the purple wedding
T
he kingdom of Kings Landing rejoiced as the celebration between the marriage of Margaery Tyrell and king Joffrey commenced. Gifts covered every table in the great pride of the consummation of young love. The Lannisters and Tyrells all seated at the table as Joffrey relished in Joannas unhappiness, having forced Meryn Trant to remove her from his chambers. Never allowing his sister to leave his sights.
Joanna felt like she was reliving a sick nightmare. She sat at the banquet table as the red wedding constantly played over in her mind. The smell of wine and melancholy music in her hears, every time she turned her head expected to see Robb laughing next to her, she was only met with an anxious and irritated Sansa.
She couldn't blame Sansa, both of them having been victims to Joffreys torment. Sansa his queen that never was and Joanna, unfortunately his sister. Joanna couldn't even dare to look at the food on her plate as the cooked meat only reminded her of the Stark armies that were gutted in her presence as Walder Frey cackled in her torment.
Joanna sat at the end of the table, Joffrey insisting that she not be seated with the Lannisters as she has brought such shame to their family.
"A handsome goblet, my lord." Joffrey's voice broke her train of thought as she looked to Mace Tyrell presenting a gift to the king "Or shall I call you father?"
"I shall be honoured, your grace." Mace Tyrell proudly answered to his good- son. Joanna couldn't ignore the side eye she was receiving not only from Joffrey but also from Tywin. The pair having had a heated dispute about her attack on the king- nothing that she hadn't heard before.
How it was insolent to attack her kin, her brother , her king. Joanna could not care less anymore of Joffrey, if anything she thanked gods that he had a crowd to entertain with his arrogance , knowing he lacked the charisma to gain true respect from his people.
A large book placed at the table as Tyrion presented his gift "A book? "Joffrey annoyingly questioned. Joanna recognized the book immediately having been able to recite it since she was only ten
"The lives of four kings. Grand Maester Keath's history of the reigns of Daeron the young dragon, Baelor the blessed, Aegon the unworthy and Daeron the good. A book every king should read." Tyrion answered as he glanced to Joanna, that catching Joffreys' eye. His irritation growing as even at his own wedding he couldn't escape the cloud of Joanna above him.
He gripped his cup of wine looking back to their uncle "Now that the war is won, we should all find the time for wisdom. Thank you Uncle." Joffrey contained composure
The Mountain, larger than life approached the table of the king as more of the war replayed in Joanna's mind. How her grandfather had her abducted at Harrenhall, where she forced through pure will to escape as well as with Arya... Arya. Joanna could feel the guilt wash over her as she couldn't even place on her finger what had happened to Arya that night.
She did not attend the wedding but she wondered if Arya managed to - She shook her head, it was impossible. As far as she knew she was the last survivor of the red wedding.
"One of the last Valyrian steel swords in the capital, your grace." Their grandfather gifted him "Freshly forged in your honour." Joffrey overjoyed as he stood up to receive his sword. Unsheathing it as he played with it in hand, Joannas lips drew into thin line as she forced herself not to laugh at how comical his display was. She found it humouress as even his stance to hold a sword could not compare to hers.
"Careful you grace." Maester Pycelle warned the young king "Nothing cuts like Valyrian steel."
"So they say." Joffrey played no mind to the old mans warning. Before Joanna could grab her cup of water, the blade of Joffreys sword cut through the book of the lives of four kings. The flims of paper barely hanging onto its arch. If there was ever a greater irony to Joffrey , his immature display would be it.
"Such a great sword should have a name. What shall I call her?" Joffrey looked to his crowds as they cheered for him. Varies of names were drunkenly yelled out until he decided on one "Widows Wail. I like that. Every time I use it, it will be like cutting off Ned Starks head again."
Outside of the Sept of Baelor the crowds were dispersing to the party in celebration of the Kings wedding. Joanna walked slowly behind as she walked arm linked to Tommen. The two laughed like old times as Tommen clung to his big sister.
"You know, I think you might be my favourite brother." Joanna laughed as the walked towards the gardens.
"Joanna-"
"No, its true. For one you're an absolute sweetheart and two-" Joanna took a bite of lemon cake he had snuck them in during the wedding "It's not everyone that carries desserts to their sister."
"Well you looked a bit pale at breakfast so I thought I'd bring you something sweet." Tommen sweetly replied "Plus, I can't imagine how difficult today must be for you." Tommen simpathized with his sister.
Joanna said nothing as she kissed Tommen's cheek "Thank you, but I will be fine. I just want to get through this day and have it be done with." they walked along as she noticed Tommens' eye unable to leave Margaery ahead of them. Joanna noticed the crimson in his cheeks as he kept looking forward then down to his feet again "So, is there anyone special I should know about?" Joanna teased as Tommen's cheeks grew more rosier
"No." he answered so quickly that his voice cracked. Joanna bellowed in laughter at her brothers flusters "I don't- it's not appropriate Joanna!" He quickly defended himself as he was unable to cease Joanna's laughter. Despite how flustered he was it felt good for Tommen to hear Joanna laugh again, it has been so long since she was happy
"Really? Why?" Joanna quickly answered "It's not wrong to have a dwindling eye, especially at your age."
"Can we please not talk about girls. You're my big sister." Tommen pleaded as they walked towards the grounds where entertainers and cheers and laughter filled their ears
"Which is why I'm the best person to talk to this things about." She stopped in her tracks to hold his hands, though to Tommen it felt different "I just want you to be happy. You're a great person Tommen, a good man. They are very hard to find anymore." Both glancing to Joffrey
"Joanna..." Tommen quietly said "Is something wrong?"
Joanna shook her head "No, I just want you to know that your happiness is what should be important to you. Fuck the rest." Joanna winked nodding her head to their grandfather
"Joanna!" Tommen laughed as they made their way to the tables again
Joanna sat by her table with Sansa and Tyrion as the lady Olenna approached them. She sat up straight in her seat putting down the cake in hand "You look exquisite child." She played with the necklace around Joanna's neck "I haven't had the opportunity to tell you how sorry I was to hear about your late husband. War is war, murder at a wedding, simply horrid." She sympathized
"Thank you Lady Olenna. I hope that my brother and your granddaughter will have a more happier ending to their marriage." Joanna respectfully answered as she felt Olennas' touch around the gem of her necklace.
"What sort of monster would do such a thing? As if men need more reasons to fear marriage." To that Joanna simply chuckled. Out of the corner of her eye she noticed a hooded figure at the end of the gardens , hiding between the shrubbery. Olenna stepped back as Tyrion approached his wife and niece
"My lady, my lady, beloved niece." he greeted
"Lord Tyrion, you see? Not as bad at all?" She commented "Perhaps if your pauper husband were to sell his mule and his last pair of shoes, he might be able to afford to bring you to Highgarden to visit." She glanced to Sansa "Now that peace has come and all is right with the world, it would do you good to see some of it. You must excuse me. It's time I ate some the food I paid for."
Joanna felt vile as a familiar ballad come to her hearing. The Rains of Castamere. Joanna glanced towards Joffrey , but he bare no mind to her. It wasn't him, not purposely, after all it was the ballad of house Lannister but she could feel the tears threaten to escape her eyes. She looked over the grounds to see Jaime, who looked so concerned to his daughter as the ballad of the rains reached his ear. He halted his conversation with Loras Tyrell as he slowly approached Joanna. She felt like she was going to be sick as all of her senses suddenly were heightened. She could hear everything around her. The faintest sounds of glasses clinking against each other to the heels of handmaidens behind her. Joanna readjusted herself in her seat as her leg was bouncing up and down underneath the table. It was like she was expecting something.
An arrow to be shot through the air directed at her. The table to be flipped over in order for her to take cover. She gripped her dress reminding herself over and over again that she was not in Riverrun and she was far away from Walder Frey, but even her thoughts in attempt to calm her couldn't stop her heart from racing. She clung to every breath she took as Tyrion placed his hand on his niece's shoulder seeing the impending spiral she was going through. It wasn't until Joffrey ceased the music that she managed to bring herself back from the pit of her nightmares.
"Everyone!" Margaery called as she stood "We are so fortunate to enjoy this marvellous food and drink. Not all among us are so lucky. To thank the gods for bringing the recent war to a just end, King Joffrey has decreed that the leftovers from our feast be given to the poorest in this city."
Joanna nearly choked on her breathe , unable to even fathom that Joffrey would suggest that. He didn't have a kind bone in his body. She simply rolled her eyes as the people cheered for their kings graciousness
"Everyone silence!" The young commanded as he stood from his chair "There's been too much amusement. A royal wedding is history. The time has come for all of us to contemplate our history. My lords, my ladies..." He turned to give a malicious smirk to his sister before facing his subjects again "I give you King Joffrey!" He announced as a blonde dwarf exited a lions mouth "Renly, Stannis, Balon Greyjoy and last but not least Robb Stark! The war of five kings!" Joffrey announced as dwarfs dressed as fallen kings followed behind the dwarf actor dressed as Joffrey
Joanna could feel her skin boil as her eyes laid upon the actor for Robb. His head hidden under a mask of a direwolf. Greywind, her Greywind. It was then and there that Joann realized what everyone thought - that Robb Stark was dead and his direwolf beheaded as sown onto his head. Joanna felt a heavy lump in her throat as she wondered if it was true. Her months in Kingslanding have abandoned Greywind. What if they found him? What if he was now dead somewhere or worse, mutilated and sown to her husbands corpse.
No words could explain the level of shame and disgust she felt as everyone applauded the actors. She felt sick to her stomach as her eyes couldn't remove themselves off of the Robb Stark actor. Joffrey cackled as he noticed Joanna's discomfort, falling to his seat as he laughed at their performance.
"Let the war begin!" The dwarf dressed as Joffrey announced. The chased after one another hitting each other with stuffed swords , one by one falling in the order of the demise of the kings. First Renly, then Balon, Stannis and lastly Robb.
Loras Tyrell stormed away as Joanna glanced to Margaery as she looked equally displeased with the performance of her first husbands demise.
"I'm the rightful king!" The Greyjoy actor recited
"Challenge me!" The dwarf Robb actor retailitaed hitting the Greyjoy dwarf to the floor. Everyone's cheers grew louder as Joanna could feel Sansa, Tommen and Tyrions glances on her. Her face remained blank, she would not play into Joffrey's games.
"I'M THE KING IN THE NORTH!" Robb's actor called as Joanna shook her head in disgust of the display in front of her. Joffreys' laughter ringing in her ears she felt herself become not only heartbroken but viciously angry.
Joffrey and Robbs actors stood opposed each other as they charged towards one another, purposely missing one another. "Charge!" They yelled passing one another as Joanna's hand balled into a fist as she felt her nails dig into the palm of her hand, thanking herself for wearing a red gown so the blood from her hands went unseen
"I'M THE KING IN THE NORTH!" the actors words becoming numbing to Joanna as the more he recited his words, the more Robb's blood-soaked face flashed in front of her every time she closed her eyes. The actors charged again at one another, only this time the head of the wolf flew off the head of Robb's actor as his face was painted red
Joannas body shot back as Sansa griped her hand. Joffrey's laughter growing louder and louder at his sisters reaction. Joanna could feel pairs of eyes on her from everyone as she remained silent in her chair. Her eyes lingering to Margaery who shook her head in deep sympathy for the princess.
Joffrey's actor enjoyed his round of applause as he took the head of the wolf and viciously thrusted his crotch in its head, his eyes never leaving Joanna as they taunted her. The actors took a stand as the bowed at the end of their performance as mostly everyone cheered.
"Well fought! Well fought, wouldn't you sister?" Joffrey laughed giving the actors a standing ovation "Here you are, champions purse!" he awarded the dwarf actor "Though you're not the champion yet, are you? A true champion defeats all of the challengers. Surely there are others out there who still dare to challenge my reign." He turned to look at Joanna "You can have your prize ser, if you can defeat my sister! Everyone a round of applause for my sister! The last survivor of the red wedding!" he laughed as cheers applauded him "What do you say Joanna?" He taunted "I'm sure they have a spare costume for you."
Joanna shook her head, refusing to the target of Joffrey yet again "No, thank you sweet brother." She sarcastically remarked "I would hate for my body to become more bruised and scarred than it already is. If anything the king of the seven kingdoms should be the one to take victory. After all, I've heard tales of your brave venture against Stannis in the battle of Blackwater Bay!" Joanna stood raising her cup to her brother "Take your new Valyrian sword and show everyone how a true king fights, after all you were trained by the very best." She retailitaed with her mockery of Joffrey and he took more than a little notice of his sisters remark
The crowd grew silent as the animosity between Joanna and Joffrey could be felt, yet again. He slowly approached his sister, stopping in front of her as he raised his cup of win. Joanna straightened her back as the two stared off at one another. Joanna kept her composure as Joffrey poured his wine over her head.
Joanna gave him an icy glare as the wine trickled down her face onto her chest. The pair facing Cersei and Tywin who had nothing but disappointment in their faces. Joanna spat out the wine that made it into her mouth "Excellent choice brother. It's a shame you've wasted on me, after all between your bride and you I think we all know who needs the liquid courage for tonight." Joanna retorted as Joffrey gripped his cup so hard he could feel a dent forming in it
"It was not a waste, sister!" He spat out "Besides you'd know all about bedding ceremonies, seeing that you kept Robb Starks bed warm as you brought only shame to this family." he remarked
Joanna wanted to argue back but the sweet voice of Margaery called "My love, come back to me." She spoke "It's time for my fathers toast."
He turned his back to Joanna returning to his bride "How do you expect me to toast without wine?" he asked as he turned to Tyrion.
"Uncle, you can be my cupbearer."
Joanna sat back down as she apologetically looked to her uncle. Both rolling their eyes at Joffreys antics "Your grace does me a great honour." Tyrion deadpanned
"It's not mean to be an honour." Joffrey insulted his uncle. Tyrion walked around the table picking up the empty goblet as he handed it to Joffrey. Tommen reached across Sansa to hand his sister a table cloth to dry her head
"What good is an empty cup?" Joffrey continued to make a spectacle of his family "Fill it." he commanded his uncle
Joanna shook her head in disapproval watching the enjoyment of her mothers face. With a cup of wine he handed it to Joffrey, but like always he would not make it easy "Kneel before your king." Joffrey ordered but Tyrion stood his ground and refused to kneel "I said kneel!" His voice yelled. The uncle and nephew glaring to one another as Joanna wiped the blood off her palms with an already wine stained cloth.
"Look, the pie!" Margaery optimistically announced distracting everyone from the fire brewing between the Lannisters. Everyone turned to the gigantic pie carried by four men as the cheerful mood slowly returned.
Joanna glanced to the garden to see the hooded figure waiting. They shook her head as she looked back to Joffrey and Margaery "Uncle, don't just stand there like a fool! Serve me more wine!" Like the spoilt brat that he is Joffrey demanded. Tyrion was just as irritated as Joanna as he walked towards the king to hand him another cup of wine
"If it pleases your grace, I think your sister is very tired. Shall I suggest she dry off and-"
"No!" Joffrey argued "No, she is to stay where she is..." he began to cough as Joanna gripped her hand tightly around Sansa's. "No... you will wait her sister. You-" Joffreys' coughs becoming more desperate
"Your grace?" Tyrion cautiously asked
"It's nothing!" Joffrey barked back gripping his neck. Margaery froze as the realization hit her
"He's choking!" She cried out
"Help the poor boy!" Olenna demanded as Joanna turned to see the hooded figure nod his head. "Idiots, help your king!" Olenna yelled as the kingsguards, Cersei and Tywin left their chairs in attempt to aid Joffrey. He fell to his knees as everyone in audience gasped to their king.
"It's now or never." She queietly spoke as she pulled Sansa hand in hand running away from the scene. Screams and panic erupted as Joffrey slowly choked on his breath, blood coming from his eyes and mouth as Joanna and Sansa ran as fast they could away from the scene. They reached the hooded figure who handed them cloaks and the two girls hid their idenetities.
The hidden figure handing them saddles as Joanna and Sansa mounted their horses. Sansa gripping above Joanna belly tightly as she bolted with them out of the Red Keep's court yard. The screams growing silent as nothing but drunk yells filled their hears as the rode down the streets of Flea Bottom. Sansa felt a rush of adrenaline as Joanna clung her arm as they ran towards the docks were the hooded figure stood at the ready at a ship.
Sansa was unable to recognize the ship nor who stood by its wheel. She held the cloak over her red hair as she followed behind Joanna. Aboarding the ship as Joanna rushed past the crew to beneath the ship as she halted underneath the wooden floor to remove her cloak.
Both girl completely out of breath as the felt the ship took a sail. Joanna knelt down to the floor gripping her belly as she tried catching her breath. And then she felt it, five strong kicks
"The babe is fine. We made it." she huffed out of breath as Sansa sunk down the wall to sit across from Joanna
"I don't understand-" but the clicks of boots on the stairs silenced the pair. Sansa's losing colour as the hooded figure walked down the stairs. They were stall and studious as Joanna ran into their arms. Stepping back as they revealed themselves
A woman with tanned skin and long brown hair braided to the back revealed themselves "Are you two fine? Is the babe?" Joanna laughed with tears in her eyes as she nodded her head
"We're fine Ayame. We made it out just in time." Sansa had never felt more confused as the woman stood in front of them "Where is he?" Joanna asked.
The door down a boats as the steps of another filled the passage way. Sansa's heart beating so hard against her chest as she felt disoriented. Joanna felt a sense of relief as she welcomed the familiar face
"Took you long enough to show your face. I was beginning to think you've grown shy." Joanna joked as Sansa recognized who it was
"It's not like you've ever made your escape plans easy for me, is it?" Brynden Tully laughed as he embraced the young princess. The three turned to face a confused and stunned Sansa
"Joanna-" She struggled to find the words, stammering "Where are we-"
"Don't worry little Cat, you're safe and you're on your way home." Brynden Tully reassured Sansa as their ship sailed away into the distance. Joanna walked to Sansa as she held her hand
"Joanna, I don't understand what's happened!" Sansa yelled in frustration, fear and confusion. "What happened to Joffrey? When did you get the time to plan all of this."
Joannas hands travelled to Sansa's shoulder comforting her "I'll explain everything but all you need to know is where going back North."
