Letting Go of the Past
It is currently 7:30 and Wellington slowly opens his eyes allowing them to adjust to the morning light. He looks over to Kitty Wellesley who is already awake. Kitty notices that Wellington is awake and she smiles cheerfully at him. Kitty starts speaking in a cheerful voice.
Kitty Wellesley: Good morning Arthur.
Wellington: Good morning my dear.
Kitty Wellesley: What are you planning to do today?
Wellington: Something that I've been meaning to do for a while.
Kitty Wellesley: What is that Arthur?
Wellington: I feel like it's time for me to let go of my relationship with Henry.
Kitty Wellesley stares at Wellington with a look of concern on her face. Then she starts speaking in a slightly concerned tone.
Kitty Wellesley: Arthur are you going to have to see Henry again?
Wellington: Yes. Because I have to tell him that our relationship is over.
Kitty Wellesley: This is a hard thing for you to do you realise that.
Wellington: Yes, I understand that this will be hard for me to do. He is still my brother. But I feel that our relationship has broken apart.
Kitty Wellesley: You're doing the right thing, Arthur. But it is going to hurt you. I can tell that you seem hesitant about your decision.
Wellington: Yes I am just upset that I'm going to have to do this to my brother. I didn't want this to happen. But at the same time, I know that it's the only decision I have. Henry hates me now.
Kitty Wellesley: I would be upset too if I had to do what you are doing now Arthur.
Wellington: I had thought that I would be able to repair this relationship. But I was wrong and Im just going to have to let go.
Kitty Wellesley notices some tears slowly streaming down Wellington's face. She then gently wipes them away and starts speaking in a comforting voice.
Kitty Wellesley: I will be here for you Arthur. I will always be here for you.
Wellington: Thank you, my love.
Kitty Wellesley: You know that this is possibly the only decision you have. Don't doubt yourself, Arthur.
Wellington: I'm not doubting myself it's just I wish that there was another way.
Kitty Wellesley: I understand that Arthur.
Wellington: I don't think that there is another way for me to do something different about this.
Kitty Wellesley: I understand that Arthur.
Wellington: I would never hurt Henry even after our relationship has ended. Also even though we are now on the opposite sides of this war.
Kitty Wellesley: Understandable Arthur.
Wellington: But I don't know why I'm feeling so hesitant about my decision.
Kitty Wellesley: It's a hard decision to make Arthur. But I know that you can do it.
Wellington happily gets out of bed and walks over to his desk. Then he grabs his blue coat and puts it on. He then neatly and gently buttons it up. Wellington then sits down at his desk and grabs his boots and puts them on and carefully ties them up. Kitty Wellesley starts speaking in a calm and pleasant voice.
Kitty Wellesley: I know that you can do this. I also know that you know that you can do this. You are a very confident man Arthur.
Wellington: Thank you, my dear Kitty.
Kitty Wellesley: I believe in you, Arthur.
Wellington: Thank you again, my love. I shall be going now.
Kitty Wellesley: Stay safe Arthur. I don't want you to get hurt again. I don't like seeing you hurt Arthur.
Wellington: I promise that nothing will happen to me, Kitty.
Wellington calmly exits the tent and he begins calmly walking to the outskirts of the tent. Suddenly he hears footsteps behind him so he stops and turns around. He notices Lord Uxbridge staring at him with a concerned and slightly serious look on his face. Lord Uxbridge starts speaking in a calm yet serious voice.
Lord Uxbridge: Where are you going, sir?
Wellington: I'm going to go see Henry. I'm going to end our relationship.
Lord Uxbridge: You are not going alone, sir.
Wellington: Uxbridge this is a private matter.
Lord Uxbridge: Sir he tried to kill you three times!
Wellington: I understand that Uxbridge. But this is a private matter between me and Henry!
Lord Uxbridge: But sir you need protection he could kill you!
Wellington: Uxbridge I would prefer if this matter would be private. I don't want anyone else to know about this situation. It is something I don't want the public to know!
Lord Uxbridge: I understand that sir its just that I am concerned about your safety.
Wellington: I know that you are concerned about that. But please Uxbridge just allow me to deal with this situation myself.
Lord Uxbridge: Yes sir.
Wellington: I shall be going now. I suggest that you get back to your duties Uxbridge.
Lord Uxbridge: Yes sir.
Lord Uxbridge calmly walks off and Wellington then continues making his way to the French camp. Meanwhile, in the British camp Lord Uxbridge promptly walks over to Benedict Fraser who is sitting on a log. Lord Uxbridge starts speaking in a calm yet serious voice.
Lord Uxbridge: Colonel Fraser I need you to do something important.
Benedict Fraser: What is it that you need me to do sir?
Lord Uxbridge: I need you to send out some scouts to go near the French camp.
Benedict Fraser: I can do that sir.
Lord Uxbridge: Good Colonel.
Lord Uxbridge hastily walks off then Benedict Fraser gets up and promptly walks off. A couple of minutes later, in the Prussian camp, Benedict Fraser walks over to Lawrence who is sitting on a log staring at his necklace. Benedict Fraser starts speaking in a calm yet serious voice.
Benedict Fraser: Lieutenant Sundermann.
Lawrence looks up and stares at Benedict Fraser and he starts speaking in a calm voice.
Lawrence: Yes sir?
Benedict Fraser: How do you feel about doing a scouting mission Lieutenant?
Lawrence: Yes sir I shall do that if you wish me to.
Benedict Fraser: Excellent I need you to go and do a scouting mission near the French camp.
Lawrence: Yes sir.
Benedict Fraser: Good luck Lieutenant.
Benedict Fraser calmly walks off and Lawrence notices Frederick gazing at him with slight concern. Frederick starts speaking in a calm yet slightly concerned tone.
Frederick: You seem to be going on a lot of missions Lawrence.
Lawrence: Indeed Your Majesty.
Frederick: I just hope that you be careful.
Lawrence: I will your Majesty. I'm also not afraid of having to kill some French bastards.
Frederick: You are just like your father. He wasn't afraid to kill anyone including the French. He probably wouldn't be afraid to kill the French Emperor if he was still here. But don't get yourself killed Lawrence.
Lawrence: I won't your Majesty. But when will you tell me more about my father?
Frederick: After this war Lawrence. There are some things that I will need more time to explain. There isn't enough time currently to explain it all.
Lawrence: I understand that Your Majesty.
Frederick: Good luck Lawrence.
Lawrence: Thank you, Your Majesty.
Lawrence calmly gets up and begins walking to the British camp. Meanwhile, in the forest near the French camp, Wellington is cautiously walking around.
*Wellington in thought*
I can't believe that I'm doing this...It feels so wrong.
But it's the only decision I have. I know that Henry won't want to reconcile with me.
He doesn't care about our relationship anymore and I think it's time we separate.
I think it's time that we let go of our pasts.
I just know that Henry will probably just want to forget about my existence. So it's the best thing that I just let go of this relationship.
But it feels so wrong.
I also don't understand why Uxbridge doesn't understand that this matter is private. I don't want guards around me while dealing with a private matter.
I don't want the public to know about this and that includes my own Army. I don't want a lot of people to know about this scandal.
Wellington carefully steps on a log and then he accidentally slips and stumbles backwards. He then quietly sighs to himself out of frustration. Wellington gazes up at the sky that is starting to darken with storm clouds. He then feels tears slowly streaming down his face.
*Wellington in thought*
Why couldn't I just fix the situation between me and Henry?
Then this mess of a scandal wouldn't have happened at all.
I wouldn't have to let go of this relationship.
I wouldn't be hurting so much. I just want to let my emotions out. I feel that my mental state is falling apart.
I know that Kitty will always be there for me and I know that she will comfort me.
I'm not sure if I will feel better once I end the relationship between me and Henry. I know that it's going to upset me. But I don't know what will happen after all the sadness.
I guess I better continue walking to the French camp.
Wellington carefully gets up and brushes off his uniform. Then he carefully climbs over the log and continues walking to the French camp. A few minutes later he hears rustling behind him. Wellington stops and cautiously draws his sabre. He then begins cautiously looking around. Suddenly Damian Barker and Sherkov Danilovich calmly walk up to Wellington. Damian starts speaking in a calm voice.
Damian Barker: What are you doing here Brit?
Wellington: I'm here on a private mission. I have some personal business to deal with.
Damian Barker: I see. But you are getting close to the French camp and I know that they would most definitely want to capture you if they see you.
Wellington: I understand that. But I don't want any guards. I would prefer the public to not know about this personal business I'm going to deal with.
Damian Barker: Understandable, not many people would like their private business to be public. But just don't get yourself killed your Army needs you. Your wife also needs you. Good luck with your mission.
Damian Barker and Sherkov Danilovich calmly walk off back towards the British camp. Wellington then puts his sabre back into his sheath and continues walking in the direction of the French camp. A few minutes later there is a loud clap of thunder and rain starts pelting down. Suddenly Wellington hears more rustling and he stops and turns around.
He notices Victor Nyland staring at him. He also notices the severed deer head on one of the blades of the double-bladed weapon. Wellington starts speaking in a calm voice.
Wellington: Good hunt I see.
Victor Nyland: Yes. But I must ask why are you here Englishman?
Wellington: I'm going to end the relationship with my brother.
Victor Nyland: Letting go is probably best for you. It's also possibly best for your brother.
Wellington: I have realised that now. Even though it was a hard decision for me to make.
Victor Nyland: Well, it's a hard thing to do he is your brother and you will feel hurt by it.
Wellington: I didn't want it to come to this. I wanted to try and repair the relationship. But now I understand that it's too far gone.
Victor Nyland: I could tell that you wanted to repair it. You have a lot of determination and you are possibly a little stubborn.
Wellington: I'm not stubborn. Also, I better continue on my way to the French camp.
Victor Nyland: Alright but don't get yourself killed Englishman.
Wellington: I won't get myself killed.
Victor Nyland starts walking in the direction of the British camp. Wellington continues walking in the direction of the French camp. Meanwhile near the French camp by a lake Joseph Ney has just finished bathing and is putting his clothes on. Suddenly he hears a calm voice behind him.
Henry Wellesley: Joseph where did you get those scars from? Did you get flogged for something?
Joseph Ney: The French Army don't flog their own. I got these scars from battle.
Henry Wellesley: Well you are lucky. I was flogged after I attacked my brother.
Joseph Ney: Thats just awful that the British Army flog their soldiers.
Henry Wellesley: I'm glad I left I won't be punished in such a manner again.
Joseph Ney finishes putting his clothes on and carefully buttons up his coat. Then he smiles a little bit and starts speaking in a calm voice.
Joseph Ney: Let's head back to the camp after all it's raining. I don't think we want to get completely drenched.
Henry Wellesley: Your right Joseph let's get back to the camp.
Joseph Ney: Well let's go then.
Joseph Ney and Henry Wellesley begin calmly and quickly walking back to the camp. A few minutes later, in the forest near the French camp, Wellington is hiding behind a tree. Then he cautiously looks around the corner and notices Henry sitting on a log alone. Wellington then picks up a small stone and throws it at Henry then he hides back behind the tree.
Henry Wellesley gets up off the log and walks into the forest. Suddenly he notices Wellington leaning up against a tree. Then he tackles Wellington to the ground and Wellington starts speaking in a calm and quiet voice.
Wellington: Henry please I have something to say.
Henry Wellesley: What do you want?
Wellington: Just let me speak Henry, please.
Henry Wellesley: Fine I will let you speak.
Wellington: I understand that you hate me. I have now realised that I should have done this a while ago. But I didn't want to because I thought our relationship could be repaired.
Henry Wellesley: What are you saying, Arthur?
Wellington: I've come here to end our relationship.
Henry Wellesley: I doubt that you would be able to do that. I know that you still love me, Arthur. You have told me many times.
Wellington: I'm being serious Henry!
Henry Wellesley: Really?
Wellington: Yes Henry. Our relationship is over and you have another friend anyway.
Wellington shoves Henry Wellesley off of himself and he gets up and begins hastily walking away. He feels the tears streaming down his face. Suddenly he hears someone running towards him. He stops and turns around and Henry violently tackles him to the ground. Henry Wellesley starts speaking in an enraged voice.
Henry Wellesley: You hate me don't you!?
Wellington: No Henry I don't hate you. I just ended our relationship because of what has happened.
Henry Wellesley: This has happened because of you. It is all your fault, Arthur! You have never cared about me at all!
Wellington: I do still care about you Henry I just think that we should separate for good.
Henry Wellesley: You are such a liar Arthur!
Wellington: I'm not lying Henry.
Henry Wellesley: You know that this situation wouldn't have happened if you cared about me more. Our relationship wouldn't be broken.
Wellington: This is why I'm ending our relationship, Henry. I know that this would be for the best for both of us.
Henry Wellesley: No one just ends a relationship while still caring about the other person Arthur.
Wellington: Well, I do. I will never hate you Henry even though you hate me. My love for you will still be there even though I probably will never see you again after this war. Now just let me go, Henry, it's over and you have to accept that.
Henry Wellesley: Fine Goodbye Arthur.
Henry Wellesley gets up off Wellington and walks off back to the French camp. Wellington gets up and hastily brushes off his uniform. Then he begins promptly walking in the direction of the British camp.
*Wellington in thought*
I can't believe that I just did that. It felt so wrong.
Was that the right thing to do? It seems that Henry didn't accept that we needed to end that relationship.
He still blames this whole situation on me which is just making me hurt more.
I'm still blaming myself for this situation. It feels that this whole situation is all my fault.
I don't know how I'm going to figure out not to blame myself for this whole situation. I just want to stop feeling so awful about this whole situation.
I should just concentrate on where I'm going.
Suddenly Wellington notices Henry Wellesley standing in front of him and he immediately stops. Henry starts speaking in an enraged voice.
Henry Wellesley: This is all your fault Arthur and you know that!
Suddenly lightning flashes and Henry Wellesley disappears. Wellington sighs out of frustration and slight sadness. He then continues calmly walking.
*Wellington in thought*
Why won't this madness just disappear?
What is wrong with me!?
I don't want to have to be in any more pain than I'm in right now.
I don't want this madness upsetting me or bothering me at any inconvenient moment! I just want it to disappear!
But I don't know how to make it disappear.
I'm afraid to tell Kitty about this. But I have a feeling I will have to eventually tell her. I don't want her to think I'm insane.
Maybe I shouldn't tell Kitty about it. That's possibly not a good idea at all. No, I need to tell her eventually I can't just hide this secret from her forever.
I better get back quickly before any of the French know that I'm out here. I'm not keen on getting myself captured.
Wellington suddenly hears a lot of rustling behind him and he immediately stops. Then he puts his hand on the hilt of his sabre. He starts speaking in a calm yet serious voice.
Wellington: Who's there? I ask you to come out immediately.
Lawrence, Benedict Fraser and six more soldiers come out from behind the trees. Wellington turns around and stares at them with a serious look on his face. He then starts speaking in a serious and slightly confused voice.
Wellington: Who sent you here?
Benedict Fraser: Lord Uxbridge sent us here sir.
Wellington: Why did he send you here?
Benedict Fraser: A scouting mission sir.
Wellington: I see.
Benedict Fraser: We were just heading back to camp sir.
Wellington: I see. Well let's start heading back, shall we?
Benedict Fraser: Yes sir.
Wellington, Benedict Fraser, Lawrence and the six other soldiers begin walking back to the camp. A few minutes later Wellington walks back to his tent and enters the tent. Kitty Wellesley stares at Wellington and she notices the tears streaming down his face. She then starts speaking in a calm and comforting voice.
Kitty Wellesley: Arthur are you alright?
Wellington: No I feel what I did was wrong.
Kitty Wellesley: I understand that Arthur.
Wellington: I'm still wishing that I could have mended the relationship between me and Henry. I didn't want to end this relationship.
Kitty Wellesley: If I had to do that I would be feeling the same way as you. Now, do you want to come sit down Arthur?
Wellington: Yes Kitty I do.
Wellington calmly walks over to Kitty and sits down beside her on the bed. Kitty Wellesley gently puts her hand on Wellington's shoulder. She then starts speaking in a soft and warm voice.
Kitty Wellesley: Arthur it's alright if you want to cry.
Wellington: I know.
Kitty Wellesley: You know it's not good to bottle your emotions up like that Arthur.
Wellington: I understand that.
Kitty Wellesley: You can let them out, Arthur.
Wellington starts crying a lot and Kitty Wellesley starts gently rubbing Wellington's back. She then continues speaking in a soft and warm voice.
Kitty Wellesley: It's alright Arthur just let it out.
Wellington: It feels like this whole situation is my fault!
Kitty Wellesley: It's not your fault that Henry left you, Arthur.
Wellington: I wish I could have stopped this situation from happening. Then I wouldn't be so broken!
Kitty Wellesley: I understand that Arthur.
A few minutes later Wellington has stopped crying and is starting to regain his composure. Kitty Wellesley starts speaking in a calm voice.
Kitty Wellesley: Do you feel better now Arthur?
Wellington: I feel slightly better. I understand that it's best for me to let my emotions out instead of bottling them up.
Kitty Wellesley: I'm glad that you feel better Arthur. But I can also tell that you want to tell me something.
Wellington: Yes, I do need to tell you something, Kitty. But I'm worried that you might think that I'm crazy.
Kitty Wellesley: I would never think of you that way Arthur.
Wellington: The truth is I have been seeing things. I think that it's because of stress and I don't know how to make it stop.
Kitty Wellesley: Arthur I understand that this is a stressful situation. But I am here to help you and calm your mind. I will always be here for you and I would never leave you.
Wellington: Thank you for being so understanding Kitty.
Kitty Wellesley: Your welcome Arthur.
Wellington begins passionately kissing Kitty Wellesley on the lips. A couple of minutes later Wellington gently breaks the kiss and he smiles a little at Kitty. He then starts speaking in a calm voice.
Wellington: I shall go do my work now my dear Kitty.
Kitty Wellesley: Alright Arthur. But please don't work too hard. You do still need rest. You are still injured and sleep might help you with your stress.
Wellington: I won't work too hard I promise Kitty.
Wellington calmly gets up from the bed and walks over to his desk. Then he sits down and begins carefully writing something. A couple of hours later Lord Uxbridge enters the tent. Wellington stops writing and looks up from his work and sternly stares at Lord Uxbridge. He then starts speaking in a calm yet serious voice.
Wellington: Uxbridge why did you send those men out this morning?
Lord Uxbridge: Just a scouting mission sir.
Wellington: I doubt that it was just a scouting mission Uxbridge.
Lord Uxbridge: What do you mean sir?
Wellington: You sent them out to protect me as well as the scouting mission. I said to you that I didn't need protection.
Lord Uxbridge: Yes sir.
Wellington: Please don't do that again Uxbridge. I don't need guards or anyone else to know about my private matters.
Lord Uxbridge: I understand that sir and I apologise for what I did.
Wellington: I accept your apology. Now if you don't have anything else to tell me you may leave Uxbridge.
Lord Uxbridge quietly and calmly exits the tent and Wellington continues with his work. A couple of hours later Wellington stops writing and grabs his golden pocket watch out of his pocket. Then he gently opens it and notices that the time is 11:30. He then gently closes his pocket watch and puts it back in his pocket. Wellington then begins reading over some of the work he has written. Kitty Wellesley notices this and she starts speaking in a calm voice.
Kitty Wellesley: Arthur is something bothering you?
Wellington: No nothing is bothering me at all. I'm just reading over my work and well making sure that everything is correct.
Kitty Wellesley: You are still upset with the situation with Henry aren't you?
Wellington: A little bit yes. But other than that nothing else is bothering me.
Kitty Wellesley: Are you going to take a break soon Arthur? I just feel that you need one after what has happened this morning.
Wellington: Kitty I will take a break soon I promise you that.
Kitty Wellesley: You know that I don't like it when you work too much. You sometimes end up not getting enough sleep.
Wellington: I know that.
Kitty Wellesley: I want you to be taking care of yourself, Arthur.
Wellington: I will take better care of myself, Kitty.
Kitty Wellesley: I'm glad that you will do that.
Wellington: Now I will continue with reading this and then I will take a break alright?
Kitty Wellesley: Alright Arthur.
Wellington continues calmly reading over his work. While Kitty Wellesley patiently waits for him to take a break.
To be Continued...
