Chapter 2: The King And Queen
Meera often spoke about how overjoyed she'd be to have a wild beast as a pet. She said that in her dreams she was born a Targaryen and would fly dragons as if she was born to it. She also said she dreamt of being a Baratheon princess with a stag that would follow her around like her protector.
But now that i have introduced her to Raven, she seemed indifferent. "Does he bite?" she asked keeping her distance from myself and Raven. "I'm training him, but so far he has not. Do you want him too?" i teased.
"No!" she exclaimed not understanding my joke. Meera was my closest friend since i was one and ten. She found me crying one day after my father had chastised me in-front of his banner men. The scolding was my fault. I tried to push Theon off his horse after he told a farmers boy i wanted to marry him.
She comforted me and told me all of the horrid things her brothers do to irritate her. She made me feel grateful for my own brothers. They wouldn't dare to tease me. My father would curse them for it. And she has stood by my side since.
"I swear to you Meera, he is harmless" i said picking the cub up. He had grown quickly. More quick than my siblings pups. Jory suggested he knew i would need protection so the gods grew him twice and tall, twice and quick.
"My father said he saw your bastard brothers wolf growl at my brothers when they were training. They don't seem harmless" Meera said with her nose scrunched. I wanted to smack those words out of her mouth. "Well, Raven is not Jons wolf. He is kinder. And your father does not know all."
I had decided to call my wolf cub Raven. When i returned home from the Godswood and told Jon all my troubles concerning the raven from Kingslanding, he tried to cheer me up by suggesting that my problem was a great name for the dark wolf. I agreed.
"Wont you atleast try and pet him?" i suggested. Meera slowly laid her hands on Ravens soft fur as she finally let her guard down. "He is soft, isn't he?" she said with glee. We both chuckled as Raven squirmed with excitement from all this attention.
"Sara!" someone called out causing me and Meera to quiet down. We both looked around but saw no one. "Sara!" the child's voice shouted again. It was only then we both looked up and saw my younger brother Brann on the roof of the castle.
It wasn't unusual to find him there. "The king and queen! I see their carriages. They're coming through the gates now!" he exclaimed with excitement. My smile faded as i handed Raven to Meera.
My mother had spent hours on my hair so i looked "presentable" for the king and queen. She also made my wear my finest dress. Not as fine as the queens gowns i presume, but decent for the North. It was originally blue but Sansa has sewn small, red flowers into the material. I would be lying if i said i did not feel like a royal myself. "Well hurry down then and don't let mother see you!" i exclaimed.
Brann just smirked and ran out of sight. I tried to put on a brave face as Meera looked sorrowful. "They can not take you away. If anyone is going to be married, it should be me first" she joked trying to life my spirits. It worked slightly.
"Just take Raven to my rooms and if you see Jaime Lannister, tell your brothers to shove a sword in his back" i teased back. A distasteful joke, but one we both found amusing. I rushed to the yard to find my family all lined up, except for one.
Arya.
I stood beside Robb and Sansa looking around for Jon. He was stood with the Steward men. It would be unbecoming to have a bastard meet the king and queen i guess. Stupid rule. "Where is Arya? Sansa, where is your sister?" my mother questioned sharply. Sansa simply shrugged. She then looked to me. "I don't know" i whispered.
It was hard to miss the sound of horses trotting and the carriages trudging inside the walls. I fixed my dress stood tall as i watched them march in. Suddenly, Arya came sprinting towards us with a helmet covering her eyes.
"Hey, hey" my father called out. "What are you doing with that on?" he asked. Arya looked apologetic as my father chuckled. "Go on."
"Move" Arya snapped shoving Brann out of the way. We all watched as the royals rode into
sight, leading the herd of lions and stags was prince Joffrey and king Robbert.
The prince was slim with hair as gold as the sun. Nothing like his fat, oaf of a father. I cringed slightly at the sigh of him. My father must be mistaken when telling his tales of war. This was the Demon of the Trident? Robb could take him on any day.
Whilst i watched the knights help the king off his horse, i felt Robb nudge my arm. My eyes searched for what he was nodding to as i realised the blonde prince was staring at Sansa, a smirk written across his face. Sansa returned a smile as she blushed.
Perhaps Sansa could marry the prince in my place. I mean, she was more ready for marriage than i ever could be. Then perhaps i would be free from the Lannisters claws and our houses would be joined.
Robbs jaw tightened as i shook my head, laughter escaping my lips. There was another knight i noticed with a peculiar helmet in the shape of a hound. He was tall, much taller than any of my fathers men. He could even be slightly taller than Hodor.
Once the king finally trudged off his horse, we all knelt before him. Not able to stand until he allowed us. Gods, what i would do to have everyone bow before me every time i walk into a room.
King Robert looked down at our family before reaching his hand out to my father. We all rose for him as my father muttered the words "Your grace." Robert looked him up and down.
"You've gotten fat" he said.
My mouth fell open slightly at his boldness. If any other man criticised my lord father like that, his men would have a sword to his throat. But this was the king. My father looked the king up and down as his eyebrows raised.
The silence was interrupted by the kings loud laughter as the two men embraced. "Nine years!" he then exclaimed. "Why haven't i seen you where have you been."
"Guarding the North for you, your grace" my father answered. "Cat!" the king then exclaimed embracing my mother and ruffling Rickons hair. "Your grace" she said nodding to him.
I ignored the kings words for a moment as i watched the Queen step out of her carriage, surrounded by all her ladies in waiting. She wore a fur covering and a soft pink dress. Her hair, as gold as her sons.
"Where's the imp?" Arya asked loudly. Loud enough for the queen to hear. She gave Arya a daggering stare before turning to me. She looked as if she was taken each and everyone of my features in. She didn't seem impressed. I looked at my dress to see if i had gotten dirt on the ends, which i hadn't.
She scoffed quietly before walking towards her ladies. I fidgeted uncomfortably. It was as if her stare has burned right through me like wildfire. "Who have we hear? Rob!" the king exclaimed shaking me out of my worried daze.
Rob shook his hand before he turned to me. "I remember you. You were just a babe when i saw you last. All grown now i see" he said patting my shoulder. I forced a smile, but all i wanted to do is bathe and get his whore ridden touch off of my skin.
"Well, your a pretty one" he said to Sansa. "And your name is?" he questioned to Arya. She chewed on her tongue before answering. "Arya" she muttered. She was much too distracted to be kind. All she has talked about since knowing about their arrival was the famous imp. "Oh!" he said finally reaching Brann. "Show us your muscles."
Brann flexed his arm, with no muscle to appear. But it was kind of the king to pretend. Arya hit my arm as she pointed to a knight on his horse. The man removed his helmet as flowing gold locks came tumbling down. "That's Jaime Lannister. The queen twin brother" she said.
In all honesty, the tales of the man's good looks did not lie. But his looks were not to be deceived. We all knew what he had done to the late king. I've heard the tales of his treachery. Who knows if he would do it a second time?
The queen Cersei made her way towards us, putting her hand out of my father. I watched closely, as did my mother, as he laid a gentle kiss upon her hand. "My queen" both my mother and father said.
"Take me to your crypts. I want to pay my respects" the king interrupted. "We've been riding for a month, my love. Surely the dead can wait" the queen spoke almost sourly. "Ned" the king said, ignoring his wife's words.
My father reluctantly followed the man who seemed in a haste to get to the eery crypts beneath our castle. "Where's the imp?" Arya repeated. I gave her an annoyed look which again, did not do un-noticed by the queen.
"Where is our brother? Go and find the little beast" the cold woman spat to her brother. The blonde knight tutted before heading in the direction of the brothel. "Gods" i whispered to Rob. "The Southerners are already brining the smell of shite to Winterfell"
He chuckled loudly as everyone finally left the yard to prepare for the feast. "Sansa, Sara" my mother called out. "Come. Let us prepare you both for the feast." Arya had already disappeared before my bother could beckon her too.
We both followed my mother idly, not before i turned back and saw that there was one woman left in the courtyard. The golden haired queen Cersei stood between the doorway, staring me down as she did. I gulped slightly at the woman's stare.
What could i have done to make her so furious with me? Once she realised i was afraid, she followed her ladies to her chambers. "Are you alright, Sara?" my mother asked. I nodded silently.
I ignored the queen and never spoke a word about her eery stares. But i couldn't help but feel uneasy. After all, she was a lion and i only a wolf. What could i do against her?
