49. The Letters
Dear Catface,
I can't believe I'm writing a letter to you, of all people, but that's an argument I'll save to have with you later.
Seeing as the blasted owls can't be any faster at delivering letters, I'm sending this by muggle post. Weasley and Potter asked me to use stamps, and I've put three, although Potter said one was enough. I don't trust muggle post services.
If my calculations are correct, you should have reached Albany by now. How did Crookshanks like the journey by ship? Did you get seasick like how Weaslette had predicted you would?
Apparently the weather there is warmer than here. Try not to go around fainting in the heat, I doubt anyone would be so thoughtful as to stop and help you.
I hope you're doing well, and that you have a decent place to live. Knowing you, you would have discovered a bookshop or a library by now. Hopefully work at the RHMC isn't a bore.
Write back when you can, and don't forget to wear gloves if you ever need it.
Yours ever,
Draco.
----
'Mione,
This is Harry, if you haven't already figured that out.
How was your ship ride? How is New York? Did you take a picture with the Statue of Liberty? If you have, send us a copy. And Ginny wants a picture of the Statue without you in it (no offence)
I found Kreacher taping a newspaper cutting of you to the inside of his door, alongside mine and Ginny's. He denied it when I asked, of course, but I saw it anyways.
Neville recently owled a book to your flat, I think he forgot that you were moving. I've sent the book along with my letter.
The Quibbler recently released an issue on Powerful Witches, and Luna asked me to send it to you, so that's along with the book as well.
We all miss you awfully already, and it's only been two days. Molly has added two spoons on the clock, one for you and the other for me. Arthur said he wished you were here to help him figure out the television. He seems to forget that I can help too.
Eat your meals on time, and don't over analyse situations like you're used to doing. If anyone bothers you, pull the 'I'm the Brightest Witch of the Age' card and they'll stop.
Love always,
Harry
----
Dear Draco,
I got your letter this evening. I got to Albany last night by bus. They don't have floo connections to the flat I've rented, and a portkey hadn't been arranged.
Crookshanks is doing fine, and he actually rather enjoyed the cruise. I didn't get seasick, sorry to disappoint you. We spotted a pod of dolphins somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic, and it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen.
Work starts tomorrow, I bet it'll be busy. I'll tell you all about it when I can. Anthony Goldstein and Nora Wigg are the two other people who had been selected from the St Mungo's exam. Nora lives across the street from me, and Anthony lives near the RHMC.
It is rather warm here, but it isn't unpleasant. I don't have to bundle up every time I go out. I don't think I'll be needing gloves anytime soon.
I did find a library, it's a few blocks away from where I live, and I've already visited it this morning. It's amazing and undoubtedly one of the best places here.
How are your parents? And how are you and how is Mr. Blak? I think I'll write to him soon. Take care of yourself, and tell Pansy and Blaise I said hello.
I miss all of you and I wish you were here.
Yours,
Hermione.
P.S. one stamp is enough for next time. Muggles get suspicious if they see more than one.
----
Miss Hermione Granger,
You are cordially invited to attend the wedding of
Pansy Parkinson and Blaise Zabini
Who will be joined in matrimony, on March the seventh, at the Parkinson Estate.
----
Pansy,
Firstly, that's for sending the invitation. I'll be there, and you can rest assured that I'll have something fancy enough to wear.
Draco wrote to me a few days back, and told me about Blaise writing you a song, and how you had stunned him just so he would shut up. Honestly, I think it was sweet of Blaise, and I hope you both have made up.
I'm looking forward to being back there, and I can't wait to have a proper cup of tea. Everyone here calls everyone by their first names, it's a little disturbing.
Hermione.
----
Granger,
You won't guess who's taken up the apprenticeship at the apothecary.
Do you remember that woman at Madame Malkin's? The one who attended to you that day you helped Blaise pick out his suit? Wax Nose?
She took up the job. Her real name is Alfina Thitchet, and she was more than a little displeased to know that she would have to work with me, just like how you had been.
I've got my Potioneer certificate, so now I can start my own practice if I want. St Mungo's wrote to me and offered me a job as assistant head of the Medicines Ward, and I told them I'll consider.
Father is getting better, much better than he had been in the past few years. Mother has started going to see her old friends again.
I heard you got Pansy and Blaise's invitation, and she said you'd written back the next day. How do you letters reach so fast? Mine take atleast two days.
I'm looking forward to seeing you again and showing you the new book I've got.
Waiting to show the book off,
Draco
----
Dear Ginny,
I heard that Roger Davies got kicked out of his team after you let his captain know of his behaviour, and I am infinitely pleased. He was a slimy git.
I sent you a picture of the Statue, I hope you like it. And thank Arthur for the cassettes he sent, they make the flat less lonely at nights.
There's this thing that happens here called game night, when my coworkers go out for drinks and pool. I've been invited several times, but the whole idea doesn't seem inviting, so I haven't gone.
Nora and me have started having lunch together, and she is rather nice. Her parents' house is in Tinsworth, near Bill and Fleur.
Nora happens to be a big fan of you, by the way, and asked me to ask you to send an autograph enclosed with your next letter.
I'm going to be back on March fifth, and will be staying until ninth. When I told Malfoy I was going by air, he asked if I was going by broom, and I had to explain all about airplanes.
See you soon,
Hermione
----
Draco,
I'm so glad you accepted the job offer at St Mungo's. I'm sure you'll do great at it.
I wonder who's going to take your place at the apothecary now? Probably someone who isn't as bloody as annoying as you are.
Yesterday, I bought Crookshanks a new catbed. And he loves it. He also seems to miss you, by the way, because he insists on sleeping on top of your scarf whenever he can.
Nora and me met up with Anthony for his birthday, he had invited us and a few other people. There was this one girl who wouldn't sit near me because I'm muggle born, and Anthony had to ask her to leave. She also said that she knew about how you and I are friends, and called you a lot of awful things. I hexed her. Thankfully Nora had some Blemish Blitzer.
I'm excited about going back. Pansy wrote to me again, and now I know that you're to be Blaise's best man.
Harry said that you hadn't objected to evening tea with him and Ginny, and that even Pansy and Blaise had joined you. It's good to know that all of you are getting along.
There's a Chinese takeout place in the alley next to where I live, and I only got to know about it today when I got back from work. I wish you were here so that we could grace the place with ourselves like we did at the ones near your place.
Yours,
Catface

Hermione, seated next to Ginny and Harry, with Ron and Elena on her other side, watched the ceremony in progress. The large white canopy stretched out over their heads, wound with hydrangeas and bunches of Baby's Breath. Pansy's train ran all the way below the slightly raised podium and cascaded down to the grassy ground. Neither Pansy nor Blaise had ever looked this happy. A little away from Blaise, Draco was standing with a small smile on his face, and his gaze flickered to Hermione ever so often.
"With the power vested in me," Kingsley said in his booming voice, "I pronounce you, as of today, a married couple. You may now-"
Pansy and Blaise leapt at each other before Kingsley could finish, and Theodore Nott yelled, yet again, "That's what I'm talking about!" The crowd clapped politely, slowly beginning to stand.
"Congratulations," Hermione said, holding her hand out to Pansy, who ignored it and hugged her instead.
"Thanks for coming," Pansy said, her voice breathy with excitement.
"Congratulations to you too, Zabini," Hermione said, and Blaise shook her hand, saying, "Careful who you call that now. We're both Zabini-"
"Oh, no. I'm still Parkinson, your last name comes after that one," Pansy said, instantly, and Blaise grinned, stooping down to kiss her again.
Ginny and the others took their turns congratulating the newly wed pair.
"Catface."
Hermione breathed out, feeling inexplicably happy. She turned and looked up at Draco's smiling face briefly, before reaching up to embrace him.
"Forgot all about me already?" Draco asked cockily.
"No, actually. There's a git at the hospital who looks like you," Hermione laughed, while her heart performed a series of tap-dance movements, "Does Maria still write to you?"
"Every week, and she asks about you as well," Draco said, nodding, "She's taken over the company because her father asked her to."
In the corner of the tent that had the most flowers, Pansy was being photographed with Astoria and Millicent.
"You're leaving the day after?" Draco asked abruptly, glancing down at her.
Hermione nodded, "My leave ends then."
----
Dear Harry,
Thanks a lot for the cards and the tin of cake. I loved it and it felt like I was back at home, celebrating my birthday with all of you.
I know I haven't been able to write much lately, but it's because I barely get time to sleep or even eat. I promise I'll try to write more often.
I got your wedding invitation, and does Ginny really want me to be her maid of honor? I just can't believe two of my best friends are getting married. Rest assured that I'll be there.
Also, thanks for inviting Draco as well. He wrote to me saying that ever since he moved to the Manor he hasn't gotten out much, and is always occupied at work or with his parents. Since Blaise and Pansy won't be back from their vacation for the next month, he doesn't really have anyone to meet anyways. Even Astoria and Pucey are in Paris.
Does Ginny have a dress code I should follow or something? Because then I'll have to buy something to wear.
I'm looking forward to seeing all of you again.
Love,
Hermione.
----
Dear Draco,
I liked the black scarf you sent me. I now have two articles with 'Catface' on them.
Congratulations on the promotion. I knew you'd do well at St Mungo's.
Work is exhausting, which is why it took me so long to write. I'm really sorry, I'm just a little busy with everything. This man called Arnold keeps taking days off (he's the git in my department of Medicine who looks like you) and I'm assigned all his shifts.
Ginny told me she sent you an invitation to the wedding. I'm looking forward to seeing you there. And maybe we can get takeout after the wedding is through, what do you say?
Isn't it hard to believe that everyone is getting married and growing up? I find it hard to believe.
Crookshanks is extremely eager at the prospect of seeing you again.
Yours truly,
Hermione

GINNY WEASLEY AND THE CHOSEN ONE ARE NOW THE CHOSEN ONES
On Saturday last, the Potter-Weasley wedding was held in a small and rather unimpressive manner, writes Rita Skeeter, special correspondent to the Daily Prophet.
The guests, which involved a handful of people including old school friends such as Dean Thomas, the Patils, Seamus Finnegan, Cho Chang, and Hermione Granger, and others such as Andromeda Tonks, Magnolia Forrester, Head Auror Robards, and Elena Everhard, were not available for comment. But sources report that it was a quiet ceremony conducted by the Minister for Magic, Kingsley Shacklebolt. Notable persons in attendance were Luna Lovegood, founder of the Sanctuary for Magical Creatures, Theodore Nott who is rumoured to be seeing Miss Lovegood, and Draco Malfoy, a surprise edition to the party.
Sources say that it was a close knit, intimate wedding. Harry Potter, formerly the Boy Who Lived, was seen crying on the altar, which was perhaps the only interesting event, apart from another slightly bamboozling incident involving a child.
The boy, who appeared to be no more than three or four years old, was the ring bearer for the couple. Our reliable sources report that the child bore startling likeliness to the now-wed couple, leading people to believe that the cause of the wedding was a scandal which the Weasley family and the Chosen One wanted to cover up.
Keep up with The Potters, continued on page six.

Granger,
You haven't written in the longest time. It's been three months since I had your last letter.
Are you unwell? Or did your hair grow its own consciousness and strangle you while you were sleeping?
But, jokes aside, we are all rather worried. Not me of course, I'm just worried about Crookshanks, but I will admit that I had hoped you might come along for Christmas.
Write soon, because I am not going to go to Potter again willingly to ask about this.
Yours,
Draco
----
Granger,
You haven't answered seven of my last letters. And Potter and Weaslette tell me that they haven't been getting answers either. Mr. and Mrs. Weasley are worried about you.
Weasley and Everhard are leaving for Scotland. He said he'd written to you, but that he wasn't sure you'd gotten the letter, so I'm telling you about it too.
Mr. Blak has retired. He handed the apothecary over to his nephew, who is a git in all respects, even more so than myself.
Pansy and Blaise are expecting a child. She asked me to ask you if you could spare a day or two this December.
Why won't you write back? We all wish to hear from you.
Draco.
----
Granger,
Pansy was upset you couldn't visit on Christmas. They've had a son, his name is Atlas Alane Parkinson Zabini. They've named me godfather, and Astoria godmother.
Ginny said she won't write to you when I asked her to. She's mad at you for not writing for so long.
What's happened? Why won't you say anything?
Draco.
