Lynn felt a bit more settled after a conversation with Nathaniel, but there was still a lingering unease in the back of her mind. Sweet Amoris was far from ordinary anyway, she knew that much from her previous school. Still, the morning was crisp, and she tried to focus on the positives as she made her way through the school building.
She quickly spotted Rosalya in the hallway, her snowy hair cascading over her shoulders as she rummaged through her locker. Rosalya looked up and smiled as Lynn approached.
"Hey, Lynn! You look like you have something on your mind." Rosalya noticed, like she always did.
"Just the usual..." Lynn replied with a small shrug. "How about you?"
"Same old." Rosalya said, leaning against her locker. "Although, something weird happened this morning. I was in the bathroom, and I swear, the faucet turned on by itself. I thought maybe I accidentally bumped it, but... it was strange."
Lynn raised an eyebrow. "That is weird. Did anything else happen?"
Rosalya shook her head. "No, just that. I guess it was nothing."
Before Lynn could say anything more, the bell rang, signaling the start of first period. They exchanged quick goodbyes and headed off to class.
History class was always a bit of a mixed bag. Mr. Faraize tried his best, but the students often took advantage of his gentle nature. Lynn entered the classroom, and, as she took her seat, caught a glimpse of Mattie in the back of the classroom. He was scribbling something in his notebook again, his brow furrowed in concentration. As she watched, she noticed a small, odd ripple in the air near him, almost as if the room itself was reacting to his presence. It was subtle, but it made Lynn’s curiosity about him grow even stronger. Before she could dwell on it, Mr Faraize entered the classroom.
"Good morning, everyone." Mr. Faraize said softly, though it did little to quiet the chatter in the room. He cleared his throat, adjusting his glasses nervously. "Today, we'll be discussing the events leading up to World War I. If you could all open your textbooks to page 84..."
As Lynn reached for her textbook, she suddenly noticed something strange. The book wasn't where she left it. Instead, it was halfway across her desk, as if it had been nudged. She blinked, wondering if she'd just forgotten where she put it, but a quick look around the room showed that other students were having similar moments of confusion.
Lysander, who was usually calm and collected, looked slightly puzzled as his pencil rolled off his desk and fell to the floor. Capucine's notebook had somehow ended up on the floor as well, even though she hadn't touched it.
"What the...?" Capucine murmured, picking up her notebook.
Lynn glanced around, noticing Nathaniel looking down at his desk in surprise, where his pen had mysteriously disappeared only to reappear at the edge. Castiel, who usually didn’t care about anything happening in class, was eyeing his textbook suspiciously.
Mr. Faraize, blissfully unaware of the small disturbances, continued with his lecture:
"The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the spark that ignited the conflict, but there were many underlying causes..."
Lynn frowned, trying to shake off the odd feeling creeping over her. She opened her textbook, but her mind was elsewhere. The movements were too subtle to cause any real alarm, but they were unsettling nonetheless. She exchanged a glance with Iris, who gave her a quizzical look as if to say "Did you see that too?".
Class continued with little fanfare, but Lynn couldn’t shake the feeling that something was watching them.
By lunchtime, the strange occurrences were mostly forgotten. The cafeteria was bustling with students, and the clatter of trays and chatter filled the air. Lynn grabbed her lunch and joined Rosalya, Alexy, and a few others at their usual table. The conversation was light; Rosalya was recounting a funny story about Leigh's latest tailoring mishap, and Iris was listening with amusement.
As they ate, Lynn noticed something odd. A fork floated for a brief moment above the table before clattering back down. She blinked, certain she’d just imagined it, but then it happened again, this time with a spoon.
"Did you see that?" she whispered to Alexy, who was seated next to her.
Alexy nodded, his eyes wide. "I thought it was just me."
Lysander, who had been silent until now, finally spoke up. "Something's not right. I’ve noticed things moving on their own all morning."
"Like what?" Lynn asked, leaning in closer.
"My pencil case fell off my desk without me touching it, and my notebook ended up in the wrong spot." he said, his voice calm but serious... even though Lysander loosing his notebook was normal around here.
"Same here." Rosalya added. "It’s like... like something’s in the air."
Just then, a gust of wind swept through the cafeteria, despite the windows being firmly shut. Papers flew off tables, and a few students yelped in surprise as their utensils clattered to the floor. The entire cafeteria went silent for a moment as everyone looked around, bewildered.
"What the hell?" Kim muttered from the next table over.
But just as quickly as it had started, the strange phenomena stopped. The air settled, and the noise of the cafeteria slowly resumed, students brushing off the incident as a fluke. The tension evaporated as quickly as it had appeared, leaving behind only a faint sense of unease.
After lunch, Lynn found herself in the library, searching for some quiet amidst the chaos. As she reached for a book on one of the higher shelves, she paused, hearing a faint rattling noise. She glanced around, but the library was nearly empty except for a few students scattered at the tables.
Shrugging it off, she continued her search, but the rattling grew louder, more insistent. She turned, just in time to see a row of books shoot off the shelf and land in a heap on the floor.
Lynn jumped back. She stared at the pile of books, her mind racing. This was no coincidence. She quickly gathered her things and left the library. As she made her way to her next class, she couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was watching her, just out of sight.
But who, or what, could it be? And why was it happening now?
As she walked home that afternoon, Lynn replayed the events of the day over and over in her mind. The strange movements, the unexplained gusts of wind, the books flying off the shelves... it all pointed to something. But just as she turned the corner towards her house, she heard a familiar voice call out from behind her:
"Hey, Lynn! Wait up!"
She turned to see Kentin jogging towards her, his bag slung over one shoulder. As he caught up to her, he fell into step beside her.
"Hey, Kentin." she said, a little surprised. "What’s up?"
"Not much..." he replied, slightly out of breath. "Just thought I'd walk you home. If you don't mind, that is."
"Of course not!" Lynn said, feeling a small flutter in her chest. "I'd like that."
They walked in comfortable silence for a few moments before Kentin spoke up again:
"I heard about the weird stuff happening at school today."
Lynn nodded, glancing at him. "Yeah, I noticed it too. Do you think it’s just a bunch of coincidences, or...?"
Kentin shook his head, his expression serious. "I honestly don't know..."
When they arrived at the loft, Kentin paused at the front gate. His usual confident demeanor seemed to waver slightly, revealing a glimpse of his uncertainty. For a moment, he dropped his tough facade, and his smile took on a softer, more genuine quality.
"I guess this is where I leave you." he said, his voice tinged with a rare vulnerability.
"Yeah." Lynn said, noticing the change in him. The sight of Kentin’s unguarded expression made her feel a pang of empathy. "But thanks for walking me home. It means a lot."
Kentin nodded, his cocky smirk returning but with a lingering hint of the vulnerability he’d just shown. "Anytime. And if you need anything, or if the weird stuff happens again, just let me know, okay?"
"Will do." Lynn nodded, feeling comforted.
As Kentin walked away, Lynn turned and headed inside. The house was quiet, and she took a moment to let the day’s events sink in. As she reached her room, she pulled out her phone and saw a message from Armin.
> Armin: Hey, everything okay? You seemed quiet today.
> Lynn: Yeah, just a weird day. How about you? Still up for gaming tonight?
> Armin: You bet! I’ve been practicing, so you’re in for a challenge ;)
> Lynn: We’ll see about that!
She smiled at the exchange, feeling even more better. Maybe a night of gaming would help take her mind off things. But deep down, she knew that whatever was happening at Sweet Amoris wasn’t something she could ignore. Not for long.
She made a silent vow: she would find out what was going on, no matter what it took. The shadows lurking in Sweet Amoris wouldn’t stay hidden forever.
And neither would Mattie.
