Burt Hummel was not a patient man. He wasn't understanding either. Which is why he was currently yelling at the nice lady at the front desk.
"I want to see my son!" He shouted, he knew the lady wanted to help but her job prevented her from doing so, she had told him so many times, but who else was he going to yell at? And who else was going to listen?
"Sir, please-"
"Let me see my son! He needs me!" Burt slammed his fists on the desk.
"He's-"
"Resting, I know." Burt sighed, "You've told me so many times. But I don't see why I can't go in an' see him. I won't disturb him, heck, I won't even make a sound. I just wanna see my boy." His voice cracked slightly.
The woman sighed, turning to fiddle with her computer before looking back at him, "You can go through and see Mr. Hummel now, uh, Mr. Hummel."
Burt let out a sigh of relief and hastily followed the lady's directions, almost running down the corridors and pausing at the door for Ward E.
He breathed in heavily, preparing himself before pushing open the door and looking around for Kurt's bed.
He noticed a bed on the far left corner which housed a small, fragile sleeping boy. His son.
Burt exhaled shakily as he edged closer to the bed. He held in a badly hidden gasp at the sight of the boy.
He had red-stained bandages wrapped around both of his arms and one leg. His other leg wasn't bandaged but was badly bruised, his usually porcelain skin appearing as though a painter had splattered blue, purple and yellow paint over a canvas.
He had a bandage wrapped around his head as well, covering both of his eyes. His hair was messy and sticking up everywhere, the sight of it reminded Burt of Kurt's experimentation with hair dye and how badly red had contrasted with his hair. This was no different.
His lip was cut and his cheek was swollen, plasters covered a graze on his chin and his ear.
Burt felt faint and he quickly sat down in a chair next to the hospital bed. He reached out hesitantly to delicately grab his son's hand, running his fingers over the only part of the skin that wasn't cut.
Suddenly Kurt breathed out deeply through his nose and inhaled raggedly through his mouth before he fell silent again.

The New Directions were gathered outside the McKinley High main entrance. They had each been called out of their lessons one by one by Mr. Schuester to tell them of the terrible accident one of their own had gotten into the previous night.
Each explanation was the same. It began with Mr. Schue asking if they had noticed that Kurt wasn't in any lessons that day before the Spanish teacher apologised for his bluntness and then proceeded to almost blurt out what had happened to their friend. He had continued on to explain the details of the accident and attempt to comfort them but no one had heard a word he'd said after he had spat out the bad news.
Kurt had been driving back home from a friend's house. It was dark and Kurt was tired. He was about 5 minutes from home when a crash ahead of him caused one car to fly off the road and the second to come hurtling full speed at Kurt's front window. He had suffered from major bruising, lacerations and abrasion, minor burns on both of his legs and possible concussion. He was yet to wake after being unconscious for over 12 hours but there were currently no signs of any fatal organ damage.
20 minutes later the New Directions still hadn't said a word to each other. They all say emotionless and silent around Kurt's bed, waiting and hoping for the boy to gain consciousness soon.
-_-_-
It was exactly 6 hours later when Kurt stirred. His heart monitor quickened dramatically as he moaned and twisted around as two nurses came flooding into the room. One nurse began fiddling with his heart monitor whilst the other began checking on him.
Eventually, when his heart rate hadn't slowed, the nurses were forced to place Kurt under anaesthetic as they continued to fiddle with his bandages.
4 hours later. The same thing. Kurt awoke, crying and whining and the same two nurses came rushing in, one fiddling with the heart monitor and the other checking on Kurt before placing Kurt back under anaesthetic.
This continued for 7 more hours. The glee kids each refused to leave the hospital. They took it in turns to go down to the cafe and buy everyone drinks and food.
Eventually Kurt awoke and his heart rate kept at a steady pace for long enough to satisfy the nurses. He was allowed to stay awake.
After the nurses left, Kurt continued to writhed around on the bed for a while before Burt finally spoke up.
"Hey, Kurt. How you doin'?"
Kurt froze, tilting his head slightly in his father's direction before calling out hesitantly, "Dad?"
"Yeah, it's me."
"Dad, I can't see."
Burt swallows thickly, Kurt sounded so young, "Yeah, um, your eyes are wrapped in bandages."
"It hurts, dad."
"Where?"
"Everywhere."
Mercedes began crying silently, Rachel, Quinn and Tina clutching onto her as they began sobbing quietly with her.
"You'll be alright, my boy. Do you remember what happened?"
"I just remember driving home from Blaine's house and it- it was really dark and I heard this really loud, like, crash and then I felt so much pain but then it just stopped and I don't remember anything else."
Burt nodded before realising Kurt couldn't see him, "That's right. You were in an accident. They, uh, it got you really bad, Kurt. But you're gonna be okay."
"Is Blaine here?"
"No, Blaine doesn't know."
"Why not?" Kurt's heart monitor began beating slightly faster.
"Now calm down, Kurt. Blaine's just busy with school an' I don't- I don't wanna bother him. I'm sure he has work to do an-"
"It wouldn't bother him! Blaine loves me, dad! He needs to know! Call him now! Where's my phone? Give me my phone."
Puck frowned at Sam when Kurt mentioned the word 'love' but thought better than to say anything.
Burt eyes the monitor which continued to increase its speed of beeping, "I'll call 'im for ya. You can't see."
Burt reached for Kurt's phone and scrolled through his contacts before pressing down on the name Blaine and holding the phone to his ear.
It answered almost immediately and Blaine's voice drawled low and sultry into Burt's ear, "Hi sexy."
"Anderson." Burt snapped, amused by Blaine's spluttering, "I'm calling to tell ya that Kurt got in an accident."
Blaine's embarrassment immediately ceased and was replaced with worry, "What? Is he alright?"
"He's uh, he's not doing too good. He's awake, though. An' he wants you to come see him. Get here soon."
Burt hung up before turning to his son, "He'll be here soon."
"Thanks, dad." Kurt muttered, his heart monitor slowing down.
-_-_-
Blaine arrived about 10 minutes later, rushing through the front doors and running up to the front desk, shouting "I'm here to see-" he broke himself off, lowering his voice to the normal, acceptable standards of talk before restarting, "I'm here to see Kurt Hummel."
The woman directed him to Ward E and he made his way down the corridors, taking his time to prepare himself for what he might see. Would Kurt's beautiful face be hurt? Blaine didn't even want to think about Kurt in pain.
He approached the door to the ward Kurt was in and the sound of a heart monitor going wild and people shouting immediately filled his ears.
He quickly shoved open the door, glancing around the room once before he looked to his left and found his boyfriend struggling under a two pairs of hands which fought to hold him down as a nurse went between pressing buttons on the heart monitor and checking his temperature and other check ups.
Another nurse who, along with Burt, was struggling to hold Kurt down was yelling, "Everyone needs to get out! Give him space! Leave the room! Now, go!"
Blaine's eyes widened and the nurse turned to him and narrowed her eyes, "Get out!"
Suddenly a man who was previously sat with another patient stood up and began to help, pulling the glee kids up and pushing them towards the door, he attempted to shove Blaine back through but Blaine ducked under his arm and darted through the crowd of Glee kids before arriving at the foot of Kurt's hospital bed.
"Kurt!" Blaine yelled over the chaos, suddenly Kurt stopped writhing on the bed.
"Blaine?" Kurt whispered and suddenly Blaine was there, pushing the glaring nurse out of the way to delicately hold Kurt's hand.
Kurt's heart rate slowed and the heart monitor returned to normal.
"Blaine." Kurt repeated, reaching around to wrap an arm around Blaine's neck and pull him into a small one-sides hug.
It's not that Blaine didn't want to hug Kurt. No, Blaine would give anything to scoop Kurt up into his arms right now and never let him go. But he was scared of hurting Kurt. The boy looked so broken. And when Blaine gently nuzzled his face into the crook of Kurt's neck he could no longer smell Kurt's natural scent of vanilla but instead all he could smell was the sticky, horrible smell of blood.
The New Directions watched in awe as this random guy they'd never seen before calmed Kurt down by doing as little as holding Kurt's hand and saying his name. Who was this guy? And how did he know Kurt?
A while later when the doctors came in to examine Kurt, everyone was sent to wait outside and the New Directions had their chance.
"So you're Blaine, I take it?" Rachel asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Uh, yeah?"
"How d'you know Kurt?" Puck demanded.
"We, uh, we met when you sent Kurt to spy on Dalton."
"So you're a stick up private school boy, huh?" Santana folded her arms over her chest.
"Um, no?"
"So it's your fault Kurt got into the accident." Tina growled.
"What? No!" Blaine cried.
"He was driving home from your house though." Rachel pointed out.
"Yes, but that doesn't mean it's my fault! I would never hurt Kurt!"
"How do you know my boy?" Mercedes asked.
"I-I told you." Blaine looked at the floor, "Kurt came to spy on Dalton and-"
"No. Not how you met. How do you know him?" Mercedes asked threateningly.
"Uh, he's, uh, he's my boyfriend." Blaine lifted his head up.
Finn's mouth dropped, "What the hell? Why didn't he tell me he has a boyfriend?"
"Since when?" Rachel scowled.
"For about 3 months."
"Why wouldn't he tell us? I swear, that kid never tells me anything." Finn threw his hands in the air and turned around to walk towards a chair, his muttering growing quieter as he walked until it silenced, "I spend my time trying to get to know him but-"
"Kurt would tell us. You're just lying so we don't get mad at you." Mercedes placed a hand on her hip.
"I swear I'm not lying! If I was lying I would be incredibly sad because my life has never been better now I have Kurt in it."
Mercedes narrowed her eyes as she stepped back to examine the boy. She took in his Dalton uniform, his tie loose around his neck and a bit of his shirt coming out of his pants. His hair which looked as though Blaine had attempted to tame it with gel was breaking free and a few curls were sticking up.
Santana, who had done the same as Mercedes spoke up first, "I can see why Kurt would like him though. I'm gay as they come but I would tap that ass."
"Seems as though Blaine is gay as they come as well." Quinn muttered before taking this moment to walk over and try to woo Finn.
"Okay, so let's say you and Kurt are dating-" Mercedes began.
"We are." Blaine grinned when Mercedes huffed.
"Let's say you are. You better be treating him right otherwise I'll-"
"Go all Lima heights on your sorry little ass." Santana interrupted and Mercedes whined at being interrupted for the second time.
"Whatever." Mercedes threw her hands in the air, "What Santana said. Just don't hurt our boy, Blaine."
"We can go back in now." Burt muttered solemnly, walking emotionless back to the ward. Burt had stayed with Kurt and had been told by the doctor everything that was going on with Kurt.
"Okay," the doctor began as everyone walked in, "There's no easy way to say this. I hate this part." He laughed awkwardly before pulling his face into a serious position and speaking in a completely professional voice, "Kurt Hummel has suffered from major bruising, lacerations and abrasion and minor burns on both legs and minor concussion after being involved in a car accident. He was unconscious for a total of 29 hours and 42 minutes. No organ damage. Unfortunately, he has been rendered blind. And will most likely stay that way until further advances in the medical field. On the bright side, he is extremely lucky for receiving no broken or fractured bones."
"Lucky to have no broken or fractured bones? I'm pretty sure he'd take that any day over being blind!" Puck yelled.
And then every was shouting and screaming at each other and at the doctor.
Blaine glanced back at his boyfriend who was now sat up with his back against the head of the bed. His head was bowed and his body was shaking violently.
Blaine approached the bed carefully, "Kurt?"
And then Kurt whimpered and reached out for Blaine. Blaine sighed brokenly, sitting on the edge of the bed and allowing Kurt to cry into his shoulder as Blaine wrapped an arm around his boyfriend's waist and pulled him closer, leaning his head against Kurt's and pressing a kiss to Kurt's hair.
Eventually Kurt pulled back to whisper, "I understand if you don't want to be with me anymore. Thanks for-"
"Kurt," Blaine laughed sadly, "I still want to be with you. I love you, stupid. It'll be tough, I know. But we'll make it through."
"You-you said you love me."
"I do love you. I love you so much, Kurt Hummel. And this one little fork in the road isn't going to make me drive the other way."
"This isn't a little fork in the road, though. It's like a huge roundabout. There's so many different directions this could take us."
"I'm willing to suffer them all. I'm sure we'd make it down the right exit off the roundabout at some point."
"Blaine?"
"Yeah?"
"Why are we talking about roundabouts."
And then they were both laughing, laughing so loud that the fighting and yelling in the room stopped as everyone turned to look at the couple on the bed, Kurt's legs resting on top of Blaine's and the pair of them so close it was like they were in their own little world.
No one could quite understand how they could be laughing at a time like this.
Burt smiled as he watched his son lean up to whisper something in Blaine's ear which caused the boy to grin widely and press a gentle kiss to Kurt's cheek.
It would be tough, he knew that and he was sure his boys knew that. But he knew that as long as they had each other, they would both live a happy life together.
