“Mhmm.”

“Yes, Becka.”

“I know, I'm sorry I didn't call immediately, I got busy.”

“Yeah, yeah, I will.”

“Love you too, Becks.”

I put my phone down and sighed. I forgot to call Rebecca yesterday, and so she immediately went into ‘mom mode’ this morning, making sure I was ok and giving me a stern talking to.

I get up and stretch, quickly changing into some swimming shorts. Yes, its only technically my first day in Forks, and yes, I am going to spend it surfing. There is no way I am slacking off and letting Sol win our bet.

I forgo some shoes as I walk into the kitchen where I see dad reading the newspaper, “Morning, dad.”

He looks up from his mug of coffee, “Morning Rome, HOw was yesterday.”

I shrug as I take out some milk from the fridge, already knowing where everything is even though I’d been gone fore years, “Pretty good, Sam said he’s gonna help teach me some Alpha stuff, if one day I ever decide I want to take over. Tattoo is pretty cool though.”

He nods, “Thats good, and what about Jacob, how was he?”

I sigh, pouring some cereal in a bowl and adding some milk, “As expected, he ignored me most of the night. Barely even looked at me.”

He set his coffee down on the table and rolled himself over to me, “He’ll come around, he always does. What’re you going to do today?”

I swallowed my bite before speaking, “Gonna go surf down at the beach.”

“Mmm, would you mind taking someone with you?”

I set my now empty bowl in the sink, “Depends on who it is.”

“You remember Bella, the chief's daughter?”

“Bella Swan? She’s back in Forks?” I smile, we used to hang out a lot when we were younger, I always thought of her as another big sister.

“Yeah, has been for a while. She was with one of the Cullen boys.”

“Cullen? She was with a vampire, did she know?”

He nodded, “Yeah she knew, but they left a few months ago and it hit her hard. She's been real down, and Jake was the one to cheer her up, but as you know, right now he cant exactly go and see her.”

I nod, “But, you want me to take her to the beach? I'm pretty knew to this thing too, y’know?”

Dad looked me in the eye, “You and I both know that you’re more capable of controlling yourself. You’ve always had better control, Ro. Plus, you get to reconnect with an old friend. And Charlie has been asking for you as well.”

I shrug, “Ok, why not? Itll be good to see her and Charlie again. Can I take the truck?”

He nods, “Ok, ill see you later, Dad!”

I quickly run to my room and throw a shirt on before grabbing my board, I pause at the door to slip some sandals on, and then continue out to dad's old pickup.
The tarp is off now, so I just put my board in from the side and hop in the front, I may not have my license, but that doesn't mean I don't know how to drive.

I make my way down the roads, and finally pull up to an old white house. I see a pale girl with dark hair looking through a window from upstairs before she pulls away.

I quickly get out and jog up to the door, rapping my knuckles against the wood.

A few moments later, a graying Charlie Swan greets me, “My god, Roman Black, is that you?”

“Yes sir, I believe so.” I smile as he pulls me into a hug, I remember how he used to look like a giant to me, and now barely goes past my shoulder.

“Well, come on in then!” I walk past him into the hallway and look around, really nothing has changed, except there are a few more feminine touches to the place than I remember.

I hear footsteps on the stairs and I smile when I see Bella coming down them, “Oh my god. Roman is that you?!”

She quickly hurries down the rest of the stairs, almost falling and pulls me into a hug, “God, why are both you and Jacob so tall now?”

I laugh, “Its good to see you, Bells, its been a while.”

“It really has, hasn't it? I remember when I first saw Jake after I moved back I wanted to know where you were, and they said you moved with your sister to Hawaii?”

I sigh, “Yeah, you know, after everything that happened, I had to get away for a bit.”

She nodded and pointed towards the kitchen, “Did you- Do you want something to eat or drink?”

I shook my head, “No, actually,” I looked at Charlie, “I was wanting to go down to the beach today and thought it’d be a good way to catch up.”

He smiled, “Yeah thats a great Idea, right Bells?”

She looked hesitant until she saw how excited her dad was, “Uh, yeah, I guess so. Um-let me just get my boots and stuff.”

I watched her hurry up the stairs and a few minutes later come back down with some brown water-proof boots and a big green jacket.

I waved goodbye at Charlie as we pulled out of the driveway and headed back to LaPush.

I glanced at Bella, “I uh- I heard what happened. With the Cullen’s. I'm sorry.”

She scoffed, “Yeah, well I guess everyone is.” She glanced at me, “Sorry, Rome. Its just- Its like there's this hole in my chest, and it hurts so much.” I could hear the tears in her voice.

“I know, Bella, I know. It really hurts when someone you love leaves unexpectedly,” I took a deep breath and tightened my grip on the steering wheel, “When my mom died, it was really sudden. One minute she was there, the next she was gone. It didn't feel real for the longest time. And then Rebecca and Rachel got older and were gonna leave, and I couldn't just  stay here without them.”

I scoffed, “I mean, sure I had Jacob, but you know he’s not the best with that kind of stuff, so I told Rebecca to let me go with her. It took me a long time to get over it. Its still definitely there, but its just not as bad anymore, you get used to it.”

I could hear her sigh, “How is Jacob? I mean he just ran off yesterday after he said he felt weird and I haven't heard from him since.”

“Yeah, he’s got mono, I didn't want to chance getting it, so I'm trying to stay out off the house as much as I can. I’ll probably hang out with Sam and the others later.”

She gave me a weird look, “Sam? You hang out with Sam? Jake says he's bad news.”

I roll my eyes, “Of course he does, Sams not a bad guy, just a little rough around the edges. Now come on, we’re here.”

I parked in the small lot above the beach and got out, taking my shirt off and throwing it in the back before grabbing my board, “You’re gonna surf? In this weather?”

I looked out at the water and shrugged, “I’ve seen worse. I won't take long, I just want to make sure I don't get rusty.” She nods and walks with me down the beach, sitting far enough away while I keep going until i'm deep enough to start paddling.

I go as far out as I dare, and wait for a moment, watching the water.
I have a weird feeling in the back of my head, like I am being watched, but when I look at Bella, she's drawing in the sand.

A moment later, I feel something grab my foot, and pull me under.
For a second, all I see are bubbles, but when they finally clear, I'm face-to-face with a pale, red-haired woman with deep red eyes.
