10. Closing Night

CHAPTER TEN
CLOSING NIGHT

◥✤◤

News was spreading fast that the Twilight Drive-In had been sold and purchased by an anonymous buyer. Luna had been there with her friends twice during the summer when they had gone to go see West Side Story and Sunset Boulevard, although they stayed in the back mostly because all the good spots were always taken but also because all of them wouldn't be able to see the movie from inside the car. Someone did try to stop the drive-in from getting shut down but their words fell on deaf ears since it was still gonna be shut down. So on the last day, they were going to play the movie Rebel Without a Cause and the five friends were very interested in going for this one last movie at the Twilight Drive-In.

"You think soundproofing the garage can wait?" Luna asked as she and her friends left the school building.

"This is the last day to go to the Twilight Drive-In and after tonight, we'll never be able to go again," Maya replied.

"Besides, we're finally done cleaning the music room and since everyone pretty much forgot about it, they won't notice us practicing in the mornings before school so we have a secure place to practice for a while now," Peyton said and the others nodded. "Plus we won't have to listen to Rosalie's bitching and no one can cut off the power in mid guitar solo."

Naomi elbowed the blonde girl in the ribs and scowled at her. "Be nice!" she said in a scolding manner.

"Why? Ever since Luna started this band and we've built our own website, started our own YouTube channel and recorded and performed all the songs Luna spent time and effort writing, all Rosalie has ever done is shit on our band, our music and our performances," Peyton said and Luna sighed.

"You're not wrong but maybe Naomi isn't so wrong either. The good thing about this is that while we have a place to practice with no interruptions, Rosalie can have all the peace and quiet she wants and play her own loud sad music as much as she wishes. I bet that by the time we get the garage soundproofed and move all our stuff inside, she'll be a lot better and won't be able to hear the noise as much," Luna said as she turned around to look at all her friends. "For all we know, she might be over the whole thing and more tolerable by then."

"I hope you're right, Luna," Kai said and Luna bit the inside of her cheek.

She had no idea if Rosalie would be over her breakup by then or if she would ever be over it. Peyton made a good point when she brought up that how all Rosalie ever did since Luna started her band and put her music out there was put down all her hard work to get the band as far as it had gotten in the last year. But she was still her sister and she was going through something and the empathetic part of her couldn't help but feel bad for Rosalie. Just because her sister was an asshole, didn't necessarily mean that she had to but they were sisters so she would live by that logic for only five minutes before they go back to hating each other's guts and avoiding each other outside of the house.

"Should we get there early so we can get a good spot?" Maya asked.

"All the good spots will be taken by Northsiders and we'll have to stand in the back," Peyton said while rolling her eyes.

"We can still make this closing night fun. We'll have plenty of snacks and drinks and one of you can sit on my shoulders," Kai suggested and everyone looked at Luna who only looked back at them.

"I am not sitting on your shoulders, Kai," she said and all her friends laughed.

"You are literally the shortest one out of all of us. If anyone needs to sit on Kai's shoulders to see the screen, it's you," Naomi said.

"You do it then since you're not exactly able to reach the top shelf either," Luna scoffed while glaring at the pink haired girl.

"Now that's low, even for you," she said but Luna only shrugged her shoulders with a victorious grin.

"We can just drop our bags at home and then make our way over there together," she said. "We'll meet up in front of the gas station at Lorimer Street an hour before the movie starts."

"Sounds good to me," Maya said while everyone else nodded and agreed.

At one point on their way home from school, they split up and Luna closed the door once she was inside her house. She didn't hear the sound of her mother's footsteps anywhere so she figured she was working an afternoon shift. She went upstairs to her room to put her bag down and grabbed a fresh pair of clothes to change into after taking a shower. Since it was still August, it was warm outside so the sweat would become uncomfortable after finishing school and walking all the way home and since she had time before the movie started, she figured she might as well wash off all the sweat before meeting up with her friends.

Once she was finished, she blow dried her hair and brushed all the knots and tangles out of it before going back to her room to get dressed. She put on a pair of black ripped thigh high stockings and a black mid thigh denim skirt. She tucked the hem of her fitted dark grey long sleeved shirt into her skirt and put her hair into two messy space buns with two front pieces framing her face and a black heart choker around her neck because she felt like it. As soon as she had her black eyeliner and wine red lipstick on, she put on her black platform boots and grabbed her bag. She still had plenty of time before she had to meet up with her friends at the gas station so she might as well get some of her work done.

As the sky started to get darker, she checked the time on her phone as it finished charging and realized that she had half an hour to meet her friends. She grabbed her wallet and keys and put them in the pockets of her leather jacket and turned off the light before heading downstairs. She knocked on Rosalie's door as she was passing by but didn't hear anything from inside.

"Rosalie, don't kill me, but I'm coming in," Luna said as she turned the knob and opened the door.

When she looked inside her sister's room, there was nobody inside. She closed the door and typed out a message to her asking her where she was and if she was okay. Rosalie responded by telling her that she was with her friend and that she was fine. Feeling like everything was okay, Luna left the house with the door locked and texted her mother to let her know where she was going. The sky had turned pitch black by the time she got to the gas station and she waited outside while looking around for her friends. She thought about going inside the store to get snacks for the movie or just wait and get snacks from the stand.

     "Luna!"

The dark haired girl turned around and saw Maya walking over to her. She smiled as she greeted her friend while also noticing that the others didn't show up yet.

"Are the others on their way?" Luna asked.

"Yeah, they said they're almost here," Maya answered with a short nod.

After five more minutes, the rest of their group did arrive at the gas station and the five of them started heading to the drive-in. Once they got there, they got a couple of snacks and drinks from the snack stand and found an adequate space in the back where all the Serpents and other Southsiders would sit. After a while, the movie did start and they actually found themselves enjoying it. Unfortunately, it was hard when the other Southsiders were making noise and bothering everybody else but they still tried to enjoy the movie nonetheless. Eventually, someone did try to get them to be quiet but all they did was hiss back like immature children.

Naomi sighed as she rolled her eyes. "And this is why people think we're nothing more than Southside trash," she said before stuffing her mouth with more popcorn.

Not even a minute later, a girl who was dressed in clothing that looked like it was worth more than what Luna and the band would make at a performance stood up and glared at the Southsiders in the back. "Hey! You know what happens to a snake when a Louboutin heel steps on it? Shut the hell up or you'll find out," she said and everyone else in the drive-in cheered before she sat back down.

"That girl has a death wish," Peyton said dully while chewing on a piece of red licorice.

"At least they stopped making noise," Maya said as she shrugged her shoulders.

"I bet she lives on the Northside anyway. Her clothes are worth more than my future," Kai chuckled before taking a sip of his soda and Luna snickered before grabbing the empty popcorn bucket.

"I'm gonna go get us a refill. Do you guys want anything?" she asked.

     "I'm good," Kai answered.

"I'll have a Pepsi and some M&M's but with no nuts," Peyton said.

"I could go for a Pepsi too," Maya said.

"Some more licorice and gummy worms, please," Naomi said and Luna nodded before heading to the snack stand.

Once it was her turn, she placed the empty popcorn bucket and asked for a refill with two Pepsis, M&M's, gummy worms and red licorice. Once everything was ready, she tried to carry everything back to her friends and cursed to herself for not asking one of them to help her carry all the snacks and drinks. She nearly dropped everything as she stopped abruptly when she realized that somebody was right in front of her and she nearly walked right into them. She looked up and realized it was Sweet Pea who had a lopsided smile on his face which was different from the usual grumpy face she always saw when they were in school.

"You look like you could use some help with all of those," he said.

"Actually, that would be really great," she replied and laughed as Sweet Pea took some of the snacks out of her arms. "I should've asked one of my friends to come with me but here I am trying to carry all of this in my tiny arms."

Sweet Pea laughed as the both of them carried everything back to Luna's group of friends. The others casually greeted him when they saw the two of them with all the snacks and drinks and took what they asked for.

"Did you also come to see the drive-in's last show?" Peyton asked.

"More or less," Sweet Pea replied. "I'm here with Fangs and Toni."

"Do you guys wanna sit with us until the movie ends? I think we got enough snacks," Maya offered.

"That would be great. I'll just go get them," Sweet Pea said before walking off to get his friends.

"You know, the more I talk to him, the less intimidating he gets," Kai said and Naomi nodded in agreement.

"I think our dear friend Luna wowed that resting bitch face off of him with her killer performance at the Whyte Wyrm," she said while smirking at Luna who only glared at her friend.

"Say something like that again and I'll beat you with my guitar," she replied right before Sweet Pea returned with Fangs and Toni.

The three of them joined the group and enjoyed the rest of the movie together as much as they could for the final night. After that, the drive-in was going to close and be torn down to rubble so whoever bought it could do whatever the hell they wanted with the pieces. With everything that happened over the summer and the first few weeks of school, this was one of the few good things Luna and her friends could enjoy without all the investigations and conspiracies going on.
