SIX; FAMILY REUNION
───IF THE MALFOYS truly believed that Angelina Johnson was going to walk away and just keep quiet about the injustice taking place, they had another thing coming. She was not going to allow the Malfoys to manipulate Saros during one of his most vulnerable moments. Her father explained that Saros didn't recognise anyone or recall really anything, so it meant that everyone had to handle the situation with care. However, even if Saros didn't know the struggles and horrible things his family had put him through, he had requested them and St Mungo's had to oblige. There was nothing on the hospital's file that told them that Saros was a disowned son and their last record showed that he was under the Malfoy family.
With no evidence besides Angelina's word, Lucius, Narcissa, and Draco were allowed in and that pained Angelina more than anything. Knowing all the grief they had purposely caused Saros during the previous school year, all because they didn't support his own developed beliefs. They had made him cry on numerous times, they had hurt him psychologically and emotionally, and yet, they were being allowed to walk back into his life as if none of it mattered. She knew that her father's hands were tied as he had to stick with the protocol of the hospital, but that didn't mean she couldn't take matters into her own hands.
As soon as she was practically forced home with Katie and Alicia in her company, Angelina summoned the family owl and decided to write down the quickest letter possible with as much information she needed to make sense. People didn't know that Saros was alive, only his immediate family and of course, Angelina and her friends because they had been the ones to discover him. But all of that was going to come to an end as she wasn't going to wait any longer. She was basically going to alert those that needed to be alerted, those that could hopefully intervene as she tied the letter off and sent the owl into the night.
There were people that cared about Saros, people who wanted to see him happy, Angelina had a terrible feeling in the pit of her stomach that the longer Saros spent in the care of the Malfoys that she was basically going to lose him. If they were going to let things take their natural course and Saros didn't end up remembering things from before, then Angelina could only assume that the Malfoys were going to use that to their advantage. They were going to manipulate Saros and his memory to mould him back into their "perfect" son and Saros wouldn't stand a fighting chance.
Meanwhile, as Angelina focused on going to war with the Malfoy family, back in St Mungo's, a peaceful air had fallen over the hospital. From all the commotion of being introduced to his parents and his little brother, he didn't even need the providing draught in order to fall asleep. He had fallen asleep in his mother's arms and no one really dared to move or speak so that they didn't wake him. Before his eyes had closed, Saros had expressed that he was looking forward to going home, he wanted to see where he had lived, and he wanted to spend more time around them.
He wanted to hear stories of his childhood, he wanted to know everything he possibly could about himself. The excitement behind it all had been too much for Saros as he just worked himself up until he nearly collapsed in Narcissa's arms. It was like holding her son as a toddler all over again. With his body resting against hers, she took to stroking his hair gently, allowing him to settle while her eyes glanced around the room until she met Lucius' gaze.
The two of them remained silent, but there were no words needed to be exchanged as it was clear the same thought crossed through their minds. For the weeks that Saros had been missing, the two of them had felt the strain of their marriage, the idea of losing a child had nearly broken them, even when they still had Draco to look after. They didn't want to dwell on such dark moments anymore, they didn't want to think about the previous thoughts that had crossed their minds when it came to believing Saros was dead.
But now that they had their eldest back in their care, they couldn't ignore the possibilities. For some reason, fate had decided to give them a second chance with Saros, a second chance at having their family back together as they had almost lost him before. Saros had formed all these new beliefs that even Narcissa couldn't believe who her son had become.
Draco blamed the people at school, influencing Saros mind to turn away from his family, Narcissa blamed her estranged sister for getting involved Saros' life when it wasn't her business, and Lucius blamed himself.
Lucius knew that all of the trouble with Saros had started right after the Quidditch World Cup, Saros had been furious with him. And from that point on, Saros only worked to separate himself from his family and Lucius knew it was all of his fault. He had been the one to drive Saros away and even as they fought to get Saros to return to them, it still hadn't been enough. And to make matters worse, Saros had nearly paid the ultimate price once again due to his father's actions.
The Dark Lord was angry with his followers for not exhibiting more loyalty, and he had expressed that in numerous ways among the Death Eaters. But when it came to Lucius' punishment, it wasn't Lucius that had to pay the price, but Saros. The Malfoy family was stuck because if they were not with the Dark Lord, they were against him, and Lucius knew what happened to those that turned their backs.
He had to keep his family safe, he had to keep Saros, Draco, and Narcissa safe, but how was he going to do that?
Once the Dark Lord learned about Saros' survival, there would be no way for Lucius to lie or keep it a secret. He would have to confront the Dark Lord and hope and pray that there would be some form of mercy granted. With Saros' memory swiped clean, Lucius hoped he could manipulate the situation in his favour. He could convince the Dark Lord that Saros was no longer a blood-traitor and he would be left alone.
Unable to even think about facing the Dark Lord right away, Lucius excused himself to get some fresh out of the room. Draco had drifted off in one of the chairs close to the bed, and Narcissa continued to hold Saros near and dear to her as he continued sleeping. Leaving the room, Lucius stood out in the corridor and rubbed his hand over his face. He realised he had yet to wake up, making it all a reality that he was currently standing in.
He needed to shake off his nerves and take charge in order to be there for his family like they needed him to be. Somehow, he was going to formulate something to keep his family safe during dark times. It hadn't been enough to show up when called, the Dark Lord, had wanted them to ignore their own lives, and dedicate all their time to searching for him. Lucius wouldn't dare to say such a thing out loud, but he thought it was utterly ridiculous for the Dark Lord to hold his followers to such standards.
By the time the Dark Lord fell, Lucius and Narcissa had their two sons, a baby and a toddler, was Lucius really expected to abandon them to go off in search of someone he wasn't even sure he had been destroyed? And who had been the one to slip the diary among Ginny Weasley's books back in Draco's second year in hopes of bringing the Dark Lord back? It hadn't been Lucius' fault that it failed, but then again, Lucius came to terms that he had nearly sent a little girl towards her death and was expecting mercy from the Dark Lord, who was a million times crueller.
Would this be some sort of karma for the Malfoy family? To get Saros back, only to lose him again when the Dark Lord ordered that he be killed again?
As Lucius wandered to stand outside of St Mungo's in the cool night air, he closed his eyes and tried to come up with something or he risked losing everything and everyone he had ever come to love.
Back in the room, Narcissa sat in the silence, only hearing the light snore that emitted from Draco every so often. She would glance back and forth between her sons to make sure they were sleeping comfortably. A couple of times she had attempted to move Saros so that he could actually lie down on his bed, but any sudden movement, he would wrap his arms around her waist and hold onto her tightly.
From that point on, she didn't dare move and when Lucius left the room, she let out a long sigh. They had both been thinking the same thing and neither one of them needed to say a word about it. They both wanted Saros home, they wanted to keep him safe, but they knew the threat of the Dark Lord had loomed over their heads. Even when Lucius failed to take the life of his own son, the Dark Lord figured the loss of Saros' life had been enough punishment. But he still expected loyalty from the Malfoy family.
At the time, Narcissa and Lucius had to take in consideration that they had to keep their remaining child safe. They had failed Saros, but they had to take care of Draco. However, given the opportunity to have Saros return to them, Narcissa had no idea what they were supposed to do. She could see the gears of her husband's mind at work as he was thinking of what they were going to do when word got out. Thankfully, they had been the only ones contacted, according to the Healer, and for the time being, that bought them more time to think of what they were going to do.
Or so they thought.
The door handle to their room started to move and Narcissa believed that Lucius was returning, what she didn't expect was to see her sister that she had not seen for years.
Andromeda Tonks entered the room, a small Healer flanking her side and telling the witch that she didn't have the authority to enter the room without permission. However, Andromeda's normally sweet demeanour had vanished as she threatened the Healer to leave her alone or she would spend the rest of eternity locked in a shoebox if she didn't give her a minute's privacy with her sister.
With wide eyes, the Healer quickly backed away before hurrying off, leaving Andromeda in the doorway. As the two former Black sisters stared at one another, the room fell completely silent as Draco and Saros continued to sleep. But while Andromeda opened her mouth, it was Narcissa that was the first to speak.
"What are you doing here?" she asked, placing one hand on top of Saros' head, partially covering his exposed ear. Although since he had taken the draught before he had fallen asleep, there was no chance of him waking up. "You have no right to be here-"
"Funny thing, I was going to say the same for you," Andromeda replied as her gaze fell onto Saros and then returned to her sister's gaze. "Just what do you think you're doing, Cissy. Haven't you put that boy through enough? The way you treated him before all of this and now you cuddle him up as if you've done no wrong."
"He's my son-"
"Well, you certainly didn't see him that way before, did you?" Andromeda countered with a hiss.
Narcissa had remembered that when the three of them were young, it was Andromeda who always came across as the softest one. She would often speak in gentle tones, offer a smile whenever she could, and always seemed to hold reassuring words. But her older sister no longer seemed to hold any sentiment towards Narcissa after many years of being disowned and cast out of the Black family, labelled as a blood-traitor.
She knew that during Saros' time being isolated that he had reached out to his aunt and it seemed they had formed a close enough bond, enough that Andromeda had decided to show up at the hospital. But she wasn't alone as Narcissa would soon learn as the door opened up again. At the sound of the door opening, it was Draco who stirred from his sleep, only to see Andromeda and now, Sirius Black inside the room.
Quickly, the boy moved to join where his mother and brother were sitting on the bed as Andromeda and Sirius glared in their direction as if they were the scum of the earth. It seemed Sirius was going to waste no time in getting Saros up and ready to leave as he called out his name, but Saros didn't budge from his slumber.
"He's asleep!" Narcissa snapped at her cousin. "Leave him alone! Leave all of us alone. You don't have any right to be here. He's my son, we're his family-"
"We're his family too!" Sirius added. "He considered us his family more so than you all after what you put him through. What's your plan, Cissy? Are you just going to lie to him? You're going to take advantage of the fact that he has no memory and you're going to brainwash him to your liking? You're going to force him to go back to the ways that he didn't agree with?!"
Sirius seemed to be on the verge of losing his temper as the seconds went on and to keep him calm, Andromeda placed her hand on his shoulder and moved him to take a step back so that she could at least try to reason with her sister. It had been the first time they had spoken face to face, but for the sake of Saros, Andromeda was willing to put all the hurt and anger behind from her past, just so she could get him out of the clutches of those that wanted him to fall backwards.
"Cissy," Andromeda forced the soft tone back to her voice, " you know this is wrong. You can't do this to Saros. I know you care about him, but you know this is wrong. He doesn't believe in what you all believe, he made that very clear. If you take him back and try to manipulate him, you're only going to hurt him further-"
"No-"
"Yes, you will! Suppose he starts to remember, what if he remembers everything that has happened to him, do you think he'll want to stay with you? Do you think he'll ever come to trust you again? He won't be happy-"
Narcissa shook her head at their words, visible tears streaming down the sides of her face as she tried to block out her sister's voice. They were wrong, she was going to take care of Saros and he was going to be happy. Their entire family was going to be happy, just like they were in older times.
"He'll be happy with us," Draco suddenly interjected, bringing all eyes on the room, " he'll be happier with us. He only wanted to be close with us again, this is what he would want. You all didn't make him as happy as the rest of us because he still wanted us in his life. This is what Saros wants."
Suddenly, Draco felt incredibly small under the eyes of Sirius Black, who stared him down as soon as he started to speak. The man's grey eyes seemed to match his own, but there was anger displayed on the man's face that caused Draco to swallow nervously. Just before the summer, Sirius Black had been labelled as a mass murderer, running around loose, but since Harry Potter had returned with Peter Pettigrew in his custody, Sirius was a free man. It had been Saros' doing in the first place, he had been the one to catch Peter Pettigrew and hand him off to Harry.
Taken inspiration from her son speaking out, Narcissa found her voice again. "I know what I need to do for my family. Saros is my son, regardless of what happened, I'm going to take care of him. I'm going to make sure he's safe-"
"You really think there won't be consequences for Saros surviving a Killing Curse cast by Voldemort himself?" Sirius asked, ignoring the flinching taking place around the room. " You think that's going to go over well? You're sending your son to slaughter-"
"NO!! NO!!" Narcissa screamed out and once again, Andromeda pushed Sirius back as he came across as too strong.
"Cissy, if you want to do the right thing for your family, then come with us," Andromeda offered, " all of you. Leave this life of hatred behind and start new. Show your son the example that he wanted to see. He never wanted to leave you but he wanted all of you to change. You can do it, we can help you. You'll be safe, all of you, and Saros will be safe while he tries to heal. Cissy, please, you have to do the right thing right now. Taking Saros home and pretending that nothing is wrong, will only cause further damage."
She lowered herself to her younger sister's eye level so that Narcissa had to look at her.
"I love Saros too," Andromeda said, " he's wonderful and I know how much you care about your children. I saw what you sent him, it's what you sent me. Cissy, I know deep down, part of you know what you should do. Please, let me help you. Let us help you, Draco, Lucius, and Saros."
The door to the room opened once more, but rather than more family members piling in to cause further drama, it seemed the threatened Healer had returned with security. Knowing that their time was up, Andromeda turned to Narcissa once more, hoping her words had made some sort of impact. There was hope in her gaze until Narcissa opened her mouth with her final words.
"Get out and leave me and my family alone."
