The 1970s

The 1970s was when hip hop started but the most important year for hip hop was in 1979. The single "Rapper's Delight" by Sugarhill Gang came out in 1979 which made hip hop/rap popular not only in the United States but also around the world. That year, Lady B, who was the first female solo hip hop artist to record music released her song "To the Beat Y'All".  Disco also became popular in the 1970s. A well known African American disco musician was Donna Summer. The Jackson 5 was popular during this time as well. In 1970, Diana Ross had left The Supremes, released her first album that year, and in 1993 had been named the most successful female music artist in history by the Guinness Book of World Records.
