My Tree
I lean back against my branch, letting my thoughts drift with the wind. I can feel the great maple swaying under and around me.
I'd spent a lot of time in this tree over the years. It's my safe place, my haven. I come here to think, to be alone.
It is particularly beautiful at this time of year, when the air is hot and the cool shady leaves whisper sweet nothings in the breeze.
I look down and see the patchwork quilt of colors that is my dad's garden. There are red and yellow roses, white and blue columbines, pink snapdragons and bleeding hearts, and so many other things I can't remember the names of half of it.
Green clematis stippled with little white flowers clings to the wire mesh slung over my bedroom window, and the vines drape over the clear glass. It's the reason I have no curtains.
Threaded amongst the clematis is my dad's hops plant.
I can see it all from where I sit in my tree. Sweat clings lightly to my skin, and the cool breeze slips through the leaves to caress my hot face.
From inside the house I can just barely make out the sound of my spoiled younger brother's screams. The sound is distant, but still audible all the same.
The world is peaceful outside in my tree. It's nice, soothing, calming, but I can't focus on it.
I carefully stand, grasping the thick trunk to steady myself. I reach up, gripping a higher branch and pulling myself up.
I continue to climb until I've reached the highest branch I can get to without the threat of falling. I pause, listening. Nothing but the sweet whispering leaves can be heard from where I am now.
That's exactly what I want.
I settle myself on my new branch, and I take a deep relaxing breath.
"Lizzy! Are you up there?"
I sigh.
Life hates me.

I think this was two or three days ago? I've been crazy bored lately. (Because my internet connection is exceedingly fickle. *grumble-grumble-grumble...*) ☺
Till next time!
