VI. invisible

"We could be a beautiful, miracle, unbelievable Instead of just invisible"

When I arrive to calculus, I'm met with a smile from Noah. I grit my teeth at him, furious and giving him nothing but a glare.

"Are you okay?" He furrows his brows. "Never better." I huff, placing my Prada handbag down in front of my desk. It's my most recent promotional deal, my publicist got me a partnership with them. It's pretty good I guess, but I hate how whenever I go out now I have to be draped in products even going to school.

"Hey! Hawthorne! Is it true what Kassidy's been saying?" Tristan from the back of the class yells. "Which is what exactly?" I call back.

"That Richard Nelson handcuffed you to the bleachers and fucked you up the ass?" Someone else chimes in. The class is echoed with laughs, waiting for my reaction.

"And what's Nelson saying to all this?" I smirk back to all of them.

"He said you took it like a bitch and passed out." Someone says with a low laugh.

"Interesting... Well I can't say he's ever handcuffed me on the bleachers and done me up the ass, but last year when he tried to get with me his 3 inch dick certainly did not make me pass out." I shrug innocently.

"You seriously got with Richard Nelson?" Tristan gapes at me with a mocking laugh.

"Course she did. She's got with every guy in school, just wait til she starts making her way round teachers." Maja Thatchers laughs from the other side of the class. Jokes on you, I've already got with a teacher.

"Maja!" Noah booms at her angrily. Noah and Maja are twins, I mean they don't look similar at all and they have completely different personalities and friends.

"Careful Noah, her legs are literally spreading just looking at you." Maja taunts.

"No, my legs only spread for your Dad... Wait never mind, your Dad's too busy fucking 20 year old models." I frown sarcastically.

Her jaw drops as she stares at me in shock, I hear Noah chortle beside me.

"Least I have one in the first place. And at least my brother and I share one. Your whore of a Mom couldn't close her legs just like you." She fires back defensively.

"Yeah I guess the apple really doesn't fall far from the tree does it? Same goes for you i'm sure, your Mom got a boob job, so you did. Didn't you?" I jab.

Her cheeks glow red, knowing she only heard one person that, Kassidy. But she made the mistake of telling her in the locker rooms when I was close enough to overhear their whispers.

"I heard you got an F on that test. I guess this class must be hard for you, so many big numbers. All of them must remind you of your body count." She tuts.

"Yeah, and what's your body count again Virgin Mary?" I tease.

"You know like 20% of people have an STI. Which means you are bound to have like all of them at this point. I mean chlamydia, gonorrhoea, herpes, HPV, aids." Maja lists.

Meanwhile, our teacher just types on his computer ignoring our very public teasing argument. The rest of the class laugh and cheer when one of us says something particularly funny.

"Maja! That's quite enough. Spencer's STI's are none of our business." Mr Harrison finally speaks up, making the whole class burst out laughing and my cheeks glow red.

"I don't have an STI!" I intervene defensively.

"But if you did. You shouldn't be shamed. This is a safe space." My teacher announces, clearly enjoying the way everyone is laughing at his jokes.

"Well I don't." I finalise, slouching back in my seat.

"Defensive much?" Tristan calls out.

"No I just don't like it when rumours are spread about me." I snap at him.

"Spoken like a true STI patient." Maja perseveres.

"Well if I have STI's then better all check your Dad's cause I'm not joking when I say i've fucked half your Dad's." I announce.

"Spencer, you are a minor, if you are having sex with adults I legally have to report that." Mr Harrison says remorsefully.

"Are you asking questions about my personal sex life Mr Harrison? How dare you objectify my body like that? So degrading!" I accuse dramatically.

"You know what! Everyone put your notes away! I didn't think i'd need to do this with a class full of seniors but we're having a sex ed class today. You can have your calculus class when you're supposed to have health." Our teacher sighs.

Mr Harrison is not only a calculus teacher but also a health teacher, meaning in ninth grade he taught us all about sex. So for him to randomly decide to swap which of our classes we get today sort of makes sense.

Everyone huffs and rolls their eyes. "Thanks a lot Hawthorne. You and your loose pussy from being fucked by every man in sight has just cost us a valuable calculus lesson!" A guy taunts from the back.

Lots of people laugh and applaud his humour, the only ones who don't are the two people beside me. Even the teacher laughs.

"You gonna let him talk about me like that?" I ask our teacher in shock.

"Okay class. For this task, you're going into four groups of five." He completely ignores me.

Everyone begins rambling to choose their group before he interrupts, explaining that he'll be choosing for us.

"Miss Hawthorne. It has come to my attention you do not like a lot of people in this class?" Mr Harrison beckons me to stand up and come to the front.

"Anyone." I correct.

"Perfect. You don't like anyone. Now out of curiosity, who in this class likes Spencer. Even if just a little." The man asks.

Noah immediately places his hand up in the air. Avery follows him, placing her hand up. I can't tell if it's just pity or if she genuinely likes me.

"Really? Only two people? Nobody likes her even a slither?" Mr Harrison frowns.

This is not only embarrassing but also definitely a violation of every teacher code in the book.

A couple more hands raise. That's only 5 out of 20.

"Those of you who raised your hands, please come to the front... One by one look Spencer in the eyes and tell us why you raised your hand." He instructs.

A quiet girl up the back steps forward. "You have a good sense of style, last year you helped me pick out my prom dress. You were pretty nice." She shrugs.

"Great! That's a great start. You can sit down now. Everyone else join the line." Our teacher instructs. Everyone huffs and gets up to join the queue. "You're all going to tell us one thing you like about Spencer. I'm gonna judge and the two best get to be in her group, two worst have to be in her group." He concludes, telling everyone to go ahead.

Humiliation. This is just cruel.

"I like your makeup." One girl tells me.

"Your shoes are nice." Another person says.

"Your body is really nice to look at." A guy says.

"You're hot." Another guy says.

"You have a great skin care routine."

"You smell nice."

"Your hair is cute."

"Your skin is really clear."

"Your eyes are nice."

I start to pick up on a common theme here. My looks. People don't actually care about my personality and it shows.

"You can pull off any lipstick color."

"You have really cute nail designs."

"About a year ago you gave me the best head I've ever had at your place." Tristan tells me with a smirk on his face.

"Okay, i've heard better." Mr Harrison cringes.

It's not the fact that he said it, it's the way he said it. Last year we dated for six months, we never told anyone except our friends. One time he was at my place and we went down on each other. But he makes it sound as if I just blew him like any other day. Our relationship may not have lasted long but it meant something to me, and I thought it did to him too. But clearly not with how much he's been slut shaming me ever since we broke up. He's the only boyfriend I've ever really had. I mean, yeah my body count is like 12, but he was the best one, and more importantly, the first one.

"You're confident about yourself, I really respect that." Avery tells me when it's her turn. I smile genuinely at her for just about the first time.

Maja stares back at me. "Nope. Seriously can't think of one thing." She shrugs carelessly.

"Please try?" Our teacher hisses.

"She's... got... a great metabolism for all the dick she eats?" Is all Maja can fathom, making everyone laugh at her. She sits down like the others who have already gone and lets more people step forward.

"You gave me answers for a test like three years ago."

"The school uniform looks pretty good on you."

"Your instagram posts are pretty hot i guess?"

"You're really skinny."

So I have my looks, the things that I have people control for me like my instagram and style, and things i've done years ago. That's all that's good about me.

Next is the last person of all, Noah. I fold my arms insecurely after the last one. I genuinely can't tell if that girl actually thought I was skinny or if she was teasing me because I'm not.

I try not to look at Noah, anticipating him saying something about my looks.

"You're really funny, even though you pretend not to be. And you're incredibly talented, but you never let anyone see that because you're like completely unfazed by how much talent you have. You're kind, even when you're pretending to be this cold hearted grinch, you're really kind deep down. You've got a cute laugh, it's so contagious and you can't help but just laugh too. You always just seem to light up whatever room you walk into, even when you're in a mood. You're also like so smart, at so many things you're just so intelligent. You also like never take any of the shit these people give you, you just fire something hilarious back at them and act like it doesn't even affect you... And not to like objectify your looks like every other person in this room has, but you're so gorgeous. Just all the time- You don't even notice it but you're so pretty.." Noah rambles, clearly getting nervous.

My cheeks are red, I can see it in his glasses. His cheeks are flushed too once he realizes how much he's rambled. Everyone in the class watches in silence.

"Yeah, I think you win that one. Group one is as follows: Spencer, Noah, Avery, Maja and Tristan." Mr Harrison interrupts our moment.

He leaves us to ourselves as he selects the next groups.

"You didn't... mean all that, did you?" I fold my arms insecurely, whispering to Noah.

"Course I did Spencer." He answers sincerely. "I'd like to clarify, I did too. You may be a total bitch, but your head is truly the greatest i've ever had." Tristan tells me affectionately.

"Wish I could say the same back but I remember the words 'just wait a minute, i swear i'll find it' followed by you proceeding to not find it." I smirk in response.

His cheeks glow red and he looks ready to kill me. We both know what I said wasn't true, but he's embarrassed.

"Okay class. These groups will be your family for the next three months, and no that's not me trying to be corny, I mean literally. There are four groups of 5. Each group consists of a Mother, a Father, a young child, a teenager and one other person who can be whatever you want. You can work this out on your own. I am going to give each of your families some issues to work through, I want you and your families to meet up together outside of school and work to settle these issues how you would if these were your real families. This is gonna help with parenting and such as. Each group is going to get workshops on the following topics: contraceptives, STI's, teen pregnancy, abortions, healthy relationships, misogyny, sexual orientation and consent. If you fail to attend any of these you can write a 10,000 word essay instead regarding the topic you miss. At the end of these three months, your families will be expected to present to the class every issue you encountered and how you overcame it." Mr Harrison explains to us.

Every single person in the class huffs, sighs, yells and complains.

"Enough! Quiet! You will have this period to decide on your families. I will come around every group to approve everything and give you your dilemmas." He tells us.

Our teacher starts at the opposite side of the room, meaning we have ages before he gets to us.

"For the record. I am not doing this shit. I'll do the essays if I have to. I'm not humiliating myself." Tristan steps back with his hands up high.

"Yeah, fuck the essays. I'm not doing any of this." Maja groans.

"But Maja, Dad will kill you if he finds out you're not doing school projects." Noah hisses to his twin.

"I think i'll kill myself before being anyone's Mother." I scoff.

"Depends, will you let me call you Mommy?" Tristan raises a brow with a smirk.

"Can you stop being such a perv for like a minute?" I ask sarcastically.

He raises his hand in surrender with a grin.

We sit in silence for 10 minutes before Mr Harrison reaches us.

"Okay, what are all your roles?" He asks us excitedly. "Look, sir, I don't mean to be disrespectful here. But if you get a woody out of watching teenagers role-play, think again because i'm not doing this." I sneer.

"Ignoring that comment because I can't be bothered writing a report. It is not optional, in fact, it's worth 80% of your final grade." Mr Harrison decides.

"But sir, health class isn't graded." Noah interferes politely.

"Guess again Thatcher, cause now it is." Mr Harrison says proudly.

We all sigh. None of us want to do this.

"Since you can't decide, I will... Maja, you're the Mom. Tristan, you're the Dad. Avery you're the 12 year old daughter. Spencer, you're the 16 year old daughter. Noah, you're Spencer's best friend." He tells us.

"Here's your dilemmas. The Father, recently found himself drunk at a friend's birthday party, he was so drunk he made out with that friend at the end of the night. He is married with kids and thought he was straight but now is unsure, because he liked the kiss. He loves his wife and kids and doesn't know what to do." Mr Harrison decides.

I burst out laughing and look to Tristan, expecting to find him looking furious, instead he looks almost nervous? Nobody else notices, but he's looking down and biting his cheek.

"The Mother, has noticed that her husband has been cheating, it leads her to start experimenting with different drugs and alcohol. She comes home most days drunk or high and her kids are starting to get scared. They think she might be addicted but don't know how to talk to her about it." He decides.

Maja scoffs and leans back in her seat, avoiding eye contact from others.

"The 12 year old has a crush on a boy she considers somewhat of a friend. The boy likes her back, only issue is that his brother also likes her, and she likes the brother. She doesn't know who to choose and is worried that getting with one will ruin her relationship with the other."

Avery furrows her brows, suddenly looking nervous and embarrassed. Why is nobody laughing, all of these are ridiculous and completely unrealistic.

"The best friend's parents are getting a divorce, he is taking it badly. It is making him worry that relationships never work out, he is also in love with the best friend he's had since he was young, he doesn't want to tell her this incase she gets uncomfortable or thinks he's like all the other boys who hit on her. He has liked her for a while and doesn't know what to do."

Noah adjusts himself and I almost catch his eyes on me for a moment.

"And finally... The teenager, is in a toxic relationship with someone older, nobody knows about it and over time she starts to realize it's wrong. The relationship is making her doubt her self worth. Her family are beginning to notice and she's pushing them away."

I feel a shiver climb my spine. I look to my teacher. I don't know about anyone else, but that was weirdly realistic in some ways. Does he know about me and Mr Jenkins?

"Later on you can start to experiment with various other elements such as divorces, unplanned pregnancy, arguing, abortions, misogyny. Whatever you want." Mr Harrison smiles.

"Now if you do not meet outside of school at least once a week, I will know. I want you to document it and I will look over it to make sure you did." He finalises, walking away.

We all sit in silence for a couple moments once our teacher has left, reflecting everything for a moment. I personally am either scared Mr Harrison knows about my relationship with my gym teacher, or scared that he's a creepily good psychic.

This is just fantastic, I have to spend time with these people outside of school now, as if it wasn't bad enough to actually know them.

"So Maja is a junkie, Tristan takes it up the ass, Avery is a whore, Noah's parents don't love each other, and i'm fucking an old man?" I speak up with a laugh.

Everyone laughs a little at the sheer stupidity of it all.
