Chapter 5

1941, a small city in France

Sometimes, you just never see what is coming until it's too late. Even a picture perfect evening like this one can be destroyed the next morning.

The weather that evening was a bit chilly, but it felt nice nevertheless. The two boys walk down the road, wondering about what's to come next. The expected, the unexpected, the painful decisions, and the painful truth. As we know, time can heal, but it can also hurt, it wounds, it kills, everything and everyone. Death is inevitable, even with the immortals, there's always a loophole with nature. There's always a way out of living forever.

"So where are we going?" Remington asks.

"You'll see soon," Everest says kicking a small rock that was in their path.

He reaches for Remington's hand a shy smile on his face. Remington looks down and grabs Everest's hand noticing that he seemed quite anxious. They walked for a while talking about the things they'd do when this is all over. Whatever was on their minds spilled out. They just appreciated each others presence. Everything was nice and calm.

"You never told me that you knew your way around here." Remington comments.

"I was raised in the area, I didn't have many good memories in this place but it was my home for the first twenty-two years of my life. I come back every once in a while to check out how much it's changed here," Everest says.

They walked for a few more minutes before stopping. Everest lets go of his hand and opens the gate, he holds it open so Remington could enter behind him.

"The last place I'd expect you to take me is a cemetery," Remington chuckles.

"I know someone who was buried here," Everest sighs.

"Oh, would you mind if I asked who?"

"My mom," Everest says, any sort of happiness left him when he said that, "it's okay though, I mean she was one of the nicest people that I knew, but I never would have wanted her to see me like this."

"We're you ever ashamed of being a vampire?" Remington asks.

"Not particularly, I'm used to what I am now. I was just the worst version of myself back then. It's nothing I ever would have wanted her to see."

Everest spots her grave, he walks towards it his heartbeat beginning to fasten. His fingers run over her headstone, no matter how much he denies it, he misses her.

Seeing his loved ones die, it was just a part of being what he is. He had to accept that. It was really hard to go through, especially at first which is why he never wanted to be involved with humans. It's not like he'd be able to stick around long enough for them to pass away. He could only stay in the same place for a few years.

Remington put an arm around Everest's shoulder, he looked down at the name imprinted on the headstone. It seemed a little familiar, but then again, it could've been someone else that he was thinking of.

"Do you need some time alone?" Remington asks looking at Everest.

Everest shakes his head. He looks up at Remington, "I would rather you stay."

"Are you going to be okay, Ever?" Remington asks.

He couldn't see Everest's face as he hid it very well. He could only imagine what he's feeling. He's lost many people himself, whether it be by abandoning them or by death.

"Yeah, I mean I shouldn't be upset about her death anymore. At least I don't think I should. Its been a couple of centuries, I- I should be over it by now.," Everest says quietly drying his teary eyes.

"Ever, it's okay to be sad. She seemed like such a great woman, I understand why you would miss her still. She's important to you, after all, she's your mother," Remington says softly.

He glanced at Everest's face. The younger boy's expression was absolutely heartbreaking. His eyes were watery and it almost seemed as if he just wanted to cry, but he was holding back. Remington knew that within the two years of knowing Everest, he rarely showed any negative emotions. It was rare to see him cry, or see him stressed. It made Remington wonder if maybe he was holding back right now because he was scared to show him how he felt.

"I loved her, ya know. She was one of the only people who could make me feel safe," Everest sighs, a few tears fall as he looks up at Remington, "you make me feel that way too. Being with you, it's just about the safest I've felt since she died."

Remington nods drying Everest's tears. With their height difference it was quite easy for Everest to lay his head against Remingtons chest. He was just standing there in his boyfriends arms trying to calm himself. Noticing Everest was tense, Remington runs his fingers through the smaller boys hair humming a soft tune to calm him. Nothing can bring back his mom, but if Remington can help him feel just as safe and loved as she made him feel, he'd do whatever it takes.

"I love you Everest, always and forever." He says holding Everest tight.

"I love you too," Everest says, "always and forever."

The depressing aura nearly washed away. It was more calming than anything now.

It's moments like these, that should be cherished. A time where the trees are silent, and the only noise you can hear is the birds making small chirps in the background. It seemed like nothing could ruin it. The perfect evening doesn't last forever, neither does the perfect life.

The sun had already started to set a couple of hours before they arrived, but the street lights illuminated a soft light across the graveyard. Remington looks down at Everest noticing that he was starting to get tired.

"Ever, we should probably leave soon," Remington suggests.

Everest nods, knowing that if they were to stay too much longer he'd probably just pass right out. He was quite tired, and since we was at Sebastian's place he could barely keep down any of the blood bags they gave him, it was a side effect of the poison, he knew that. He was starting to become much weaker because of it.

He didn't want to tell Remington this, he didn't want him to worry. What Gemma gave him just took away the pain, it just made it bearable. It didn't make it easier to eat, so he pretty much felt starved for the past few days. Not to mention the fact that the poison had made him crave blood even more than before, but he couldn't even have any.

"Everest? are you okay?"

"I'm just tired, that's all," that was a lie. Remington knew that too.

He felt starved. He felt scared. He was terrified that something would go wrong, he didn't want to die. Not right now at least. Things were just starting to get better for him, and things could only really go downhill from there.

"Everest, I know things aren't exactly great right now. So if you ever need to talk about anything, you can talk to me."

Everest nods, "I'm okay, Rem, I promise."

The walk back to Sebastians house was nearly silent after that. The only noises they heard were the birds chirping and the leaves crunching under their feet. It wasn't really awkward, the silence was quite comforting.

They reached the house, seeing the lights were on they assumed the others were awake. Remington enters with Everest following behind. They head to the guest room just sitting on the bed next to each other. All they did for the next half hour was talk before calling it quits for the night.

The next morning, Remington and Emerson would have to leave and assist Gemma. Hopefully they would came back within the day bringing the cure with them, because they still couldn't be a hundred percent sure how long he had or if something would go wrong. With their luck something will definitely go wrong.
