In 1972, Isaac Hayes was the first black artist to win an Oscar in a non-acting category and the first winner who wrote and recorded the award-winning  "Theme from Shaft". It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The soundtrack was also nominated for Best Original Score as well.
