8. ** I Saw You **

I couldn't decide on whether to be pissed or grateful. I opened my eyes to find my room drenched in blinding sunlight, not the usual soft nudge of dawn. I jolted upright to look out my window, finding the sun hanging high in the sky. I couldn't believe how long I had slept. Levi must have ordered someone to cover my shift on watch, since I had been next in our rotation.

When I finally fully woke up, I was honestly fairly confused. I hadn't fallen asleep here, but I vaguely remembered being carried to bed, not much else. All I knew was, at that very moment, how incredibly loud my stomach was complaining; louder than the words babbling through my brain. I was ravenously hungry from sleeping through breakfast, and my need for food only worsened when delicious scents wafted into my room from the kitchen, teasing my nose with its glorious aroma.

I quickly dressed myself for the day and ran my fingers through my bed head. I had barely brushed the door knob with my fingers when it pulled away from my grasp. Startled, I looked up to find Levi locking his gaze with mine; his beautiful gray eyes glistening from the sunlight that flooded into the hall.

"You're awake," he murmured.

"You seem surprised. Why didn't you wake me? I've already slept through half the da-"

My legs faltered backwards as I was caught off guard. Levi reached for my face, plunging his lips into mine for a desperate kiss. Rather taken aback, I pulled away slightly, and awkwardly stuttered, "Wh-what - whoa- what was that for?"

As if he had done nothing out of the ordinary, Levi glanced down at me calmly before nonchalantly inviting me to join him in the dining hall, where everyone had already gathered for lunch. I stood in the doorway for a moment, still wondering what the hell just happened. He wasn't one to just randomly plant passionate kisses on me out of nowhere. I could barely brush his hand with mine in front of our squad without him suddenly becoming clumsy or embarrassed. But I shook it off and decided to just enjoy the taste of him that lingered on my lips. I followed him down the hall, recalling how hungry I was, as I became eager once more to devour whatever meal was beckoning me so temptuously.

Once we reached the dining room, I acknowledged the greeting from my squad and pulled my chair out from beside Historia. On my left was Levi, who sat at the head of the table, already sipping tea from his small porcelain cup. And to my surprise, I looked up to find Eren sitting across from me.

Levi didn't even wake me when Eren came to?

"Eren! Good to see you're awake! How are you feeling?"

Eren seemed to nervously avoid eye contact with me and quickly mumbled, "F-fine- I'm fine."

I paused, glancing over at Levi, who just stared at me from over his tea cup. My eyes wandered over to Mikasa, then Armin, and slowly around the table. Did no one else notice his demeanor had suddenly changed? I cleared my throat slightly, hoping Eren would pay attention to the concern on my face. His eyes flashed up once, followed by an uneasy double-take.

The moment his radiant green eyes locked on mine, a strange, icy sensation grew in the pit of my stomach, engulfing me from the inside out. The fear in his eyes gripped my soul tightly until I blinked, breaking my catatonic stare. I shook my head slightly and grabbed my midsection, trying to recover from whatever had suddenly possessed me.

Staring down at the food I had craved so terribly just moments before, I found that the sight of it was now utterly repulsive. My mind was racing, as I was absolutely baffled by the effect of Eren's glance. I inhaled deeply before scooting my chair back and excusing myself from the table.

I felt Eren's eyes follow me out of the room, accompanied by Levi's. I needed air...and fast. I reached for the handle to open the front door but was abruptly pulled backwards into a strong embrace.

"Oi, Jean is covering watch for you. You don't need to-"

Levi's words abruptly stopped when he noticed how my eyes were clouded by fear and confusion, locked on something behind him. He turned to find Eren peering around the corner, visibly uncomfortable. Levi studied my face again, then rapidly turned and marched powerfully toward Eren before grabbing him by his shirt. With a forceful tug, he pulled Eren down to meet his height. I could hear Levi growling low warnings to Eren through gritted teeth, but couldn't understand a word he was saying.

I immediately rushed over to break Levi's livid grasp. Placing myself between the two, I held out my hands, pleading for them to take a step back. Everything was happening so fast, and I didn't even know what that "everything" was.

"Wait- Levi-- He didn't do anything! At least, he didn't mean to- I don't even know what just happened. Hell, I didn't even know he was awake! Just-- shit! I need some air!"

My fists met my head in desperation and slightly tugged at my hair, before I turned to escape outside. A few heated words were exchanged between Eren and Levi behind the door, but I didn't stay to listen. I shuffled quickly away from the cabin, gradually regaining the feeling of normalcy again.

My steps were soon matched when I heard the ground crunching below another set of boots. With a sigh, I turned and unexpectedly met Eren's eyes again, and only Eren's.

"(Y/N)... I- we need to talk."

Looking up at the young boy, who we all pledged to protect with our lives, I nodded hesitantly. He must have said something incredibly convincing to Levi, seeing as he had come alone. Only moments prior, I had to stop Levi from beating the shit out of him.

I continued walking, side-by-side with Eren now, as he tried to figure out how to phrase his sentences correctly. He fumbled over his words and kept rubbing the back of his neck nervously. I was becoming rather agitated, wishing this kid would just spit it out already, before my anxiety had a chance to devour me whole.

"(Y/N), I- I've been having these weird visions lately. Although they feel more like memories, but they're not my memories... It's strange, I know, but I don't really know what they all mean and -"

"Eren," I said, stopping in front of him, grabbing his arms in frustration. "Just tell me what's so goddamn important."

"I saw you," Eren boomed, suddenly switching from a rambling mess to a stern, almost intimidating voice.

I dropped my hands and stepped back, giving him a puzzled stare. "Okay..."

He drew in a deep breath and paused, before bringing his eyes back to meet mine. Once again, his stare filled me with absolute fear.

"(Y/N), I saw you... All...of you. I saw what Viktor did to you..."

My eyes widened, and I fought to keep my legs from giving out. My heart was beating so loud that I was sure Eren could hear it. I clenched my jaw and squeezed my fists tightly, fighting against the overwhelming need to crumble to the ground. Viktor was dead; I had to keep reminding myself of this. I killed that bastard with my own hands! Yet even in death, he haunted me relentlessly. I was so confused and scared and angry and embarrassed that I wasn't able to fully comprehend much of anything else said. So I just stood before Eren in silence, remaining as strong as I could.

"I'm sorry (Y/N), really I am. I informed Captain Levi about the vision when I woke up, but he advised me not to mention anything about it to you... that it would be too traumatic...and I agreed with him completely on that. But, the way you reacted at the table back there, I felt like-"

"Eren, please..." I shuddered, begging him to stop talking.

"Wait, listen (Y/N). I said I told Captain Levi about it, but... I didn't tell him everything..."

I looked up at Eren, rather perplexed. I knew he had more to say, but I dreaded hearing whatever would follow.

"I also saw Viktor talking to someone. I don't know exactly who, but all I can recall is them arguing over you, and threatening to keep something secret- something about needing blood from-"

"(Y/N)! EREN! Get back to the cabin! NOW!"

Eren was inconveniently cut off by Jean's sudden shouts of alarm. Without hesitation, my feet propelled me forward as I sprinted back toward the cabin, with Eren following close behind. Fearing the worst, I mentally searched for where the closest weapon would be. But once we burst back inside, we found everyone silently gathered together in the middle of the room. I cautiously wandered in closer, holding my gaze on Levi, who was visibly troubled by a note held tightly in his grasp.

Standing beside him, her face still hidden under her hood, was Nifa, a member of Hange's Squad. Her presence here couldn't be a good thing, and by the looks of it, she had come to deliver some bad news.
