away from her and into the cottage.
Unfortunate for me, Beth was sitting there, and Daniel too; having a deep conversation.
Daniel was utterly shocked as he lay his eyes on me.
"What are you doing here?" he asked, his eyes wide.
"I have been asked that question a hundred times today!" I asked and hugged my body.
Beth suddenly stood up.
"Dylan, take care of the girl first. She looks like she's dying. Get her some spare clothes, let her dry up and then listen to what she has to say," she ordered, and then she slowly glided away from the room.
Dylan smiled, and then steered me towards his room. More memories flooded my mind as I stepped in. I had spent ten crucial days of my life locked up in this room.
"Welcome back," Dylan motioned towards the bed, "But don't worry, I will not lock you up this time!"
"I trust you!" I laughed as I sat down.
"So, how do we get you dry?" he tapped his lower lip.
The words 'I have a few ideas' were just hanging on my lips, and then suddenly I rebuked myself. Was I out of my mind? That would be a horrible thing to say even if I meant it as a joke.
Luckily, Beth had informed Nicole out there, and she appeared with that small shorts and t-shirt that I had worn on my last day here. Dylan left me inside the room and I quickly changed back to those clothes. Nicole took the wet ones away, and promised she would dry them as soon as she could. From the look on her face, I was certain she was going to burn some holes in some very inappropriate places.
"Okay, tell me. Why did you came here?" Dylan asked once we had settled inside his room.
I picked up my backpack which had a bunch of soaked books and a pencil case inside it. I emptied the contents, and Dylan picked up one of the books out of whim.
I saw with awe as the book started to emit smoke, and within a minute, the cover was hard and dry again. But the book looked a little fluffed out because of being wet.
"Wow!" I said.
Dylan shrugged.
"Hey, can you do the same to this?" I held out the piece of paper that had all those information in them. He took it from me, and then gave it a try. The paper was dried out, but I could not unfold it.
"It's ruined, sorry!" he handed me that folded square, "Anything important in this one?"
"Yeah!" I said dimly, "This is what I came here for."
Dylan looked confused, "Care to elaborate?"
"Call everyone," I requested.
