Chapter 4: Results and Relief
The rest of the tests were largely uneventful, save for the softball throw. There was no hope of anyone beating the girl with a round face, who Yamiyo learned was named Uraraka, who literally got a score of infinity. Her Quirk obviously had something to do with gravity, though the neko wasn't completely sure what it was or how it worked, nor could he focus enough to really think about it with his new friend standing at his side and talking animatedly with a boy with a lightning bolt in his hair. When it was his turn, he nearly dropped the ball in his hand when a loud voice cheered him on. "Hey, you got this, Yamiyo, my man!"
Yamiyo chuckled to himself and got into position, taking a deep breath as his eyes closed and he centered himself. Less than a second later, his eyes flew open, his expression set and determined as he threw the ball as hard as he could, despite knowing his result wouldn't be anything super great. Turning, he walked back to his excitable friend who held his hand up for a high five. "Hey, no fair, you're taller than me!" He exclaimed before hopping to slap their hands together all the same. "104.7 meters isn't so bad, huh?" He asked as he searched his friend's expression.
"Yeah, man! You set the bar for me 'n' Denki here!" He jabbed his thumb in the direction of the lightning boy he'd been talking to.
"Hey! I'm Kaminari Denki." He stuck his hand out for the neko to shake, which he did, causing his fur to stand on end due to residual static from the electric boy, much to the amusement of the other two boys.
"My name is Llew Yamiyo, but you can call me Yamiyo. And stop laughing at me, Eijirou!" Letting go of his new acquaintance's hand, he shoved his friend gently as he pouted, his brows furrowed, his lips pursed and his flushed cheeks puffed out. "It's not my fault my fur's super prone to static!"
"Chill out man! I thought it was kinda cute in a manly sorta way!" Kirishima replied, ruffling the neko's hair, only to be startled by the soft rumbling sound from the short boy. "Bro, are you purring?!"
Yamiyo's ears immediately went back as he blushed brightly and stepped back. "Y-yeah.... It's.... I c-can't help it. If I'm really happy, I purr...." He mumbled shyly, staring at the ground, only to jump when Bakugo started yelling again, everyone's eyes going to him as he threateningly advanced on a terrified Deku, who was holding his wrist. 'When did his finger get so hurt? The heck?' The neko wondered. Suddenly, white fabric wrapped around Bakugo, restraining him. It was Aizawa Sensei's scarf. "Hey, why didn't he restrain Bakugo when he was being mean to me?!" The neko exclaimed.
"Because I had it under control." A soft voice sounded from behind the feline, and he didn't even have to turn to know who it was.
He did anyway and smiled rather shyly up at the heterochromatic boy. "Y-yeah. Thanks for that ag-gain, Todoroki. Thanks to y-you, I was able to observe him and dodge the most recent time...." He stammered, feeling ashamed of his stammer. 'Why can't I just talk normally?! What's wrong with me all of a sudden?' He wondered, his cheeks still flushed.
"Are you sure you are all right? Your face is quite red. Are you ill?" Todoroki asked, tilting his head slightly.
"N-no! I'm fine. I just.... Eijirou and Denki found out I purr when happy and I'm a little embarrassed...." He mumbled, since that was a less embarrassing explanation than telling the teen in front of him that he thought he was sexy.
"Oh? What does a purr sound like? I haven't heard a cat purr before." Todoroki asked curiously.
'So pure! But it's sad that he's never heard a cat purr before.... He's been hurt and sheltered in all the wrong ways.' Yamiyo thought to himself. "U-um.... I can't exactly purr on demand, b-but you'll hear it if you're around me when I'm really happy. It's...kind of a soft rumbling sound, though."
"Bro, just do this if you wanna make him purr!" Kirishima exclaimed as he reached out to ruffle the feline's hair.
"No, wait!" Yamiyo exclaimed, but it was too late, and his body visibly relaxed, his eyes closing as the boy's surprisingly soft hand played with his hair, a quiet purr reverberating from him, stopping when the hand retreated.
"Oh. So like this?" Todoroki asked as he reached out and nervously stroked the uneven black hair atop the neko's head.
"Ahhhh...." Yamiyo let out a contented sigh as he purred even louder, drawing the attention of other students by now. The rest of the tests went much like this, with just about everyone, except for laser boy, Iida, Deku, Bakugo, and Aizawa Sensei (though the latter looked like he kinda wanted to), petting him between his turns. He was only left alone when everyone was gathered for the results. The poor neko had to adjust his stance because the touches to his ears and the base of his tail caused a very uncomfortable problem in his gym shorts, and he didn't want anyone to notice, which was also why he hadn't told anyone to stop. They were happy, and who was he to make them upset? Very few of the people who were petting him noticed his twitches and faltering in his purrs when those sensitive areas were touched, and they both stopped touching him altogether, Todoroki looking confusedly at his hands as he walked away, and Kirishima laughing and chatting with Denki (and trying to do the same with Bakugo) while keeping an eye on the cat boy. Smiling a bit to himself at their thoughtfulness, he looked up at the hologram board with their results. To his relief, he was number fifteen of twenty. But Deku got last, poor kid.
"No one's getting expelled. It was a rational deception to make you do your best." Aizawa Sensei announced before walking off.
A tall girl with big breasts and her hair back in a poofy ponytail looked at the rest of the class rather haughtily. "Of course he wasn't going to expel anyone. If you had thought about it, you would have figured it out yourselves."
Yamiyo frowned. She was wrong. "Excuse me, but first of all, you have no right to talk to us like that, and, secondly, if you had done any research, you would have known that Aizawa Sensei expelled an entire first year class last year. He has no tolerance for people with no potential. I believe that he fully intended to expel the person in last place, and he also anticipated that person to be Deku. Which means that his mind was changed and he sees potential where he didn't before."
Yamiyo didn't see the look of shock and embarrassment from the freckled boy turn to one of sparkly eyed admiration and awe.
