Chapter 14: Fish To Fish Talk
The only other demon in the hotel besides Husk that Sai-Rin considered a close friend was Baxter. He usually liked being alone to focus on his scientific work, but he tried his best to have time for Sai-Rin. "What are you up to this time, Bax?" Sai-Rin inquired as she watched Baxter hard at work on another experiment, the bulb on his head illuminating the dark room. "I'm glad you asked, Blue!" Baxter said. "I'm working on a little potion that will give you the ability to switch between a tail and legs at will!" Sai-Rin gasped in surprise.
"Really? You'd do that for me?" Baxter winked. "Of course, Blue! You're the only demon I at least tolerate in this place!" Sai-Rin laughed lightly, blowing her bangs out of her face. "Well, it sure beats living in a bucket." There was a brief moment of silence before Sai-Rin spoke up.
"Um...Baxter?" she asked. Baxter turned around to face her. "Yes?" Sai-Rin hesitated on how to word the question she was about to ask. "How..." She mumbled the last part.
Baxter raised an eyebrow. "Can you speak up a bit, Blue? Didn't quite catch that last part." Sai-Rin blurted out the question. "How did you die?" Baxter froze up at Sai-Rin's question, his eyes widening slightly. Sai-Rin could see him shuddering slightly as his breathing quickened.
"I-It's ok if you don't want to talk about it!" Sai-Rin said quickly. "I shouldn't have even brought it u-" "Sinking ship..." Sai-Rin stopped talking as Baxter interrupted her. "What...?" she softly asked. Baxter sank down in a chair, putting his face in his hands as the memories came back.
Sai-Rin managed to lift herself out of her bucket and crawl over to Baxter, resting her head in his lap. "It's ok..." she whispered. Sai-Rin suddenly felt a drop of water land on her cheek. She looked up to see Baxter crying. He hadn't bothered to take his goggles off, so they were completely flooded. "A-April 14, 1912...Sh-Ship hit an iceberg..." Baxter whimpered through tears.
"It was c-cold...a-and dark..." Baxter laid his forehead against Sai-Rin's hair, breaking down in sobs. "C-Can't breathe...Can't yell for h-help...Can't s-swim..." Sai-Rin comfortingly rubbed his back, realizing that Baxter's death wasn't too different from hers. Finally, she lifted her head up and pulled herself onto Baxter's lap before hugging him. "Shh...It's alright now, Bax..." Sai-Rin whispered.
"I know what it's like..." Sai-Rin could feel her own eyes welling up with tears. "To be underwater and completely helpless..." Sai-Rin finally let silent tears fall as she heard a muffled sob from Baxter and felt his arms wrapping tightly around her body. "Hey, hey...It's ok now..." Sai-Rin mumbled. She felt Baxter's grip on her loosening and his cries turning to soft whimpers.
Sai-Rin gently lifted Baxter off of her shoulder and took his goggles off. The poor fish had cried himself to sleep. Sai-Rin sighed, laying a nearby blanket over Baxter's shoulders and crawling back inside her bucket. "He must've really needed that..." Sai-Rin mumbled to herself as she too began to doze off.
