Director's Cut-Epilogue

Director’s Cut-Epilogue

“But it’s just a story right?” The young boy tugged at Fiona’s skirt as she sat on the chair in the middle of the tracks.

“Yeah missy Fiona, that was a story wasn’t it?”’

Fiona didn’t answer, instead staring down the subway and watching the people travelling between the newly constructed rooms built into the walls. It took her some time to come up with something to say, and while she did the two boys sitting at her feet watched her intently, never wanting to look away in case she suddenly burst into flames. “It is...not a story. It is a part of our history. It is our history. It is everything that went into why you two are here right now.”

“But what happened to the guy?”

“Did he die?”

“Which guy? Lots of people died in our history boys, you’ll have to be more specific.”

“The one who got inside.”

“Yeah the one who teleported places and stuff. I want a teleporter now! I wish I had one.” The two boys’ chatter devolved into bickering over having teleporters and guns to shoot the zombies with. Fiona watched them, her face blank as it always was, never truly loving on the surface, but always loving within. She started to watch the other people again, seeing Burke come back from the Villa with multiple other businessmen, discussing trades and options and the cultivation of the farms. And Giacomo flew past her with a pile of junk in his arms bought from the Black Market. And she saw Roy drifting amongst them, smiling at everyone but never touching them, instead passing through to give his smile to the next person.

“He lived.”

“What?” Both the children said it in unison as they stopped their bickering for a moment to stare at Fiona. “Who lived?”

“Thomas. He lived. He was crippled but he lived.”

“Why crippled?? What happened?”

“His head was crippled boys, and his heart. When he saw Roy die he was shattered. The three of us, we were a family to him, to replace the one he lost, and he couldn’t imagine any of us dying. We were heroes, we were invincible to him. When Roy died Thomas was...done. He couldn’t take it anymore and his hope was broken.”

“But...but-”

“-where did he go?” The two boys had begun to work in unison, speaking by finishing each other’s sentences or both saying things at the same time.

“I don’t know where he went. With Roy’s death he just...left. But while his body may have left us, his spirit remains, as does his legacy. Don’t you two ever forget what he did for us, and don’t ever forget why Roy died for this place to be how it is today.”

“ No miss Fiona, we won’t!” They ran off and started to circle each other, shooting with finger guns at one another, then at those who passed by, eventually grabbing onto someone and hauling them down as they started screaming “Zombie!” Fiona shook her head at their antics and lifted herself off the chair that she sat upon each and every day, where she would watch the world go by around her and would remember what made her who she was today.
