Quite the Discovery
Whatever had smashed through the window was definitely a human. I could tell as much as that because they had said to me as soon as they saw me, "Well, that's not what I was expecting."
Who expects to see a dying, blind girl lying on the ground in pain when you shatter a window to a house?!
And it seemed that she was not intent on killing me. I haven't figured out how I feel about that yet.
"I've made quite the discover finding you here, haven't I?"
It sounded like a girl. It sounded older than me. Could I even tell? When you have rely on your sense of hearing more than anything else, you get pretty good at remembering what the average 21 or so year old woman sounds like.
Because this person definitely sounded like that.
I heard her footsteps coming closer to me.
I recoiled away from her, still not keen on trusting someone who probably planned to rob this house. She was a criminal, I was sure of it.
"Don't be like that."
I was shaking my head, continuing to move away the best that I could.
I looked around wildly, for no reason at all.
She had stopped walking. She had stopped talking. I had lost track of where she was. I knew where she had been, was where she was now put me at a total loss.
"What's your name? I'm Loralai, you can call me Lora, Lai, or just Loralai. Why are you lying on the ground?" she asked, and finally stepped toward me again, allowing me to locate her. But I did not respond, instead sliding across the floor away from us.
And what kind of name is Loralai? I guess Isla Kunay, step-daughter of Zaila Kunay, isn't allowed to talk.
"Why won't you answer me?!" Loralai was getting angry now. Maybe if I got her angry enough, she would leave me to die in peace.
"Stupid angst-y teenager," she spat.
I clenched my fists, but still said nothing at her insult toward me.
"Won't even respond to a direct insult? You must be deaf or something..."
Not deaf. Blind, stubborn, and determined to die. There is a pretty valid difference. But this girl must be dumb as a rock to not notice I was blind, and not deaf. The signs were everywhere. Everyone always knew from the second they met me.
"Can you even walk...?"Loralai asked. It seemed to me she was sure I was deaf, and was asking herself.
But in fact, no I cannot walk. Not anymore, at least. I can maybe stand if I put all my weight onto my good leg, but walking is a no.
Suddenly Loralai walked right up to me, and picked me up in her arm.
I squirmed and flailed, but she was too strong for a blind cripple like myself to get away.
I went completely limp in Loralai's arms.
"Let's go."
Now I was left to wonder where she was taking me, because there was nothing I could do to get away.
I've made up my mind. I'm disappointed Loralai didn't kill me, because passive, useless me is now being kidnapped and taken somewhere I don't even know where.
But I remained stubborn and said nothing.
She opened the door to the house, and stepped out of it. Leaving the door wide open, and the window shattered, she hurried off with me over her shoulder.
It seemed to effortless to Loralai to carry me. I probably weighed nothing to her.
What a turn of events. I had went from lying in a deathly hopeless state to being carried over a woman's shoulder to an unknown destination, in about 3 minutes.
