When the door swings open, I'm expecting to see the hallway of my apartment complex with the stained tan carpets and peeling striped wallpaper, but instead I see nothing.

Every direction I look, all I can see is darkness. With a step forward, my hand falls away from the doorknob as I step out into the void. The electricity is working fine in my apartment. Why is it so dark in the hallway?

"Hello?" I call out, my hands reaching out in front of me so I don't run into anything. A loud slam sounds behind me and when I turn around, I'm met with the same empty darkness surrounding me, my cozy apartment nowhere in sight. No matter how hard I squint, I can't see a single thing. My other senses are picking up things that are making me more aware of my surroundings - and they aren't the surroundings of my apartment.

I smell dirt; all too well, I know the smell of earth as I used to take walks in the forest a lot for writing inspiration. The sounds are also familiar; crickets and frogs sing their songs as flaps from birds' wings swish above me. I can hear the sound of branches swaying in a gentle breeze brushing against my skin.

Where am I?
