10. Cultural Appropriation
WHAT IS IT? HOW CAN IT BE STOPPED? WHAT'S YOUR OPINION. No I have some movement we do not want to solely think about culture appropriation because we believe in break in the stereotypes we no longer award and stereotypes be part of it but we also want cultures to be recognised and for black culture in its many forms to be recognised truly and solely as an independent.
But it has been shown to us that we have unfortunately not properly identified or going into the facts facts of mixing cultures. In the term make some cultures shoes in black characters guide in the hairstyles chapter.
It was announced that mixing cultures were present. So the example of 'boxer braids' was used not to identify culture appropriation but used to identify that in different groups or communities use different ways of saying things, whether it be hairstyles or food or drink or whatever.
Now I understand that there is a way of saying things but I believe that it's better to express your opinions in the comment section as a way to for us to understand what we have done wrong. Because the chapters that we have posted have been posted way before that acknowledgement on a national or social platform about cultural appropriation.
In the chapter of hairstyles I discussed about mixing cultures. It came up in a discussion that I was using mixing cultures inappropriately. However to my defence I had realised that culture appropriation is very different to mixing of cultures. For example an important example is Puerto Rico and Dominican culture they have plantain but they call it 'stonoe' (correct me on the spelling!) which is prepared differently to plantain. They fry it, crush it and then fry it again. I have used this as an example because in hairstyling it's the same.
Hairstyles in different cultures have different names, this may be due to the language of that person or the culture. However the style may look the same.
However culture appropriation is very complex and different to the example I gave in the Hairstyle's chapter.
What is cultural appropriation?
'Boxer braids' has been discussed as cultural appropriation by some because they believe it's wrong to take a persons culture and display it for profit without acknowledging the culture or people as a whole. The fashion and film industry does this a lot and by doing so the culture does not gain the proper recognition that it deserves.
This happens to a lot of black 'ghetto'/hood culture and urban culture. It's annoying and some people don't see it as a problem but for marginalised groups it doesn't feel right at all to them because it's something that was obviously there's to begin with.
Items of people's culture is no longer a symbol or value of that culture but it becomes trendy and relabelled as something else. This means that the person who's created the new title has allowed them to gain popularity even though it was not there's to begin with.
I don't think people should not wear it or if you're not block you shouldn't wear it no I am stating that even if you wear that piece of culture you need to recognise it and you need to state it for what it is, you cannot glamorise it you cannot make it a piece of your own, you have to give its value and make it known and make it part of you understand in that persons culture and that your value on it and you're contributing by saying the right name or say in the right term.
Cultural appropriate happens to many poc (people of colour) cultures, this is when businesses uses cultures because they 'look good' whether it's shops, clothes, hairstylists, anyone. They take it as their own and change it for economic or just any type of gain.
For example, the fashion industry constantly takes from the black community and pushes it as their own or their own piece that they have created for example;
It's the deliberate stealing of a culture and taking it as your own. It's hurtful and mean and especially rude if you're taking it.
The first picture and another picture of the 'colourful locs' isn't a fashion piece by original piece from Rastafarian culture which comes from Ethiopia and then was practiced in Jamaica and throughout the Caribbean and the world.
The locs originated from the followers of Halie Selassie in Ethiopia, after he was held in prison/captivity the solider decided to not comb or do their hair as a sign of a revolt. Then their hair began to change and loc and this became a symbolism to the emperor.
Locs is not unhygienic and it's not a symbolism to smoking weed as it's represented. It's represents respect, love, honour and it's something that I've grown around.
This ain't it chief. It's so bad. This is CULTURAL APPROPRIATION!! For definite. No doubt about it.
It happens in every culture, for example the first hairstyle is Bantu knots, I don't think theses people don't understand the name or how the culture has come about. Media makes it a style or something that they've created it. The second one is a piece by indigenous people who are also known as Native American.
The third picture is Burka which is what women of Islam wear or Muslims. I only know this because I've been exposed by this culture and my friends are Muslim. Here are the different versions;
Not only that This leads to the original person who wears the original person from the culture who wears these pieces in there every day life to be deemed as not worthy. In addition they also seen as a lesser being all or less cool then another person of a different race to be wearing it. However this is why I wanted to include this in the run because it is deep it is unrecognisable, it is so subtle that it's hard to see and therefore people don't think it's a problem.
Not only does it damage the self-esteem of the person of that culture but it also encourages the belief that a certain look on a different person of that different culture/non-black/non-poc looks much better on them than the person of the original culture.
It is also a removal of that persons culture is creativity and it's changed into something that is so high that is worthy of pricing and painful and it allows only a certain person to receive it or the person that may have a different texture of hair may not be able to receive it or it may not look better on them.
