Just Like Him
It is currently 8:30 am and Lawrence is standing on top of a hill gazing out at the vast grassy plain. Suddenly he notices something small moving in the grass in the distance. Grabbing his rifle he aims it at the small thing in the distance and concentrates on it. Suddenly he fires his rifle and ends up hitting the target. Then he hears someone approaching him along with a calm voice.
Frederick: Good shot Lieutenant.
Lawrence: I didn't realise that someone was watching me.
Frederick: Well you are not the only one who likes looking out at something as peaceful as this. I also just didn't want to disturb you while you were preparing to make your shot.
Lawrence: It is indeed peaceful out here...
Frederick: Makes me wonder how long the peace will last.
Lawrence: I'm sure that once this war is over the peace will last for many years.
Frederick: Peace doesn't last forever...But I do hope that when I am gone. My kingdom still stands and Europe is at peace.
Lawrence: I'm sure that will happen Your Majesty.
Frederick: After this war, I just want to live the rest of my life in peace with Voltaire. Anyway, are you going to go get that?
Lawrence: Yes.
Lawrence begins quickly marching down the hill. While Frederick continues glancing out at the vast and peaceful plains.
*Frederick in thought*
He reminds me so much of his father.
He is polite and caring just like his father.
His father cared so much about him. It's a shame that he never got to see Lawrence grow up.
I also miss his father as well. He was an amazing General.
His loyalty to my kingdom will always be remembered.
He was also one of the few Generals who I had an actual friendship with...
I'm sure that someday Lawrence will be a great General like his father...
A few minutes later Lawrence marches back up the hill with a rabbit in hand. Noticing that Frederick is still gazing out over the vast grassy plains. He starts speaking in a calm yet slightly confused tone.
Lawrence: Are you alright Your Majesty?
Frederick: Just thinking Lawrence...That's all.
Lawrence: I see. Well, I will be heading back to the camp.
Frederick: Yes Lieutenant.
Lawrence begins calmly strolling back to the camp. Suddenly Ronnie Watson walks up to Lawrence and starts speaking in a snarky tone.
Ronnie Watson: Manage to kill something, you pathetic bastard.
Lawrence: Just leave me alone Ronnie I don't want to fight.
Ronnie Watson: Your just saying that because you are too weak or too scared to fight me!
Lawrence: I'm not afraid of you.
Ronnie Watson suddenly roughly shoves Lawrence to the ground. He then starts speaking in a tone full of hostility.
Ronnie Watson: Well fight me then you weak piece of filth!
Lawrence: I'm not going to fight you! You are my brother!
Ronnie Watson: You are not my brother you filthy bastard!
Lawrence: I'm still not going to fight you!
Ronnie Watson: Pathetic weakling!
Lawrence gets up off the ground and Ronnie Watson prepares to punch Lawrence. But suddenly Victor Nyland strongly grabs Ronnie Watson's arm and stares into Ronnies eyes which are full of fear. Victor Nyland starts speaking in a serious tone.
Victor Nyland: I suggest you leave this man alone.
Ronnie Watson: Let me go, you bastard!
Victor Nyland: You are the one who is being the bastard here. You foolish ignorant boy.
Ronnie Watson: I will make you pay for this.
Victor Nyland: Listen kid I'm not afraid of hurting you or bashing your skull in. So I suggest you run along and leave this young man alone.
Victor Nyland lets go of Ronnie Watson's arm and Ronnie marches off in annoyance. Lawrence starts speaking in a slightly calmer tone.
Lawrence: Thank you, Victor.
Victor Nyland: Your welcome Lawrence.
Lawrence: Why are you here even?
Victor Nyland: I'm going to go hunt something. I see you have already killed something.
Lawrence: Yes I have.
Victor Nyland: Sometimes when your father decided to stay in Norway I would go hunting with him. Your father was a good hunter he rarely missed a shot. Although I prefer to use my axe or my blades to kill. It's quicker and you don't have to worry about running out of bullets.
Lawrence: I see.
Victor Nyland: Well, I'm sure that I will see you soon. I shall be off.
Lawrence: Yes Victor.
Victor Nyland calmly strolls off and Lawrence begins calmly walking back to the camp again. A few minutes later Lawrence gets to the camp and sits down on a log. Gently placing the rabbit down on the ground beside him he then grabs his watch out of his pocket.
Opening up the watch he notices that the time is 9:00 am. Suddenly he hears someone approaching him. Looking up he notices Voltaire approaching him with a smile on his face. Voltaire starts speaking in a cheerful tone.
Voltaire: Good Morning Lawrence.
Lawrence: Morning Voltaire.
Voltaire: Are you alright Lawrence?
Lawrence: Just thinking Voltaire...
Voltaire calmly sits down next to Lawrence. Then he starts speaking in a calm and pleasant voice.
Voltaire: What are you thinking about Lawrence?
Lawrence: My father...
Voltaire: I understand if you miss him.
Lawrence: I barely knew him, Voltaire. He died when I was only a child.
Voltaire: I see...
Lawrence: I don't know much about him other than he was a brave and caring man...He was also a great General. He also wasn't an Englishman. But other than that I don't know much about him.
Voltaire: How do you know that he wasn't an Englishman?
Lawrence: My cousin knows and my brother knows. Also, my father's rifle is definitely not the rifle used in the British Army.
Voltaire: Lawrence...
Lawrence: Yes Voltaire?
Voltaire: Your brother did something to me...Well, he didn't do it himself but he ordered these men to do it.
Lawrence: Voltaire what do you mean?
Voltaire: Your brother tried to get these men to kill me...He thought I was a French spy. He was threatening me.
Lawrence: Voltaire I'm sorry that this happened to you...
Voltaire: I wanted to tell you this earlier. But I have been scared to tell you...
Lawrence notices the tears forming in Voltaire's eyes. Then he gently puts his hand on Voltaire's shoulder. Voltaire starts speaking in a quiet and sad tone.
Voltaire: I thought that they wouldn't hurt me...I just wanted to be safe here.
Lawrence: I understand Voltaire...
Voltaire: I thought that my safety wouldn't be at risk. I thought that no one would want to hurt me...
Lawrence: Unfortunately Voltaire my brother prefers to harm the innocent. He likes to see them suffer. In some sort of cruel way, it pleases him.
Voltaire: How can someone get pleasure out of that!? That is honestly absurd and it sickens me!
Lawrence: I have been asking myself those questions for a while, Voltaire.
Voltaire: That is just as bad as the kind of people who enjoy watching people get punished or executed...
Lawrence: I understand how you feel Voltaire I don't really prefer to go to watch people get punished or executed.
Voltaire: I honestly couldn't believe how many people in France went to watch the execution of their King and Queen.
Lawrence: Most of them were probably supporters of the Revolution Voltaire.
Voltaire: Now there is this tyrant in charge of France. Who forced me to leave France and leave my family and friends behind...
Lawrence: Do you need to go calm down Voltaire?
Voltaire begins gently wiping his tears away and he starts speaking in a slightly calmer tone.
Voltaire: I'm going to go calm myself, Lawrence.
Lawrence: Alright Voltaire.
Voltaire calmly gets up and walks off leaving Lawrence alone on the log to think.
*Lawrence in thought*
How dare Ronnie hurt Voltaire...
Voltaire has already been through too much trauma and he doesn't need anymore.
I also don't understand why my brother would be so stupid enough to think he could hurt Voltaire and get away with it.
Also, I don't understand why my brother would accuse Voltaire of being some sort of spy.
Would any spy sit around and write poetry all day.
I also don't understand why Ronnie would choose to hurt Voltaire specifically.
I swear everything he does is stupid and pointless.
I guess I should go prepare to cook this rabbit.
Lawrence gently picks the rabbit up and gets up off the log. Then he calmly walks off to go and prepare to cook the rabbit. A couple of hours later Voltaire is peacefully sitting on the grassy hill cheerfully writing another page for his story.
Suddenly Voltaire hears footsteps approaching him along with a couple of snarky voices.
Ronnie Watson: Look who it is. It's the pathetic Frenchman who got me in trouble.
Voltaire: It serves you right to get in trouble.
Cameron Russell: I would watch your mouth you stupid Frenchman!
Voltaire: Just leave me alone I don't understand what I have done to you!
Ronnie Watson: You got me in trouble for almost killing you!
Voltaire: Honestly it was your stupidity that did that not me!
Voltaire gets up and prepares to walk away from them. But suddenly Cameron Russell quickly walks over to Voltaire and roughly shoves Voltaire down the hill. This causes Voltaire to tumble down the hill. Once Voltaire gets to the bottom of the hill he lies there feeling the pain flow through him.
He tries to remain conscious but the pain is too much for him and causes him to pass out. Meanwhile, at the top of the hill, Ronnie and Cameron prepare to walk back to their camp. But suddenly they hear someone marching up the hill along with an angry and commanding voice.
Prince Henry: I saw what you boys did now come here!
Ronnie Watson: Why should we listen to a Prussian.
Prince Henry: Come here immediately that is an order!
Cameron Russell: You aren't in charge of us so we shouldn't have to listen to you.
Prince Henry: I am the Prince of Prussia and the second in command of the Prussian Army! Now come here immediately that is an order!
Prince Henry suddenly hears someone approaching him along with a calm and slightly confused voice.
Wellington: Everything alright Your Highness?
Prince Henry stops walking up the hill and turns around and stares at Wellington. Prince Henry starts speaking in an irritated tone.
Prince Henry: No everything is not alright Your Grace. Those two men up there attacked an innocent civilian!
Wellington: I see...
Prince Henry: I suggest you deal with them or I will not hesitate to punish them myself.
Wellington: I shall deal with them, Your Highness...
Prince Henry: Good.
Wellington: Captain Watson and Lieutenant Russell back to the camp, please.
Ronnie Watson and Cameron Russell begin walking back to the camp feeling slightly frustrated. Wellington sighs and then he starts speaking in a calm and pleasant tone.
Wellington: I apologise for their behaviour...
Prince Henry: It's fine just make sure that it doesn't happen again...
Wellington: Yes Your Highness...
Prince Henry: Good day Your Grace...
Wellington: Good day Your Highness...
Wellington calmly strolls off and Prince Henry begins hastily climbing up the hill. A few minutes later he reaches the bottom of the hill and kneels down beside Voltaire. He gently shakes Voltaire to try to wake him. Prince Henry then gently picks Voltaire up and begins heading back to the Prussian camp.
A few minutes later Prince Henry enters Frederick and Voltaire's tent. He notices that Frederick isn't in the tent. Prince Henry walks over to the bed and gently places Voltaire on it and tucks him in with the blanket. Suddenly Prince Henry hears a concerned voice behind him.
Frederick: Henry...what happened to him?
Prince Henry: Two British soldiers pushed him down the hill.
Frederick: Is he alright do we need to get the doctor?
Prince Henry: I'm not sure Frederick all I can say is that he is currently unconscious. I'm not sure what kind of injuries he has sustained though.
Frederick suddenly violently slams his fist onto the desk. Prince Henry turns around and he notices the fiery rage in Frederick's eyes. Frederick starts speaking in an enraged tone.
Frederick: I thought that these people would have some sort of respect for civilians Henry!
Prince Henry: I did too Frederick...
Frederick: I am not afraid to unleash my wrath upon these disrespectful bastards that dare to harm Voltaire. I'm sure that you understand that very well Henry.
Prince Henry: Yes Frederick.
Frederick: Look I don't want to have guards following Voltaire around just to make sure he is safe. I know that would make him uncomfortable and make him think I'm being overprotective of him. I don't want that.
Prince Henry: I understand that Frederick...
Frederick: But if this gets worse I might have to do that. Look I want these bastards to know that they do not harm Voltaire without facing punishment!
Prince Henry: Again, I understand Frederick...
Frederick: I'm not going to go to a severe point of punishment where I would hang them all as my father would. I would just wish to see them be beaten. But not to the point of death of course. Just enough to make them suffer.
Prince Henry: Do you wish to go speak to the Duke about this incident Frederick?
Frederick: Not right now Henry. I want to continue with my work and be with Voltaire.
Prince Henry: I understand Frederick...I shall leave you to continue with your work.
Prince Henry calmly exits the tent and Frederick sits down at his desk. Frederick takes a deep breath trying to calm himself. Then he gently grabs his quill and begins doing his work. A couple of hours later Voltaire slowly opens his eyes. He notices that Frederick is calmly working at his desk. Voltaire starts speaking in a quiet and slightly upset voice.
Voltaire: Frederick...
Frederick: Yes?
Voltaire: I'm hurting and I'm scared...
Frederick gets out of his seat and calmly walks over to Voltaire. Kneeling down beside Voltaire Frederick then starts speaking in a calm and soothing voice.
Frederick: Why are you scared, Voltaire?
Voltaire: I'm scared that those two men might kill me...I don't understand what I have done wrong.
Frederick: Voltaire...My love, you have done nothing wrong.
Voltaire: But I feel like I have...
Frederick: You have done nothing wrong. Now, do you want me to get the doctor?
Voltaire: Yes...
Frederick: Alright, I shouldn't be too long.
Voltaire: Alright...
Frederick gets up and calmly leaves the tent. A few minutes later Frederick and Doctor Reinhart enter the tent. Doctor Reinhart starts speaking in a calm and pleasant tone.
Doctor Reinhart: Do you feel comfortable explaining to me what happened Voltaire?
Voltaire: These two British soldiers pushed me down a hill doctor...
Doctor Reinhart: I see. Does it hurt anywhere specific?
Voltaire: I feel like I'm hurting in many places, doctor...
Doctor Reinhart: I see. Well, I will check and see if there are any serious injuries.
Voltaire: Alright...
Doctor Reinhart calmly walks over to Voltaire. Kneeling down beside Voltaire he begins carefully checking him for serious injuries. A few minutes later Doctor Reinhart starts speaking in a calm tone.
Doctor Reinhart: Good news is that there are no serious injuries. Mostly just some bruising in places. But nothing serious.
Frederick: That is good news.
Doctor Reinhart: I'm assuming that you are well Your Majesty.
Frederick: Yes, I'm fine doctor.
Doctor Reinhart: Alright, I shall leave you. Remember that if you need help just come to me.
Frederick: Yes doctor.
Doctor Reinhart calmly exits the tent and Frederick walks over to Voltaire. Kneeling down beside Voltaire Frederick then begins passionately kissing him. A couple of minutes later Frederick gently breaks the kiss. He then starts speaking in a slightly cheerful voice.
Frederick: I'm glad that nothing serious happened to you, my love.
Voltaire: I'm also glad that nothing serious happened to me. But Frederick I'm still worried about my safety.
Frederick: I understand that Voltaire and I will try and sort something out...I just want them to stop hurting you, my love. I want you to be safe as you said.
Voltaire: Thank you for caring about my safety Frederick...
Frederick: I will always care about your safety my love. You mean a lot to me. I do not wish to lose you.
Voltaire: Thank you, my love.
Voltaire begins passionately kissing Frederick. A couple of minutes later Frederick gently breaks the kiss and smiles cheerfully at Voltaire. He then starts speaking in a calm and cheerful voice.
Frederick: I need to get back to my work now alright my love.
Voltaire: I understand my love.
Frederick gets up and calmly walks over to his desk. Sitting down at his desk Frederick begins calmly continuing with his work.
A few hours later Wellington is standing near the edge of the river. Which is flowing quite quickly due to the previous amount of heavy rainfall. Grabbing his golden pocket watch out of his pocket he gently opens it and notices that the time is 8:45 pm. Putting his pocket watch away he then takes a small sip of his tea.
Suddenly he hears the raven squawking at him from somewhere in the trees. Wellington quietly sighs to himself and he starts speaking in a slightly irritated tone.
Wellington: I don't have food for you. You mischievous bird. Just leave me alone also I'm sure you are very capable of getting your food.
The raven swoops down and carefully lands on Wellington's right shoulder.
Wellington: You are not having my tea if that's what you want. Now get off.
Wellington tries to shoo the raven away with his left hand. But the raven doesn't fly away instead it bites Wellington's hand quite hard. Wellington then starts yelling at the raven mostly out of annoyance but also out of pain.
Wellington: Let go of me you stupid bird!
The raven lets go and quickly flies off back into the trees above. Wellington stares at his left hand which is bleeding a little bit. But it's not serious. Wellington sighs out of frustration and he starts speaking in a slightly irritated tone.
Wellington: Stupid bird...thinking it's funny to hurt me and make me look ridiculous.
Wellington suddenly hears a calm but slightly confused voice behind him.
Victor Nyland: Are you alright?
Wellington: I'm fine...
Victor Nyland: Are you sure that you are alright. You were yelling at something.
Wellington: A stupid bird attacked me!
Victor Nyland: Maybe it wanted food. Or maybe you angered it.
Wellington: I don't know what it wanted...I'm just going to head back to my camp and get some work done.
Wellington begins calmly walking back to the British camp. A few minutes later Wellington reaches the British camp. Lord Uxbridge walks up to Wellington and notices the small cut on Wellington's hand. Lord Uxbridge starts speaking in a slightly concerned tone.
Lord Uxbridge: Are you alright sir? Your hand is bleeding.
Wellington: I'm fine Uxbridge...I was just attacked by that mischievous raven. I can assure you that it's nothing serious.
Lord Uxbridge: Alright sir.
Wellington: Now I'm going to go do my duties and I suggest you do the same.
Lord Uxbridge: Yes sir. But also, please sir don't stay up too late. You also need to rest and take care of yourself.
Wellington: I know Uxbridge...
Lord Uxbridge: You are still worried about Kitty aren't you?
Wellington: I care about her Uxbridge and honestly it can't be helped. This is what happens when you leave someone you love. You worry about them and you miss them.
Lord Uxbridge: I know sir. But I feel like you are worrying about her too much.
Wellington: Just let me go do my duties Uxbridge.
Lord Uxbridge: Yes sir. Sorry, sir.
Wellington calmly walks off to go do his duties. A few minutes later Wellington enters his tent and calmly sits down at his desk. Glancing at the letter for his brother Richard Wellington gently pushes it aside. He then grabs a paper from his pile of work and begins carefully reading it.
*Wellington in thought*
Why must Captain Watson cause so much trouble?
I don't want to have to deal with the Prussian King basically threatening me again.
Also, did Prince Henry really mean what he said?
Would he really dare to punish my men himself?
Or was he just being threatening?
I doubt that Prince Henry would do that. Because he would probably get in trouble with the King.
But at the same time, I'm questioning if it was just a threat or not.
Just focus on your work Arthur. You can think about this issue later and sort it out later.
Wellington continues calmly reading the important papers in front of him. A few hours later it is now 11:50 pm and Frederick is lying in bed awake. While Voltaire is peacefully sleeping beside Frederick.
*Frederick in thought*
I can't believe that they hurt Voltaire again!
I don't really want to give Voltaire an escort...Because then he would see me as being extremely overprotective. It would also make him uncomfortable having people following him around.
I don't want to make him uncomfortable. But at the same time, I worry for his safety.
He means a lot to me.
I love him dearly and I want him to be safe and well.
I don't know what I would do if I lost Voltaire. I would probably be broken again...
I don't want to be like that again...
I should sleep. It is late. I have worked a lot.
Frederick slowly closes his eyes and he enters his fantasies. Opening his eyes he notices that he is sitting on a log in front of a campfire which is starting to glow in the dimming sunlight. Glancing out at the vast grassy plain in front of him he stares at the sunset which is a mixture of fiery reds, oranges and yellows. Then he hears some nearby gunshots and notices that two riflemen are doing some target practice on some targets that have been set up.
Suddenly the two men start walking back to the camp and begin having a cheerful conversation.
Alexander: Nice work Major Arvin Koeppel your shooting skills are definitely improving greatly.
Arvin: Thank you, sir.
Alexander: If you do ever need assistance with your shooting skills don't be afraid to ask.
Arvin: Yes sir.
Alexander: I'm sure that someday you will make an excellent General.
Arvin: Really sir you really think that about someone like me.
Alexander: You have the skill and the potential to be an excellent General.
Arvin: Thank you, sir.
Alexander: Now I suggest you head back to your tent Major.
Arvin: Yes sir.
Arvin calmly strolls off and Alexander calmly walks over to Frederick and sits down beside him. Alexander starts speaking in a calm and pleasant tone.
Alexander: How is His Majesty feeling on this calm night?
Frederick: I could be better Alexander.
Alexander: Something wrong?
Frederick: Just worried about the battle ahead. My younger brother Prince Augustus has been wanting me to visit my dear nephew. I'm just worried that I might get killed before I get to see the boy.
Alexander: I understand Your Majesty. I know how you feel. I also sometimes worry that I might not return home to see my boy.
Frederick: You will return home to your boy Alexander...You are a great General and a great leader. You are also very loyal to me and my kingdom and I'm assuming that you are also loyal to your family.
Alexander: I will always be loyal to you Your Majesty and the Kingdom of Prussia. I am also loyal to my family. I will always protect them.
Frederick: I will always remember you for your loyalty Alexander.
Alexander: Well, I shall be heading off Your Majesty. Good night.
Frederick: Good night Alexander.
Alexander gets up and calmly walks off. Frederick slowly wakes up and slowly opens his eyes allowing them to adjust to the bright morning light. Frederick gently grabs his pocket watch out of his pocket. Opening the pocket watch he notices that the time is 5:30 am. Putting his pocket watch back in his pocket he then gently closes his eyes and goes back to sleep.
