I Forgive You
With the Bat Clan...
The three Bats were waiting in an empty waiting room. There was no one else there and there were security staff on the other side of the locked door. All the windows had their blinds shut. And of course, he made sure all the cameras were turned off.
So they had their masks off. And Batman wasn't the Dark Knight right now. He was just Bruce Wayne, adoptive father of Dick Grayson.
His son... who was on his death bed.
Bruce miserably laughed to himself.
One son lost and possibly another one tonight.
"Why did he do it Bruce?"
Bruce looked at Tim. Then Barbara. Then told them what the note said.
Barbara gasped and Tim made a sound like he was gonna be sick.
"So that's why he... jumped?"
Bruce nodded.
"When Nightwing... Dick, was younger he told me that if he ever had a choice in how he died he would want to go the same way his parents did."
Both of them looked beyond upset at this point and were about to say something when someone knocked at the door.
Batgirl and Robin quickly slapped their masks back on and Batman quickly pulled his cowl back over his face right as a doctor came in.
But he didn't look to happy.
"Batman... Nightwing is starting to wake up..."
"But?" Batman pressed.
The doctor looked quite uncomfortable.
"He is... he is not doing to well. I'm sorry. Please, come see him."
The Bat Clan followed the doctor into the room to see the original Young Justice team gathered around the hospital bed. A weeping Wally was kneeling at Dick's side, grasping his pale hand. The Bats came closer, Connor and Kaldur stepped aside to give them some room.
Kaldur stood beside Connor with a few silent tears running down his face while Connor held a crying M'gann close with a deep frown on his face and with a few silent tears as well.
And Artemis was standing behind Wally, her hands on his back comfortingly. She was silently crying as well.
Batman listened in with a sad frown at what the speedster was saying.
"I'm so sorry Dick, I never meant any of that! I was just so angry... I'm so sorry. You are an amazing friend and you're the best brother I could ever hope for! I'm so sorry I wasn't there for you... I shouldn't have let you deal with everything on your own! I was the horrible brother and friend! I'm so sorry Dick... please forgive me..."
A weak, strangled sound came from the fallen bird's throat that made everyone's head shoot up.
He was awake! And he was trying to talk!
But then he lifted up his hand and put it over his face... and slowly tore away his mask.
The original team had bated breath as they all, except Wally, would finally see their long time friend without a mask or sunglasses.
Though Dick seemed to be having trouble even just removing his mask as his hand kept shaking so Wally slowly and gently finished removing it for him.
And his baby blue eyes were revealed. But... they were now dull.
After slowly looking around the room as if he was in a daze, Dick slowly turned to look at Wally who still had tears falling down his face, some of which landed on the bed sheets and Dick's hand.
His eyes finally seemed to focus as he said in a rattling breath:
"I've already forgiven you. Brother."
Dick gave a weak smile as Wally let out a deep sigh. But then his eyes closed and a shrill alarm sounded throuoght the room.
"Dick? Dick! Don't leave us! God, don't die on us now!" screamed Wally.
Batman came around Wally and held his son's face in his hands.
"Richard... Dick! Nightwing! You have to stay awake!"
Tim and Barbara came up to the other side.
"C'mon 'Wing! You... you can't leave us! You're like my brother!" pleaded Tim.
"Damn it... if you leave me here I'm going to kill you!" threatened Barbara.
Dick slowly opened his eyes but with a pained expression.
"I'm sorry... but they're waiting for me... Timmy, Babs... Dad. I love you guys so much..."
Tim closed his eyes, tears gushing from his eyes and Barbara just broke down. Bruce's heart clenched at the word "Dad" and gripped Dick's shoulder gently.
Doctors and nurses came rushing in but Dick raised up a hand.
"No..." he rasped.
He knew there was nothing they could do. At least let him have his last few minutes in peace.
Now the team gathered around closer so that he could now see everyone.
"I know I've made mistakes. Some that can never be forgiven and I-I'm s-sorry..."
He took a minute to catch his breath, his eyes slowly closing and opening.
"But I really am sorry... All of you mean so much to me... Please, no one blame yourself... Especially you
W-Wally... I don't blame any of you..."
Dick let out a shaky sigh as a small trickle of blood flowed from his mouth.
Batman moved his hand to his son's cheek as Dick managed another small smile.
"Thank you f-for e-everything dad... please tell A-Alfred as well..."
The Bat slowly nods his head.
Everyone in the room lays a hand on the first Boy Wonder all at once to comfort themselves as much as Dick.
Dick has a small smile on his face as he closes his eyes... and gives his last shuddering breath.
It was silent for a moment as one of the doctors disconnected the machines and covered him with a white sheet.
It remained silent as they were all ushered into a quiet and private room, however Bruce stayed with Dick's body for a few more moments.
As soon as the door shut the sobs broke out.
They hugged and comforted each other and Tim and Barbara stayed within Bruce's arms reach when he entered the room fifteen minutes later.
The sobs and cries did not stop until morning. And that was only because everyone cried themselves to sleep.
But as the sun rose that first morning without Dick Grayson, a robin perched outside on the single windowsill of the room.
The bird stayed only for a moment, as if making sure they were all okay, and then spread his wings and flew into the rising sun.
Um... I'm sorry? I regret nothing though!
Hmmm.... Epilogue or no?
