*28* Brothers on a mission
Gemini abandoned his writing, closing his laptop. He reached for his phone and immediately contacted Phuwin, sending him a short but firm message.
Gem: Come to me as soon as possible, we need to talk.
Phuwin and Gemini lived in the same building but on different floors. That's why Phu may have witnessed something that could shed new light on the case. Gemini clung to this possibility like a drowning man clung to straws. Phu might have some answers, so it was worth swallowing your pride this once and talking to him honestly.
He didn't get an answer until three century-long minutes later. And it was annoyingly short.
Asshole Brother Phu: Why? Write to me, I don't want to walk so far, I had a hard day, forgive me today
This news unnerved him. He clenched his hand into a fist and slammed it on the desk.
“Ouch!” He hissed, rubbing his sore hand. “I'll pay you back someday, Phuwin, you idiot”.
Despite his anger, he couldn't let go of talking to him. He wanted to know what Phu had seen and recorded. And also why?
Gritting his teeth and frowning, he replied furiously:
Gem: Get off your royal ass and come to me. I'm waiting! This is IMPORTANT!
Asshole Brother Phu: You can always come to me, same way.
Gem: idiot
Asshole Brother Phu: I was just going to tell you something, but since you're acting like this, I won't tell you anything
Gem: Sorry! Tell me!
Asshole Brother Phu: no, you could have been nicer
Gem: Listen, Phu, something weird is going on, can you be serious for a moment? I need to talk to you and I have my own reason for you to come to me. I'll explain it to you once you're here, come on, come to me. I'm sorry, okay?
Five minutes later, it turned out that he had managed to interest his brother, although he came to him in a bathrobe and pajamas and funny slippers with cat ears. Gemini just rolled his eyes irritably, but let his brother into the room. And then, without any preamble, he asked:
“Were you recording Fourth yesterday?”
“Yesterday? Should I record your Fourth? Why? It's not MY boyfriend.”
“Don't make me look like an idiot, I saw you through the window, you were recording something with your phone. I also saw that Fourth had left our apartment building a moment earlier, but my window had a poor view of the parking lot, and I thought that's where Fourth had gone”.
“Ah, so that's why you brought me here…” Phu sighed and fell heavily onto the couch. “I had a really long and difficult day today, I'll tell you if you make me something to eat. It could be something simple. I'm exhausted.”
Gemini had the words on the tip of his tongue: "Do it yourself, I'm not your servant," but he just waved his hand, not wanting to argue with him. Especially since Phuwin looked very tired and Gemini somehow felt sorry for his brother.
By the time Gemini had prepared the omelette, Phuwin had already fallen asleep. Gem noticed that his phone had slipped out of his pants pocket and was lying next to him. The younger brother took the device and unlocked it easily. He made sure Phu was sound asleep and started looking through his photo gallery. He found the video recorded by Phu quite quickly. He clicked "Play" and started watching.
In the recording, he saw Fourth crying and repeating the same sentences over and over again:
“I'm sorry, Gem, I'm really sorry, I don't deserve to be friends with you, I know I don't, I'm sorry. I don't deserve us to be together. I can't put you in such danger”.
The words were slurred, Phu recorded them from a distance, and Fourth twice shouted some of them at the top of his lungs without even considering the consequences of such behavior. In the recording, he also saw a shadow resembling a gray, slightly blurry silhouette of a man standing next to the driver's door of a gray Toyota.
"It must be Heart, I've got him!" He suddenly thought excitedly. The recording wasn't of very high quality, but it helped him realize that Fourth was actually not responsible for anything. Even if Gun was one of his personalities, the real Fourth didn't have nothing to do with him. Even though P'First said that Fourth doesn't have access to Gun's memories, they are locked to him. But he is still able to feel remorse, but he doesn't know what it is about. Gem thought that something must be real torture like that.
Seeing the boy's despair and frustration, Gemini felt a wave of compassion wash over him. He didn't even want to imagine what it was like to not be sure who you actually were...
Not-so-gently, he woke Phuwin up by tugging on his arm.
“Huh?” Phu looked at him blankly. “What time is it? Is it time to go to lectures?”
“Lectures? Phu, it's 9:49 p.m., night! Wake up, I have a case.”
“A case?”
“Uh-huh. I wrote to you about it. Here, here's your omelette, I don't know why you suddenly want to eat an omelette in the middle of the night, but so be it.”
“I didn't want to eat it at all.”
„No? But you asked me to prepare you something to eat!”
“I didn't ask you for anything! You would poison me!”
“If so, you should be happy, because if I poison you, you will have peace from me.”
Phuwin pretended to seriously consider this possibility. Gem slapped him on the shoulder.
“Ouch, you're cruel!”
„Okay, eat and listen, because it's important”.
“You're the one not listening to me. I said I didn't want to eat at all”.
“Then you'll eat it anyway, because I put a lot of effort into preparing it for you. Eat and don't be picky, be happy that there is someone to cook something for you”.
“Uh, okay, then tell me what you wanted”.
Gemini smiled triumphantly. He won this fight. And then he told him about his dreams, about strange situations, and finally he showed him two sheets of paper: on one there was a note made by Gem consciously and with his own hand, it was a copy of what he thought Heart had written using his body , and the second one showed a "message from Heart".
“This is my own writing. Now look at this. They are different. I didn't write it!”
“Are you sure it's not you? You might have been tired, sleepy, and so on.”
“I'm absolutely sure. I think Heart is here with us, but I can't see him now. Maybe he found out you were coming and hid. I just have no idea where or how the ghosts hide.”
Phuwin bravely endured hearing these revelations, but whenever Gem mentioned anything about ghosts, his skin crawled. He has always been afraid of ghosts. And monsters under the bed. He never looked under the bed. Ghosts, demons, anything that couldn't be explained in a logical, scientific way terrified him. With Gem he didn't have to pretend he wasn't afraid of them, his little brother knew him too well, and yet he refrained from showing what he really felt and thought.
“I know! We need to get the address of your Fourth's fathers”. Phuwin finally, after eating the omelette, felt that he had gained new energy, and a short nap seemed to clear his mind.
“How are you going to get it?”
“Simple. I can hack Fourth's online accounts, he must have a hidden message somewhere about his whereabouts.”
Gem looked sour. He didn't like the idea, Phu could sense it immediately.
“If you can think of something better, tell me, I'm listening. I'm waiting for some brilliant idea of yours.”
Gemini looked into his brother's eyes. And only then did he believe that Phuwin was hiding his concern for him under a mask of sarcasm and being mean. Phuwin was a master at making faces that scared off anyone, even the bravest, only Pond and Fourth were not afraid of him, as if the two of them saw something more in him that was hidden from his sight.
“Okay, do your thing”. Gemini capitulated and handed Phuwin his laptop. “Let's hope it works out”.
“Calm down, I'm the best at this in the whole team.”
Phuwin winked at his brother and leaned over the laptop screen, focusing only on the task before him. At the same time, a beep sounded, indicating a message notification from Line. Gem read it immediately. To his horror, it was Fourth, his Fourth, his silly, funny, clumsy, adorable boy to whom he had so carelessly entrusted his heart, and at that very moment he was cruelly breaking it, throwing it into the mud.
Each subsequent sentence was like cutting the skin with a red-hot knife. And when Gemini had read the whole thing, he left the room for the bathroom, so as not to show his weakness in front of Phuwin, and only there he sank down on the cool, light tiles, leaning his back against the bathtub.
So he lost everything he ever cared about. He lost Fourth and didn't even know where to look for him. He wanted to cry, but he remembered that Phu was just behind the wall in the next room and held back by gritting his teeth. A twitch spread across his face, and when he looked at his reflection in the mirror, he no longer saw the cheerful and silly kid. This time, opposite him stood an adult man with strong, taut muscles and a menacing look. Gem himself was afraid of his own appearance. He was wearing only long pajama pants and a tank top, which only emphasized the muscles in his arms that were extremely powerful for his age. The anger on his face made him look like a real monster. And suddenly he realized why his mother hated him so much. It wasn't that he was so much like his father. NO. His mother must have already noticed certain signals that clearly indicated the direction in which Norawit's growing up was heading. The boy transformed from a charming boy into a terrifying, dangerous and full of anger and aggression adult man.
This sight irritated Gem so much that he swung his hand and slammed the hand that held the phone into the mirror, which cracked under the force of his impact and the pieces of which fell with a loud clang onto the floor and into the sink below.
“What have I done?! No no no! It is impossible! It was not me!” Gemini lost control of himself. Once again it seemed to him that someone else had taken over his body and he was just a helpless stowaway. He wanted it to end, but he knew that the memory of the sight in the mirror would haunt him for a long time.
Phuwin, disturbed by the strange noise, entered the bathroom and found his brother kneeling among the shards of the mirror. The boy's wrist was bleeding and had to be treated. Phu immediately guessed what could be the reason, seeing the slightly cracked and still lit screen of the phone with a message from Fourh. He took the phone and put it in his own pocket before helping Gem up and leading him out of the bathroom.
“And you said that you don't believe in love, for someone who doesn't believe in love, this love hurt you too much”. Phuwin said ironically. Gem didn't hear him, his thoughts were somewhere far away. Phu sat him down on the bed while he went to get the first aid kit. When he finished dressing his brother's injured wrist (he suspected that Gem had deliberately picked up one of the glass shards from the mirror and injured himself with it). Gemini sat motionless and looked as if his soul had left his body. He was breathing and Phu had a clear pulse, but there was no life in him. Phu needed to find out the truth, to find out the exact cause of his terrible condition, so he took out Gem's phone and, after unlocking it, read the message from Fourth.
“Hi Gem.
I know I shouldn't break up with you over text, but, although it may surprise you, that's what I do. We don't fit together. I felt it from the beginning. Forgive me for playing with you. Thanks for the nice time, but... But it's not for me. I don't love you and I don't want to be your boyfriend. Let it go, forget it. You are not important to me and I would like you not to contact me anymore. You don't know anything about me, you don't know me and it's better that way. Don't look for me, I'm leaving Thailand today for a distant country in Europe, far enough away that you'll never find me. Maybe you think I'm selfish, I don't care. You've pissed me off from the beginning and now it's time to tell you the truth: you don't have what it takes to be a good leader. You gave a chance to a strange boy you knew absolutely nothing about. Yes, Gem, I'm in the mafia. You're disappointed? Well... I won't apologize for that. Move on, you're a grown, strong man with balls, right? Can you do it. Forget about me. That will be better. Don't call me, don't look for me, don't ask my brothers about me. I am no longer in your life.
Goodbye
~Not Your Fourth”.
Neither Phu nor Gem knew how much it cost Fourth to write these lies, how many liters of alcohol he poured into himself before writing and sending them. They didn't know how badly his hands were shaking, or that he was seeing photos of them together on his laptop screen the entire time he was writing this. They had no idea that Gun saw the message he wrote and punched him in the face for it, calling him the biggest idiot ever. It didn't even occur to them that Fourth didn't want this at all, that he wanted Gem to read between the lines his fear, anxiety, longing and love greater than life, death and suffering.
“He didn't write it, I'm sure your Fourth wouldn't have done it,” Phuwin pinched his brother's arm painfully, which had the desired effect.
“What did you say?” Gem looked at him with a slightly unconscious look.
“I told you it wasn't your Fourth who wrote it. If you know him, and I know you know him best of all of us, you should know that he wouldn't have written this. Well, unless there's a reason”.
“Reason? Like what? Even if something happened, he should have come to me and told me about it. Together we would definitely find a way out of this situation! Whatever happened showed me clearly enough that he didn't trust me. Phu... He'll probably never trust me. He could have told me...”
Phuwin had no answer to that. He could still see Fourth crying in his mind, but he couldn't find the right words to describe what he saw.
“I have his fathers address, if we hurry, maybe we can catch him there”. Phuwin suggested, because that was the only thing he could do. “There's just one little problem. So tiny, so tiny.”
“What tiny problem?” Gem looked at him warily.
“Their house is guarded by a whole battalion of armed and dangerous security guards and we need a serious reason to enter there.”
“I have a reason. I want to see my boyfriend's father”, Gem replied without hesitation, his voice devoid of any emotion. There was something about Phuwin's attitude that forced him to calm down and approach the matter with a cool head.
"Pull yourself together, GemGem, you're not a little child or a coward, you can do it," Gemini ordered himself in his thoughts.
“Are you sure?”
“I'm absolutely sure of that. Our photos are still circulating on the Internet, I think they will want to talk to me if I say it's about their son”. Gemini tried to keep his face calm and neutral. He was an actor and many hours of workshops were now bearing fruit. Even Phuwin believed him.
“I'm going with you”.
“What for? Stay here, you are safe here. It's the mafia.”
“I don't want to be safe, I want to be with you. If they attack us...”
“They won't attack me, I'm too important a person, many people know me, it would make me angry if they even laid a finger on me.”
Phuwin sometimes envied Gemini's unwavering self-confidence and awareness of his own worth. The boy acted like he really was a fucking prince and the center of the universe. Looking at him, Phu finally let go of his fears. Gem was no longer a little boy who had to be constantly watched to make sure he didn't hurt himself because he was hyperactive. Now this was Norawit, an adult, young and handsome man ready to kill in the name of defending someone important to him, and Fourth was such a person for him.
Gem took two very similar black hoodies out of the closet and tossed one of them to Phuwin.
“Put this on, I don't want anyone to recognize us”.
Then he chose well-worn, dark, even jeans and slightly dirty white sneakers. None of it was new, expensive, or branded because he wanted to blend in, and nothing from Louis Vuitton or Prada was suitable for that. To disguise himself, he painted a few freckles on his face (one in the same place on his nose where Fourth's freckle was). He slipped on wedding rings bought for next to nothing from a jeweler he knew, believing that striking with a hand equipped with even such a small piece of metal would be more effective than striking with a bare hand.
Gem wanted to take the gun from the cabinet, but Phu stopped him.
“Don't take it, they'll think you've come to attack them. Show them your intentions are good. No weapons.”
“Okay.”
“And... And I'm going with you.”
“But...”
“There is no "but", we go together or you don't go at all.”
Phuwin was adamant, and Gem had no desire to fight him. They left the apartment together. Phu handed Gem a piece of paper with a handwritten address. It turned out to be close. They moved forward quickly, pulling the hoods of their black sweatshirts over their heads. It was already very late, most people were already slowly getting ready for bed. Only the last stragglers wandered the streets.
