The White Spirit

There was once a little girl who was only 7 at one time. Now she's an elder and has many tales about her life to share. The Blackbird also told the tale with her multiple times. One particularly story is about the Blackbird and the White Tree.

Girl's POV:

Me and my older brother, who was only 10 at the time, ventured into the white forest. It was cold and snowed all the time in Russia. The trees are always bare and the ground was covered in white dust.

We needed to pass through this forest to get to the next town. This route was the most dangerous one in the whole entire land. Now you are wondering why we were crossing through the most dangerous forest? We are orphans and weren't educated in most things. Geography being the main thing nobody educated us in.

My fingers were going red from the cold air biting at them and my nose was turning a cherry red. Little fogs of air escaped my pale lips and we both couldn't see anything far away from us.

Slivery flakes escaped from the cloudy sky and drifted down towards the pale ground. Glittering in the bright moon's light. The moon was our only friend. Along with the lonely blackbird that soared high in the sky. Following our every moves.

A few minutes had passed and the blackbird still followed our every moves. Staring at us with its beady eyes. At first it was creeping me out but soon found comfort in the blackbird.

A few hours later, we stood in front of a big white tree and scattered behind it was tiny cabins. The white tree seemed like a barricade but what was it shielding away from the village. Thief's, criminals, the wild animals??

When we went to pass through the white tree, but it spoke in a deep and loud voice, "Who dares to pass me?! Is it you pesky mortals?! What do you want?!"

"No Madam, we are just crossing through this forest because we need some food. We need shelter and warmth from this deadly winter. This winter will kill us both if we stay out here longer then we have too", my gentle brother explained.

The white tree stood in place but a woman, who was tall and beautiful, pulled away from the tree. Like she was part of the tree and was camouflaging into it. She was wearing an elegant dress with a coat draped around her pale shoulders. Her feet were bare and showed gracefulness in the way she walked towards us.

In a more calmer tone, she said, "Welcome mortals, to our small village. You shall find food and warmth here. Put your utmost trust in us and we shall provide you with everything your heart truly desires."

In awe, I had questioned her back, "Can we have cookies with hot milk?! Oh, and a nice fireplace with warm blankets?!"

The young lady laughed lightly at me and replied back, "Yes little one. You can have all the homemade cookies and all the finest milks in this world. The high quality blankets and the warmest fire," she then asked my elder brother, "You, young man, what shall I grant you with. What does your heart desire?"

My brother replied back, "I only desire three things. Warmth, food, and love."

The young lady laughed at him gently and said, "I can give you the warmest fire, the whole entire food in this world, and the love only person can give to you."

I had jumped up and down in joy. In the corner of my eye, I saw the little blackbird bow it's head down in... 'shame'? I couldn't quite see from my point of view because the kind lady escorted us into the town immediately.

Blackbird's POV:

I've been following these mortals for a few hours. They all ended up having the same fate. Being tricked by the white spirit and getting themselves killed by her kindness. Following their greedy desires that nobody can grant them. Only they can seek what they truly desire.

I've finally had enough of this pesky white spirit. Killing innocent mortals with their greed. I'm going to put that white spirit down for good. The tree can stay but its spirit, the woman, must definitely go.

I quickly morphed from a blackbird into an African woman. My dark skin glowed in the cold winter. Long dark curly hair drifted down my back to my waist. I wore an elegant long flowing black dress, that reached to my ankle, with a fur coat draped around my arms and shoulders. My feet were kept warm with long fuzzy socks that reached to my knees.

The snow became imprinted with the shape of my small feet and I gracefully walked into the town. Witches and wizards bowed down to me. Fear was written all over their bodies and most looked tense. Like every wrong move would get them burnt at the stake.

Bending down in front of them in a graceful manner, I said clearly and loudly for them to hear, "Fear not mighty wizards and witches. For I am the great blackbird. I bring peace and harmony for all. The white spirit will be eliminated tonight and you all shall sleep with no worry."

An old witch looked up at me with her pale blue eyes and said in a warm voice, "Darling, are you the real black bird? The mighty one that people speak of? Can we really be in peace?"

"Yes I am the mighty blackbird, you all can be in peace if you tell me where the spirit is and where the innocent mortals were taken, too", I replied back.

All of them looked up at me and pointed towards a cabin that was nestled in the middle of the village. Smoke was drifting out of the chimney and the smell of food wafted into the air. I walked quickly to the cabin and barged through the door.

The kids were seated on wooden chairs with quilts draped around their small and fragile bodies. Foods and drinks of all kinds was spread all around the round wooden table. Cookies, pies, all sorts of meat, berries, fruits, a jug of water and the finest milk.

Girl's POV:

We were about to eat the delicious food, the young witch had made for us, when the most stunning woman barged right into the room. Her posture screamed power and elegance. I scooted closer to my elder brother in fear. He wrapped his arms protectively around me and faced towards the woman.

The woman realized that she had frightened us both and spoke in a calm tone, "Little ones, don't fear me because I am the blackbird. The one who will protect you from harm and death until you grow old. Now, come forward little ones and I shall eliminate this spirit and threat from you."

We were hesitant at first but walked forward timidly. Not knowing if she was the real threat or not. Once we got near her, she wrapped her arms around us in a protective manner and drew us behind her.

Glaring at the lady, she bellowed out loud in more stern voice, "You! How dare you trick these innocent souls! These mortals are just little kids. They have just opened their eyes and have only seen a glimpse of this world. They also haven't even matured yet. How can you even bare to hurt them. I've seen horrid things in this. Traveled through the scorching deserts, the mighty jungles, the Great Plains, and now, these deadly tundras. But you. You aren't gonna hurt another soul! I'm going to eliminate you and send you away from this world for good."

I stared at her in awe and my brother had a look of interest on his face. Like she had the most thrilling tales to share. The room turned dark immediately because the Blackbird had used the wind to diminish the warm fire.

The cold air rushed to me at once but suddenly. Warmth and light erupted around the room and we saw the spirit struggling against the Blackbird. They were throwing  quick punches at each other and the Blackbird was using some sort of spiritual magic. Like the air was dancing around them.

My brother backed us towards the door and the air was soon screaming around the white spirit. Slashing at her pale body and wrapping itself around her body tightly. The white spirit stood no absolute chance against the Blackbird.

After a few minutes of watching the fight. We saw the white spirit surrender in defeat to the Blackbird.

The weakened spirit cried out, "Have mercy! You won, you are the strongest one. I stand no chance against you. Have mercy on me! Please!"

The Blackbird laughed out and sternly said, "Mercy. You made me laugh. Did you show any mercy for the innocent souls? The ones who caused no harm in this world?"

The spirit cried out, "I was just protecting this village. All I wanted was power but now that has made me greedy."

The Blackbird laughed out loud enough more and kept hitting her fragile body with the wind.

"Greed can possess your body and make you do cruel things. Spirits, like me, keep you greedy spirits in tact. Now, leave this world for good and don't ever come back!", the Blackbird roared out in anger.

With those words spoken, the white spirit took one last stance. She went to throw a punch at her but failed miserably. Falling into a lifeless heap, her body turned into mist and then into nothing. Disappearing and dissolving into the quiet room.

The African woman had turned towards us and said happily, "I have lifted this awful curse for you and this town. I'll be your protector and guider until death claims you both. Now, we all shall have a big feast with the whole village. This is time, to celebrate and have fun!"

Everyone had gathered around the town to eat and dance. The blizzard had come to a sudden stop but the clouds still blocked the sky a bit. The moon was still bright in the pale but dark sky. Hanging high up in the dusty clouds.

Food was sent around, satyrs played peaceful music with their wooden flutes, and the spirits of the other trees danced around the fires that were created.

The air was full of happiness and hope. Witches and wizards of all kind laughed around the tables. Knowing that they were truly free from being prisoners.

The Blackbird, we soon found out her name was Dalia, was dancing with the other spirits. Her moves showed carefree and excitement. Swaying to the melody of the music.

*A few hours later*

When the pale sun rose into the sky and the moon retired for most of the day. The children set of on their journey. Leaving the villagers alone in their new freedom.

Dalia had morphed back into a bird and followed us wherever we went. Me and brother encountered other magical animals. From humans who can morph into animals to humans who can morph into other humans. From celestial wizards to wizards who can possess one of the elements. From satyrs to goblins. Vampires, ghouls, and werewolves.

Me and brother had met most of them and now we told whoever was eager to hear our tales. Whoever believed in our adventurous tales. Of course, the Blackbird, Dalia, had followed us around. Following us from the deadly tundras to the high mountains. To the deepest seas and the elegant green forests. From the scorching deserts to the great plains.

*Back to present*

Now, my brother has already grown old and has already retired from this world a few years ago. We have explored as much as we could. Gaining new information each and every day. Now, the Blackbird sits in front my window. Watching as I retire from this magical world.

I have seen everything. Got everything I desired before I grew old. Now the Blackbird doesn't need to protect me or my elder brother anymore. She can't protect us from death it's self. Blackbird, you've always been a great friend, a protector, and a guider. I leave this world knowing you will do great things before you leave as well.

I should write more short stories like because it's actually really interesting to write them.
