Work and Roses
It is now 7:00 pm and Frederick is out in the hallway staring at the fiery sunset. He suddenly hears footsteps coming towards him and he glances down the hallway and he notices Prince Henry walking over to him. Prince Henry stops next to Frederick and he grins a little bit.
Frederick: Henry what do you need?
Prince Henry: Nothing...I'm just glad you seem calm even though you have an important meeting with some generals tomorrow.
Frederick: Henry I need you and Fred to be at the meeting tomorrow. I can't tell my messenger to tell Fred that he's needed at the meeting. The messenger is a bit busy delivering the letters to the generals in Berlin at the moment.
Prince Henry: Frederick you know that Fred isn't happy with me at the moment.
Frederick: I know the situation. But I need you to do it, Henry.
Prince Henry: Fine Frederick. I'll go tell him. But before I go tell him have you had dinner Frederick?
Frederick: Yes I have Henry. Don't worry so much.
Prince Henry: I was just making sure you are taking care of yourself. I know you work a lot and you sometimes forget to take care of yourself. I'm your brother after all and I just want to make sure you are alright.
Frederick: I understand Henry.
Prince Henry walks down the hallway and he stops at the door to Prince Fredericks room. He gently knocks on the door.
Prince Henry: Fred.
Prince Frederick: What?
Prince Henry: Look if you are still annoyed at me I understand. But I need to tell you something important so please let me in.
Prince Frederick: Fine...
Prince Frederick opens the door and Prince Henry walks in closing the door behind him.
Prince Frederick: What do you need to tell me?
Prince Henry: There is an important meeting with some generals tomorrow.
Prince Frederick: Why are you telling me this?
Prince Henry: His Majesty wants you to come to the meeting.
Prince Frederick: Fine. I'll be there.
Prince Henry: See you tomorrow.
Prince Henry gently opens the door and walks out into the hallway. He glances down the hallway and he notices that Frederick must have gone back to his room. Prince Henry gently closes the door behind him and he starts walking towards Fredericks room. He stops in front of the door and gently knocks on it.
Prince Henry: Frederick?
Frederick: Yes what is it, Henry?
Prince Henry: Fred will be at the meeting tomorrow.
Frederick: Excellent.
Prince Henry: I will see you tomorrow Frederick.
Frederick: Yes.
Prince Henry walks off down the hallway.
A few hours later.
Frederick is lying in bed staring at the ceiling.
Frederick: I won't fail my kingdom. I won't lose any more people I care about.
Frederick quietly sighs to himself.
Frederick: Father if you are watching me. I don't care if you are not proud of me. I have made this nation a great nation and it will not fall. I will not let it. Long live our Fatherland...
Frederick slowly closes his eyes allowing sleep to take over. He slowly opens his eyes and he notices that he is lying in the middle of a battlefield. Smoke is still in the air from the recent cannon fire and gunfire. He slowly gets up and looks around noticing a lot of devastation and many lifeless bodies of French and Prussian soldiers. He feels uneasy due to the stillness in the air. He suddenly hears a faint voice calling to him.
???: Your Majesty...
Frederick rapidly walks in the direction of the faint voice. He suddenly notices a man with short dark brown hair and blue eyes along with a short beard who is wearing a Prussian Army uniform lying on the ground. He has been slashed through the chest with a sabre.
Frederick: Alexander...
Alexander: Keep my boy safe...
Frederick: If I meet him I will. I promise Alexander.
Alexander: Thank you, Your Majesty...
Frederick: Rest your soul, Alexander.
Alexander: Did I serve you well?
Frederick: Yes Alexander...Your loyalty will be missed, my friend.
Alexander: I will see you again when we are with the Lord.
Frederick: Yes my friend...
Alexander slowly closes his eyes. Frederick kneels in front of Alexanders body.
Frederick: May your soul rest peacefully with the Lord. Your loyalty will be missed by me and those close to you. You will never be forgotten for your bravery and loyalty to this nation and me. If I do ever meet your son I shall protect him. Goodbye Alexander until we meet again...
Frederick abruptly wakes up to someone opening the door. He slowly opens his eyes and he notices Voltaire entering his room. He notices the tears streaming down Voltaire's face.
Frederick: Nightmares again?
Voltaire: Yes...sorry for disturbing you, Frederick. I tried to be quiet.
Frederick: No... it's fine Voltaire. Do you need to sleep here again?
Voltaire starts blushing a lot.
Voltaire: I...Yes.
Frederick: It's alright I will comfort you if you need it.
Voltaire walks over to the other side of the bed gently takes his robe off and drops it on the floor. He gets into bed and starts trying to go back to sleep.
Frederick: No one will hurt you alright. You're safe here. I will protect you.
Voltaire: Frederick I don't want to lose you...
Frederick: You will never lose me.
Voltaire: I don't want to be alone.
Frederick: You won't be alone. Now sleep mon ami (my friend).
Voltaire slowly closes his eyes and goes into a peaceful sleep. Frederick also goes back to sleep.
A few hours later.
Voltaire slowly opens his eyes allowing them to adjust to the morning light shining into the room. He notices Frederick sitting at his desk writing something. Frederick stops writing and he stares at Voltaire noticing that he's awake. He smiles happily.
Frederick: Good Morning Voltaire.
Voltaire: Good Morning Frederick.
Frederick: You slept well.
Voltaire: What is the time Frederick?
Frederick looks at the clock on the wall and it reads 9:30 am.
Frederick: It's 9:30. Half an hour until the meeting.
Voltaire: What meeting?
Frederick: I'm having an important meeting with some of my generals.
Voltaire: I see...Well, I guess I should go get breakfast.
Frederick: I understand Voltaire.
Voltaire gets out of bed picks up his robe and instantly puts it on. He rapidly walks over to the door and immediately opens it. He walks out into the hallway and gently closes the door behind him. He then approaches a window and stares out it at the city of Potsdam.
Voltaire: Why did he let me sleep with him again? Does he know that I love him? No, he doesn't know. Besides Lawrence promised me that he would never tell Frederick. Will, I ever find the moment to tell him? I should just go get breakfast...
Voltaire rapidly walks down the hallway to go get breakfast.
30 minutes later.
Frederick, Prince Henry and Prince Frederick are in Fredericks private study standing around the table.
Prince Frederick: Why am I here?
Frederick: I will explain soon.
Prince Frederick: What are we waiting for?
Frederick: The generals I need to speak to. I guess they got held up with something...
Suddenly the door opens. A man with jet black hair and green eyes who is wearing a Prussian Cavalry uniform walks in. He gently closes the door behind him.
Frederick: Major General Ferdinand May thank you for coming.
Ferdinand May: The pleasure is mine, sir. I'm assuming that I'm early? Well, I was currently staying in Potsdam so I understand if I'm early.

Prince Henry: You alright Your Majesty?
Frederick: I'm fine. Just thinking about what is taking them so long.
A couple of minutes later the door suddenly opens again. A man with dark brown hair, brown eyes and a short beard along with a small scar on his left cheek who is wearing a Prussian Artillery uniform walks in. He gently closes the door behind him and he awkwardly stares at everyone.
Frederick: Major General Dominik Roth thank you for coming.

Frederick: Your lateness is excused, sir.
Dominik Roth: Thank you, Your Majesty.
Dominik Roth walks over to the large wooden table stops and stands next to Jonathan Frankenburg.
Dominik Roth: Thank you for saving my life in Russia sir. Those Russian Cossacks are brutal I still have the scar from the attack.
Jonathan Frankenburg: It's my pleasure, sir.
Frederick awkwardly stares at the table and Prince Henry gently puts his hand on his shoulder. Frederick awkwardly stares at Prince Henry.
Prince Henry: Are you sure you are alright?
Frederick: Yes I'm fine Henry.
Prince Henry: Just making sure.
The door suddenly opens again and in walks a man with ginger hair and blue eyes who is wearing a Prussian Infantry uniform along with golden glasses. He gently closes the door behind him.
Frederick: Major General Steffen Harnisch thank you for coming.
Steffen Harnisch: Sorry for my lateness I had to stop two soldiers from having a duel on the way here sir. I didn't want any innocent civilians to get hurt by accident.

Steffen Harnisch: No Thank You sir for saving my life.
Frederick: Alright let me explain why you are all here.
Everyone in the room goes silent.
Frederick: I'm planning to send 110,000 men to help the British Army with this war against the French.
Everyone stares at Frederick.
Frederick: Major General May.
Ferdinand May: Yes Your Majesty?
Frederick: I need a division of your men at least 20,000 hussars.

Steffen Harnisch: Yes Your Majesty?
Frederick: I need a division of your men at least 10,000 regular infantry and 10,000 light infantry.
Steffen Harnisch: Yes Your Majesty I can do that.
Frederick: Also Major General Harnisch Prince Frederick will be serving under you, sir.
Prince Frederick awkwardly stares at Steffen Harnisch.
Steffen Harnisch: But shouldn't I be serving under the Prince sir. After all, he is the heir to this kingdom.
Prince Frederick: Why should I serve under him. I am the Prince of Prussia! Heir to your throne why are you making me serve under someone!?
Frederick: Calm yourself, Your Highness.
Prince Frederick: I shouldn't be serving under anyone!
Prince Frederick clenches his fist and he hits the table out of anger. Everyone beside him slowly backs off out of fear and nervousness.
Frederick: Your Highness leave us.
Prince Frederick: Why should I.
Frederick: I don't need to explain my reasoning leave us.
Prince Frederick: I am not a child I can do what I want!
Frederick: Leave us! That is an order!
Prince Frederick quickly storms past everyone and walks over to the door opens it walks out into the hallway and violently slams the door behind him. The two men that we're standing beside Prince Frederick awkwardly go back to standing in the places they were previously in.

Steffen Harnisch: It's fine sir...
Frederick: Now let's get back to the plan.
Frederick looks at Lukas Buchman.
Frederick: Major General Buchman.

Frederick: Thank You, Prince Henry.
Prince Henry: It's my duty, Your Majesty to help protect this kingdom.
Frederick: You will report your orders to your commanders. Tell them that these are important orders from the King and that they must be followed. You may leave.
The five Major Generals leave the room and Prince Henry stares at Frederick.
Prince Henry: They reminded you of what happened in Russia with Augustus. I could tell you were clearly uncomfortable when they mentioned the battle in Russia.
Frederick: Henry you know not to make people like that worry about me. That's why I lied to you about saying that I'm fine. Also, go check on Fred to make sure he isn't causing trouble.
Prince Henry: Sorry. Also yes I will Your Majesty.
Frederick: I don't want to deal with his outbursts of anger right now. Also, please don't hurt him like you almost did last time.
Prince Henry: Sorry...Just he could have killed you and I wanted to make sure he didn't.
Frederick: He wouldn't kill me...Just go check on him, please.
Prince Henry: Yes Frederick.
Meanwhile, outside of the palace at the front entrance, Prince Frederick is sitting at the edge of the large fountain trying to calm down. He clenches his fists out of rage.
Prince Frederick: Why must I be put under the command of someone. I am the heir to this kingdom...
He suddenly hears nearby footsteps behind him. He then notices the Major Generals nervously walking past him back to their carriages. Prince Frederick then instantly stands up.
Prince Frederick: Why should I serve under you!?
The Major Generals turn around and nervously stare at Prince Frederick.
Steffen Harnisch: It's His Majesty's order sir.
Prince Frederick: I am the heir to this kingdom I shouldn't be serving under anyone!
The Major Generals put their hands close to their swords and guns.
Prince Frederick: You wouldn't dare hurt the heir to this kingdom. Don't even think about raising your weapons!
Lukas Buchman: Your Highness we do not plan to hurt you but if you threaten us we will raise our weapons in self-defence.
Dominik Roth: But if you do harm us we have the right to tell His Majesty and Prince Henry.
Steffen Harnisch: We are just following orders Your Highness.
Prince Frederick: You should also follow my orders as well!
Steffen Harnisch: We do Your Highness. But since these orders came from the King himself we can't change our orders. Only the King can change these orders.
Lukas Buchman: And the King can be hard to convince sometimes.
Steffen Harnisch: I'm sorry Your Highness but you will just have to serve under me unless you can convince the King.
Prince Frederick: Well I order you to override that order, sir!
Steffen Harnisch: I can't do that, Your Highness.
There is suddenly a gunshot behind Prince Frederick.
Prince Henry: Prince Frederick enough! Generals, you may leave.
The Major Generals quickly get into their carriages and the carriages start riding down the hill and into the distance. Prince Frederick immediately turns around and he glares up at Prince Henry who is standing on the stairs to the palace.
Prince Henry: Get inside Fred and go to your room!
Prince Frederick: Fine...
Prince Frederick quickly runs up the stairs once he reaches the top he stops and glares at Prince Henry for a few seconds. He then storms past Prince Henry and goes inside the palace.
Prince Henry: Jesus Christ...
Prince Henry calmly walks inside the palace.

Frederick is looking out the window at the city of Potsdam.
Frederick: War is coming...
He suddenly hears footsteps coming down the hallway. He glances down the hallway and he notices Prince Frederick rapidly approaching him. Prince Frederick stops in front of Frederick. He suddenly shoves Frederick up against the wall.
Frederick: Fred stand down.
Prince Frederick: I don't want to be put under someone's command!
Frederick: Fred release me...
Prince Frederick: Change the order!
Frederick: No you are not experienced enough to command your own division let alone an army!
Prince Frederick: I am the heir to your throne!
Voltaire suddenly opens the door and he nervously stares at what is going on. He grabs his pistol off his desk and nervously exits his room gently closing the door behind him.
Voltaire: Your Highness release him!
Prince Frederick: Voltaire leave this is none of your business.
Voltaire: Don't hurt him!
Voltaire suddenly shoots the top of the window causing it to shatter into a million pieces.
Prince Frederick: Jesus Christ what the hell are you trying to do!?
Voltaire: Stop trying to hurt Frederick, you bastard!
Frederick: Voltaire calm down.
Prince Frederick: Don't insult me!
Voltaire: Your trying to hurt Frederick aren't you Your Highness. So release him!
Prince Frederick: Why would I hurt him...I promised that I wouldn't hurt him...
Voltaire feels the adrenaline rushing through his veins. He raises his pistol and he cautiously walks towards Prince Frederick. The tone in his voice gradually changes from fear to anger.
Voltaire: Stay away from Frederick Your Highness...
Prince Frederick: Do you really think that I'm afraid of you Voltaire.
Frederick: Voltaire put the pistol down.
Prince Frederick: Exactly listen to him, Voltaire.
Voltaire: No I want you to back away from Frederick Your Highness and release him.
Prince Frederick feels his heart beating faster due to feeling slightly nervous and angry. He glares into Fredericks sky blue eyes noticing slight fear and mostly confusion in them.
Frederick: Let me go, Fred...
Prince Frederick: I just want the order changed!
Frederick: No Fred I'm not changing the order!
Voltaire: Release him, Your Highness!
Prince Frederick suddenly shoves Frederick out of the shattered window but Frederick grabs the window ledge cutting his hands on the broken glass. Prince Frederick instantly runs off down the hallway. Voltaire drops his pistol out of fear and he hastily runs over to the shattered window he holds out his hand. Frederick gently grabs Voltaire's hand and he climbs back into the palace. Frederick stares at the thick crimson liquid on his hands.
Voltaire: He tried to kill you again...
Frederick's vision suddenly becomes blurry.
Voltaire: Frederick are you alright?
Frederick suddenly faints out of shock.
Voltaire: Frederick!
Voltaire hastily kneels beside Frederick and he starts gently shaking him trying to wake him.
Voltaire: Frederick!
Voltaire suddenly hears footsteps coming down the hallway. He suddenly hears a familiar voice.
Prince Henry: Voltaire?
Voltaire: Your Highness, please come over here!
Prince Henry: Alright.
Prince Henry hastily walks over and he notices that Frederick is lying on the floor with cuts on his hands. He also notices that one of the windows is completely shattered.
Prince Henry: Jesus Christ...what happened?
Voltaire: He tried to kill Frederick!
Prince Henry: Who did?
Voltaire: Prince Frederick!
Prince Henry: Scheiße. (Shit)
Voltaire: I also might have shot the window...But I was afraid that he was going to harm Frederick...
Prince Henry: Voltaire...I understand. Let's get him to his room and get the doctor to check his hands. Along with getting his stitches out.
Prince Henry gently picks Frederick up and he starts carrying him to his room. Voltaire gets up off the floor quickly walks over to his gun picks it up and puts it on his belt. He then starts rapidly following Prince Henry.
Voltaire: Is he alright?
Prince Henry: Other than the bleeding hands he seems alright. He must have just fainted from the shock of almost being killed by Prince Frederick.
Prince Henry stops in front of the door to Fredericks room. Voltaire gently opens the door and they walk inside. Prince Henry gently puts Frederick on his bed.
Prince Henry: Let's let him rest I'm going to go talk to Fred and sort out other things. I'll be back in an hour with the doctor you stay here with him Voltaire.
Prince Henry promptly walks out of the room and gently closes the door behind him. Voltaire walks over to the bed sits next to Frederick and starts gently stroking Fredericks hair.
Voltaire: I'm sorry that this happened to you, Frederick...I'll go get something for you.
An hour later.
Frederick suddenly starts waking up he feels pain in his hand. He slowly opens his eyes and he notices Doctor Reinhart taking out his stitches. He stares at his right hand which has a bandage on it.
Doctor Reinhart: What happened Your Majesty?
Frederick: None of your business Doctor.
Doctor Reinhart: Sorry if I'm hurting you.
Frederick: It's fine it's not that bad.
Doctor Reinhart finishes taking out the stitches and he starts bandaging Fredericks left hand.
Frederick: Will I be able to still use my hands?
Doctor Reinhart: Yes Your Majesty. Just get some rest for now.
Frederick: Alright.
Doctor Reinhart promptly walks over to the door gently opens it and exits the room closing the door behind him. Frederick slowly closes his eyes allowing sleep to take over.
30 minutes later.
Frederick abruptly wakes up to Voltaire entering the room with yellow roses in a white and gold vase.
Frederick: Voltaire?
Voltaire starts blushing a little bit as he notices Frederick is awake.
Voltaire: I thought you were still asleep I wanted to surprise you with these roses.
Frederick: Oh, I see.
Voltaire: Do...you like them.
Frederick: Yes Voltaire I do like them.
Voltaire: Yellow roses are nice. Yellow also means happiness.
Voltaire walks over to Fredericks desk and he gently places the vase onto the desk. He smiles at Frederick.
Voltaire: I'm sorry about what happened to you, Frederick.
Frederick: How did I get here in my room?
Voltaire: You fainted...possibly from the shock of the Prince almost killing you. Prince Henry carried you here. You were possibly out for an hour.
Frederick: I see...But him doing that just reminded me of something that I don't want to talk about...
Voltaire: Prince Henry said he talked with the Prince. I stayed here for most of the time except for when I went to get the roses for you.
Frederick: I knew that I felt someone stroking my hair.
Voltaire starts blushing a lot.
Voltaire: I thought that you wouldn't notice that...
Frederick: It was actually comforting...
Voltaire: I see...
Frederick: It wasn't bothering me, Voltaire. I understand that you were possibly trying to comfort me.
Voltaire: I understand.
Frederick: You care about me and you want to make sure I'm alright...Just like I care about you.
Voltaire: Do you need me to get you anything?
Frederick: Not right now Voltaire I need to get some rest.
Voltaire: I understand Frederick.
Frederick: Thank you for the roses I think they are beautiful Voltaire.
Voltaire: I'm glad you like them, Frederick...I will see you soon I'm guessing.
Frederick: Yes mon ami. (my friend)
Voltaire walks over to the door he gently opens it and exits the room gently closing the door behind him. Frederick slowly closes his eyes once more allowing sleep to take over.
