Chapter one

THE story started on a normal and easy Saturday-afternoon in the tavern of Kainda and her father Juan. After the whole Smaug-destroying-Erebor-situation , Laketown became a dark and lonely void. Only the locals were there, no more tourists from the Shire, Mirkwood or other places in Middle Earth.

The brunette stood behind the counter, cleaning it with a wet rag, humming a song in herself. Even though the girl was deaf, she had managed to remember some songs from her childhood from the time before she was officially deaf. No one knew why Kainda became deaf though, everything was such a mystery to the residents of Laketown.

Some people had pointed out it was a dangerous disease, others believed the girl was cursed and got involved with the dark side and sided with the Dragon. Unfortunately no one knew the truth. While Kainda searched for some herbs to cure her best friend, she got ambushed by orcs, whom had damaged her body in such a serious state that a part of her brain fell out. This part happened to be her hearing. Still she didn't regret one bit of it. She saved someones life nonetheless. That made her a hero amongst men and women.

A small sigh escaped Kainda's mouth as she finally managed to look up, her pale blue eyes scanning the room. There were a lot of people staring at her. The usual business, she had decided for herself. But one thing was different. There was a man in the room which had a certain kind of sad flair over him. Someone had probably have left him, or maybe he was just not in a good mood, she guessed.

Anyway, the deaf girl wanted to cheer the man up. And she knew exactly how she was going to do that. With some together scrabbled confidence, she filled a cup with some hot beverage her father Juan called cocoa. Then she walked over to him and set the cup down onto the table, showing him a small smile. The man was telling her something or so she could see by the movements of his lips, which were chapped and almost blue from the cold air. His mouth formed the words; Thank you. The girl nodded to him with a sympathic smile, leaving the man utterly confused and with the question; why did she not say anything?

When the dark haired man with the sad attitude, called Bard finished his drink, he stood up and got something out of his pocket. Since he did not have any money for her he decided to pay her by gifting her with a black rose he found somewhere, continuing with the gifts until he had paid his drink off.

And at the end of the day, Juan found the roses and brought them to his daughter. There he discovered a single tag on the rose;

Thank you for making my day okay. Kindness from a stranger is a hard, selfless, but a beautiful gesture.
- Bard

Surprised, he brought the rose to his daughter, who had the message as well. A bright smile appeared on her face while doing so. This was a good start of her night.
