A Toxic and Deadly Plot (Part 2)

The sun has just risen and Wellington slowly opens his eyes allowing them to adjust to the morning light. Glancing over next to him he notices that Kitty is still peacefully sleeping. Gently grabbing his golden pocket watch out of his pocket he then opens it and notices that it's 5:50.

He attempts to get out of bed without disturbing Kitty. But Kitty notices him getting out of bed and she opens her eyes and smiles cheerfully. Then she starts speaking in a cheerful yet slightly tired voice.

Kitty Wellesley: Good morning my love.
Wellington: Good morning my dear.

Wellington calmly walks over to his desk and grabs his coat and gently puts it on. Then he sits down at his desk and grabs his jet black boots and carefully puts them on. Suddenly he notices the half empty glass of vodka that he left on his desk last night.

Carefully picking up the glass and he drinks the last of the vodka. But suddenly he starts to feel dizzy and his vision starts to blur. Wellington starts to speak in a slightly anxious voice.

Wellington: Kitty...
Kitty Wellesley: Yes Arthur?
Wellington: I don't feel well at all something isn't right...
Kitty Wellesley: What's wrong Arthur?
Wellington: I feel dizzy...

Kitty Wellesley: Do you want to lie down Arthur? That might help.
Wellington: Yes your right maybe I should lie down...

Wellington carefully gets up from his seat and starts to walk over to his bed. But suddenly he collapses onto the ground and loses conciseness. Kitty immediately gets out of bed and rushes over to him.

Then she starts to gently shake him trying to wake him. She also starts yelling out of panic.

Kitty Wellesley: Arthur please wake up!
Kitty Wellesley: Arthur, please I love you!
Kitty Wellesley: Please don't die on me, Arthur!

Lord Uxbridge enters the tent and he stops and stares out of shock. Kitty Wellesley stares at Lord Uxbridge with tears forming in her eyes. Lord Uxbridge starts speaking in a shocked tone.

Lord Uxbridge: My Lady is he alright? Is he still alive?
Kitty Wellesley: Yes but something is wrong with him!
Lord Uxbridge: What happened?
Kitty Wellesley: I don't know he decided to finish the last of his drink. Then he said he wasn't feeling well. He tried to come back to bed but he collapsed. I don't know what's wrong with him.

Suddenly Lieutenant General Carrington enters the tent while drinking a cup of tea. When he notices Wellington on the ground he drops his cup of tea out of shock.

Lord Uxbridge and Kitty Wellesley awkwardly stare and Winston Carrington. Lord Uxbridge sighs and he starts speaking in a calm and serious voice.

Lord Uxbridge: Lieutenant General Carrington why are you here?
Winston Carrington: I was going to give some reports to Lord Wellington sir.
Lord Uxbridge: Perhaps you can do that later Lieutenant General Carrington. We have a problem on our hands.
Winston Carrington: I see that sir.

Kitty Wellesley: Lord Uxbridge do you know what's wrong with him!?
Lord Uxbridge: I don't want to concern you, My Lady. But I have a feeling that he has been poisoned. But I don't know who did it. The scouts didn't see anyone suspicious last night.
Kitty Wellesley: Will he live Lord Uxbridge!? I don't want to lose my husband!
Lord Uxbridge: Yes he will live don't worry. The poison must have lost its potency and it won't kill him. He just needs rest.

Lieutenant General Carrington regains his composure and he starts speaking in a calm voice.

Winston Carrington: Should I go get the doctor?
Lord Uxbridge: Yes that's a good idea Lieutenant General Carrington.
Winston Carrington: I shall go do that sir.
Lord Uxbridge: Good.

Lieutenant General Carrington calmly exits the tent and Lord Uxbridge walks over to Kitty Wellesley. Kitty Wellesley starts speaking in an anxious voice.

Kitty Wellesley: Who could have poisoned him?
Lord Uxbridge: I don't know who could have done this. The scouts didn't notice anyone suspicious last night as I said.
Kitty Wellesley: Why would someone do this to him?
Lord Uxbridge: It's one of the dangers of leading an Army that people want you dead. You are most likely to be targeted by your enemies.

Kitty Wellesley carefully picks Wellington up and then puts him on the bed. Winston Carrington and Doctor Cullimore both enter the tent. Doctor Cullimore starts speaking in a calm and serious voice.

Doctor Cullimore: What happened to him?
Lord Uxbridge: We think he has been poisoned by someone.
Doctor Cullimore: I see that's not good. I shall check on him.
Lord Uxbridge: Alright.

Doctor Cullimore calmly walks over to Wellington and kneels down next to him. After a couple of minutes of checking him out, he starts speaking in a calm and serious voice.

Doctor Cullimore: Well, it seems that the poison that was used has lost its potency. It has just made him quite ill. He has a low fever due to the poison but it should be gone once the effects of the poison have worn off. So don't worry it won't kill him.
Kitty Wellesley: I'm glad that he will be alright. Because I don't want to lose my dear husband.
Doctor Cullimore: Although I'm unsure when he will wake up.
Kitty Wellesley: Im worried about him, doctor.

Doctor Cullimore: I understand that My Lady. But he will be alright it won't kill him as I said.
Kitty Wellesley: I just want him to wake up.
Doctor Cullimore: He will wake up. Im just not sure when. But when he does wake up he will need rest.
Kitty Wellesley: Alright doctor.
Doctor Cullimore: He will be alright I promise.

Doctor Cullimore calmly leaves the tent and Lieutenant General Carrington continues nervously staring. Lord Uxbridge starts speaking in a calm and serious voice.

Lord Uxbridge: Lieutenant General Carrington.
Winston Carrington: Yes sir?
Lord Uxbridge: Send out some scouts and make sure that the French aren't lurking around. If you see the traitor make sure that you capture him.
Winston Carrington: Yes sir.

Winston Carrington calmly exits the tent and Kitty Wellesley starts speaking in a slightly concerned voice.

Kitty Wellesley: You are assuming that the French did this?
Lord Uxbridge: Sir Arthur's brother General Henry Wellesley is with the French. He's also been around this French General. So it is a definite possibility that the French did this.
Kitty Wellesley: I don't understand why Henry wants to kill my husband.
Lord Uxbridge: He won't kill him.

Kitty Wellesley: I'm concerned about my safety as well as his safety.
Lord Uxbridge: Nothing will happen to you. You are safe here. Besides Sir Arthur wouldn't allow anyone to harm you. I will try and get some more patrols set up.
Kitty Wellesley: I'm glad that I will be safe here.
Lord Uxbridge: I shall be going I have important things to do. But I promise you that Sir Arthur will be alright.

Lord Uxbridge calmly exits the tent while Kitty Wellesley stays knelt down beside Wellington. She begins to gently stroke his hair to possibly try to wake him up. Kitty Wellesley starts speaking in a concerned voice.

Kitty Wellesley: Arthur please wake up. I want you to be alright.

Meanwhile, in the French camp, Joseph Ney is calmly working at his desk. While Henry Wellesley is carefully sharpening his sabre. Henry Wellesley starts speaking in a calm voice.

Henry Wellesley: Did your father punish you?
Joseph Ney: No. He just warned me.
Henry Wellesley: I thought he would have punished you for disobeying his orders.
Joseph Ney: I was expecting that as well.

Henry Wellesley: Does he normally just let you off with a warning?
Joseph Ney: Rarely. Also, I suggest you focus on sharpening your sabre instead of talking to me. Unless you want to lose a finger.
Henry Wellesley: Your right. I don't really want to lose a finger.

Suddenly a few minutes later Marshal Ney enters the tent. Joseph Ney notices this and he awkwardly stares at his father. Joseph Ney starts speaking in a calm voice.

Joseph Ney: What is it, father?
Marshal Ney: Don't run off like that again Joseph. I don't like it when you disobey my orders.
Joseph Ney: Did you really just come here to remind me?
Marshal Ney: Yes I'm making sure you remember to not disobey me.

Joseph Ney: I understand that father.
Marshal Ney: You also better not run off either Englishman.
Henry Wellesley: I won't sir.
Marshal Ney: Good. Because remember if you do run off I'm not afraid to order people to find you and kill you.
Henry Wellesley: I understand that sir.

Marshal Ney calmly leaves the tent and Henry Wellesley finishes sharpening his sabre and puts it into his sheath. Then he starts speaking in an uncomfortable tone.

Henry Wellesley: Would he really send people to kill me if I run off?
Joseph Ney: Yes. Although the English probably would find you first and execute you.
Henry Wellesley: I'm not really keen on being hunted by both sides of this war. Dealing with my brother's Army and his stupid mercenaries is enough.
Joseph Ney: Just don't anger my father as I told you and he won't get you punished.

Henry Wellesley: How would he punish me exactly?
Joseph Ney: Probably some sort of humiliation. You would be flogged most likely.
Henry Wellesley: Oh how joyful. I've already had to deal with that once in the past few days.
Joseph Ney: I forgot that your brother had you flogged.
Henry Wellesley: It was bloody humiliating.

Joseph Ney quietly sighs to himself and he starts speaking in an awkward voice.

Joseph Ney: I understand what you mean Henry.
Henry Wellesley: Have you been flogged before Joseph?
Joseph Ney: Yes only a few times. Mostly for disobeying orders. I am reckless. But being reckless is fun in a way.
Henry Wellesley: I haven't really been that reckless before.

Joseph Ney: Sometimes in war, you do have to take some risks.
Henry Wellesley: Thats true.
Joseph Ney: Now I'm going to continue with my work.
Henry Wellesley: Alright Joseph.

A few hours later at the British camp, Kitty is still beside Wellington waiting for him to wake up. She gently kisses him on the cheek. Then she starts speaking in a calm voice that has a hint of sadness to it.

Kitty Wellesley: Please Arthur. Wake up I want you to be alright.

Kitty Wellesley gently shakes him to try and get him to wake up. A few minutes later Wellington starts to wake up. Upon opening his eyes he notices Kitty staring at him with tears forming in her eyes.

Kitty Wellesley starts to smile and also cry noticing that Wellington is awake. Then she starts speaking in a cheerful voice.

Kitty Wellesley: I'm glad that you are alright. I thought I had lost you.
Wellington: I still don't feel the best. I still feel awful.
Kitty Wellesley: The doctor told me that you need to rest. Also, do you want something to eat?
Wellington: I'm not well enough to eat. Maybe later perhaps when I'm feeling a bit better.

Kitty Wellesley: Alright, I understand Arthur.
Wellington: Does Uxbridge know about my situation?
Kitty Wellesley: Yes along with Lieutenant General Carrington.
Wellington: What does Lieutenant General Carrington want?
Kitty Wellesley: He wanted to give you these reports.

Wellington quietly sighs to himself and he then starts speaking in a calm voice.

Wellington: Of course he did. I have a lot of work to do.
Kitty Wellesley: No Arthur you need to rest.
Wellington: I understand Kitty. But please give me something to read off my desk. I'm not going to lie around and do nothing.
Kitty Wellesley: Alright Arthur.

Kitty Wellesley calmly walks over to Wellington's desk and she grabs five papers. She then shows the papers to Wellington and she starts speaking in a calm voice.

Kitty Wellesley: Is this enough Arthur?
Wellington: Yes that's enough. At least I will have something to do.

Kitty Wellesley gently hands Wellington the papers. Wellington notices the concern on Kitty's face as she hands him the papers. Then he starts speaking in a calm voice.

Wellington: What's wrong my dear?
Kitty Wellesley: I'm worried about who did this to you.
Wellington: I have a feeling that Henry did this. I doubt that a random French soldier would do it.
Kitty Wellesley: He won't target me would he?

Wellington: Kitty I won't allow him to harm you.
Kitty Wellesley: I'm still worried that he might target me.
Wellington: Kitty I promise that I will protect you. I won't allow Henry to hurt you.

Wellington puts his papers down beside him. Then he slowly and carefully gets to his feet and gently embraces Kitty. Kitty gently kisses Wellington on the lips. They then start speaking to each other in a romantic voice.

Wellington: I have always loved you. Even though we weren't able to be together the first time.
Kitty Wellesley: Arthur after that day I had a feeling that you would return to me. I knew that you wouldn't give up on me.
Wellington: I love you as much as we first met. I would never let anyone hurt you. I will always protect you even if it means me risking my life for your safety.

Kitty Wellesley starts passionately kissing Wellington on the lips. Wellington suddenly softly falls onto the while still gently embracing Kitty. Causing Kitty to gently fall on him.

Then she gently breaks the kiss and stares at him. Wellington smiles cheerfully at her. Kitty Wellesley starts speaking in a cheerful tone.

Kitty Wellesley: You mischievous man.
Wellington: I'm not that mischievous.
Kitty Wellesley: You do sometimes get into those moods and it doesn't happen often. But I still can tell when you are in one.
Wellington: You are being the cheeky one here.
Kitty Wellesley: Says you, Arthur.

Kitty Wellesley passionately kisses Wellington on the lips. A couple of minutes later Lord Uxbridge enters the tent and awkwardly stares at Kitty and Wellington.

Wellington notices Lord Uxbridge staring at them and he gently breaks the kiss. Wellington starts speaking in a calm voice.

Wellington: What are you doing here Uxbridge?
Lord Uxbridge: I was coming here to check up on you sir.
Wellington: I'm alright Uxbridge although I could be better. I still feel quite awful.
Lord Uxbridge: I'm glad that you are alright sir.

Wellington: Uxbridge I heard that Lieutenant General Carrington wanted to give me some reports.
Lord Uxbridge: Yes sir he did.
Wellington: Well when is he going to give me these reports?
Lord Uxbridge: He gave me the reports sir and I have sorted them out for you.
Wellington: Thank you Uxbridge. Now, do you have anything else to tell me?
Lord Uxbridge: No sir, I shall be off now sir.

Lord Uxbridge calmly exits the tent and Kitty Wellesley gets up and sits down beside Wellington. Wellington carefully sits up and Kitty wraps her arm around him. Kitty Wellesley starts speaking in a calm voice.

Kitty Wellesley: You know that I don't mind your mischief. I like seeing you happy.
Wellington: I also like seeing you happy Kitty. It makes me happy to see you happy.
Kitty Wellesley: Your happiness also brings me joy Arthur.

Wellington gently kisses Kitty Wellesley on the cheek. Then he starts speaking in a calm voice.

Wellington: I'm going to do some work now my love.
Kitty Wellesley: Alright my dear Arthur.

Wellington gently grabs the small pile of papers and he begins carefully reading them. Meanwhile, at the French camp, Joseph Ney is at the gun range.

Grabbing his pistol off his belt he aims it at the middle target. Taking a deep and calming breath he then fires and the bullet hits close to the centre of the target.

Joseph Ney suddenly feels someone gently put their hand on his shoulder. Joachim Murat starts speaking in a calm voice.

Joachim Murat: That was a good shot.
Joseph Ney: There is still room for improvement.
Joachim Murat: Yes, I understand that. However, I can tell why you are out here alone.
Joseph Ney: How would you know why I'm out here?

Joachim Murat: Your father didn't allow you to do that mission you did last night. I can tell that you want to do some missions on your own.
Joseph Ney: My last mission I did on my own was at Eylau. I almost ended up being killed during that mission.
Joachim Murat: It was quite a bloody battle.
Joseph Ney: Ever since that day my father hasn't allowed me to do missions on my own. He is worried about me getting myself killed.

Joseph Ney puts his pistol on his belt and Joachim Murat continues speaking in a calm voice.

Joachim Murat: You seem just like your father. You have his bravery and his smarts.
Joseph Ney: I've heard that a lot.
Joachim Murat: But it seems that you also are a bit disobedient.
Joseph Ney: If you knew what my life was like you would understand why Im like this.

Joachim Murat: I see.
Joseph Ney: I don't feel comfortable talking about my past.
Joachim Murat: I understand.
Joseph Ney: Im going to go continue with my duties.
Joachim Murat: Alright.

Joseph Ney calmly walks off feeling slightly irritated. Meanwhile, a few hours later at the British camp, Wellington is lying in bed reading his reports.

Suddenly Kitty Wellesley enters the tent with a bowl of warm vegetable soup. She then starts speaking in a slightly cheerful voice.

Kitty Wellesley: Arthur are you well enough to eat?
Wellington: Yes, Im well enough to eat something.
Kitty Wellesley: Thats good. It seems that you are recovering then.
Wellington: Indeed.

Wellington puts his reports aside and Kitty Wellesley happily walks over to him. She then gently hands him the bowl of vegetable soup. Wellington then begins happily eating it.

Kitty Wellesley happily sits down next to Wellington and she continues speaking in a cheerful voice.

Kitty Wellesley: Im glad that you are recovering from this Arthur. But I think that you should go to sleep early tonight.
Wellington: Why do you say that Kitty?
Kitty Wellesley: You have been working quite hard for the past few days. You need to get some more rest. You also still need to recover from your previous injuries.
Wellington: I understand Kitty and your right.

Wellington carefully puts his bowl of vegetable soup down. Then he carefully grabs his golden pocket watch out of his pocket. Gently opening the pocket watch he notices that it's 8:45.

Putting the pocket watch away he then starts speaking in a calm voice.

Wellington: I shall go to sleep soon my dear.
Kitty Wellesley: Alright Arthur.
Wellington: I won't stay up late tonight I promise you, my dear Kitty.
Kitty Wellesley: Im glad that you are taking care of yourself, Arthur.

Wellington: Im hoping that after this war I will be able to get proper rest. I've had many nights during this war where I couldn't sleep. I just worked through the whole night.
Kitty Wellesley: You will Arthur.
Wellington: I will try not to work myself to the point of exhaustion if I decide to become Prime Minister after this war.
Kitty Wellesley: Are you still unsure about that?
Wellington: Yes, I am Kitty.

Kitty Wellesley gently puts her arm on his shoulder. She then starts speaking in a cheerful voice.

Kitty Wellesley: Remember I will always support your decision. If you become Prime Minister or not.
Wellington: Im delighted that you will support me either way, my dear Kitty.
Kitty Wellesley: To me, you would make a great Prime Minister.
Wellington: Really?

Kitty Wellesley: Yes Arthur. But the decision is yours, not mine. I will support you with either.
Wellington: Thank you, my love.

Wellington grabs the bowl of soup and continues eating it. A few minutes later Wellington is carefully unbuttoning his blue coat. Then he takes it off and carefully gets up and walks over to his desk.

Putting the coat on the back of his seat he then sits down and begins untying his jet black boots. Taking his boots off he then puts them under his desk. Wellington then gets up and walks over to Kitty who is lying in bed.

Then he gets into bed and he feels Kitty's gentle hand grab his and he gently holds on to it. Kitty then gently kisses Wellington on the cheek. Then she starts speaking in a cheerful voice.

Kitty Wellesley: Good night my love.
Wellington: Good night my dear.

They both close their eyes and enter a deep and peaceful sleep. Meanwhile a few hours later in the French camp it is now midnight Joseph Ney and Henry Wellesley are both lying in bed.

Henry Wellesley starts speaking in a calm and slightly tired voice.

Henry Wellesley: Joseph do you think that the poison worked? Do you think my brother is dead?
Joseph Ney: Possibly but there is always a chance that the poison lost its potency and it didn't work. This means he could still be alive.
Henry Wellesley: I see.
Joseph Ney: But Im unsure what that chance is.

Henry Wellesley: Alright well Im going to get some sleep, Joseph.
Joseph Ney: Good night Henry.
Henry Wellesley: Good night Joseph.

Henry Wellesley closes his eyes and enters a deep sleep. A couple of minutes later Joseph Ney slowly closes his eyes and enters his fantasies.

Upon opening his eyes Joseph Ney notices that he is close to his childhood home in Paris. He also notices that it is almost dark.

Then he begins running home eventually he gets to a large dark wooden door. Carefully opening the large door he quietly walks inside and gently closes the door behind him.

Walking down a small hallway he notices a dim light coming from one of the rooms along with a quiet crackling noise. Joseph Ney stops in front of the room and notices his father standing in front of the lit fireplace.

Marshal Ney turns around and stares at Joseph with a look of concern and slight disappointment on his face. He starts speaking in a slightly concerned tone.

Marshal Ney: Joseph my boy we need to talk come here.
Joseph Ney: Yes father.

Joseph Ney calmly walks over to Marshal Ney. Suddenly Marshal Ney gently grabs one of Joseph's hands and he stares at the blood on his knuckles. Marshal Ney sighs out of slight frustration and he starts speaking in a calm yet slightly irritated tone.

Marshal Ney: You have been fighting again. I have told you to stop causing fights on the streets Joseph. I don't want my son to be sent to prison! I don't want our family name to be tarnished!
Joseph Ney: They deserve it for treating me like merde. (shit)
Marshal Ney: Joseph I understand your frustrations. But I don't want you to be causing fights on the streets where you could be sent to prison for causing trouble.
Joseph Ney: How else am I meant to take out my frustrations!?

Marshal Ney lets go of Joseph's hand and he sighs out of annoyance. Then he continues speaking in an irritated tone.

Marshal Ney: Joseph. I don't want you hurting people on the streets. I understand that you want to fight I see the fire in you.
Joseph Ney: I understand father and Im sorry for what I have done.
Marshal Ney: You can still fight Joseph but maybe with some more discipline. It also might help you with your anger.
Joseph Ney: What do you mean father I thought that you wouldn't want me to fight.

Marshal Ney smiles a little bit and he starts speaking in a slightly calmer tone.

Marshal Ney: You would make a great warrior with your strength and determination. However, you do need some discipline.
Joseph Ney: I understand that I have problems with not following your rules. But I still don't understand what you mean.
Marshal Ney: I have been thinking about this for a while Joseph. But I just haven't been sure if you were ready until now.
Joseph Ney: What have you been thinking about father?

Marshal Ney: I feel that you are ready to join the French Army Joseph. It will help you become more disciplined.
Joseph Ney: The truth is father I was thinking that as well. I was wondering if I should be a soldier. But I was worried about telling you.
Marshal Ney: Joseph. You can tell me anything you know that right.
Joseph Ney: Yes father.

Marshal Ney gently puts his hand on Joseph's shoulder and he starts speaking in a calm voice.

Marshal Ney: I feel that you would make a great soldier in time Joseph. Now go get yourself cleaned up.
Joseph Ney: Yes father.

Joseph Ney cheerfully exits the room then he wakes up and slowly opens his eyes. Noticing that it's still dark outside Joseph gently grabs his pocket watch out of his pocket.

Gently opening his pocket watch he notices that it's 4:30. Putting the pocket watch away he slowly closes his eyes and enters a deep and peaceful sleep once again.

To be Continued...
