CHAPTER ONE.
dark rooms.
(past events wouldn't be shown in the actual show, i'm just giving background knowledge and references)
—
nineteen's bare feet lightly met the cold tiles. she was running her fingertips across the neatly styled glass of the lab rooms, with which she had been in multiple times.
her clothes were cotton pajamas that had white stripes against the light blue fabric. her knuckles were bloody.
the end of nineteen's hair was wavier than the top. it was washed frequently but she always ended up covered in dust, goop, dirt, and sometimes blood. but, hey, to nineteen, it was a major step up from the hospital gown or the green army suit they used to keep her in all of the time.
dr. owens might have something to do with it. he was much more gentle than papa but could still be cruel if he wanted, specifically, whenever nineteen acted out. aka, harmed a guard if they gripped her arms too hard. which was fair play, that was undeniable, but at least he was nice enough to give nineteen her own caregiver.
said babysitter, mary, felt for nineteen. mary was there when dr. brenner was there. she had been one of the nurses, who assisted the doctors silently. nineteen had seen her multiple times yet never spoke to her.
the good thing about mary was that she learned to never ask questions but always made sure nineteen was comfortable. she calmed her down before she was sent off for testing, and she washed her hair, and fed her. she rubbed nineteen's back once in a while, was a teacher, and a friend. she always held her hand when nineteen wanted it. papa was never this nice. he only pretended. mary did not.
owens was equally as nice as mary, he was just doing his job. he always attempted to crack jokes before realizing that nineteen had no idea what he was even talking about. walking through the halls of hawkins lab, nineteen took slow deep breaths. she pretty much had free range now, just not when there were 'visitors'.
nineteen can still remember the day she tried to escape. it was close to a year ago, and she had never tried to escape again.
"stop it! no! no!"
nineteen gasped, holding the wrists of the hands that are wrapped around her neck. she chokes out small words, trying to talk.
"stop! help.." she says, trying to find the will to get out of it. she kicks her feet repeatedly, but the big man is holding her too tightly.
just when she's about to lose consciousness, there's a yell and the man drops her. she feels like she falls forever as she leaves the dark place.
nineteen's eyes opened quickly and she slid off of the table and ran to the door. she collided against it, banging her fists on it. she started crying. "let me out! please! papa!" she screamed.
"stop it! papa! let me out!"
the door opened and nineteen left the room quickly. she started to run down the hall but papa stepped in front of her quickly.
what happened?
nineteen started crying. she looked up into his dark eyes and gasped for air, wrapping a hand lightly around her neck to indicate what had been happening. "hurt me." she says, and then she glances around. "loud. so loud." she said, referring to all of the strange words and accents she had heard.
"what do you mean?" he asked more sternly, not caring about the fact she had been choked.
nineteen grimaced. "talking. but their mouth.." she mumbled again. papa bent down to her eye level. "what about them?"
she shook her head. "not moving." she whispered.
a man suddenly bursted out of the room behind the one she had been locked in. he looked in awe. "i think it happened. we achieved it. look at her wavelength levels on the fifth channel. they've never been like this." he pointed to the clipboard in his hands. papa moved away from her and grabbed the clipboard. he scanned through the documents before the other man stepped forward.
"nineteen," he started. "what am i thinking about right now?" he bent down and nineteen stared wide eyed at him for a moment. suddenly, her eyebrows raised a little as she saw a picture of him with a woman and little girl.
"lucy?"
the man almost laughed in astonishment. he looked back up to brenner, who was looking down at him in wonder and relief. he then looked back at nineteen.
"now how could you have known his wife's name?"
"amazing." the man stood back up, crossing his arms. "truly extraordinary." he said. his eyes looked to the young girl, before the older man standing in front of her.
"we have to tell the others." he informed the man standing beside him before he looked to the guards, waving his hand. "take her to her room, we'll do more later." the same guards advanced towards nineteen and she started to whimper again, backing away. they grabbed ahold of her arms.
"papa! papa, please! papa, пожалуйста, папа!" she screamed to the top of her lungs, but he never relented.
nineteen felt anger course through her entire body so she clenched her hands together, and the lights flickered. it was then that the two men holding her fell to the ground writhing in pain. it was like they had been electrocuted.
before nineteen could even think, she started running. she heard papa yell at her but she kept running. anything to get away from him. she started running towards the lobby, nothing but escaping on her mind.
she slid to a stop on the next hallway turn and stared at the three men that lined up. they all simultaneously pointed their guns at the girl.
nineteen?
not now, одиннадцать.
it faded out, and nineteen assumed that eleven was interrupted in her mental message to the girl. so nineteen blocked out everything and stared them down. her head slowly tilted upwards and the lights flickered again. in an instant, they all fell to the ground writhing in pain - the crackle of electricity echoing in the air.
she ran towards them, hopping around the dead bodies. she hit the third turn.
nineteen?
she almost skidded in her steps, thinking of eleven. she could go back for her, she had time. the mentally communicating message that nineteen had discovered between the two girls was a big comfort for both of them. it made them realize they weren't alone in the lab and they had each other. it was a bond. they chose not to tell papa, in fear of it being taken away or used for something else.
when nineteen hesitated, just for that small moment to think of the person that she loved most, yet barely even knew - they caught her.
they came out of nowhere, standing lined up at the end of the hallway just like they had moments ago.
nineteen gritted her teeth and narrowed her eyes. she zeroed in on the man in the middle. she clenched her fists and started slowly walking forward. they bulked up and held up their guns.
"nineteen, stop."
when they reached her, nineteen took her palm and slammed the security guard's head into the wall. his skull cracking echoed throughout the hallway and she grabbed the other guard's neck and flipped herself over so that she was on his back.
a guard ran at her and gripped her arms which made her kick at the air. she screamed again as the electric pain shot up her left arm. this was happening more often now that the demogorgan had taken will byers. except nineteen didn't know that reason.
feeling the blood start to trickle down her cheeks, she blinked rapidly. taking her right leg, she swooped it around the guard that was holding her shoulder. she flipped and pressed her hand to the back of his neck, sending electric shocks throughout his body. they fell to the ground together.
nineteen stood up, breathing heavily, as the man writhed for a few seconds and then stilled entirely.
nineteen heard footsteps but she didn't even look. she was tired and she just wanted to be safe and have a good life. she wanted papa to love her as she loved him.
suddenly, she felt the pair of goggles wrap around her head and she slowly started to cry. she started gasping for air as they locked the chain on the back. papa picked her up bridal-style and started carrying her to her little dark room.
'the goggles' were these gray goggles with black lenses that made everything pitch black. she was unable to see. they helped her more than anything but they restrained her very easily. she hated them with a passion. yet she had to wear them because she was locked in a dark room as a small child for a long periods of time and the light hurt her eyes often. their main usage was to alienate her and wind down her powers. however, they helped control her powers when she looked at someone.
as papa carried her to her room, nineteen felt a presence next to him. she felt a cool hand push back her bangs and rest on her forehead. after having her head shaved for so long, it was weird to have hair that now grew to her shoulders. she doesn't remember why papa let her hair grow out but continued to shave eleven's head.
nineteen slowly raised her arm to keep mary's hand there. she wrapped her fingers lightly around the soft skin of her wrist and squeezed once.
when they arrived to the door of her room, papa silently set her down and walked away. nineteen felt the warm body next to her rest her hands on her shoulders. nineteen turned to face it. there a sense of hesitation hanging in the air before a pair of hands reached around to unwrap the goggles on nineteen's face.
nineteen squinted at first but her eyes slowly adjusted to see the woman in front of her. she reached into her dress pocket and retrieved a handkerchief. she wiped the tears and blood from nineteen's cheeks softly, just for new tears to slowly follow the old ones.
the woman stopped, and pressed a hand to her chest. "mary." she said warmly. nineteen nodded slightly.
and then mary gently pushed her backwards into the small space. nineteen started crying as she heard the door close and sank to the ground. she sobbed as she wrapped her arms around her knees and looked to the ceiling. there was a small bit of light but nowhere the amount she needed.
nineteen breathes in slowly, the events from the past replaying in her mind. she flicks a part of her bangs out of her face and looks upwards. the fluorescent lights stare brightly into her electric blue eyes. she closes them softly. her hair was a lot longer as well now.
"say, champ, why don't you wait out here while i have a talk with mom and the chief here,"
nineteen's eyes slide open as she walks forward a little more and peers around the wall.
when she looks down the hall, she's met with dr. owens and will byers. will is a small, scared boy that visits often. she's never met him, but dr. owens had told her enough about him that she had started asking about him frequently.
"getting a crush are we?" owens had chuckled once. nineteen's face has distorted into confusion and borderline disgust as she sat on the counter in the lounge. owens had shifted uncomfortably and walked out, bowl of soup in hand.
nineteen stares at the small boy as he sits down. he looks at his lap silently. nineteen feels herself wanting to talk to him. to hold his hand. her favorite comfort gesture.
i wonder what mike's doing.
nineteen squints and urges past those thoughts. she wants to get closer.
she then steps out of her hiding place and walks towards him slowly. he looks up. "oh, h-hi."
"hello." nineteen says pleasantly. "it's nice to meet you." she offers. will nods. "you too. what's your name?"
"ni-" she starts. "i can't say." she tells him hesitantly. will's face turns to a soft confusion. nineteen was staring at him with a sudden worried look. it was like this for a minute.
"i-i should be going. my.. dad.. he'll be upset." she then says. will nods. "oh, okay. it was nice meeting you." he says slowly, still visibly confused. nineteen nods and turns away, glancing behind her as she walks.
"goodbye." she says softly. will stares at her retreating figure before looking back down at his book. but he couldn't help but glance at her again as she turns around the corner. something was very... familiar about the girl.
nineteen presses herself against the side of the wall for a while, sad. she couldn't begin to describe what will had been seeing and feeling. she closes
her eyes painfully. nineteen takes a deep breath in when the three adults come back out. a man and woman exit out the door followed by owens. joyce byers and jim hopper.
nineteen turns away and lets out a sigh as she listens to the receding footsteps. then a door closes, and then owens is standing next to her.
"i'm glad you're concerned about him, nineteen, but," he hesitates as she looks up at him, tears already brewing in her eyes. he sighs. "c'mon. let's get you ready for testing." he states, softly grabbing her shoulders and steering her in the opposite direction.
mary meets them soon, and then leads nineteen away as owens makes his way outside for a second, on the second level balcony. nineteen looks over her shoulder as he holds his hand up in a wave.
-
nineteen grasps owen's hand tightly. they wait for the elevator to finally stop and then silently walk out with his assistant in tow. they walk down the hall before reaching the vault door. nineteen shudders at old memories. owens, sensing it, sets his hands on her shoulders and guides her in first.
"nineteen," patty greets, with a smile and a nod of her head.
"patty." dr. owens says, patting her on the back as he passes. she utters a 'sam' but it goes through one ear and out the other as nineteen stares through the glass windows, eyes wide and lips set in a firm line.
"afternoon, sir. m'aam." a scientist says and nineteen's eyesbrows draw together fearfully.
as owens speaks with the man that's going into the upside down, nineteen slides her hand out of owen's and walks to the glass window. she stares through them, her heart beating loudly. the door then slides open and he walks in, sending a nod to nineteen who watches him.
gas moves up through the bottom and moves around the man once the door closes. the opposite door opens and he steps out, walking to the right.
he stares at the slimy vines that are covering the hole. nineteen squeezes her eyes shut and lays her palms flat against the glass. she feels the heavy flow of her connection to the electric field around the lab go through her and she opens her eyes to see the area between her palms and the glass is glowing a bright blue. the man starts walking towards the opening in the wall. he holds up his blow torch and starts lighting up on the vines.
blood runs down her cheeks freely and nineteen wipes them away. she stares as he disappears slowly and her breathing increases heavily. "it's not safe yet." she says. "take him out." owens sighs.
"he just got in there." he says. she scowls and grits her teeth. "it's not safe."
owens takes that as a signal to get her out of there. if they didn't, she would most likely go into one of her 'tantrums' as everyone kindly nicknamed her bellicose arguments.
