Chapter 5
"I've already told you no one can make me feel the way you do."
Camila had her eyes closed and tried to get some sleep but the restless moving of the bus made it almost impossible. She groaned, changing the position.
They were now on their way from Montana to Hot Springs. Before more than an hour, their plane finally landed in Helena and they changed clouds for a firm ground. Except, Camila thought, these roads were a hell for vehicles. There were so many turns and road bumps which made her go crazy.
"Uggh. How much till we reach that complex?" she asked out loud, although probably the whole bus was asleep.
"We just got on the bus," the voice next to her said. "Why aren't you sleeping?"
Camila faced Kaley.
"Because of the same reason that keeps you up," Camila more asked than said and then she heard a quiet chuckle.
"I bet you're thinking about your little encounter with Amelia," Kaley teased, making her groan in annoyance.
"Seriously, what's with your annoying ass for these past hours?"
Her cousin just smiled again, adjusting a little in her seat.
Camila thought it was for the best if she would try to get some sleep too so she faced the window again, looking out in the darkness surrounding them.
-
"How much till we get there?" Amelia asked Damien who was sitting beside her. They both decided to put the people they would guard to the same bus and they were now sitting in the back row together.
He looked at his wristwatch.
"Probably around two hours."
Amelia rubbed her face. Honestly, she felt too tired she barely got a strength to keep her head up. She knew that tiredness was only a consequence of her not taking a blood for a long time.
She felt Damien's eyes on her.
"Why are you doing this to yourself?" he asked. "You're risking a lot, Amelia. You could faint in the middle of the battle."
She waved her hand.
"I'm okay."
Damien made some strange noise and wanted to say something but Amelia's attention got dragged to something else. She suddenly felt a finger tapping her shoulder and turned around.
She came eye to eye with a small, light-haired boy who looked at her with curiousness and a little bit of fear.
At first, she froze not being completely sure what to do but in the next, she just tilted her head to the side in silent question.
"You are good, right?" the boy asked.
Amelia swallowed and exchanged glances with Damien before looking at the boy again.
"What's your name, sweety?" Damien asked. The little one's eyes moved from Amelia to her cousin.
"I'm Lucas," he said. "My big sister told me all the blue eyes are good. So, you two are good people, right? You're going to take us somewhere where red-eyed people couldn't find us and you're going to keep us safe, right?"
After hearing this, Amelia wanted to hug him. The boy seemed so honest and at the same time scared. She felt sorry for him and his family.
"Why don't you sit here with us?" he asked him, making Amelia gasp in surprise. She gave him this "what the hell are you doing" look. "We have plenty of space and we could talk."
Lucas smiled. He accepted his offer and climbed the seat in between them. After adjusting himself a little better, he looked up at Amelia's eyes again.
"Where are we going?"
She swallowed hard.
"Well, there's this big building complex in the middle of the woods. You could say it's more like a ranch."
Lucas's eyes shined.
"Is it nice there? And do you have any horses?" he asked, now nearly jumping up and down in excitement.
Amelia once again looked at Damien who was observing the boy in curiosity.
"Yeah, there's a lot of green fields and we have this big park where you can walk or exercise or do whatever you want," the other vampire answered instead of Amelia. "And there's horse stall behind the biggest building in the complex."
Lucas opened his mouth.
"Do you have a horse?" he asked directly Amelia.
She wasn't so used to talking to humans. She always stayed far away from them in order to protect them or at least, minimize their contacts with vampires.
"Umm...yeah, I have one," she replied in a strange voice.
Damien seemed to notice her growing anxiety.
"Do you like horse riding?" he asked Lucas, trying to drag his attention away from Amelia.
The boy then started to talk about his horse and she finally let out a breath she was holding. Her hand went through her hair, smoothening it.
"And then, my sister decided to buy me a horse," she heard Lucas finishing the story.
She looked at Damien's face. Her cousin was smiling.
"Well, isn't she nice?" he asked.
Lucas just hummed.
"Who's your sister?" Amelia decided to ask.
He looked at her and then pointed his finger at the top of the head a few rows ahead.
"Everyone knows who's my sister," he said. "She's Camila Reyes. She likes to sing and does that a lot. Sometimes she even has concerts in big buildings. There are always so many people when she's singing. They love her."
She swallowed hard.
This boy was actually Camila Reyes's brother. The same Camila Reyes who tripped on her way down from the plane and almost kissed the floor. The same Camila Reyes who Amelia saved from breaking something.
Damien's head immediately snapped up.
"Is this..." he started but she cut him off.
"Yes, that's the same person."
"So, will I be safe there?" Lucas asked again, probably already forgetting about his sister. "I got attacked by this red-eyed monster. I don't want to meet him again."
Amelia took a deep breath and her brain started to work fast. This boy survived the attack of a red-eyed vampire? How they didn't find out about this? She already thought about talking to Janus immediately after they got to the complex.
"Wait," Damien started. "You got attacked? Who saved you?"
Lucas shrugged his shoulders.
"People from my horse club started to run towards us when they saw," he replied.
Amelia looked at Damien and saw his eyes wide open.
"Holy shit," he squeaked out.
She only hoped Janus was familiar with this information. Because if not, then the red ones had more influence on human race's lives than they thought.
"Don't worry," Amelia started. "None of these red monsters had entered our complex. You'll be completely safe there. I promise."
-
Just as Camila finally fell asleep, suddenly a hand collided with her shoulder.
"Wake up!" she heard somewhat excited Kaley's voice beside her. That once again made her groan. She simply couldn't catch a break.
"Kaley, I swear to God, if you touch me one more time, I'll kill you, do you understand?" she hissed, feeling completely and utterly annoyed with her.
"Camila," Kaley slowly started. "Look at the back rows. But carefully. You don't want them to catch you staring, okay?"
Now Camila was curious. She wondered what Kaley was talking about. She adjusted a little and then carefully turned her head. Her breathing stopped.
There was her brother, sitting in between no one else but Amelia and Damien. They were talking about something she couldn't hear.
"Luke-boy has a game," Kaley commented and then snorted. She was clearly amused by all this.
Camila's head snapped back and she froze in her seat.
Kaley looked at her, startled with her reaction.
"Kaley, go get him," Camila said, her face showing panic.
"What?" her cousin asked.
The singer's elbow suddenly collided with Kaley's ribs and she yelped in pain.
"What the hell?"
"Go get him," Camila repeated. "There's no telling what he's saying to them about me. Go there and bring him back."
Kaley looked at her as if she had lost her mind.
"Oh, relax," she waved her hand, dismissing her. "What the worst that could happen? You know very well that boy adores you. Why would he say something bad about you?"
Camila wanted to bang her head against the window. Out of all days, Kaley decided to choose exactly this one to be difficult.
"I'm not worried about him bad-mouthing me," she explained. "But I am worried about sharing embarrassing stuff about me with them. Just listen to me for once and go there."
She started to push Kaley so much that the other girl nearly fell off her seat.
"Ow," she complained. "Would you stop? If you don't want him to talk to them, why don't you go get him by yourself?"
Up to this moment, Camila was ready to strangle her.
"Kaley, please," she whined. There was no other option. "Just, please, do this one small favor to me and I'm taking all the chores over for the next month."
After a couple of moments, Kaley just sighed.
"Who's the paranoid one now?" she asked loudly, getting up from her seat. Then, she started a clumsy walk to the back rows.
Camila's eyes followed her. She sighed in relief. Kaley would manage to drag Lucas away from Amelia and Damien. The last thing she needed right now is her embarrassing childhood stories flying around this bus. And God knew there was a lot of them. Lucas could mark this trip for her.
"Oh, God, please, don't let him open his big mouth," she asked.
-
Amelia observed a woman who was currently approaching them. She wasn't Camila Reyes but some other girl, who was sitting beside this boy's sister.
"Luke-boy?" the woman finally uttered when she got close enough.
Lucas's head snapped up.
"What are you doing here? You're supposed to be sleeping now."
Amelia's eyes were traveling from Lucas to the woman but then, they stopped at Damien. Her cousin was already looking at her with great interest.
"He came here for a chat," Damien said and spread his lips in a small smile.
She paid her attention to Damien but not for long. Her brown eyes once again found Lucas.
"C'mon, honey, let's go to sleep," she said, offering her hand to the boy but he just got more close to Amelia.
Feeling his warm body against her made her gulp. She definitely wasn't used to this. The sensation was new but good. She had a strong urge to protect this little boy, although she knew the woman wasn't a threat.
"No, I want to stay here with my new friends," Lucas replied.
She just shook her head.
"Cami was very worried when she noticed you weren't there anymore. C'mon."
Until now, it was clear that Lucas didn't have any intention to leave back seats.
"I have an idea," Damien meddled in. "Why don't you sit down with us too and we all can hang out. We have like an hour and a half of driving before we get to the complex and that's plenty of time to get to know each other."
Amelia's eyeballs almost fell out of their place. She once again looked at Damien, but this time her eyes were stern and dark. She honestly felt like she could kill him. The only deal was to not talk to humans more than necessary but he already broke it.
It seemed that the woman had second thoughts about this but in the end, she just shrugged and sat down, right next to Amelia.
The vampire felt like she was in hell.
"Was he annoying you?" she asked, her entire head tilting to the side in curiosity.
Damien smiled again. Apparently, he simply loved to be friendly with everyone.
"No. He told us about being attacked by a red-eyed vampire, being Camila Reyes's brother and that's about it."
She smiled back.
"What's your name?" he asked.
"Kaley," she replied, offering her hand so they could meet properly. "I'm Lucas's and Camila's cousin."
Damien accepted her hand and gave it a brief shake while Amelia only observed them.
"I'm Damien and this is my cousin Amelia. But I'm sure you already know about her. She's your..."
"Guardian," Kaley finished before Damien managed to do it himself. She was now looking directly at Amelia's eyes. "I know. We were informed about it before getting on the plane."
Kaley smiled. Amelia had to admit she had a charming smile. The girl wasn't so bad. Her short, brown curls were hanging freely just a little over her shoulders. Her face had a light makeup but her cute smile was the most impressive thing on her.
"I'm really glad to be able to meet you," she continued. "And thank you for doing this. We really appreciate it."
Amelia's words got stuck in her throat. She simply couldn't talk.
Damien again was the one doing it instead of her.
"I'm sorry about her," he said. "Usually, she can talk. I don't know what's gotten into her today."
Kaley just laughed out loud while Amelia's head snapped back. She gave Damien one more stern look.
"I'm perfectly fine, thank you very much," she replied and then focused her attention back to Kaley. "Nice to meet you too."
Amelia didn't feel like smiling. She thought it was better to keep her straight face but Kaley didn't seem to be bothered by this. Then she felt a sudden weight colliding with her lap. Her eyes looked down and saw a very much asleep Lucas leaning his head on her lap.
She froze. Her hands were standing in place, in the air. She didn't know what to do.
"Do you want me to remove him from you?" Kaley asked, already moving forward so she could take Lucas.
Amelia looked at her and then back at Lucas.
"No...no, it's okay," she replied. "Let him sleep. He's probably exhausted. We're on the road for a long time now."
The other woman smiled at her words.
"I never thought about you having a soft spot for kids," she said, making Damien snort. "Not that it's a bad thing but still. I'd never say the main leader of blue vampires is such a softie."
Amelia heard Damien laughing his ass off on this.
"I really like you, Kaley," he said, between broken breaths. "Can you stay a little longer?"
She could swear Kaley's face got a little red.
"I'm just talking my mind," the woman replied. "Don't take me seriously."
Damien leaned over Amelia's shoulder.
"No, really," he said, now in more normal voice. "I need a partner in making fun of Amelia. You could be very useful to me."
Amelia elbowed him.
"Damien," she hissed in warning, while Kaley just giggled.
-
Camila was in literal pain. Real pain.
She was tossing and turning all over her seat, impatiently waiting for Kaley's return with Lucas. But of course, the other woman was nowhere to be seen.
And then Camila heard a loud laugh, coming from back rows.
She slowly lifted her head so she could look back and yes. Kaley sat there, right beside Amelia. She and Damien were laughing at something while the vampire leader's face was straight and serious.
Camila wanted to scream.
Kaley was already dancing on a thin ice.
She huffed and turned around, stubbornly crossing her arms over her chest.
"You could join them back there," she heard her father say. He sat in the same row as her and until now, Camila was convinced her parents were both asleep. "It sounds like they have a good time."
Once again, she huffed.
"I don't wanna. I just asked Kaley to go get Lucas so he wouldn't annoy Damien and Amelia but of course, she went against my wishes. She always does that."
Oscar's eyes were now fully opened and her father was looking at her.
"She's just trying to get to know them," he reasoned. "We'll have to live with these people. And besides, that girl Amelia saved your ass from breaking a nose so you could at least say thank you to her. Go, join them."
Camila looked back and saw Lucas leaning on Amelia's lap. Her eyes softened and a small smile crept its way on her face.
"I'd rather stay here if you don't mind," she replied. Truth to be told, she felt very anxious just even thinking about talking to the blue vampire. "I'm sure they'll get back here soon. And I'm tired."
Oscar chuckled.
"As you wish, honey. Get some rest then. We'll be there soon."
-
Amelia looked out of the window and finally saw so familiar shape of their complex under the bright stars and dim lights. She let a small smile on her face. It was an understatement that she was happy to be home again.
As she observed the area more carefully, she saw a crowd, waiting for them in front of the main gates. The blue coven was on its feet.
"Guys, we're here," Damien yelled and gained her attention. "You should get ready. My father awaits us."
Suddenly, there was a lot of shifting and moving around but, surprisingly, no one uttered a word. Amelia assumed they were all too deep in thoughts to make a small talk.
After they finally passed the main gates, the bus stopped in front of the crowd.
"Let us get out first and then, you can come too, okay?" Damien said out loud.
Again, no one answered to him, so Amelia and he left the bus. As soon as she was back on the firm gravel ground, her eyes looked for Janus. She saw him breaking through the crowd, towards them.
"Welcome back," he said, giving them both a hug. "How much of them are in your bus?"
Amelia looked back to tinted windows of the vehicle they were traveling in.
"Around sixty," she replied.
Soon, they saw other buses approaching the gates and Janus immediately gave a sign to let them in. When they were all parked and all the other guardians gathered, he asked them to bring humans out.
Amelia and Damien exchanged glances in understanding. Then, she climbed up again.
"You can go out now. Janus is expecting you," she informed them.
In the next couple of minutes, there was a big crowd of human people forming in front of the vampires. Amelia and Damien were right next to Janus, who observed humans. He was smiling softly, in order to make them feel welcome.
"Welcome to the blue coven's complex," Janus finally said out loud, when all the commotion was over. "My name is Janus and I'm the main head of the entire blue coven. I hope the whole process went unbothered. As you already know, this is going to be your home until further notice. The thing I want to say first is I'm sorry," he paused a little. Amelia saw a dark shadow passing his face. "I'm very sorry we couldn't keep this war under control and I know how big influence it has on all of your lives. This is the least we can do for you, after bringing so much danger in your close proximity. No red-eyed vampire has ever stepped a foot inside these gates so I can promise you that you're going to be safe here. Your houses are waiting for you. Inside, we left you some kind of "guide" about everything you need to know in order to function normally inside this complex. I sincerely hope we're going to manage to find a way for successful coexistence. I'm leaving you now with your respective guardians to take you to your houses. Thank you."
Janus stepped aside and all then, all the guardians formed their groups of people and started to lead them to residential settlements. A few days before, Janus and Amelia discussed this and decided that the celebrities should be settled in warrior's part of residential settlements, in order keep them safe.
Amelia and Damien exchanged some papers in between them.
She needed half an hour to take all of her people to their houses. As the crowd behind her became smaller, she recognized Reyes family and Lucas still following her. Then, she remembered that one of her neighbor houses was prepared for humans. Amelia swallowed.
It wasn't such a good idea being so close to Lucas, considering that the boy already approached them. She indeed wanted to reduce her contact with humans to the minimum.
But, as just as she predicted, Reyes family was the last to get their house and the one next to her place was the only one left available.
"So, you're the only ones left," she spoke, leading the way to their place. "You can look ahead and you'll see your house. It's the white one to your left, right next to mine."
"Thank you so much for doing this," the older man, probably a father said.
"We're going to live next to you?" Lucas asked.
Amelia could hear an excitement in his voice. She didn't look behind.
"Yes, you are."
When they fully approached it, Amelia climbed to the porch and stood right next to the small table, placed there.
"This is it," she started. "You can go in and please, don't forget to read whatever Janus left for you in there. It's important to be informed about everything."
The man offered her his hand and Amelia accepted it.
"Umm, miss Reyes, before you enter the house, I need you to sign some papers for me," she once again said, now looking at Camila.
The singer was nervous. Amelia could smell it. She just nodded her head and exchanged glances with her family, before all of them left to go in.
The two of them stayed out alone.
Amelia pulled the papers Damien gave her earlier and put them down on the table, along with a pen.
"If you could sign here," she said, pointing at the line with her finger. "It's just a formality connected to the payment and stuff like that."
Camila just hummed and did as she told her.
After putting her signature down, she gave the pen back to Amelia. Now the vampire had a chance to look at her eyes better than before when she caught her to stop her falling down the plane stairs.
They were light brown and very soft. Camila was staring back in some kind of daze.
"You okay?" Amelia asked.
That seemed to startle her a little and she quickly moved a few feet away.
"Umm, yeah," she replied, coughing a few times. "I'm fine, thanks."
Amelia was still looking at her in hopes Camila would move enough for her to pass by without any psychical contact.
"Well, I'm gonna go now," she informed her, spelling every word slowly. "See you soon and enjoy your stay."
Camila was still just looking at her. As she probably didn't have any intention to say something, Amelia just slipped by her and started to leave.
"Thank you," she heard her say in a low voice and she decided to turn around.
"You're welcome."
The last glimpse of Camila was her smile. After turning away from her, Amelia couldn't help but let out a quiet and soft laugh. The other woman was so confused and lost that she even couldn't utter a word while looking at her eyes. That made her smirk. It was just a confirmation of her influence on other women. Even on human ones.
She was so caught up in her thoughts that she didn't even realize when she had left the area of their house and the first thing she saw was a person running from the direction of her own place towards her.
It was Xenia.
"Baby," she called, almost jumping on her, her arms immediately wrapped around her neck.
Amelia backed a few steps away but managed to catch her.
"Oh, my God, Xenia," she groaned. "You almost made me fall. What's wrong with you?"
The other vampire just hugged her more firmly.
"I've missed you," she replied in a whiny voice. "You were gone for too long. I've already told you on one can make me feel the way you do."
Amelia rolled her eyes in annoyance.
"Oh, for God's sake, I was out for two days," she replied, moving her away from herself. Xenia's palms immediately cupped her cheeks. "Stop being so clingy. It bothers me."
"But baby," Xenia whined once again.
Amelia just rubbed her temple. The other woman then leaned forward and closed the gap between them. Although she was a little caught off guard, she kissed back. No matter how annoying Xenia sometimes was, Amelia hardly could resist her when she was so close.
Their kiss wasn't slow. It was needy, passionate and lustful.
Amelia's eyes ran in the direction of Reyes family's house just to see Camila running in.
She saw them.
