Thirty-One: Violet Ribbons

Only Oslac ever mentioned the violet glow in Beanni's eyes, this thought, of course, bothered her. Her family never mentioned the glow after her encounter with Ethan at Luna Lake during Strellemarè. Even Dillan didn't say anything.

Dillan...

Just thinking his name made a catch come to her throat.

He was gone.

Gone to join the Emeralds.

Gone to...

No. She was not going to allow herself to think that way! Dillan will be fine, he will be fine because she was going to save him, she was going to save everybody, by helping Ethan, so that he can stop the war for good.

No matter how hard she fought with her thoughts, Dillan's face would not leave her mind. Please be okay, she prayed, but then another thought came to her. Dillan was there when Gealach Trabem blessed her the first time. The day they snuck into Night Forest together with Oslac. He was there, he saw the violet glow then, and when they returned home it was the same - nobody else said a thing about it.

Beanni then decided to try and find out what was going on. She got off her bed and crossed the room to her mirror. The question in her mind was answered as soon as she saw her reflection; the violet glow wasn't there.

She focused upon the blue of her irises. The sapphire ocean waved with lines of white foam towards the deep dark well within its centre. The blue depths glistened in a frozen moment. That blue that she was brought up to try and ignore, the same colour found in the eyes of the Head of the Biabs - the eyes of her Dad's enemy.

Beanni shook her head, not wanting her thoughts to spiral into that mess again. She needed to focus, for she could still feel the violet magic's warmth sitting inside her mind somehow.

There must be a way for her to move it back into her eyes. She studied each eye, following every line and space, every shade of blue and white.

"Okay, how do I do this?" she pondered. She then pressed her lips together and concentrated hard until all she could see was a chaotic map of delicate blue and white lines. She decided to think about Ethan, how she felt when she saw the violet glow in his eyes, when they were reflected in that strange building and floating under the surface of Luna Lake. Eventually her mind began to drift into the warmth that she knew was still there. The same warmth that she felt when she sat by the lake's edge only days ago.

It was when she remembered how she felt on the night the magic healed her that she saw the violet glow slowly return to her eyes. She watched it make its way along each straight and curved line, until both of her irises shone again with that powerful violet glow. The glare bounced upon the surface of the mirror sending rays across her bedroom.

"I knew it!" she breathed. "I knew it was still there!"

Another thought then entered her mind, which made her focus again on her reflection. Scrunching her brow into a scowl, she willed the violet light to retract back into hiding. As she did, she watched the glow slowly dim and retreat back towards her pupils, leaving behind the icy blue colour that she was born with.

"I did it!" she said with a pleased smile. She blinked a couple of times and tried again, and again - bringing the violet light to the surface, then pulling it back.

An excited laugh burst from her. "I can control it!" she declared with delight.

Knowing now that she could choose when the violet magic manifested in her eyes or not gave her reassurance that she could go to history school without unwanted questions interrupting her plans. It was something she was so glad that she worked out before going. The thought of her classmates seeing that glow in her eyes made her shudder involuntarily. What could she have said to them? How could she explain it? She didn't want to waste time racking her brain for plausible excuses or stories to tell them, assuming that they'd give her a chance to speak at all. She wanted to use the rest of that evening to focus on her mission with Oslac, for tomorrow was Beaday, the first day back at the Academy - the day they decided to do what they can for Ethan.

The still air of that clear, Earrons morning embraced Oslac's nervous face. The calm chirrup of birds mocked him as the day's plans swirled around in his head, getting louder and louder as his anxiety grew. He looked over his shoulder hoping to see Beanni there, but she still hadn't arrived. The wait made his heart thump. He tapped his fingers against the side of the fountain, where he leant. A long shaky sigh left him as he tried his hardest to hold back the impatient groan that yearned to leave his chest.

"Hey, Oz!"

Oslac jumped out of his skin, he turned and saw Beanni, dressed in her usual oversized green jumper, and with a beaming smile.

"By the stars, Bay! You nearly gave me a heart attack!"

"Sorry!" Beanni giggled, but suddenly wiped the amusement off her face. "Are you okay?"

"What took you so long?"

"Dad insisted on watching me go into the Academy! So I had to go in, hide by a window and wait for him to leave the grounds before sneaking out again - all whilst trying to stay unnoticed by others in my class. It was quite a task I can tell you. But I think I managed!" Beanni explained, her wide grin clearly showing how pleased she was with herself.

"Right..." was all Oslac managed to say in response. The worry he felt about that day seemed to want to shut him down, but he fought against it, for Beanni's sake. The look she gave him caused him to leap into the next step of their plan. He drew out his light orb, made it grow in his hand, then drew the Royal Samhun Tealia symbol on his best friend's chest. Once the magic sunk in, he drew the same symbol on himself. "Alright, we're protected, nobody can or will see us until we reach out to Genelle in the cells."

"Great! So, we better get going if we want to get to the palace!" Beanni said, grabbing Oslac's shaking hand. "Oz?"

"Today's plan would be so much easier if I had violet magic, then we could just appear in the cells, right in front of Genelle, in a second."

"But, you do have violet magic," Beanni smiled.

"No I don't, Father took it from me, remember?"

"Oz..." Beanni rolled her eyes, then a strange look came over her as she stared deep into his soul. He watched her irises light up with an unmistakable violet hue.

"What?" he said, astounded. "How did you do that?"

"I practised," Beanni said with a cheeky shrug. "So, could we use my violet magic to transport us?"

Oslac smiled, then shook his head with utter disbelief. "You are something else, Bay."

"Oz, we need to get going!"

"Right! Stand still and keep your eyes open," he instructed her and she did exactly as she was told. He then pinched the side of her face, right beside her left eye, then pulled some of the violet light magic from her mind; the exact same way he learned to put it into his own mind but in reverse. In his tight grip, between his thumb and index finger coiled a long, shining, violet ribbon. It danced in the air before Beanni's glowing eyes as he moved it to the surface of his light orb, which sat waiting in his left hand. As soon as it made a connection with the orb it sank in and joined the swirling, glittering white magic inside.

"Neat trick," Beanni said, looking impressed.

"Yes, and here's my next one!" Oslac announced, then held out his orb and made the violet ribbon multiply into many, and fly all around them. Once they were surrounded, the fountain and the rest of Central Park melted away and they were suddenly standing in the cold, dark dungeon beneath Astrid Palace.

"I don't know about this Bay..." Oslac whispered. The protection spell making them both invisible and inaudible to those present in amongst the cells. "This woman, she abducted you, she hurt you."

"I'll be okay, trust me," Beanni reassured him, laying a gentle hand upon his shoulder.

"Okay, I know its useless arguing with you. But please if she upsets you in anyway..."

"Everything will be okay, Oz."

Oslac clamped his lips together, nodded his head then reached out his orb towards Genelle's cell and tapped the bars. The light from Samhun Tealia stretched from both his and Beanni's chests and surrounded Genelle's crouched form. It drew her to her feet and turned her towards them. A look of shock plagued her eyes, but she quickly composed herself with a sneering smirk.

"So, come to visit Mummy have you?" she said without an ounce of love in her eyes.

"Watch your tongue, Gazer!" Oslac spat.

Genelle scoffed then looked them both up and down, as if looking for some sort of clue or tell. "Alright, I'll bite, What are you two doing here?"

"We need your help," Beanni piped up.

"How can I possibly help you?" Genelle asked whilst indicating her claustrophobic surroundings.

"Ethan has reached us. He needs us to open the portal and I have a feeling you know exactly how to do that." Beanni spoke with such unwavering confidence, Oslac couldn't help but glance towards her. The determination in her glare made his heart skip. She was so brave, so strong, and she was his best friend. He couldn't help but feel proud of her.

"What makes you think I know how to do something like that?" Genelle sneered.

"Because I'm not stupid."

An amused smile lit up the Fiosolim's mousey features and she let out a tiny laugh. It was so small it seemed as though she was trying to stifle it.

"Well, look at that. There's some of me in you yet!"

The colour drained from Beanni's face, making Oslac instinctively wrap a protective arm around her shoulders.

"Will you help us or not?" he demanded.

"I will, but how are we to go about this? Are you going to let me go?"

"I haven't the power to release prisoners, that's my Father's call."

"Well then, it seems we've found a snag," Genelle said with a shrug. "Also, if you can't get me out of here, what's the use of me helping you. I mean, there's nothing in it for me is there?"

"You said yourself, you want to see the Troll war end. This is the only way we can do that! You have to help us," Beanni confronted her, taking a brave step forward.

"You are quite determined aren't you?" Genelle smirked. She then took in a deep breath and let it out with a groan. "Fine! Fine... you are right, I do want to end this war. So I will help you. I presume you two have some sort of plan?"

"Well yes, you tell us how to create the Patengailte Potion and how to use it. Then we'll go and do everything we need to do."

"Right, but there's a fair few steps, you'll not remember them all and what if you get stuck?"

"We thought of that too." Oslac turned to Beanni, who was still standing strong, staring down her former abductor. "Erm, Bay?" he addressed her gently, making her shake out of her reverie. "Did you bring the mirror shard?"

"Oh, yes!" She then bent down and retrieved the glass shard from her sock. It reflected the dim lights of the dungeon as she handed it to him.

With a sudden crack he snapped it in half, the remain light magic dwindling in each piece shone as they were held side by side, in Oslac's grasp. He gave a piece to Genelle through the bars of her cell, the light getting dimmer as the distance between the shards increased.

"If we need your help at any point, we'll get in touch with you on this. It is only a one way call as you don't have your orb. So please keep it at hand, and don't let Father or any guards see you with it!"

Genelle gave him a mock salute and carefully hid the small fragment of glass beneath her belt - where her light orb pouch would usually hang.

"Oh, and I happen to have something that you will need for the Patengailte Potion," she informed them, then reached into her cloak. In a hidden pocket - a pocket that the guards clearly didn't manage to search - she drew out a tiny vial with a leather strip tied around it.

"Is that what I think it is?" Oslac asked, not able to hide his disgust.

"It's prophetic smoke," Beanni confirmed his thoughts, as the prisoner handed her the illegal substance.

"Its an important ingredient. You cannot open the portal without it, so you better be grateful!"

"Fine! Yes! Yes, I'm glad you had this, thank you," Oslac forced himself to say. The words felt like pins in his mouth. "Now, tell us everything we must know."

Genelle opened her mouth to start but something distracted her. Oslac turned to see what caused her to pause. Beanni was staring, as if in a trance, at the vial and the violet glow in her eyes began to shine brighter and brighter.

"Beanni?"

Beanni quickly turned away from the smoke to look at Oslac, he watched the violet glow dim back into her pupils and she gave him a smile. Her usual smile. It was as if she had no memory of what just happened.

"Right..." Genelle said giving Beanni a look. She then drew in a deep breath and told them everything they needed to know.
