Chapter 4: Small Talk With A Side Of Cheese Sticks

The growling in Sai-Rin's stomach reminded her of the fact that she hadn't eaten since before she left for the beach. Husk's ears perked up. "You hungry, Sai-Rin?" he asked. Sai-Rin nodded in response. "I've got just the thing." Husk replied, lifting her up and sitting her down at the bar area nearby. Sai-Rin got comfortable on the seat, glancing around at the place he'd taken her to.

It looked to be some kind of hotel lobby. Sai-Rin couldn't really get a crystal clear view because of having to constantly brush her long, untamed bangs out of her face. Sai-Rin hoped she could get a hold of some bobby pins as soon as possible to get them out of the way. The smell of something delicious brought her out of her thoughts. Sai-Rin's mouth watered as Husk brought out a little basket of what looked like fried bread sticks. There was a hint of a smile on his face, despite his gruff demeanor.

Husk walked out of the bar and pulled up a chair next to Sai-Rin. "Go on." he said, gesturing to the basket. "Dig in." Sai-Rin took some of the food and bit into it. Her turquoise eyes widened as she recognized the taste, and felt cheese gushing into her mouth. "Mozzarella sticks!" she exclaimed happily.

Husk smirked, taking a mozzarella stick out of the basket. "Judging by your reaction, I'd say you really like them, same as I do." Sai-Rin nodded enthusiastically, finishing the cheese stick and taking out another. In a few moments, the both of them had finished off the basket. Sai-Rin leaned back in her chair, her hunger satisfied. They sat in silence for a few moments before Husk spoke up.

"So, what happened to you?" Sai-Rin tilted her head to the side, unsure of what he meant. Husk leaned his chin on one of his paws. "C'mon, how'd you end up in a place like this?" Sai-Rin sighed. "Well, before I woke up here, I remember going to a friend of mine's beach party. I don't know what I was thinking since I can't swim worth crap, but I went since my crush was there. At one point, we went to go jump off a rock, but the guy I had a crush on let go at the last second, and I..."

Sai-Rin stopped talking, the memories coming back. Husk put a paw on her hand, a concerned look on his face. "I fell in the water. My friends didn't make any effort to get me out of there. They..." Tears fell from Sai-Rin's eyes. "They watched me drown, Husk!" Sai-Rin buried her face in her arms, laying her head down on the bar.

Husk gently patted her back in an attempt to comfort her. Sai-Rin stopped crying for a moment, slowly put the pieces together and realizing what his question meant. Going to that beach party, drowning while her friends watched, ending up in a strange red hued city, being cared for by a humanoid cat, it all added up. Sai-Rin was dead, and somehow, she'd ended up in Hell.
