The 1950s

In the 1950s soul music started to develop. Singers like Etta James contributed to the creation of soul. Soul music was similar to gospel music but was non-religious. Soul and R&B influenced the sound of girl groups. In 1955 the single "Tutti Frutti" was released by Little Richard and can be heard ">here. It sold over a million copies. Little Richard was one of the first black musicians to be popular among both white and black people. His song "Tutti Frutti" was known to be the song that started rock and roll. James Brown also became famous during the end of this time.
