He is Worthy

It's currently 8:30 and Wellington is calmly working at his desk. A couple of minutes later, Lord Uxbridge enters the tent. Wellington looks up from his desk and cheerfully smiles at Uxbridge. Wellington then starts speaking in a cheerful tone.

Wellington: Uxbridge you are just the one I have been needing to talk to.
Lord Uxbridge: What do you need to tell me, sir?
Wellington: I need you to get Lieutenant Sundermann for me. I need to tell him something important.
Lord Uxbridge: Yes sir, I shall do that.

Lord Uxbridge calmly exits the tent and begins walking towards the Prussian camp. Meanwhile, in the Prussian camp, Lawrence is peacefully sleeping in his tent. A few minutes later Lord Uxbridge enters Lawrence's tent. Lawrence slowly opens his eyes and awkwardly stares at Lord Uxbridge. Lord Uxbridge starts speaking in a calm yet serious voice.

Lord Uxbridge: Lieutenant Sundermann his Lordship wants to speak with you.
Lawrence: Am I in trouble sir?
Lord Uxbridge: No Lieutenant you are not in trouble at all.
Lawrence: Alright sir.

Lord Uxbridge calmly exits the tent and Lawrence gets out of bed. He then grabs his jet black boots and puts them on. Then he grabs his green jacket and puts it on and carefully buttons it up. Lawrence then exits the tent and starts hastily following Lord Uxbridge to the British camp. A few minutes later they stop outside Wellington's tent and Lord Uxbridge smiles a little then gestures to Lawrence to enter. Lawrence calmly and confidently enters the tent. Wellington looks up from his work and smiles at Lawrence. Wellington starts speaking in a calm yet slightly serious voice.

Wellington: Good to see you, Lieutenant.
Lawrence: You wanted to speak to me, sir.
Wellington: Yes, I do Lieutenant. A few days ago you saved my life.
Lawrence: Yes sir.
Wellington: I thank you again for that. You have been rewarded for saving my life Lieutenant.
Lawrence: What do you mean sir?

Wellington: I have a letter from Horse Guards Lieutenant. They have rewarded you with the rank of Captain for saving my life. You are now Captain Sundermann of the 95th.
Lawrence: Yes sir.
Wellington: You are dismissed, Captain. Good day.
Lawrence: Good day to you too sir.

Lawrence calmly exits the tent and begins cheerfully strolling back to the Prussian camp. A few minutes later he reaches the Prussian camp. He then notices Frederick sitting on a log staring at his reflection in his sabre. Lawrence calmly approaches Frederick who looks up at him and smiles. Frederick starts speaking in a calm yet slightly cheerful voice.

Frederick: Come sit down Lawrence. I can tell that you wish to speak to me.
Lawrence: Yes Your Majesty.

Lawrence calmly sits down beside Frederick. Frederick carefully puts his sabre away. Then he continues speaking in a can and slightly cheerful voice.

Frederick: On this day 27 years ago I became the King of a strong kingdom that I have sworn to protect. Even if it means I must risk my own life. I did question my worthiness of being a ruler. You are still questioning if you are worthy to wield your father's sabre. But I can tell that something has happened that has pleased you.
Lawrence: I was rewarded for saving Lord Wellington's life, Your Majesty.
Frederick: What were you rewarded with?
Lawrence: I was rewarded with the rank of Captain Your Majesty.
Frederick: That's great news, Lawrence. I congratulate you on that.

Lawrence: I am still questioning if I am worthy of wielding my father's sabre.
Frederick: You are Lawrence. You are worthy I see it in you. I also see a spark of confidence in you.
Lawrence: I still don't think that I am worthy.
Frederick: You will find it, Lawrence. I believe that. You are just like your father. You have his confidence, bravery, intelligence, and strength. Keep searching Lawrence. I shall go do my duties now.
Lawrence: Yes Your Majesty.

Frederick gets up and calmly walks off leaving Lawrence sitting on the log alone. Lawrence then carefully grabs his pocket watch out of his pocket. He then gently opens it and stares at the picture of his father.

*Lawrence in thought*
Am I really worthy of your sword father?

I just feel like it's something that I'm not meant to be wielding. Your sword has been through many battles and I feel like it's almost time to put it to rest.

But maybe just one last time it will be used in battle.

Just one last time.

I promise that I will make you proud father. I know that you are watching me.

Lawrence gently closes his pocket watch then he gets up and calmly and confidently walks off to his tent. Once he reaches his tent he enters it and stares at his father's sabre which is lying beside his bed. He then walks over to his bed and carefully picks up his father's sabre. Then he stares at his reflection in the sabre. A couple of minutes later he puts the sabre into his sheath. Then he exits his tent and starts confidently walking around the Prussian camp. A few minutes later he reaches a nearby hill where he notices Victor Nyland gazing at the nearby town.

Lawrence stands beside Victor who eventually notices him and smiles cheerfully at him. He then notices that Lawrence has the sabre in his sheath. Victor Nyland starts speaking in a calm yet slightly cheerful voice.

Victor Nyland: I see that you have your father's sabre with you.
Lawrence: Yes Victor.
Victor Nyland: Have you realized that you are worthy to wield it?
Lawrence: I know that it's going to need to be used one last time in battle.
Victor Nyland: If your father was still alive he would be proud of you for wielding his sabre. As he would have wanted you to have it. You are worthy of wielding it.

Lawrence: Yes Victor.
Victor Nyland: You have had a lot of practice. But I feel like you are now ready to use a sabre. Let's practice, shall we?
Lawrence: Yes Victor.

Victor suddenly draws a sabre from a sheath on his belt. Lawrence starts speaking in a slightly confused tone.

Lawrence: Where did you get that from Victor?
Victor Nyland: I got it from a French bastard a few days ago. Even though it is not of much use to me as I have a better weapon. But I shall use it to practice with you.
Lawrence: Alright.

Lawrence calmly and confidently draws his sabre. Victor Nyland smiles as he notices the confidence in Lawrence's eyes. Victor Nyland starts speaking in a calm voice.

Victor Nyland: You are confident that's good. It's good to be confident in a fight. But don't be too confident as overconfidence can cause you to make mistakes.
Lawrence: Alright.
Victor Nyland: I want you to defend yourself.
Lawrence: Yes Victor.

Lawrence gets into a defensive stance and Victor Nyland prepares to attack. Victor then swings his sabre from right to left and Lawrence immediately blocks the attack. Victor then lifts his sabre and then swiftly swings it downwards. Lawrence hastily blocks the attack. Victor then swings his sabre from left to right and Lawrence blocks the attack. Lawrence then manages to knock the sabre out of Victor's hand and sends it flying off to the side. Victor Nyland smiles and starts speaking in a calm yet slightly cheerful voice.

Victor Nyland: Well done Lawrence. You have improved greatly in defending yourself.
Lawrence: Thank you, Victor.
Victor Nyland: Now I want to see if your attacking skills have improved.
Lawrence: Yes Victor.

Victor Nyland picks up his sabre and then he gets into a defensive stance. While Lawrence prepares to attack. Lawrence swiftly swings his sabre from right to left and Victor confidently blocks the attack. Lawrence then raises his sabre and swings it downwards and Victor blocks the attack. Lawrence then swings his sabre from left to right and Victor blocks the attack. Lawrence then manages to knock the sabre out of Victor's hand. Victor smiles a little bit then he picks up the sabre and puts it in the sheath. Lawrence then puts his sabre back in his sheath and Victor gently puts his hand on Lawrence's shoulder. Victor then starts speaking in a calm yet slightly serious voice.

Victor Nyland: You are worthy Lawrence. I'm sure that you will use that sabre well in battle just like your father did.
Lawrence: Yes Victor.
Victor Nyland: Go take a break, Lawrence. You deserve it.
Lawrence: Yes Victor.

Lawrence begins calmly and confidently walking back to the Prussian camp. Meanwhile, on the outskirts of the Prussian camp, Frederick is calmly gazing out at the nearby village. He then hears footsteps behind him then he turns around and notices Prince Frederick. Frederick awkwardly stares at the Prince then a couple of minutes later he starts speaking in a calm yet slightly awkward tone.

Frederick: Fred is something wrong? We haven't spoken in a while and it seems you have been avoiding me.
Prince Frederick: I just don't like having to be under someone elses command.
Frederick: Fred you know that you are not ready to command an army on your own.
Prince Frederick: I am ready! I have been preparing for this moment for a while and you just put me under someone else's command!
Frederick: You haven't had enough experience yet Fred.

Prince Frederick: If I was under my father's command I would be his second in command! But you just put me under someone else! Am I not worthy of commanding some of your army!?
Frederick: Fred stop.
Prince Frederick: You don't see me as worthy! I am meant to be your heir to the throne and you have someone else commanding me! Giving me orders!
Frederick: Frederick Augustus William I just want to have a more civil conversation!

Prince Frederick goes to walk away but Frederick gently grabs his hand. Frederick quietly sighs to himself and then he starts speaking in a calm voice.

Frederick: Fred, please I do want to talk to you. I have been needing to talk to you.
Prince Frederick: You really want to talk to me? I thought you would want to talk to someone else rather than me. Like Voltaire or Uncle Henry. Every time I want to talk you are always busy!
Frederick: Fred I'm sorry. But that's what happens when you are ruling a kingdom.

Frederick lets go of Prince Frederick's hand and Prince Frederick turns around and goes to slap Frederick. But Frederick firmly grabs Prince Frederick's arm. Prince Frederick starts speaking in an enraged voice.

Prince Frederick: You always have time for everyone else but me!
Frederick: Fred. I'm sorry that I don't really have time for you. But I do want to talk to you this time.
Prince Frederick: Dont lie to me!
Frederick: Fred I'm not lying to you!

Prince Frederick suddenly shoves Frederick backward. Causing Frederick to stumble backwards and land on the ground. Prince Frederick then angrily marches off back to the camp. Frederick awkwardly stares at the sky and sighs to himself out of slight frustration.

*Frederick in thought*
Am I a bad father?

I feel like I'm becoming like my father. And not caring enough for Fred.

I just want him to love me like a father. I don't want him to hate me.

Maybe I wasn't meant to be his father. I should have asked Wilhelmine to take care of him with her husband instead of me taking care of him.

I'm King after all. I just don't have much time to take care of Fred. I don't understand why Augustus chose me.

How am I going to repair this relationship with him?

Frederick starts to feel tears stream down his face. He then sits up and puts his face in his hands and starts to quietly sob. A couple of minutes later Frederick hears footsteps coming towards him. He then takes his hands off his face and looks up at Voltaire. Voltaire calmly sits down beside Frederick and gently puts his hand on his shoulder. Voltaire starts speaking in a calm yet comforting voice.

Voltaire: My love what's wrong?
Frederick: I just had an argument with Fred. He still hates me and I doubt that he will love me again.
Voltaire: I'm sure that he wouldn't hate you forever Frederick my love.
Frederick: I shouldn't have been the one to take care of him. It should have been someone else.
Voltaire: Frederick. Fred needed a father your brother trusted you with taking care of his son. You see him as your child. Your son.

Frederick: Your right Voltaire. He needed a father.
Voltaire: Family arguments are normal Frederick. They can be resolved but it takes time.
Frederick: What if it never gets resolved, Voltaire? What if he never loves me again Voltaire?
Voltaire: Frederick you can resolve this I know you can. I'm also sure that Fred will love you again.
Frederick: Are you really sure about that my dear?
Voltaire: Yes my love.

Voltaire starts passionately kissing Frederick on the lips. Frederick then gently grips onto Voltaire's shoulders. He then lies down on the soft grass and gently pulls Voltaire closer to him. A couple of minutes later Frederick gently breaks the kiss. He cheerfully smiles and stares into Voltaire's eyes. Frederick then starts speaking in a calm yet slightly cheerful voice.

Frederick: I thank you so much, Voltaire my love.
Voltaire: I'm always here for you Frederick.
Frederick: I will also always be here for you my dear Voltaire.
Voltaire: I'm sure that you will find a way to resolve your friendship with Fred. I believe in you, my dear.
Frederick: Thank you, Voltaire. I shall go do my duties now.
Voltaire: Alright.

Voltaire carefully gets up off of Frederick then he stands up and politely holds out his hand to Frederick.  Frederick then gently grabs Voltaire's hand and Voltaire helps Frederick up. Voltaire then gently kisses Frederick on the cheek. Frederick then starts walking back to the Prussian camp. A few minutes later Frederick reaches his tent and calmly enters it. He then sits down at his desk and begins writing something. A couple of minutes later Prince Henry enters the tent Frederick then stops writing and looks up from his work. Frederick starts speaking in a calm yet serious voice.

Frederick: What is it, Henry?
Prince Henry: Frederick I saw what Fred did to you. He is still angry at you even though it's been a while since the whole incident.
Frederick: Yes, I know Henry. I just don't know what to do about it.
Prince Henry: Frederick I'm sure that you will figure out what to do. You are quite intelligent my dear brother.
Frederick: Henry can I ask you something?

Prince Henry: Yes Frederick.
Frederick: Do you think that I have been a good father for Fred?
Prince Henry: You are doubting yourself aren't you Frederick?
Frederick: He hates me still Henry and he has been avoiding me for the whole journey. I just want to know what I have done wrong!
Prince Henry: Frederick you have been a good father for Fred.

Prince Henry then notices that tears are slowly streaming down Frederick's face. Prince Henry calmly strolls over to Frederick and gently puts his hand on Frederick's shoulder. Then he starts speaking in a calm and slightly comforting voice.

Prince Henry: Frederick you are the father Fred needed so he can learn to rule the kingdom.
Frederick: He hurt me. He hates me. He also tried to kill me. I don't feel like I should have been the one to look after him.
Prince Henry: Augustus trusted you with taking care of his son. He knew that you could take care of Fred.
Frederick: I don't think I was his best choice for taking care of Fred. I don't think I'm worthy of taking care of him anymore!

Prince Henry sighs to himself out of slight frustration. Then he starts speaking in a calm yet slightly serious tone.

Prince Henry: Frederick you have no son of your own. You don't have an heir! Fred is the next one in line. You have to teach him how to rule. You can't give up on him.
Frederick: I'm worried that he will hate me forever. I'm worried that I can't resolve this problem.
Prince Henry: Frederick you can't give up on him! If you give up on him Prussia will fall when you are gone!
Frederick: I know that Henry!
Prince Henry: You can't give up on Fred. I'm sure that deep down he still loves you.

Frederick: Are you sure about that Henry?
Prince Henry: Yes Fritz.
Frederick: Thank you for giving me some well needed advice Henry.
Prince Henry: I will always believe in you Frederick and I will always be here to give you some advice. I shall go continue with my duties now Frederick.
Frederick: Yes and I thank you again, Henry.

Prince Henry calmly exits the tent and Frederick begins writing something. A few minutes later Voltaire enters the tent and he notices that Frederick has been crying. He then starts speaking in a calm yet slightly concerned voice.

Voltaire: Frederick are you alright?
Frederick: I'm alright Voltaire I just had to let my emotions out. Henry also gave me some well needed advice.
Voltaire: Frederick don't forget to take a break and have something to eat. I know what you are like when you are upset and worried.
Frederick: I won't Voltaire I promise.
Voltaire: Good my dear Frederick.

Voltaire calmly walks over to his bed and sits down on it. He then grabs a sheet of paper and quill and begins cheerfully writing another page for his story. A few hours later the sun has now set and Voltaire is calmly lying in bed staring at Frederick who is finishing up his work.

Frederick gently puts his quill down and then begins carefully taking his boots off. He then puts his boots under his desk and then he gets up and begins unbuttoning his coat. Once he unbuttons his coat he then puts it on the back of his wooden seat. Then he calmly walks over to his bed and lies down beside Voltaire. Frederick then starts speaking in a calm yet slightly cheerful voice.

Frederick: Good night Voltaire my love.
Voltaire: Good night my dear Frederick.

Voltaire gently kisses Frederick on the cheek then he closes his eyes and enters a deep and peaceful sleep. Frederick gently grabs Voltaire's hand and then slowly closes his eyes and enters his fantasies. Upon opening his eyes he notices that he is in his palace in Potsdam. He calmly walks over to the window and stares at the gardens which are full of roses that are in full bloom. Suddenly he feels a gentle tug on his coat. He then looks down and notices a small boy with blue eyes and short, straight black hair. Frederick smiles cheerfully and starts speaking in a cheerful voice.

Frederick: Fred my dear boy what is it?
Prince Frederick: I'm bored uncle Frederick.
Frederick: I see. Well, let's go outside it's a nice day after all.
Prince Frederick: Alright.

Frederick and Prince Frederick both begin cheerfully walking down the hallway together. Eventually, they reach the stairs, and Prince Frederick stops and awkwardly looks down the stairs. Frederick notices this and holds his hand to Prince Frederick who gently grabs Frederick's hand. Frederick starts speaking in a calm voice.

Frederick: It's alright I won't let you fall, Fred. Now, remember what I told you?
Prince Frederick: Yes uncle Frederick.
Frederick: One after the other. We can take it slow if you want. I'm not going to rush you.
Prince Frederick: Alright.

They both begin carefully walking down the stairs together. Once they get to the tenth step Prince Frederick almost falls down the stairs. But Frederick stops him and gently picks him up and starts speaking in a cheerful voice.

Frederick: See I told you that I wouldn't let you fall. You did well Fred you made it halfway.
Prince Frederick: I want to play.
Frederick: We can play outside Fred.
Prince Frederick: Alright.
Frederick: I don't want you getting lost in the palace after all.
Prince Frederick: I wouldn't get lost uncle.
Frederick: I had to spend an hour trying to find you yesterday.
Prince Frederick: Thats because I'm the best at hiding.

Frederick starts carefully walking down the stairs again while holding onto Prince Frederick. After walking down a couple of hallways Frederick reaches the entrance to the gardens. He then opens the door and walks outside and feels the warmth of the afternoon sun's rays. Then he carefully puts Prince Frederick down and cheerfully smiles at him. He then starts speaking in a cheerful voice.

Frederick: What do you want to play Fred?
Prince Frederick: I want to play hide and seek.
Frederick: Alright you go hide Fred.
Prince Frederick: I don't think you will be able to find me!

Frederick turns around and Prince Frederick quickly sprints off. After a couple of minutes, Frederick begins searching around the gardens. Eventually, he finds Prince Frederick hiding behind a small statue. Prince Frederick starts giggling and Frederick gently picks him up and gently hugs him. He then starts speaking in a cheerful voice

Frederick: I found you, Fred.
Prince Frederick: If I was inside I bet you wouldn't have found me.
Frederick: I know that. But I don't want you to get lost, my dear boy.
Prince Frederick: But I wouldn't get lost. I know my way around.
Frederick: I will show you around the palace someday. So you don't get lost.
Prince Frederick: But I don't get lost.

Frederick: Now let's start heading back inside I have things to do Fred.
Prince Frederick: But uncle Frederick I want to play outside some more.
Frederick: Unfortunately, I have things to do Fred. Things that need to be done. I promise you that we can play more hide and seek later. But you can play with your toys while I do my work.
Prince Frederick: Fine.

Frederick begins walking back to the palace while still gently holding Prince Frederick in his arms. Frederick then wakes up and slowly opens his eyes noticing that it's still dark outside. He then gently grabs his golden pocket watch and opens it up and notices that it is 2:40. Gently closing the pocket watch he puts it back in his pocket.

*Frederick in thought*
He loved me so much back then. But I don't understand what I have done wrong.

Why does he hate me? What have I done wrong to deserve this? I don't understand.

My dear boy, what have I done wrong?

I cared and loved him as much as I could. Did I not give him enough love? Is that why he doesn't like me?

I don't know what I could have done wrong. I gave him love. I cared for him like he was my own child.

I feel like I am a bad father.

Frederick calmly sits up and begins to quietly cry. A couple of minutes later Voltaire slowly opens his eyes and notices Frederick crying. He then starts speaking in a soft and comforting voice.

Voltaire: Frederick what's wrong?
Frederick: I'm sorry for waking you, Voltaire.
Voltaire: Did something happen?
Frederick: I just had a dream, Voltaire.
Voltaire: Was it a bad one?
Frederick: No it wasn't a bad one. It just reminded me of something.

Voltaire: Do you want to talk about it?
Frederick: No I don't.
Voltaire: I understand Frederick. Do you want to go back to sleep then?
Frederick: Yes Voltaire.

Frederick stops crying and lies back down. Voltaire gently grabs Frederick's hand and smiles at him. Frederick smiles back at Voltaire and then he gently kisses Voltaire on the cheek. They both then slowly close their eyes and enter a deep and peaceful sleep.
