Chapter 3
1941, Paris, France
Emerson has been very busy the last few years with his art business and helping take care of his girlfriend Mazikeen's child. Maze was turned into a vampire just after her daughter was born, her last husband died not long after she became pregnant so she was all alone. She was just a single mom up until she met Emerson.
Emerson he's usually the type to be alone but he made an exception and allowed Maze and her daughter to live with him. At first it was just because she had nowhere else to go. Now, he loves her, and he loves her child. He treats her child as if she was his own, and that is why things worked out.
"Emerson, can you check on Isobelle for me?" Maze asks.
"Of course," Emerson says, he leaves the kitchen and peeks into Isobelle's bedroom. She was still fast asleep. Her black hair covered her pretty little face.
Emerson found himself lucky in these kinds of moments, he has a girlfriend who he wants to marry, he has a kid who even though she isn't his, he loves her more than anything else in the world.
Things between him and Maze were quite awkward in the beginning. She was merely a women who needed help, nothing more and nothing less. Even when Mazikeen was ready to leave Isobelle loved Emerson and he cared about her quite a bit.
She's five years old now, as far as she knew, Emerson was apart of her family, he's been there for almost all her life. She has barely any idea that they're vampires and as much as they want to keep it that way, once she's older, they won't be able to keep it a secret why her mothers not getting any older, or the fridge seems to be full of blood bags.
Emerson gently moves the hair out of Isobelle's face. As much as he wanted to protect her, he had no way of guaranteeing her safety.
There was a knock on the front door just moments later. Emerson looks at Isobelle one last time before leaving her bedroom.
"Emerson your brother is here, he says it urgent." Maze says.
"I'll be there in a moment," Emerson says heading towards the front door.
Emerson steps into the doorway inviting Remington into the house. He thought it'd be Sebastian, especially since he lives much closer. With the way Remington looked it was quite obvious something was wrong.
"Remington? I thought you were still in the states?" Emerson asks.
"I was, but Emerson, I need help," Remington sighs.
"What's up?" He asks
"There was another hunter attack," Remington says.
"We're you hurt?" Emerson questions concerned.
"No, I'm fine, it's Everest who got attacked, I just need to find someone who can help him," Remington replies.
"Is he with you?"
"He's staying with Seb and Kailah right now, I don't want him to be alone but I can't take him anywhere else."
"How long do we have?" Emerson asks.
"About six days, but I don't know for sure. Erin was a fairly new Vampire at the time and Everest has been around a couple hundred years. So if his age has something to do with this, we may have more time to seek help."
"We saw how much Erin suffered when she was poisoned," Emerson says, "I hope Everest won't feel it as much as she did."
"I hope so too," Remington sighs.
"Maze, I'll try to be back in a few days," Emerson says looking back at his girlfriend.
"Em, I can help you guys," Mazikeen says.
"Isobelle needs you to be there with her, but right now I have to go help him and Everest."
"You're right, just make sure you're home in time for her birthday."
"I will, I promise," Emerson sighs and looks back at Remington, "I don't believe you've met Isobelle yet, I've been holding back but I think it's about time she finally gets to know you."
Remington and Sebastian both knew of this human child Emerson had. It seemed very unlikely of him to ever become a father especially a human, as he barely even wanted to be involved with others. He only seeks for love, but they didn't think it'd come in the form of a family. It was weird at first, but when they met up for Christmas last year, Emerson showed a little photograph of him with Maze and Isobelle. It all began to make sense. They were happy.
He was always so protective of Isobelle at the start, sometimes he didn't even allow Maze around her. Mazikeen was a new vampire when she found Emerson and Isobelle wasn't even a year old at the time. She had to fight not to kill her own daughter at first. She was just learning how to control her blood lust.
Emerson brings Remington into Isobelle's bedroom. He gently shakes her awake. Isobelle woke only within a few seconds. She sat up and rubbed her eyes before looking up at Emerson.
"Good morning sunshine," Emerson says a small smile on his face.
Isobelle smiles back at him. She gets out of bed and stands in front of Emerson extending her arms so he could pick her up. Remington stands by the doorframe a small smile on his face as he watched.
Emerson picks her up, her tiny body resting on his hip. Isobelle looks around and notices Remington.
"Emmy? Who's that?" Isobelle asks.
"That's Remington, he's your uncle."
Emerson sets Isobelle down. She runs towards Remington a big smile on her face. These are the times Remington wished he could be that young again. He wanted nothing more than to be rid of this pain he held after being in war and the people he's killed. He wanted to be that naive little kid he was back in the 16th century, when he was actually human.
A part of him wanted to be human, but another part of him came to terms with who he is. He couldn't let himself go, at least not yet. If there was any chance he could be human, he had no idea how he would feel taking that chance.
He was taken aback when Isobelle wrapped her arms around him. He obviously didn't realize how much his expression changed until he quit spacing out. He never noticed that his smile disappeared or that the more he thought about what he missed out on life his eyes would begin flooding with tears.
Remington sighs and looks down at Isobelle. She was hugging Remington, trying her best to make him feel better. She seemed so innocent and naive, so caring. It was quite obvious that Emerson and Maze raised her well.
"You look sad," Isobelle says looking up at Remington.
"I'm okay," Remington says softly. He used his hands to wipe away any tears that had already fallen.
"We should get going soon," Emerson says looking at Remington.
"Where are you going?" Isobelle asks letting go of Remington.
"I'm not quite sure, I'm going to help your uncle out," Emerson says, "but I'll try my best to be back sometime this week."
"So you'll be here for my birthday, right?" Isobelle asks.
"I'm sure I will."
"What about Remy, will he be here?" She asks.
"He can join us if he'd like dear, but he doesn't live in the area. We're going to be gone for a little bit so I'm sure he'd like to get home when we're done."
Isobelle runs up to Emerson giving him a hug. Emerson hugs her back. He knows they have to get going, knowing that Rem would never forgive himself if Everest died. Emerson's quite sure of that.
"I don't want you to leave..." Isobelle says.
"I'll be home soon, but you can spend time with your mother until I return. She would love to spend time with you," Emerson suggests.
"I love you," Isobelle mumbles.
"I love you too," Emerson says softly.
Moments later Remington and Emerson left. Emerson takes Remington to his car and they begin driving.
"Are you okay? Emerson asks.
"I don't know, it just scares me thinking that he's suffering right now... I know how much Erin suffered and I don't want Everest to feel that way..:"
"We'll help him Rem," Emerson says glancing at his older brother.
Remington sighs wiping his tears eyes. He didn't want to let himself cry, he thought he'd be weak if he did and he didn't want to feel that way, he just tried not to give in. At that point any and all negative thoughts he could possibly have flooded into his head. Erin, the hunter, anyone he's killed, their father, what happened to Everest. Anything that he considered negative came to mind.
Emerson looked over at Remington. He watched his older brother just sit there his body visibly shaking as he tried not to begin sobbing. Emerson felt helpless, he knew what Remington must have been thinking about and he knew he couldn't just promise him it'd be okay, especially if he doesn't know if it will.
"I- I'm sorry..." Remington mumbles.
"It's okay, I know you're close to Everest," Emerson says. He places one of his hands on Remington's.
Remington nods and looks out the window, the trees they passed looked blurry and the sky never looked so dull. The car ride was depressing, the only noise being the heavy breathing that came from Remington. Emerson just had to try to focus on the road, he could only talk, he couldn't physically calm his brother.
It was only half an hour later that Emerson finally pulled into someone's driveway. Remington didn't know where they were but if it was someone Emerson could trust then he could probably trust them as well. Emerson is the kind of person that trusts very few people but always trusts the right ones.
"Where are we?"
"We're visiting one of my little witch friends. If anyone knows how to help, it's her."
Emerson opens the car door and exits. He signals for Remington to come with him. Emerson walks to the front door with Remington close behind. Emerson knocks on the door.
"Thank you for doing all of this," Remington says looking at Emerson.
Emerson puts a hand on Remingtons shoulder. It was only moments later that the front door opened. Now, they had to hope they would be able to find out how to help Everest.
