Chapter 8

Finally, after spending many days in the hospital and giving the parkade too much of my hard-earned money, Briana is ready to be discharged. By the time I arrive at her suite, she is already waiting impatiently.

"You're late," she groans, attempting to wheel herself around in a wheelchair.

"By five minutes. You knew I had to work today."

"I know; I'm just giving you a hard time."

"Ugh," I sigh. "Let's get you out of here."

"With fucking pleasure," she says, attempting to wheel around again.

"Bri," I say, shaking my head, "let me help you."

I grab ahold of the handles on the wheelchair and guide her out the door. The nurses wish her well as we wheel past them, but I know better. They're probably ecstatic that this crazy lady is finally leaving their ward. I would be overjoyed, too, if I weren't taking this lunatic home with me.

As we wait for the elevator, the image of Jason pops into my mind. I still haven't spoken to him about what happened a few weeks ago. I do want to talk to him, but I don't want to scare him off or put pressure on him. I've always been the one who goes along for the ride rather than initiating anything. That's how things happened with Kyle, and with Jason fifteen years ago.

The ding signaling the elevator's arrival is what pulls me from my thoughts. I'm ready to push Briana's wheelchair onto the elevator until the door opens, revealing Jason's beautiful face.

"Man, am I glad to be seeing the backside of you," Jason sneers, a smile forming on his lips.

"I'm sure you are," Briana mumbles under her breath.

I swat her shoulder.

"Hi, Kate," Jason says, directing his attention to me.

I immediately feel heat irrupt all over my body.

"Hi," I say, trying not to feel awkward, as I push the wheelchair onto the elevator.

"I'll come down with you," he says, pressing the main-floor button.

"Are you sure you don't want to come home with us, doc? Kate's bed is extremely comfortable," Briana says.

I quickly put my head next to Briana's.

"Shut. Up," I whisper into her ear before looking up at Jason sympathetically.

Thankfully, the opening of the elevator door deflates some of the tension.

By the time I get Briana settled in the car – which didn't come without her refusal for help – I feel less awkward around Jason. It helps that Bri is in the car and not budding in on our conversation.

"I'm so sorry about that," I say as I close the passenger-side door.

"About what?"

"About Briana. She enjoys making snide comments."

"Oh, I know, Kate. I've had to put up with her for the past two weeks."

"I'm so sorry for the inconvenience," I joke.

Jason chuckles.

"But about what she said, I'd love to see you again, Kate."

I squint at him, trying to figure out if he is serious or not. If he is pranking me, so help me God, I will be pissed.

"You do?"

"Kate," he says, placing a hand on my arm, "of course, I do."

His touch sends shivers through my body but makes me feel warm at the same time.

"I would love that. And, you know, maybe we can have more of a conversation this time," I say, smirking.

A warm smile forms on his lips, making my pulse quicken.

"God, I've missed you, Kate," he says, placing a hand on to my cheek before placing his lips gently on top of mine. "I'll call you."

With that, he takes the wheelchair and heads back into the hospital. I watch him walk away before getting into the vehicle with Briana, who will most definitely have something to say about what she just viewed.

"So," Briana asks, pursing her lips.

"So, what?"

"What did doctor Jason say?"

"He asked me out, actually."

"Thank God. I would have to kick him in the balls if he didn't."

"That might be hard to do with broken legs."

"Fractured, Kate. They're just fractured."

I roll my eyes at her and start the engine.

Briana has always been interested in my love life; more than a sister should be. Even when we were teenagers, she was always asking for details, which she knew I didn't want to share. She's a pusher, though, and will probably be for the rest of her life. At this point, I don't expect anything less; if Briana isn't prying into an aspect of my life, then something is most likely wrong with her.

"So, when are you seeing him again?" Briana asks.

"I don't know," I say honestly, trying to keep my focus on the road; the traffic is awful.

"Oh, please," she huffs.

"Seriously, Bri, I don't know. He said he'd call me."

"Ooh, so he's playing it that way, is he?"

"Playing it what way?"

"Keeping you in suspense, making you wait for him to make the first move."

"He's always made the first move, well, except for when I kissed him at Reggie's a few weeks ago."

"Kate! You need to take more risks!"

"That, coming from the woman with casts on her legs."

"You're right. I would much rather say that I broke, correction, fractured my legs doing something exuberant, like mountain climbing or skiing – but I didn't; it was a freak accident. You shouldn't treat this chance you have with Jason as an accident; you need to take life by the horns and ride it for all it's worth!"

"Don't think I didn't notice the sex reference in there," I groan.

"Okay, yeah, it's not all about the sex. But come on, Kate; you have to take advantage of what's right in front of you!"

I know Bri's right; I shouldn't be taking this chance I have with Jason for granted. It's a miracle that we are in each other's lives; I honestly thought I'd never cross paths with him again. He's the only good thing that has come out of Briana's accident.

The two of us stay silent for the rest of the ride. Briana doesn't try to pick up the conversation, knowing full-well that I am pondering her mini-lecture. She doesn't speak until we park in front of the townhouse.

"This is going to be a challenge," she says, looking towards the concrete steps.

"We can do this! There's a wheelchair inside that I got from the hospital yesterday.

"If you complain that I'm heavy, I'm going to kill you."

"Fine, then don't complain about how I carry you."

After struggling to find a stance we were both comfortable with, we made it inside the house. I plopped Bri onto the sofa before bringing the wheelchair over to her. I already know she wants to roam around the house on her own. She will probably die of boredom if she's tethered to the couch for the foreseeable future.

Briana has always been a pain to live with, and there is no doubt in my mind that she is going to make the next couple of months unbearable for me. I've already stocked the fridge with the food she likes to eat and bought her guilty pleasure, Reece peanut butter cups.

"Where are they," Briana demands, when she sees me standing in the kitchen.

"They're in the freezer, where they're supposed to be."

"Well, does it look like I can get them myself," she says, still sitting on the couch.

"Fine," I groan as I open the freezer and grab the peanut butter cups.

I sit next to Briana on the couch and hand her the package. She takes them without comment, immediately ripping the wrapper open and shoving one into her mouth.

"Fuck, yes," she moans.

"Seriously?"

"What? It's been a hot minute, okay."

"Whatever. I'm going to order some pizza; what do you want?"

"Hawaiian, as if you even had to ask."

I chuckle as I grab my phone from my back pocket. As I'm about to dial, it starts vibrating in my hand, and Jason's name appears on the screen.

"What is it?" Briana asks.

"It's Jason."
