Part Eight: Sirens
Sabrina stepped from the darkness into the dim light of the living room Nathaniel and Olive were arguing in. The faced her with bewildered expressions. Sabrina herself looked grim but unfazed.
"No, she didn't," Sabrina repeated, turning to look Olive in the eyes. "Sophia, although she is suspicious, is 100% innocent."
"How do you know this?" Olive asked skeptically. "You could be working with her, trying to get her in clear while she-" Her voice raised a little with every second she continued to speak.
"Olive, let's not-" Nathaniel reached out, trying to grab her arm, but she was already walking towards Sabrina, barreling out accusations. Sabrina never once flinched or stepped back.
"I am not working with her because both of us are innocent people," Sabrina answered simply. "However, if you would stop incriminating me, I have information you would be better off hearing."
When Olive did not reply with any words, only rage-filled eyes, Sabrina continued on with hesitation. "You see, I saw the murder happen. The reason I wasn't surprised in the slightest when I was told what happened was because when you were trying to go everyone's rooms,
I was sneaking back to my own to avoid suspicion."
Nathaniel stood there with his eyes the size of oranges. "Well then who murdered Amy?"
"It was Cody," Sabrina replied gravely, her blank slate of a face contrasting the horrified expressions of the other two.
"Cody?! But...why?! He knew how dear Amy was to Sophia! He loved Sophia too much!" Nathaniel questioned; his face looked as if his entire world was flipped upside down.
"Easy. Sophia was going to give her inheritance, the whole company that would make Cody and his girlfriend rich beyond their wildest dreams, to Amy. With Amy dead, she would be forced to keep the company," Sabrina explained.
"So Cody did all this for money? But why didn't he do it when there were not so many people in the house?" Olive asked.
"More people means more suspects to divide the attention of the police," Sabrina answered.
"So why didn't Sophia hear the broken vase?" Olive asked. "I'm still not sure..."
"I'm afraid that is a question I don't have an answer to," Sabrina admitted, stilling maintaining her calm demeanor while explaining.
"We need to find Cody, before he pulls anything else!" Olive urged. The other two nodded and they raced up the stairs to find Cody's bedroom door opened. Inside he was reading a book titled "And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie". He quickly looked up to see Olive standing over him menacingly. Nathaniel was right behind her, trying to copy her firm expression and pose but failing miserably. Sabrina was outside the room, listening in on the ordeal. She decided it was unsafe to let Cody see her.
"Cody, we need to talk to you," Olive said gravely. Cody remained calm, putting down his book and offering his bed as a seat for her. Nathaniel followed suit, sitting behind Olive so she was between him and the potential killer.
"What's up?" Cody asked.
"Cody, stop that. I'll get to the point. We have reason to believe you murdered Amy Shores. You were seen killing her in cold blood with a knife." Cody's eyes widened for a nanosecond then returned to their normal size, however they now possessed a mischievous glint. His lips curled into a slight smile.
"Well, I suppose there's no point in hiding anymore now. I assume Sabrina saw me? I figured she would be sneaking around the crime scene," Cody chuckled evilly, paying no attention the terrified pair next to him. "But no matter how many times I confess to my murder, you will never get me in jail. With a good lawyer, I can easily put the blame on any one of you. After all, I am the son in-law of a famous company." He laughed.
"Why is Sophia asleep?! What did you do to her?!" Olive shouted.
"Oh right, you guys don't know. I put a Candy Corn snake in her room, so she won't be waking up until all of you are at the police station being interrogated," Cody explained.
"Wait, a minute, a Candy Corn snake?" Nathaniel asked. "Those can kill people!"
Cody's evil grin faded in an instant to a horrified look. "No, she's not dead," he whispered softly. "She...she can't be. No, no, she's not. She's not!" He turned to Nathaniel with rage filled eyes. "No, she's not!"
Olive nodded to Nathaniel with a worried look and dashed upstairs, Nathaniel, Sabrina, and Cody right on her heels. They ran to Sophia's room and saw Sophia on the ground. Olive rushed to her side and checked her pulse. Olive started to cry silently.
"No, she can't be dead! She can't be!" Cody screamed.
"She's...dead," Olive weeped.
Cody's grin fit for a maniac came back, this time accompanied by tears. He walked towards the balcony overlooking the beautiful sea green ocean in Sophia's room. From the balcony you could see the sun coming up to relieve the darkness of its job to cover the sky. His back faced Sophia's dead body and the others. Sabrina was in the corner of the room, watching events unfold.
Cody turned back to the three one last time and grinned mischievously, then jumped off the balcony into the ocean. Olive, Sabrina, and Nathaniel watched as Cody splashed into the hungry waves and never came up again, and sirens could be heard in the distance as the police drove the mansion not knowing that it was too late.
