A Search for Worthiness

It is 10:30 and the British and Prussian Armies have set up their camp on a vast grassy plain. Meanwhile, in Frederick's tent, Frederick is calmly working at his desk and Voltaire is cheerfully working on his story. Suddenly Prince Henry calmly enters the tent. Frederick notices Prince Henry and stops writing something. Then he starts speaking in a calm voice.

Frederick: What is it, Henry?
Prince Henry: I noticed that you gave Lawrence his father's sabre.
Frederick: Yes I did Henry he deserves to have it. But he doesn't think that.
Prince Henry: Why does he think that he doesn't deserve his father's sabre?
Frederick: He doesn't think he is worthy of wielding it.
Prince Henry: Why does he think that?

Frederick: His father was a General as you know Henry. And Lawrence is just a Lieutenant.
Prince Henry: Does he think he is unworthy because of his rank?
Frederick: I have a feeling that might be the case.
Prince Henry: I also heard that he saved the Duke of Wellington.
Frederick: Lawrence in my eyes is worthy of his father's sabre. But I wish there was a way to make him see that.

Prince Henry cheerfully smiles and he starts speaking in a slightly cheerful tone.

Prince Henry: I'm sure that he will figure out that he is worthy eventually.
Frederick: Your right Henry.
Prince Henry: You are right about him being worthy I see it in him too. But he just needs to find it.
Frederick: He will find it. I know it. He will find that spark.
Prince Henry: Yes but he just needs time to find it.

Frederick: I know what it's like to not feel worthy. I didn't feel worthy of our father's sabre. At one point I didn't even feel worthy of the crown.
Prince Henry: I have felt that feeling as well at times. But then I realised that I am worthy.
Frederick: I hope that Lawrence will realise that he is worthy soon.
Prince Henry: He will Frederick.
Frederick: Anything else that you need to say, Henry?
Prince Henry: No I shall go back to my duties.

Prince Henry calmly exits the tent and Frederick continues with his work.

*Frederick in thought*
I know that he is worthy. I have seen it in him for a while. I just hope that he can find it.

I understand how he feels and he knows that. But I want him to see that he is worthy.

He has the spirit of a warrior. Just like his father. I know that he can find that spark and ignite that fire inside him. I know how great he can be and I know that he can prove to himself that he is worthy.

I will always believe in him.

Meanwhile, in the British camp in Wellington's tent. Wellington is calmly staring at a map that he has placed on his desk. He then begins marking things down on the map. A couple of minutes later Lord Uxbridge calmly enters the tent. Then he walks over to Wellington and stands beside him. He then starts speaking in a calm yet serious voice.

Lord Uxbridge: How long until we reach our destination sir?
Wellington: I would say four days. Maybe seven depending on the weather.
Lord Uxbridge: I see.
Wellington: Anything else Uxbridge?
Lord Uxbridge: How do you think Lieutenant Sundermann will do as a Captain?

Wellington: If he ends up being a Captain in a few days I'm sure that he won't be troublesome like Captain Watson. He will make a great Captain Uxbridge.
Lord Uxbridge: I agree with you, sir. I'm sure he will definitely be better than Captain Watson. That man causes way too much trouble for my liking.
Wellington: Indeed. He kept upsetting the Prussian King. If he does anything like that again I might have to have him stripped of his rank.
Lord Uxbridge: That is understandable sir.
Wellington: Anything else Uxbridge?
Lord Uxbridge: No sir, I shall continue with my duties.

Lord Uxbridge calmly exits the tent and Kitty Wellesley nervously stares at Wellington. Wellington notices Kitty nervously staring at him and he starts speaking in a calm voice.

Wellington: What is wrong my dear?
Kitty Wellesley: I'm just worried about the battle Arthur.
Wellington: I understand Kitty.
Kitty Wellesley: I'm worried about you getting hurt or possibly even killed.
Wellington: I will be careful Kitty. I also promise you that you won't lose me, my dear.

Kitty Wellesley: I'm also worried about the French hurting me.
Wellington: They won't hurt you I won't allow that. Besides they will have to get through the British and Prussian Armies.
Kitty Wellesley: I'm still afraid Arthur. I have been afraid every time you had to leave and go to battle.
Wellington: I understand that my dear. But I'm afraid to I'm just good at hiding it sometimes. I promise that nothing will happen to both of us. Now I need to continue with my work.
Kitty Wellesley: Alright but don't work too hard Arthur.
Wellington: I won't.

Wellington gently rolls the map back up and puts it aside. Then he grabs some papers from the pile and begins reading them. Meanwhile, on the outskirts of the Prussian camp, Lawrence calmly walks over to Victor Nyland. Lawrence starts speaking in a calm voice.

Lawrence: Victor?
Victor Nyland: What is it, Lawrence?
Lawrence: Do you think that I am worthy of my father's sabre?
Victor Nyland: I do Lawrence. But you need to see if you are worthy. Remember that.
Lawrence: I understand that.
Victor Nyland: I know that you can find it within yourself that you are worthy.

Lawrence: Should we practice then?
Victor Nyland: Yes let's practice.

Victor Nyland picks up the two small branches in front of him. He then hands one to Lawrence. Lawrence firmly grips the branch with his right hand. Victor Nyland firmly grips the branch with both hands and gets into a defensive stance. He then starts speaking in a calm and confident voice.

Victor Nyland: I want you to work on your attacks today.
Lawrence: Alright.
Victor Nyland: Remember in a swordfight it's not just about defending yourself it's also about attacking your opponent.
Lawrence: Yes Victor.
Victor Nyland: Now show me what you got kid.

Lawrence swiftly swings the branch upwards and Victor blocks the attack. Victor then starts speaking in a calm and slightly cheerful voice.

Victor Nyland: It's good to attack quickly. You can overwhelm your opponent.
Lawrence: Alright.
Victor Nyland: You can do this.
Lawrence: Yes.

Lawrence quickly swings the branch from the right to the left and Victor blocks the attack. Lawrence then swings the branch from the left to the right and Victor confidently blocks the attack. Victor Nyland starts speaking in a calm voice.

Victor Nyland: You are holding back Lawrence. Why are you doing that?
Lawrence: I'm not use to fighting with something that isn't a gun. I'm use to ranged combat not hand to hand combat.
Victor Nyland: That's not the only reason why you are holding back is it?
Lawrence: I'm practising against you, Victor. I don't like fighting against people in my family. Especially, my brother, he is a nuisance.
Victor Nyland: I understand that. But if you were fighting against the enemy you can't hold back.
Lawrence: I understand.
Victor Nyland: Let's continue.

Lawrence hastily lifts the branch and swings it downwards. Victor confidently blocks the attack. Lawrence then tries to fling the branch out of Victor's hands. But he fails to do so and Victor flings the branch out of Lawrence's hand. Victor Nyland starts speaking in a calm voice.

Victor Nyland: You are getting better Lawrence. But you are holding back. You can't do that in an actual battle.
Lawrence: I understand that.
Victor Nyland: I know that you can fight I see it in you. But you have a problem with holding back. Next time I don't want you to hold back Lawrence.
Lawrence: Alright.
Victor Nyland: I know that you can do this Lawrence.
Lawrence: Yes.

Victor Nyland: Go think about what you need to improve on. I will see you tomorrow Lawrence.
Lawrence: Yes Victor.

Lawrence picks up the branch and hands it to Victor. Then he calmly walks off back to the Prussian camp. Leaving Victor to look out over the vast grassy plain.

*Victor Nyland in thought*
I know that he can do this. I know that he has that fight in him just like his father did.

But he is holding it back. I don't want him to hold back. He needs to understand that holding back in an actual sword fight could get him killed.

He is a fighter and I want him to realise that. I will not give up on him.

I also want him to realise that he is worthy of wielding his fathers sabre. I will help him realise that.

Alexander if you are watching your boy I know that you are proud of him.

Meanwhile, on the outskirts of the French camp, Joseph Ney is staring out across the vast plain feeling frustrated by the situation. Joseph Ney suddenly hears footsteps behind him and he immediately turns around. He notices his father standing there staring at him. Marshal Ney starts speaking in a calm voice.

Marshal Ney: I can tell something is bothering you, Joseph. What's wrong my boy?
Joseph Ney: We failed to get the information out of Wellington and we let him escape.
Marshal Ney: I understand if you are frustrated, Joseph. But we can't give up yet you know this.
Joseph Ney: I hate feeling like a failure father!
Marshal Ney: These mistakes help you learn Joseph. I have told you this before.
Joseph Ney: I don't like being seen as a failure by you or anyone else!

Joseph Ney goes to walk off back to the camp but Marshal Ney firmly grabs Joseph's arm. Marshal Ney starts speaking in a calm yet slightly irritated voice.

Marshal Ney: Joseph I do not see you as a failure. So, please stop thinking that.
Joseph Ney: Alright.
Marshal Ney: I will never see you as a failure Joseph. I have told you this before.
Joseph Ney: Alright.
Marshal Ney: Mistakes help you learn Joseph so please try and learn from them. I know that it's frustrating Joseph but I want you to learn.
Joseph Ney: I understand father.

Marshal Ney: Good Joseph.
Joseph Ney: But what are we going to do about Wellington?
Marshal Ney: I doubt that we will get a chance to capture him again. We shouldn't send out another small Army we would easily get spotted due to this vast plain.
Joseph Ney: Well what should we do then?
Marshal Ney: We might have to try and kill him in battle. Then the British and Prussians might surrender.
Joseph Ney: Alright father.

Marshal Ney lets go of Joseph Ney's arm and Joseph then starts calmly walking back to camp. A couple of minutes later Joseph Ney calmly enters his tent. He notices that Henry Wellesley is peacefully taking a nap. He then calmly sits down at his desk and quietly sighs to himself out of slight irritation. Henry Wellesley slowly opens his eyes and awkwardly stares at Joseph. Henry then starts speaking in a calm yet slightly confused tone.

Henry Wellesley: Are you alright Joseph?
Joseph Ney: No I'm not alright Henry I'm just frustrated with myself.
Henry Wellesley: What's wrong Joseph?
Joseph Ney: Your brother escaped and we failed to get any information out of him. I feel like a failure Henry.
Henry Wellesley: Joseph you are not a failure to me. I would be frustrated with myself if I was in your position. I know what failure and frustration feels like. I have had to deal with it most of my time as a soldier.

Joseph Ney: I'm guessing that most of that frustration was towards your brother?
Henry Wellesley: Yes it was mainly towards him. As he just ignored me most of the time or stole my glory.
Joseph Ney: I'm sorry again about your brother. You didn't deserve to be treated that way at all.
Henry Wellesley: I don't know why he ignored me. I don't know what I did wrong back then. But I hate that he ignored me and stole my glory.
Joseph Ney: If I was in your position I would feel the same way, Henry. Now I have some work to do.

Joseph Ney grabs some papers from the pile and begins calmly writing something. While Henry Wellesley slowly goes back to sleep. Meanwhile, in the Prussian camp, Lawrence is sitting on a log with his father's sabre on his lap. Suddenly he hears footsteps approaching him and he looks up and notices Frederick calmly approaching him. Frederick calmly stands in front of Lawrence and smiles at him a little bit. He then starts speaking in a calm and slightly cheerful voice.

Frederick: I saw you practising Lawrence and I see that fight in you.
Lawrence: Yes Your Majesty.
Frederick: I want to tell you something, Lawrence.
Lawrence: Alright Your Majesty.

Frederick calmly draws his sabre and continues speaking in a calm and slightly cheerful voice.

Frederick: A sabre is an elegant weapon unlike the swords of old. In the past men made their swords their own. Some were passed down through the family. The future wielder of the sword wielded it as if it was their own. But they still remembered the past wielders of the sword.
Lawrence: I see.
Frederick: I know that you will always remember your father. But I also know that you will have to learn to wield that sabre as if it were your own.
Lawrence: I understand that Your Majesty.
Frederick: To me you are worthy of wielding that sabre. But I know that you don't feel that way just yet. Search for it, Lawrence.

Lawrence: Search for what Your Majesty?
Frederick: Search for your worthiness. I know that you will find it. I'm also sure that you know it's in there somewhere.
Lawrence: Yes Your Majesty.
Frederick: Also keep practising Lawrence you are doing well.
Lawrence: Thank you, Your Majesty.

Frederick puts his sabre back in his sheath and calmly walks off. Lawrence puts his sheath back on his belt. Then he gets up and calmly draws the sabre and stares at the shiny elegant blade.

*Lawrence in thought*
His Majesty is right I can find my worthiness. But I just need to search for it.

I know that if my father was still here he would see that I'm worthy of his sabre. But I need to see that I'm worthy that's the important thing.

I know that he would be proud of me.

A lot of people are seeing me as worthy. But I still don't see myself as worthy. Even though I have achieved a lot of things.

My father achieved a lot of things as well and I hope to be as successful as he was.

Lawrence calmly puts the sabre back in the sheath and calmly walks off to his tent. A few hours later the sun has now set and Lawrence is lying in bed with his father's sabre beside him. He then stares at the sabre.

*Lawrence in thought*
I will make you proud father. I know that you are probably watching me. I will not fail. I wish to succeed as much as you did.

I will not fail. I will not give up. I will prove myself.

I still hope that I will find out who my father was. I only know his name and his rank. I now have the necklace he promised to give to me. Along with his sabre.

I understand that there is a war going on and the King doesn't have time to tell me everything. But why has he been delaying telling me things about my father? Is there something that the King doesn't want to tell me?

I should get some rest as well I will be practising with Victor again tomorrow.

Hopefully, I will get answers.

Lawrence slowly closes his eyes and enters a deep and peaceful sleep. Meanwhile, in Frederick's tent, Frederick is finishing up his work. Then he takes off his coat and hangs it up on the back of his seat. He then takes off his boots and places them underneath his desk. Getting up from his seat he cheerfully walks over to Voltaire who is lying in bed cheerfully smiling at him. He then gets into bed and gently kisses Voltaire on the cheek. Voltaire starts speaking in a calm voice.

Voltaire: Is Lawrence alright?
Frederick: Lawrence is alright Voltaire. He just doesn't think that he is worthy of wielding his fathers sabre.
Voltaire: Why does he think that Frederick?
Frederick: I think it's because of how much his father had achieved.
Voltaire: Lawrence saved the Duke and that was a brave thing to do by himself. I would say that he is worthy.

Frederick: I see that he is worthy to Voltaire. But he needs to figure out that he is worthy. I know that he can do it.
Voltaire: I hope he can realise that he is worthy.
Frederick: He will Voltaire. I know that he will. Good night my love.
Voltaire: Good night my dear Frederick.

Voltaire gently kisses Frederick on the cheek then he slowly closes his eyes and enters a deep and peaceful sleep. Frederick slowly closes his eyes and enters his fantasies. Upon opening his eyes he notices that the sunlight is shining through some red and gold curtains. He also notices that he is lying in a comfortable and grand bed. Eventually, he realises that he is in his childhood home. Suddenly Wilhelmine enters the room and starts speaking in a calm voice which is also holding back some sadness.

Wilhelmine: Your Majesty?
Frederick: No need for that sister. Please just call me by my name. No need for formalities.
Wilhelmine: Are you alright Frederick? I heard you crying last night.
Frederick: He's really gone isn't he? I'm King now.
Wilhelmine: Yes Frederick he's gone. But I want to know if you are alright you have been crying a lot.

Frederick: I didn't want to be King this soon. I'm not alright I'm in pain Wilhelmine. Even though he hurt me and I was probably the least favourite child he ever had. He was still my father and at one point he loved me.
Wilhelmine: I understand that Frederick.
Frederick: It hurts a lot. I don't feel like I'm ready to be King.
Wilhelmine: You are ready Frederick. I know that you are.

Frederick feels tears slowly streaming down his face and Wilhelmine calmly walks over to him. She then sits down beside him on the bed. Then she starts speaking in a calm and comforting voice.

Wilhelmine: Frederick I understand that you are in pain and you are also possibly under a lot of stress.
Frederick: Do you really think I'm ready to be King sister?
Wilhelmine: Yes Frederick I know that you are ready to be King.
Frederick: Will I be a good King?
Wilhelmine: You will be a great King Fritz.

Frederick: I'm so stressed and slightly scared.
Wilhelmine: Why are you scared, Frederick?
Frederick: I don't want to fail my Kingdom. I don't want to be seen as an awful King.
Wilhelmine: You will not be a failure Frederick. You will not fail this Kingdom.

Frederick suddenly starts to sob into his pillow and Wilhelmine begins to gently stroke Frederick's hair. Wilhelmine then continues to speak in a calm and comforting voice.

Wilhelmine: There's something else wrong isn't there Frederick?
Frederick: I still miss Katte. It's almost been two years since my father ordered his execution.
Wilhelmine: You wish he was here to see you become King don't you?
Frederick: Yes, I do. It's still hurting me that he isn't here even though it's been two years.
Wilhelmine: Greif is normal Frederick. It can last a long time. Even once you have finished grieving the pain still lingers.

Frederick: I wish I could have stopped him from being killed. But I couldn't do anything to stop it. Our father also threatened me with death.
Wilhelmine: It still haunts you doesn't it Frederick?
Frederick: Yes, it does I'm still having nightmares almost every night. That's why I'm sometimes crying. It's not just because our father is gone.
Wilhelmine: The nightmares will fade away in due time Frederick.
Frederick: I understand.

Wilhelmine starts to quietly hum a soothing tune while stroking Frederick's hair. Frederick starts to slowly calm down. Eventually, Frederick calms down and takes his face out of the pillow and stares at Wilhelmine. Wilhelmine gently wipes away Frederick's tears. Then she starts speaking in a calm and slightly cheerful voice.

Wilhelmine: You will make a great King Frederick. I will always believe in you and I will be here if you need me.
Frederick: Is it normal for me to feel scared of taking on the role of King?
Wilhelmine: Yes Frederick. You don't want to let down your people. Being King is also a huge duty, Frederick.
Frederick: I now feel that I have the weight of the entire Kingdom on my shoulders.

Wilhelmine: You will have people there to help you, Frederick. You won't be doing this alone.
Frederick: Really?
Wilhelmine: Yes Frederick.

Suddenly Prince Henry enters the room and politely bows to Frederick. Then he starts speaking in a calm and polite voice.

Prince Henry: Your Majesty.
Frederick: Henry I thank you for your politeness. But please just call me by my name we are family. No need for formalities.
Prince Henry: Sorry Your Majesty. I mean Frederick!
Frederick: It's fine Henry. We are getting use to it all.
Prince Henry: Your right and I'm sorry for my awkwardness.

Frederick: Again it's alright Henry. But why are you here Henry?
Prince Henry: Just to check on you, Frederick. I can tell that you are going through a hard time.
Frederick: I doubt that you are here to just check on me, Henry. I can tell that you want something.
Prince Henry: I wish to help you, Frederick. You can't do everything alone, Frederick.

Frederick quietly sighs to himself then he starts speaking in a calm yet serious voice.

Frederick: Henry.
Prince Henry: Yes Frederick?
Frederick: You are still a child Henry.
Prince Henry: I'm not. I'm fourteen.
Frederick: You are still too young to take on an important role. Maybe if you were eighteen or twenty then I would allow you to do something.
Prince Henry: Fine.

Frederick: I promise that you will have a role in the future Henry. But for now, just focus on growing up.
Prince Henry: Fine.
Frederick: Go check on Augustus. I can tell he has been quite upset.
Prince Henry: Yes Frederick.

Prince Henry hastily exits the room and Frederick starts speaking in a calm yet slightly guilty voice.

Frederick: I feel bad that I had to turn him down like that.
Wilhelmine: You did the right thing, Frederick.
Frederick: Really?
Wilhelmine: Yes Frederick. Because Henry does still have a lot to learn before he gets an important role.
Frederick: I hope he doesn't feel hurt by my decision.
Wilhelmine: I'm sure that he understands why you did what you did Frederick.

Frederick: I don't like seeing him upset.
Wilhelmine: I understand that Frederick. Now, what are you going to do?
Frederick: I want to get some more rest. I'm just tired, Wilhelmine.
Wilhelmine: I understand.
Frederick: Just wake me up when lunch is ready.
Wilhelmine: Alright. Do you want the curtains closed?
Frederick: Yes.

Wilhelmine calmly walks over to the window and gently closes the curtains. She then calmly exits the room gently closing the door behind her. Frederick slowly wakes up and notices that it's still dark outside. He also notices Voltaire gently holding his hand and cheerfully smiles. Then he slowly closes his eyes and enters a deep and peaceful sleep once more.

To be Continued...
