3- Reading and Writting

Mrs Lovett stood there in shock. "W-what do you mean?" She stuttered.
"You know what I mean Mrs Lovett, the meat inside the pies, HUMAN." The boy didn't even look up when he was talking.
"H-how did you...?" Mrs Lovett was half shocked half scared right now. What if he went to the police?! What if he wants to kill me?!
"I knew since the day Pirelli 'left' , he wouldn't just run off like that, he would make me go as well, after all he did pay for me. But that doesn't matter."
"What doesn't?" She questioned confusingly.
"That he's gone, you saved me from him m'am, I'll probably be dead if he was still around." The words made Mrs Lovett emotional. Toby looked up and saw this and have her a hug. "I ain't told no one, and I won't." He promised.
Mrs Lovett couldn't answer because she had a lump in her throat. Sweeney would want to kill him even more now, but I have to tell him. She broke away from the hug. "I'm quickly going to see Mr Todd, I'll be back in a bit." She ran up the stairs. And slammed the door open. Sweeney was just sitting there in his chair. "Sweeney he knows!" She called him by his first name without realising and Sweeney looked straight at her in confusion.
"What do you mean? Who knows?" He sat up in his chair.
"Toby, Toby knows about all this!" She started to get tearful. "He said he's known since Pirelli was gone but he doesn't care." The lump in her throat was growing from holding back the tears.
"Has he gone to the police ?!" Mr Todd said in shock.
"No, no he hasn't but he can keep it against us!" She started to cry heavy now.
"Mrs Lovett it's ok, it's alright." He randomly held her into a hug, not thinking about what he was doing. "I'll talk to him, it will be fine." He broke away from the hug and quickly ran down the stairs.
"Toby??" Mr Todd entered the kitchen and saw him staring at the table. "Toby look at me." Toby looked up and saw Mr Todd's expression. Neither angry, sad, annoyed or happy. "Now Toby what did you tell Mrs Lovett??"
"I told her I knew about the pie thing."
"How long?"
"Since Pirelli left..."
Sweeney walked over to the table and sat opposite him.
"You won't go telling the law will you?? EVER?"
"No, I won't." He simply replied. He got up and walked to his room and shut the door. Sweeney sighed and leaned back in the chair. Then Mrs Lovett entered, not crying anymore. What Sweeney hadn't noticed is that after the hug she was a little shocked by his action.
"There's nothing to be worried about Mrs Lovett."
"O-k" she walked over to the counter and started to roll some pastry.
"Something else the matter?" Sweeney realised that she looked a little awkward.
"No, nothing... Why?" She peered over.
"It's just that you look a little... Awkward..." That's when Sweeney remembered the hug, he never meant to, it just happened. He blushed a bit. "Oh, right." He started to walk back up to his shop.
"Mr Todd?" She said before he exited.
"Hmm?"
"Are you going to start properly shaving people now?"
"Yeh, I guess, earn the way I used to." He left the bakers and went back into the barbers.
Toby had over heard the whole conversation. Why is Mrs Lovett feeling awkward? And Mr T is going to start shaving people? This is different. He started to play with his toys and after a while he took a nap.
In the barbers Sweeney wasn't getting any customers, so he started to draw. He drew several different animals, different sketches of landscapes. He heard footsteps coming up the stairs and quickly shoved them in the draw. Mrs Lovett entered holding an envelope. "Mr T this is for you." She handed him the envelope. It was from the law seeing as it was in a yellow envelope. He started to open it a little scared for what laid inside.
"Well, what does it say?" She looked as worried as Sweeney.
"I... It says... I don't know."
"What do you mean you don't know?" She stared at him in confusion.
"I..." He wanted to say it but it was too embarrassing. "I can't... Read." He hung his head down and went bright red. Mrs Lovett just looked at him, not knowing what to say. "Does that mean you can't write?" She questioned. He nodded and sat back down on the dressing table stool. He hid his face in his arms and layer his head on the table. He felt like crying, he wanted to read and write but he couldn't get the hand of it very well in school.
Mrs Lovett remembered him getting told off constantly at school for not doing his work, now she understands why he didn't do it.
"Oh Mr T, why didn't you tell me?"
"I don't know, I thought it was obvious... What does the letter say?"
Mrs Lovett read the letter and was relived. "They want you to pay your bill, £10"
He got two £5 notes from his pocket and placed it on the table.
"Mr T, how good are you at maths?"
"Please don't ask." He walked out of the shop with the money and started walking to the post office. Now Mrs Lovett will be asking so many bloody questions about what I learned at school... He entered the post office and waited in line. Once he was at the front he felt the back of his head, still slightly bruised. He handed in the money and they asked him to sign a piece of paper. He done a little squiggly line like he usually does and walked back to the shop.
Mrs Lovett was still thinking over what Sweeney had said. He can't read, he can't write... How could I not see this?! Just then Sweeney opened the door to the bakers and they just stared at each other awkwardly for a while. When Todd had snapped out of it he noticed Mrs Lovett still staring. "Erm, Hi? You hypnotised or something?" He walked over to a table and took a seat. As soon as he spoke Mrs Lovett had snapped out of it and blushed feeling even more awkward. "Hi, sorry, um... You ok?"
"Fine." He replied simply and grabbed a glass and the gin from the shelf beside him. He poured himself a large amount and took a rather large gulp.
"M'am?" The sound of Toby made both of them jump. "I was just wondering if I could have something to eat? I'm a little hungry." Sweeney just poured himself another glass and drunk.
"Sure, any thing you want in particular?" She offered and stopped flattening the pastry and placed the rolling pin on the table.
"Have you got any of that soup that we had?"
"No, but I could make us some, Mr T would you like some soup?" She noticed he had finished a third glass of gin and just sighed.
"Mmhm, ok..." He didn't even hear the question because he was too locked up in his own thoughts. "I'm going upstairs." He stood up and walked up stairs.
"I'll get you when it's ready then." Mrs Lovett mumbled and started to prepare the soup.
He stumbled up the stairs from being a little drunk, but it wasn't as bad as when he twisted his ankle. He sat on his chair and shut his eyes wanting to sleep. After a while he fell into a deep sleep and had another weird dream, this time he gave his life up for Toby in a life or death situation, but right before he died he woke up and felt himself grow tense again. He looked over to the door and saw Mrs Lovett standing in the doorway. He immediately stood up and he pretended nothing happened . "Er, hi? May I help you?" He says in a slightly drunk tone.
"Yes your soups ready now get down stairs."
"Alright! I'm coming!" He staggered over to his small bathroom and washed his face before letting out a small burp.
After a bit he walked down stairs, still slightly drunk. He noticed Toby sitting down on the table, giving him a cold glare. "The hell you looking at?" Sweeney mumbled and sits down at a chair. Mrs Lovett entered the kitchen and poured a portion of soup into each bowl. She took all three at one time, because she is used to serving pies like that, and laid them in front of the boys. "Tuck in..." She said and gave them a spoon each. Toby thanked her and started tucking in straight away, but Todd, however, stared at it for a little while before taking his spoon and getting a little mouthful. Of course Mrs Lovett didn't start eating until he did, because she wanted to make sure he wasn't going to stand up and leave again.
