In 1959, Berry Gordy launched Tamla Records, which became Motown the following year. That year, the label had a few hits. Some of them were called, "Money" and "Shop Around" before taking off in 1961 with singles by the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, the Marvelettes and more. Gordy wanted to appeal to all of the country's youth and not just the young African Americans. Well, it worked!
