BLOOD IN THE WATER
BLOOD IN THE WATER
❛He knew that when he kissed this girl,
and forever wed his unutterable visions to
her perishable breath, his mind would never
ramp again like the mind of a God.❜

❦
BEHIND EVERY GREAT King, there is an even greater Queen. She is the backbone to the King's reign, the very thing that keeps everything in line for him without ever being asked to. She never receives thanks for her actions, but does everything she's told with little complaint. She smiles in the face of his enemies in order to gain access to their secrets, and she sings the Executioner's Song when those enemies have outrun their use. She is the beginning, she is the middle, and she will always be the end.
The King notices the tasks his Queen does for his reign, but only ever acknowledges them silently — never aloud however, to make sure the Queen remains in her place. He knows his Queen is just as eager to make it out of this hell as he is, and he knows she will give everything she has to him in order to make that happen.
But it has to be more than that,
right? There must be more to it.
The King must love the Queen
in order to keep her by His side.
The Queen must love the King in
order to devote Her all to his reign.
The problem is, Thomas Shelby claims to have never loved a woman other than his mother and his Aunt Pol. He claims his ambitions are far too high to be focused on silly things like love, and that women will only slow him down in the end. How can he reach for the stars if he's focused on some silly girl from Small Heath? He can't, he's convinced himself, so he won't go chasing what he can't keep. He must focus on getting his family out of dirty Small Heath so that they can finally say goodbye to the smoke and ash forever.
On the other hand,
however, we must consider ...
Thomas Shelby is a liar.
One so deep down to his bones, he can't even tell his right emotions from his wrong ones — and oh!, he refuses to express any of them. So what if Juliet Dubois still brings tiny butterflies to his stomach, even after he's back from the war and has declared himself free of love? So what if every time he catches those doe eyes of hers staring at him, he has to look away in fear of getting too lost and feeling too much at once? The girl who managed to claw her way so deeply into his skin that he can't shake her no matter how hard he tries to.
But he must stand tall, you see. Because Thomas Shelby is aiming for the top, and he doesn't have time for petty things like pretty women who own neat tailoring shops.
But then again ...
... who is the hungry King,
without his devoted Queen?
