Chapter Five

Cindersong's POV

The dim den I worked in was hot and stuffy. I was practically suffocating due to the weird bird that caused Skystorm to fall to her death. With a damp pelt, wide eyes, and panicked breaths, I fumbled through the herbs in a rush. Coldwish was wheezing loudly. Though he was fast asleep thanks to the poppyseeds, he still seemed to be in pain.

It was my fault... I thought as I searched desperately for coltsfoot. If only I had told Marshstar, maybe we would've been prepared.

I stopped what I was doing and I glanced over at Coldwish's twitching body. His silver pelt was greatly damaged from the toxic hot air that had burned his pelt so badly, it singed. He wouldn't have fur in those patches for moons if he survived the night. I had guessed Greypaw wouldn't be able to sleep so I fed him poppyseeds as well as thyme.

I ducked down to look under a ledge and there was the coltsfoot. Sighing in relief, I carefully pulled it out with a sheathed paw and chewed it up. I laid it on an ivy leaf and nudged Coldwish awake quietly with my muzzle.

"Eat this. It'll help your breathing," I whispered kindly, trying not to wake Shadowpaw. His blue eyes were glassy as he groggily licked up the pulp. Coldwish's head hit the nest with a thump and a moan.

Satisfied that he'd breathe better, I cleaned up my mess and settled into my nest beside Shadowpaw. I nuzzled my nose under my fluffy tail and soon I was asleep.

My ears perked up to the sound of a cat in distress. Coldwish? I sat up in fright, my eyes immediately resting on the silver tom. He was in his nest. I couldn't hear him rasping, which I took as a good thing... Until I padded up to him to find he wasn't breathing at all.

I started to take in shallow breaths, my fur spiking up. "No, no!"

But Coldwish didn't wake as I prodded him again and again. I heard some cat puking. With a lump of grief lodged in my throat, I ducked out of the den wearily to see Jaggedpaw laying beside his puke. I rushed over to him. "Did you eat crowfood?" I growled, not expecting an answer.

Birchpaw stumbled out of the dirtplace tunnel, drool dripping from her jaws. She looked up to me with pain glazed in her blue eyes and shook her head.

I noticed there were dark specks of blood in Jaggedpaw's puke. "We drank water and this happened..." The ginger apprentice whimpered softly.

"Wait here!" I ordered, pelting into the medicine den. I tore through the herbs, looking for willow leaves and watermint. The one time I need these herbs and I can't find them! I did find them after panicked heartbeats of searching, and after ripping them from their pile, I dashed back out. Rocks flew over the apprentices limp bodies as I halted.

I checked to see if they were breathing. Jaggedpaw was but to my horror, Birchpaw was completely still. Help Jaggedpaw, don't panic. I thought. I breathed in then breathed out slowly.

I nudged Jaggedpaw softly. His eyes opened, but they weren't the odd dark brown color they used to be. My ears went back in confusion as I realized they were glassy and white. Jaggedpaw groaned and clawed toward me. My gut told me to flee.

"Jaggedpaw? Eat these willow leaves, they'll-" I mewed but he didn't respond with words. I stopped as he reached out with open jaws and clamped his teeth around my ankle. Yelping, I bounced back in shock and fear.

"Jaggedpaw!" I yowled as I tried to free my leg from his grip. "Jaggedpaw, what in SoulClan's name is wrong with you?"

Jaggedpaw didn't reply. "What's going on?" A voice asked from behind me. I turned around to see Shadowpaw padding out of the medicine den. I could feel the blood dripping from the wound. I looked down at my ankle just as Jaggedpaw stood up. He stumbled towards me with spit and blood dripping from his mouth. The only thing I could get from deep within his milky white eyes, was that he was hungry. Hungry for flesh.

Birchpaw woke as well just as I heard more moaning from behind me again. "Coldwish! You look... hungry?" Shadowpaw muttered, cringing away from the silver tom as he slowly staggered toward the apprentice. "Watch out!" I called to him. The dark apprentice bolted away. I realized my voice seemed to call Coldwish toward me.

I felt teeth grab onto my front leg and then another on my flank. I yowled in pain. I whipped around and shoved the apprentices off. "Cindersong!" Shadowpaw whimpered as another cat began to maul on me. I kicked with my back legs and ran toward the river to get rid of the flesh-craving cats.

My wounds stung more than any wound I had ever encountered. I left a blood trail that led the cats straight toward me. Cats started to come out of their dens, Clawkit included. He dashed out and growled at the cats. "Hey! Stop being mean! We're your Clanmates!" Clawkit yowled, his fur spiked up.

"Clawkit, no!" Willowfrost snapped, running over to the kit. Coldwish had already turned around and was in front of Clawkit. Willowfrost blocked Coldwish away from the tiny kit. Coldwish latched onto the elders shoulder. Blood squirted from her wound, spraying all over the ground and onto Clawkit's face.

Clawkit yowled in disgust and backed away, whipping his eyes and spitting out the fluid. Darkshine popped her head out. Birchpaw and Jaggedpaw stumbled toward me fast. They reached for me but as they came at me, I pushed them into the river.

My breathing was shallow and fast, and my head was hot as if I was going to faint. The amount of blood I had lost was immense. "Get rid of Coldwish, Clawkit, Willowfrost, and I..." I ordered. My gut sudden churned and I let out not just prey, but a great amount of blood as well.
