Chapter 6

I can't breathe. I haven't been able to steady myself since Jason's pager went off. He's refusing to tell me anything; I don't even know if the page is for Briana. But I can tell by the way he's acting that it's urgent.

The tires of Jason's car screech as we halt to a stop in the parkade. He doesn't say a word to me; he gets out of the car and begins running. I follow him into the hospital, heart in my throat, fear in my lungs. I don't let up until we're rounding the corner to the ICU.

I stop running in fear that if I follow Jason into the room, I will be traumatized. I don't want to see Briana suffering; I've already seen that once today, and that was too much. So, I stay in the hallway, leaning against the wall catching my breath. It isn't until now that I can process what has just happened.

I just had sex with Jason.

Suddenly, my mind floods with a tidal wave of emotions.

I just had sex with Jason in his car behind Reggie's, and it was fucking amazing!

I burst out laughing. I can't believe I actually did that; it's something I never do. But it's Jason, and for some reason, I've always drawn to him in that way. Even when we were kids, I was never able to resist him.

Briana would most definitely call me out on this. She'd probably point out how stupid it was and how stupid I was for actually going through with it. But then again, she would probably applaud me because I never let-loose and have a good time. She'd most likely praise the fact that I got laid for the first time in two years, which is how long it's been since the one-night stand escapade.

After processing my actions, I realize how much I need Briana to help me rationalize my next move. I'm like a fish out of water; I have no idea what to do. What the hell does this mean for Jason and me? Was it just a one-time thing, a heat-of-the-moment rash decision, a mistake – I have no idea? Briana would be able to help me. Heck, she would probably call Jason out on it, that's if she ever finds out at all.

"Kate?" Jason's voice calls, pulling me from my thought-bubble.

I look at him. He's standing in the doorway, tablet chart in-hand.

"You can come in," he says, nodding his head in the direction of the room.

Slowly, I make my way towards the door and peer in. Bri still looks rough; she's on oxygen. But then I notice her eyes; they're open!

"Oh my God, Bri," I say, rushing over to her.

"Hey Kate," she says, still groggy from the anesthetic.

"You scared the shit out of me!"

"I figured. Sorry."

"It's fine. I'm just glad you're okay."

"So, what happened?"

"You were hit by a car and-"

"No, I mean the game. Did we win?"

I look at her, utterly puzzled at the fact she is more worried about the outcome of a stupid hockey game than her health.

"You can't be serious?"

"It was an important game, Kate. We're on the verge of playoffs!"

"Jesus. Well, it's good to know that your memory wasn't affected." I say with an eye-roll.

She returns my look of disapproval before focusing her attention back on Jason.

"So, doc, tell me straight, am I dead?"

"Uh, no?" Jason says, sounding confused.

"Briana, this isn't a time for jokes!" I say.

"I know, I know. Kate, have you met doctor Atkins?"

"I um," I mumble, looking over at Jason.

Oh, you know, I just saw him for the first time in fifteen years and then proceeded to fuck him in his car.

"Bri," I start, again, "do you not recognize him?"

Briana looks over at Jason, clearly thinking hard to try and remember him.

"Holy-fucking-shit. Jason?"

"Yes. It's nice to see you too, Briana," he says.

I giggle and glance over at Jason. I catch him smirking at me before turning his attention back to Briana.

"Okay, so, back to your condition. You've experienced some head trauma and have fractures in both of your legs. You're going to have to take it easy for a while."

"But my job-"

"No, Bri. You have to rest, which means no work."

"Kate, I can't, not work. It's my job."

"I know, and I know it's important to you. But you have to take this seriously. You don't have a sprained ankle; you have broken legs!"

"Kate's right, you're going to need some assistance in your recovery. You won't be able to accomplish simple tasks on your own for a while. I suggest that you either stay with someone, Kate, preferably or have someone stay with you."

"I am not having some stranger live in my house!"

"Then you'll stay with me."

"Oh, no way-"

"Bri, I know you're too proud to accept the fact you need help, which isn't news to me; I've dealt with this my entire life. You need help, so you're moving in with me for the time being, if you want to or not."

"Kate, you can't be serious."

"I am completely serious, Bri! You need my help. Let me help you."

I watch Briana as she looks from me to Jason, then back to me.

"Well, fuck me!" she moans.

"Yeah, you won't be doing that for a while, either," Jason chimes in.

Briana looks at him, eyes wide, eyebrows raised.

"Seriously?"

"Alright," Jason starts, "I'm going to give you two a minute."

Once Jason leaves the room, Briana turns her attention back to me.

"He can't be serious."

"Bri, he is one-hundred percent serious. He's a doctor, so I think he knows best."

"I am not giving up my sex life! Just because you've chosen to be celibate until now, doesn't mean that I have to be."

"What do you mean, until now?"

"Seriously, Kate? I knew from the minute I realized who Jason was. I saw the way he was looking at you; he was undressing you with his eyes."

"I...How?"

"Kate, I can read sexual tension from a mile away. And I know you, especially when it comes to Jason."

"It was just once!" I blurt out.

"Oh my God, you admitted it."

I stretch my lips into a thin line

"So, how was it?" she pries.

"Fuck," I say, dipping my head back, "you don't even know."

"That good?"

"Yeah. I don't even want to know what he's capable of doing in an actual bed."

"Wait. Where did you guys..."

"In the backseat of his car," I say, putting my hands to my face in embarrassment.

"Sweet Jesus, Kate. How long was I out?"

"Well, the hospital's page about you waking up is what interrupted us."

"Oh, well, sorry for living," she says, sarcastically.

I roll my eyes at her again.

"Well, thank God you're alive," I say, placing my hand on hers.

She looks at me, sympathetically.

"Can you please put me out of my misery?"

I don't even have to ask; I know she's talking about the game. I pull my phone from my purse and open the NHL app.

"Toronto beat Boston three to one in regulation."

"Fuck, yes!"

"Are you satisfied now?"

"Not as satisfied as you, but yes," she smirks.

"Okay, okay, let's give it a rest," I laugh.

"Fine, then stop grinning. I'm not in a good mood."

My face deflates, settling into my regular bitch-face.

"That's better," she says, grinning.

"Okay, well, I'm going to grab some stuff from your place and take it over to mine. I'll set you up in the office."

"You're making me sleep on the futon?"

"Bri, you can't do the stairs."

"Oh, right," she says, looking down at her legs.

"Everything is going to be fine, Bri."

"You don't know that."

"Have faith," I smile.

She rolls her eyes at me.

"Okay, you sit here and wallow. Please don't harass Jason. I don't think he'll be able to handle your wrath."

"Fine, for your sake, I won't say anything."

I laugh, shaking my head at her as I get up and leave the room. I see Jason standing at the nurse's station, talking to one of the nurses. Choosing not to interrupt him, I continue making my way down the hallway.

"Kate, wait up!" I hear Jason holler behind me.

I turn around and see him jogging towards me.

"Are you leaving?"

"Yeah. I'm going to grab some stuff from Briana's and take it over to my place. I need to set up her room for when she can come home."

"Oh. You know she won't be able to leave for about a week or so. I have to monitor her head injury."

"I figured, and I'll let you tell her that. She's had enough of me already."

He laughs, guiding me around the corner, out of sight from the nurse's station. Once we're out of sight, he backs me into the wall, enclosing the space between our bodies. I look into his soft eyes, watching him take in every inch of me as he brings his hand to my cheek. He dips down and softly brushes his lips over mine, lingering there for a moment before pulling away.

"I've wanted to do that for the last hour," he admits.

I smile softly, but it fades away just as fast.

"What's wrong?" he asks.

"I have to tell you something."

"What is it, Kate?"

"Briana knows. I didn't say anything; she figured it out."

"Well, fuck me."
