Chapter 14

I burst through the front door carrying two reusable shopping bags. The darn things are so heavy that I feel as if my fingers are going to fall off. I close the door with my foot and make my way into the kitchen, placing the bags on the island.

When I turn around, I catch Briana's stare. She's looking at me like I'm some crazy person. "What?" I say.

"What the hell are in those? You just went shopping."

"They're supplies for tomorrow night."

"And what is tomorrow night?" Bri asks, looking completely clueless.

"We're hosting a small party for the game tomorrow night. I've invited some people from work and some of our friends."

"Well, this is short notice. Wait. Which of my friends did you invite?"

"Kelly, Jen, and Mel. I didn't invite Karla because I know all she does is get drunk and embarrass herself in front of everyone. We don't need that."

"And?" she pries, knowing full well that if I refuse to tell her who else is coming, she will put up a huge fight.

"Neil, Bradly, Connor – all the guys we know who love hockey, don't worry."

"Are you inviting Jason?" she asks me, point-blank.

"I've thought about it, yes."

"Well, it's the least that you could do, saying as you dropped this party on me with a day's notice."

"Hold on, how did this turn into being about you?"

"It's all about me, isn't it?" she mocks, framing her face with her hands and smiling widely.

"You're ridiculous. Here, come and help me figure out how many pizzas I need to order for tomorrow."

While Briana wheels over to me, I grab my phone from my purse. As I'm opening Jason's text thread, a message from him appears on the screen.

"When am I going to see you again, beautiful?" it reads.

I can't help but smile at the screen. Jason is so sweet and thoughtful. I'm so mesmerized by his message that I don't notice Briana poking me in the side. I'm only brought back to reality when she slaps my ass. Hard. "Ow! What the hell was that for," I half-yell.

"You were swooning way too hard there. Who is it, Jason?"

"Who else would it be," I say, rolling my eyes.

"You better be inviting him," she says smugly.

"I will, I will," I brush off, shoving the phone into the back pocket of my jeans.

The great-pizza-debacle took over an hour. We finally decided on ordering seven pizzas, two Hawaiian, three pepperonis, and two meat-lovers. Thank God none of our friends are vegetarians, because I don't think I could go through with ordering a pizza without meat on it. If you're doing that, you may as well eat a salad.

In amongst the food planning, the two of us also decided how to rearrange the living room to accommodate the number of people I've invited. Little does she know, there is an extra person that she hasn't accounted for.

"Will you call Jason and invite him already?" Briana scolds.

"Fine. If it will shuts you up, I will," I say, heading towards the stairs.

Once I'm safely tucked away in my room, I pull my phone from my pocket. My thumb hovers over Jason's name, for God knows how long before I actually put pressure on the screen.

"Hey gorgeous," his voice booms through the receiver.

"Hey," I say through a smile.

"I didn't think I was going to hear from you so soon. What's going on?"

"Well, I actually called to ask if you wanted to come over tomorrow night-"

"Uh, yeah. I'll be there."

"Oh, awesome, because-"

"The things I'm going to do to you," Jason coos, cutting me off.

"I..." I gasp through a giggle. "Jason, I'm hosting a Leaf's party tomorrow night. There will be other people," I finally admit.

"Oh," he says. I can sense the change of tone in his voice.

"Jase," I start, "don't spiral."

"I'm not," he laughs. "I guess I'll have to wait until later to do the unspeakable things I'm thinking about."

"We shall," I say, pulling my lip between my teeth, "I can't wait."

Just from hearing Jason's voice, I have phantom feelings. I can feel him inside of me, touching me, kissing me, doing those ever-so unspeakable things to me. It makes me have to take a seat on the bed, the same bed where he took me to places, I haven't been in a long time. Jason is bliss. He is far better than bliss. What he is, is undefinable.

"Kate?" Jason's voice pulls me from my fantasy.

"Sorry. So, you'll come tomorrow?"

"Of course, I will. I'd never pass on an opportunity to see you."

His words make me blush. "Awesome!" I exclaim cheerfully. "Oh, I have to tell you! The party is secretly a ploy. I'm setting Briana up with my boss."

"Wait, that Carter guy is coming?"

"Well yeah, I invited him."

"To set up with your sister?"

"Yes."

"Kate," he says, changing his tone, again.

"What is it?"

"Do you think that's a good idea? From what you've told me about the guy, it's obvious that he has feelings for you."

"Jase, I'm pretty sure he thinks I'm still married."

"Wait. What?"

"I didn't broadcast my divorce at work. I didn't want anyone's pity."

"Oh, well-"

"I think it'll be fine. I think once you meet him, you'll see how perfect he is for Bri. They are so much alike."

"Arrogant, headstrong, and set in their ways?"

"Exactly! They are basically the same person. I can't believe I haven't thought about setting them up sooner!"

"Okay, I guess I'll just have to accept the fact that he's coming. But I'm going to keep an eye on him."

"I don't know if you'll have time for that," I say, molding my tone into a seductive slur.

"Now, whatever do you mean?" he says, playing off me.

"You'll be too busy hosting with me, of course! With Bri out of commission, I'm out a second. I need you, Jason."

"Here, I thought that we could slip away for some alone time."

"Jason," I hiss.

"I guess if you need me..."

"I do! And don't worry, your efforts will be rewarded at the end of the night," I grin, still flirting.

"Katie-girl, the things you manage to do to me with just your voice."

I giggle and shake my head. "Oh Jason, if only you knew the dirty things I've been thinking about," I coo.

"Fuck, Kate. I don't think I can wait until tomorrow night."

Jason's words make me giggle again. I don't know how he manages to put me into this state. I feel like a teenager. Like I've been transported back in time. As if I'm seventeen again, impatiently by the phone waiting for his call. I'm a goner now just like I was back then.

"Jase," I tease.

"Three days is too long to go without seeing you."

"Aren't you on call?" I retort.

"You're right," he sighs, "I guess I'll have to wait."

"Don't worry, baby. I'll make it worth your while."

"Are you pulling me into phone-sex while I'm at the hospital?" Jason accuses.

"What? No," I state. Am I? I've never done phone-sex before. Kyle was never into that sort of thing. He much preferred hearing my hushed voice in the flesh, with him flush against my body. I have to admit; I prefer in-person sexual innuendos rather than virtual ones. "I don't think I could do it justice, anyway," I admit.

"Don't say that, baby," he coos.

I laugh. "Okay, we should stop before I end up embarrassing myself. I'll see you tomorrow night. Have a good rest of your shift."

"Okay, fine. Have a good night, Kate, and be ready for tomorrow."

I can sense the suggestion in his voice. "Oh, don't worry, I will be."
