Her Fault
I slowly overcame my unconsciousness. I tried to shake off my drowsiness, but to no avail. I was laying on...something. Probably like a cot or something.
I tried to sit up, but my side screamed in protest. I grabbed my side to find it, and my stomach, bandaged tightly.
A more male voice said, "Look, Adyson, she's waking up."
I felt relief knowing Adyson was alive.
There was a shush, and then I heard Adyson said, "Be quiet, Nicholis. She probably wants to rest more."
Adyson couldn't have been more correct. I just wanted to close my eyes, and sleep. I didn't though. I forced myself to get up, ignoring the excruciating pain in my side. I leaned against the walls to keep steady, wincing as the pain slowly melted away, but not entirely. Getting up hurt more than standing.
"I guess it's time for proper introductions, then?" Adyson said.
Adyson could tell neither me or Nicholis were going to start. "My name is Adyson. It's nice to meet you."
Nicholis didn't say anything for a minute, and when he did, he only said, "Nicholis."
I stayed quiet for a minute, thinking about something.
"Are you mute, too?" Adyson said. "But I heard you screaming earlier. Do mute people scream?"
Almost as though he had read my mine, Nicholis said, "That's rude."
"Well, I'm sorry, okay! I was just curious! But are you mute, too?"
I shook my head slightly, a little caught up on the word, 'too'. Did she know I was blind? I guess it was pretty easy to tell. I said, "My name's Katya." I didn't like lying, but I wanted to keep my real name a secret for now.
"Katya... That's a pretty name." Adyson said. A moment later she said, "Nicholis! She cant see you. Nicholis agrees with me."
"I think I'm gonna go get some fresh air," Nicholis said. It was the most I've heard him say since I'd woken up.
Adyson said, "Me too!"
I heard the door close. I found the door, and twisted it open. Luckily, it wasn't directly outside. I moved around slowly, holding my arms out in front of me. I felt around for a moment, nearly running into several things.
I heard something. It was Adyson and Nicholis. I quieted down and followed their voices, until it grew louder and I could hear what they were saying.
"It's her fault Grace is dead!" Adyson said.
'Who was Grace? Whose fault?'
"It's not her fault!" Nicholis cried, "Grace sacrificed herself to save us."
"Katya killed Grace! If Katya wasn't here, Grace would be alive!"
"I don't want to be that person, Adyson, but you saved Katya."
'Is Adyson regretting saving me? But...'
"I wish I never did!" Adyson snapped. "I should've left her to die!"
I felt like I had been hit in the chest with a baseball bat. I wasn't sure whether to feel sad, or angry. Or betrayed.
"Fine! You can tell her that when we get inside." Nicholis said.
I raced back to the general area of the room I was in, quickly feeling for the door. I raced inside it, nearly slamming the door shut. My heart raced. I couldn't believe what Adyson had said.
